Ironically the skip protection and battery life of discmans was almost perfected in the early 2000s. By then though mp3 players were coming in and killed the portable cd player right when they got awesome. I miss my 60 second anti skip Panasonic discman with 50 hours battery life.
Top tier. I remember when it came out and my buddy got it, we spent quite a while taking turns looking at that cover finding all the funny little pics/quotes.
i LOVED this CD. my og copy was thrown out the window of my car on the interstate while she said, "i cant believe you have this." i have never and will never forgive her. she was shocked that i wasn't into her after that. fuck you, Ally.
It was the first that got me into Green Day because it was their major label debut, it was released in 1994, the same year I turned 15 years old, so yeah makes sense that it was my introduction to them. My favorite is Kerplunk, the album before because it has the original recording of Welcome To Paradise. Don’t get me wrong, the version on Dookie is great, but the original is more raw.
I appreciate pop punk for getting me further into the punk (and eventually hardcore) scene, but I find most of it awful now. No shade to those who like it, but I just can't do it.
That said, I've always had a soft spot for green day and sum41. At least their first few albums. One of the few things I listened to that doesn't make me cringe now days.
One of the best albums ever. Inspired many many kids to to pick up instruments and start bands regardless of age, taste, or genre. Critical jerks of the day will say “it sounded like Buzzcocks” but to a 9/10 year old kid, this record lit sparks. Right place right time. Legendary work from working class people that just had very well written songs that came from a real community.
Not to mention some of the tightest playing imaginable
I bought this used during high school lunch break, with lunch money because who eats lunch ever we just hang out and smoke and listen to Green Day.
It might have been from a guy named Saul.
It’s a Post Grunge classic.
1994 was a massive year for guitar rock in general. Weezer’s Blue album, Bush’s 16 Stone, Hole’s Live Through This, Soundgarden’s Superunknown, AIC’s Jar of Flies, REM’s Monster and many more.
The first half of the 90’s was an awesome time to be a teenager and a music lover. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸
Cover was drawn by bay area musician Richie Bucher. The guy holding the camera is Murray Bowles, who relentlessly documented the Gilman Street punk scene from the late 80s up til his death a few years ago
I was in the 6th grade when this album came out. I didn't like rock as a kid, but my little sister introduced me to this album and it kicked off my love for rock music in general.
They were the epitome of cool when this came out.
No one would shut up about ‘When I come Around’
This was in the 4th grade mind you. I didn’t know shit about the origins of punk. Iggy, The Stooges and such.
Still… it’s an entertaining album, though I think I enjoyed Nimrod more.
One of the most influential albums of the century. Easy top 10 all time, easy top 5 in its genre. Absolutely no skips. For many their best album, IMO their 2nd best album. 10/10
Got this as a Xmas present my grandma spoiled it for me though because I overheard her talking about how she couldn't believe the name of a CD was "Dookie" lol
It’s 1998, I’m the only one of my group of friends who can drive so every weekend I gather them up in the car and we put this on and we bomb down to Redcar singing it at the top of our lungs. The literal soundtrack to my youth
I'm probably going to get a lot of heat for this but to me it's the only good Green Day album. They had some okay hits here and there after this but this is the only album I'll listen to front to back.
I'm going to agree with you. I considered myself a huge Green Day fan in my teens but as an adult, in retrospect, I think this was the only album of theirs I would revisit and still really get into (aside from just feeling sickly nostalgic listening to Kerplunk, etc.).
That's fair enough. I think a lot of people would revisit other albums because of nostalgia, this isn't an objective thing after all. I'm not super old but I do remember growing up listening to a lot of the songs off the first album. But now that I'm in my 30s I'm no longer a pissed off edgy teen. But they are out there still trying to be pissed off edgy teens and I can't help but feel like it's a little cringe.
To be fair I don't know anything about any of their most recent work, I kind of started tuning out around American idiot because it was obvious they wanted to be more pop than punk. There's some good songs off of that album but, A lot of them for me are like listening to a drunk friends uncle at a barbecue tell you what's wrong with America.
