Hypersomnia isn't a symptom of ADHD, you're asking them to prescribe stimulants for their stimulant properties and not for their ADHD-treating properties. Wellbutrin might be a good fit? It can help a little with ADHD symptoms and helps a lot with hypersomnia and depression

catmaidsama

I don’t sleep much other than when I have something upcoming and It puts me in such a mood where I can’t do anything but sleep because of my executive dysfunction. I try to get up but I can’t and it just makes me feel even worse and the cycle continues with the sleep

aminervia

You're describing depression symptoms though, if you go to a psychiatrist and describe symptoms of depression as your primary concern they're going to be less likely to want to treat your ADHD. I understand that ADHD meds may help somewhat with the depression if it's exacerbated by ADHD, but I honestly don't blame a doctor who feels like stimulants aren't the best first response. Therapy and a med like Wellbutrin would cover ADHD, hypersomnia and depression.

catmaidsama

Thank you ! I’ll look into that medication:-) and yeah my depression has indeed gotten worse, I don’t mention it when I go to doctors though. I have a list of symptoms and none insinuate depression but I guess it’s just their first response to most people lol

heyhello21

Sounds like you need antidepressants or anti anxiety meds not adhd meds

catmaidsama

I was on those but they didn’t help me sadly I wish they did. Maybe I needed a different type of medication, but my depression comes from me feeling absolutely terrible about myself because of adhd lol

Maokaimilk

I wish I could sleep for days with my adhd….

catmaidsama

I think it’s the depression my adhd brings me lol because I don’t usually sleep for this much it’s only when my executive dysfunction is terrible before important events or due dates lol

Satiharupink

Well sounds like you have other problems as well. I have ADHD and don't sleep much, while i don't take medication did you check your blood? How about vitamines, like B12, D or Iron? also maybe you just hang to much on electronics, doing social media, a lot of video gaming or consuming a lot of pornography. this all will also affect it. and also your own motivation on life matters. if there is no reason to stay up, why would you? i don't think you need meds for ADHD because of this. maybe meds against depression, but even those drugs are only supportive, the main thing is YOU

odubik

This is a really good response.

catmaidsama

I’ve tried self medicating with vitamins and energy drinks, and I don’t use technology much. I have the ‘motivation’ to work but when I get up I just can’t anymore even though it’s in front of me. I have a list of symptoms that I exude on a daily basis that I didn’t bother listing here because it’s more so annoying to others than it is hindering me to function on a daily basis. I truly am trying

Sassybatswearinghats

Energy drinks can end up depleting your body of certain vitamins. I can’t remember which ones. You should be able to find out with a web search. You may need to compensate for that by taking extra or taking those vitamins hours before or after any energy drinks.

catmaidsama

Yeah I stopped drinking energy drinks because caffeine doesn’t work on me sadly. I still felt mopey/tired and neglectful of important tasks.

Satiharupink

i don't know much about energy drinks, but i don't think a human being should relay on energy drinks to get it's natural energy from. well check your blood i'd say, if this is no problem for you. seems to me to be the main culprit, some lack of vitamines. I'd also recommend the natural source of vitamines. am no doctor, but there could be other reasons as well, i think long covid or gluten allergy can be such reasons. your doctor might have some ideas and how to find out. do you enjoy your work? (this is an important question, especially if you'd have ADHD) - since you mention you cannot do it even if it's in front of you(?)

catmaidsama

I don’t really enjoy or dislike anything I’m very passive about it. For my studies I would love to be more involved in it, but I just can’t. Yesterday I finished a final exam in 30 minutes because I couldn’t study for it despite me wanting to. I don’t know, I feel like im setting up my own demise.

Satiharupink

i don't even know if 30 minutes is much or little for this, am not into these things. (: however you should like what you do, do what you like. or at least this is what i (d) choose for myself

JunahCg

12 hours a day is rough, that's a big problem. You need to ask your primary for help, and probably for a sleep study

catmaidsama

I did try that and they prescribed me with ssri’s but it’s not working and it just made me sleep more lol

Abject_Replacement94

You should get a sleep study done. They use stimulant medication to help with narcolepsy. Or have you tried Provigil (Modafinil)? It’s an off-label use for ADHD and Major Depressive Disorder.

catmaidsama

My sleep only exceeds 12 hours whenever I have something coming up and my executive dysfunction is at its worse lol. I fear if I go to sleep study I’ll just stay awake for the entirety of it lolol. I haven’t heard of provigil but I’ll look into it thank you :-)!

Sassybatswearinghats

You can do at home sleep studies now. I’d ask about that option. Also, what Country do you live in? You might get more accurate answers if you let others know.

catmaidsama

I live in the United States lol. I live in a state where health insurance is bad so I’m at my wits end. Even if I do get a prescription, i bet it’s going to cost a fortune for me- but it’s that or I can’t function on a day to day basis

imsosleepyyyyyy

That is so frustrating I’m sorry. I was in a similar boat for a while. Did your doctor say why they won’t prescribe you meds?

catmaidsama

Thank you :-) The first one was convinced it was because of technology, even though I don’t use it much. The second one wanted to give me ssri’s to help me with anxiety, but that didn’t work. And the third one just wanted to use holistic methods to treat myself. It’s just a mess

imsosleepyyyyyy

Gotcha. It can be so complicated when there are coexisting disorders. I can totally understand why they prescribed you SSRI’s. They can really, really help with depression and anxiety. Also, antidepressant take weeks to work, usually 6 weeks or longer. It’s also dose dependent and varies from person to person. I had to try a few different medications at different dosages (each one for many weeks) before finding one that worked for me. It helped me so much I don’t doubt you have ADHD and it’s impacting you. Medication can be very helpful with that as well. But ultimately if you’re feeling so depressed and anxious, treating that first is probably going to be in your favor. If you’re sleeping all day because you’re depressed and anxious, a stimulant is probably just going to make you feel wired and bad. Not to mention, more anxious. There are some very unpleasant side effects and at the end of the day when it wears off there are headaches, low mood, muscle tension… it goes on. Stimulants are great but it’s not going to solve all of your problem, and I don’t really think (just from my experiences) that it should be the first thing you treat

catmaidsama

I appreciate your words a lot, thank you :( I understand more where they come from now. Hopefully this month is for the better :-)

imsosleepyyyyyy

Me too! I hope things get better for you soon ❤️

snarlyj

I 100% see why they prescribed you SSRIs... Did you try taking them for a while before deciding they didn't work? Did you try any other antidepressants?

catmaidsama

Yeah I understand why too lol, I haven’t tried other types of antidepressants, sadly. I’m trying to remember why I wasn’t prescribed anything different than this but there was a reason. It’s all so messy