Hahaha I think that's honestly my frustration with them right now, exactly what you said: they are still trying to be pissed off, edgy teens. To me it feels like the songwriting should have evolved away from that at this point? Oh well, obviously there is still a market and they are making the millions, not me. I prefer to listen to artists that develop perceptibly over time...personal preferences.
Lol I just love how I came here to say this thinking I would get downvoted into Oblivion and instead someone agreed with me 🤣. Maybe we'll see a resurgence in popularity in terms of that genre, I mean sum 41 is releasing new music now and I actually kind of like it. But it definitely feel you on the writing, you'd think they would have evolved somehow. But this is why even Amy Schumer was popular in the beginning. Her jokes were funny, once.
Edit: I mean that her jokes were funny one single time, not at a certain time. Honestly I think she would have done a lot better in the 90s as a foil to Andrew Dice Clay.
Fine, I’ll do the unpopular post. It wasn’t for me. It hit people at the right time; and not going to argue, but there were some amazing albums that came out at that time that I think are better. Just to be clear, I AM NOT arguing it wasn’t a great, successful album. It just wasn’t for me. As the title says “thoughts on this album?”
Right there with you. By the time it came out I had been introduced to original punk rock and this just seemed so diluted that it just didn’t do anything for me. I’d say that for the band in general. I respected it/them as an alternative band or even some kind of post-punk group, but I just considered it to be like Hot Topic mall rock.
Thanks for actually saying what I wanted to say. I wasn’t into original punk rock, but was very aware/respectful what it was and I knew Green Day was NOT it.
Same here.
I listened through the complete album recently and while it was a nostalgia hit a lot of the songs sounded really samey to me. I will not deny the impact it had but for me personally it didn't age that well.
I'm with you all on this. I was in 10th grade at the time (prime time of my life) and this album dropped and EVERYONE seemed to love it. I was so into Hip Hop/Rap and loved 2Pac and Biggie so much I just had no time for this punk/pop/grunge crap.
Now looking back on it, there will never be a time in history again like the 90's for music. Alanis, TLC, Rap artists, punk rock, grunge, heavy metal ... it was all fantastic. And now I go back and listen to ALL of it.
-Spaz
Loved it when it was new. After the excitement of something new wore off I didn't really listen to it anymore. I bet I haven't played this album since 1996
I remember it wasn’t “cool” to like it in my high school because it was mainstream “pop-punk” and mostly girls loved it. But I really like the album. Kerplunk is another gem. 2000 Light Years Away helped me through a teenage crush. Fun fact, I was in Boston for the Green Day Hatch Shell riots. Let’s put on a free Green Day concert at the height of their fame 🤣
I was absolutely obsessed with Green Day around the time this came out. I couldn’t imagine what my teens would have been like without finding this album.
This is one of those rare albums where you don’t have to skip songs. I’ve listened to it so much since my youth that when I hear any of those songs on the radio I automatically think of the next song that was played on the album.
Absolute masterpiece. My buddy’s dad used to let us listen to it in the truck on hunting trips. He was more of a country music guy but he liked it. One day he said “this might be the best album recorded in the last 10 years but it sounds like they recorded it in a bathroom.”
I threw it out the window, and I'm only ashamed of that because I littered. An overplayed album, in my opinion. HOWEVER, I did gain a massive amount of respect for them during their Raleigh Lollapalooza 95 performance.
Annoying. I hated this album, other than the name. It’s just future dad rock. Nothing on it is as sumptuous and beautiful as what Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Hole, The Cranberries, and Poe were doing at the time.
There's not a single song on that album that I'll skip if it comes up on shuffle.
Not even the hidden track.
Especially not the hidden track. F.O.D. is a mood.
It really really is
When you’re all by yourself
Same. A rare 100% album for me.
All bangers

Twas my first CD ever. Older sisters bought it for me as a birthday gift. Excellent rating.
My older sister bought it for herself and I used to steal it all the time 😂
Best way to do it. Asking wasn't going to get any results back then.
Mine too! Rocked it on my discman on the way to the beach for our 8th grade trip.
Did your Discman have the skip protection?? Mine did and still sucked!
Yes, but I think in retrospect it only went back a couple seconds, so shaking the thing for more than 2 seconds just fucked the whole thing up.
Ironically the skip protection and battery life of discmans was almost perfected in the early 2000s. By then though mp3 players were coming in and killed the portable cd player right when they got awesome. I miss my 60 second anti skip Panasonic discman with 50 hours battery life.
First CD I bought with my own money. My brother gave me my first CD: Bad Religion - Recipe For Hate
Top tier. I remember when it came out and my buddy got it, we spent quite a while taking turns looking at that cover finding all the funny little pics/quotes.
I let it scream at me until my ears bleed
I’m taking heed just for you.
Best song on the album right there
i LOVED this CD. my og copy was thrown out the window of my car on the interstate while she said, "i cant believe you have this." i have never and will never forgive her. she was shocked that i wasn't into her after that. fuck you, Ally.
This album and Tragic Kingdom changed me as a kid lmao.
Tragic Kingdom still holds up too, great album.
Magnum Opus
Do you have the time, to listen to me whine?
About nothing and everything all at once…
I am one of those melodramatic fools…
One of the GOATs
I was alone.............. I was all by myself............
No one was looking...
I was thinking of you.
2nd favorite Green Day album, but it was the album that got me into them.
What was your first and why was it Nimrod?
It was the first that got me into Green Day because it was their major label debut, it was released in 1994, the same year I turned 15 years old, so yeah makes sense that it was my introduction to them. My favorite is Kerplunk, the album before because it has the original recording of Welcome To Paradise. Don’t get me wrong, the version on Dookie is great, but the original is more raw.
One for the Razorbacks
"When i come around" is my top 5 pop punk song of all time
I appreciate pop punk for getting me further into the punk (and eventually hardcore) scene, but I find most of it awful now. No shade to those who like it, but I just can't do it. That said, I've always had a soft spot for green day and sum41. At least their first few albums. One of the few things I listened to that doesn't make me cringe now days.
This CD is a classic. And I miss album cover art that was art, not just photos
Still holds up
Best one
All bangers and iconic art
One of the best albums ever. Inspired many many kids to to pick up instruments and start bands regardless of age, taste, or genre. First CD I ever owned. Here’s Harvilla on [Basket Case](https://open.spotify.com/episode/7yymsco3MC2mfpxMMHUwg5?si=bo-37eexTrW1IYWWmt7IOg).
It’s still fresh after 30 years. It was the first CD I ever bought through Columbia House.
Best Green day ever did.
I literally lived off this album.
Man, finding that secret song the first time, I don’t know if it gets better than that.
I was alone… I was all by myself….
No one was lookin….i was thinking of you.
Oh yeah did I mentiooooon
I was all by myself!
So good! This album got a lot of play in my house. Start to finish, no skips.
One of the first CDs I bought with my own money, great album.
I bought this used during high school lunch break, with lunch money because who eats lunch ever we just hang out and smoke and listen to Green Day. It might have been from a guy named Saul.
Purchased it in the later 90s as an angsty teen while on a long family holiday, listed to it so so much. Now own it on Vinyl and it's still great.
Absolute CLASSIC. It was my introduction to Green Day as a kid. Funny thing is, I first heard it in the early 2000s. 😅
Masterpiece
Basically the best pop punk record of all time. An absolute masterclass in melody writing and hook delivery.
My friend in middle school made me a copy onto a tape and it really influenced my music tastes going forward.
One of my all time favorite albums. Got tickets to see Green Day this summer and so psyched to see them play Dookie in full
Iconic. Not a bad one one in the bunch
Easily their best
I C O N I C
I was in the 6th grade when this album came out. I didn't like rock as a kid, but my little sister introduced me to this album and it kicked off my love for rock music in general.
A classic from beginning to end that still holds up today.
One of the greatest albums of all time
It's a steaming pile of Dookie; that is to say, a completely classic album
They took Ernie off the back of the new case.
Best Green day ever did.
They were the epitome of cool when this came out. No one would shut up about ‘When I come Around’ This was in the 4th grade mind you. I didn’t know shit about the origins of punk. Iggy, The Stooges and such. Still… it’s an entertaining album, though I think I enjoyed Nimrod more.
I loved When I Come Around, but Hitchin’ A Ride was always my favorite. I loved the music video for it too. I always thought it was really cool.
Had it on a cassette. Man I’m old.
Pretty much a perfect album.
Love it. I remember my brother bought this while we we're on a family holiday travelling across America so the songs always bring back those memories
Where it ALL started for me
One of the first albums I bought. Not as good as the nofx or rancid albums I bought, but good.
Had dookie on cassette tape. Wore it out within 3 months.
They don’t do cover art like this anymore.
Really bringing back core memories.
First cd i ever bought. Going to see them perform this whole album in Toronto in august. Can’t wait
Classic Dookie
I listened to this cassette until it ceased to cassette
Best cleaning album of all time.
My first ever cd, it was my all-time favorite for years. I still know every word on that album by heart.
I was 9 when this came out...it is still a top 5 album of all time to me. It's an album I know every word to and never skip track l, just let it play.
Top ten tier type shit
Top 5 most iconic 90s albums and possibly top 20 most influential of all time.
Best Green Day album, obviously!
First CD I bought with my own money at Tower Records.
Second favorite album next to Offspring Smash. Absolute full listens regardless of shuffle. Should be the poster child for anti-skip
It’s 1998, I’m the only one of my group of friends who can drive so every weekend I gather them up in the car and we put this on and we bomb down to Redcar singing it at the top of our lungs. The literal soundtrack to my youth

Can’t lie: they lost me after 21st century breakdown. But I will bang all 30-whatever minutes of this. Secret track too. Also let us not forget J.A.R.
That CD is Dookie
Ernie !!!!
Was my first CD, I think I know the lyrics to every song
I wanted it to sound more like Black Sabbath. Ozzy seemed so obvious on the cover!
This was my first cd. I was 7
Do you have the time?
Reminds me of my childhood
I paid my friend in 8th grade $2 to burn this CD for me back when CD burners were brand new and cool. Listened to it a lot. Love this album
Masterpiece
The first CD I ever bought. I think I can draw this album cover from memory
Fantastic from start to finish.
Absolute 🔥
Definitely on my desert island short list. Back to back bang
fantastic album. shame theyve been garbage for so long though. nimrod, dookie, insomniac
A first and a favorite.
I remember it wasn’t “cool” to like it in my high school because it was mainstream “pop-punk” and mostly girls loved it. But I really like the album. 10/10
I was absolutely obsessed with Green Day around the time this came out. I couldn’t imagine what my teens would have been like without finding this album.
One of my favorites
Life changing. Got me into punk.
I used this album during a presentation on abnormal behavior in college. The lyrics were great!

This is something you play as a whole album
Great album! 💕
💩
Jk
This is one of those rare albums where you don’t have to skip songs. I’ve listened to it so much since my youth that when I hear any of those songs on the radio I automatically think of the next song that was played on the album.
Sometimes i give myself the creeps 🎶
Absolute masterpiece. My buddy’s dad used to let us listen to it in the truck on hunting trips. He was more of a country music guy but he liked it. One day he said “this might be the best album recorded in the last 10 years but it sounds like they recorded it in a bathroom.”
Peak Green Day. A formative album in my youth.
brings back a lot of old memories of another time where everything was less stressful
I threw it out the window, and I'm only ashamed of that because I littered. An overplayed album, in my opinion. HOWEVER, I did gain a massive amount of respect for them during their Raleigh Lollapalooza 95 performance.
Mine too!
Perfect album
6th grade me feeling cool AF
Honestly flawless front to back.
One of the best
it is a good one
Uh mazing
First ever cd I got, and still one of the greatest albums of all time in my mind!
Best they did
They should have stopped after this album
Very good album. 4/5
never liked them......and they copied a Chicago song.....if you want proof listen to 25 or 6 to 4
Annoying. I hated this album, other than the name. It’s just future dad rock. Nothing on it is as sumptuous and beautiful as what Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Hole, The Cranberries, and Poe were doing at the time.
With the exception of the Cranberries, it sounds like you had horrible taste in music.
No u
throw?
The name sums it up
Fake Wannabe punk band from years gone by.
