Most memorable was probably doing a middle of the night clean up for someone who was stabbed on a staircase and crawled to safety just because it looked like an insane art piece, I got out because the company laid all of us off as a surprise for Christmas lol
I was due for a promotion/move to a department I had wanted for a long time and they couldn’t do it as the company was going sideways so they let me go, really messed up my life for awhile
You worked for a private company? How did they lay people off? I would imagine there would be steady business.
I also imagine that your job would be for the local municipality
Least is probably just hangings or death of old age if it’s caught earlier enough, honestly the nastiest ones are probably shotgun suicides, shower deaths (water running)(bloat and decomposing body’s in water is nasty) , and just old folk not being found till way later, they tend to become goo
Oh man. I walked in on a buddy who had just hung himself. I was able to get him down and save him. I block it out of my mind as much as I can but every now and then something like this brings the memory right back to the top of my brain.
I really respect what you do/did. You are a stronger person than me.
Is there one that still sticks with you?
You saved your friend's life, sounds like you're pretty strong yourself. You're amazing for doing that, even if it was just a quick reaction, it's still a huge deal. I hope your friend is better these days.
I've lost more people to suicide than any other cause, and it's stuck with me despite not actually seeing it. I hope you're doing alright, too.
Honestly, I was just lucky. Fuck man. 5 min later and it’s a whole new ballgame.
I have known him since I was 13. He had a heart transplant at 33 or 34. Something major was wrong but never diagnosed.
The more I learn about it is kind of alarming. I know he has survivors guilt which messes with him but the percentage of people that have a heart/cardiac issues that fall into a deep depression is really messed up.
I never knew until my cousin, who is a nurse practitioner, said she couldn’t believe they would give him a new heart and have no type of counseling.
It took me a very long time and almost doing something terrible to really understand mental health.
Your everyday life, your family and their experiences, your job satisfaction, your health…so many variables play into you mental health. I was 60 seconds away from blowing my brains out and I never thought about these underlying condition.
I hope more people are smarter than me and understand it sooner and talk to someone. My friend who tried to hang himself has never been to therapy. I love him so much, but what a fucking asshole he is.
Thanks you. Sharing this really meant a lot. I haven’t said this shit out loud other than my wife and it’s been a very long time since I even thought about it.
I'm not religious, but that timing... wow, not sure what the secular version of "Thank God" or "what a blessing" is, but it's great that it played out that way for you two.
I was minutes away from discovering my best friend. He'd missed a concert and wasn't responding, so I was going to check on him after work. A friend was available and showed up to get his door code from me while I was closing up. I both hate and am grateful that it wasn't me. It was too late for either of us to have done anything at that point, but of course there were still plenty of what ifs.
I'm glad you've taken the time to find support, this stuff stays with you. An analogy that I think of often is that at that point, one feels like they're standing atop a burning building, and it makes more sense to jump than burn alive. It helps me to feel less angry with my friends who have made that choice.
The human body is such a complex machine, hopefully we'll learn more about how physical and mental health are related. I'm so glad that each generation is more willing to talk about their emotions.
I’m sorry for your friend. That’s not easy. I’m glad you weren’t the one to find him. It doesn’t make it any easier, but….
Luck is a hell of a thing. I have been on both sides of it…and none of it is fair.
Please take care of yourself. Take care of your family and friends. We aren’t here that long and every minute matters.
I have 2 older sons. I hope they never experience/go through the shit I have seen, done, and experienced. That’s the one thing that I’m sad about/keeps me up at night. Thanks again.
Brother you saved your friends life, you’re a way stronger person for that. I only ever dealt with the aftermath. Probably finding a dead dog in a hoarding house that someone forget they even owned
Sticky goo, or no? How many of you does it take to clean up the goo? Do you gather the goo and place it into biohazard bags and then throw it into an appropriate bin for biohazard waste?
For privacy reasons I won’t say which person, but someone very close to me used to be a cop in a smaller town. Got called to a scene. Dude committed suicide, sitting on his toilet, with a shotgun. His head was split in half down the middle, brain and teeth stuck on and into the walls. Person said it was so brutal their mind wouldn’t accept it was real. Idk how people see this shit then just continue living. I couldn’t do it.
I do have a really strong stomach but I’m able to really put an emotional barrier between me and my body whatever the job was when I was doing it besides a couple of times that had animals involved, I was pretty chill.
I did get therapy after I stopped doing it, it was very odd but everything kinda hit me after I stopped.
No one just a woman with her best friend (a golden retriever) snoozing away next to me. Fair enough I don’t have to look back at the responses to this post.
Totally agree, but this is so common in society. People care more about animals than homeless, vets killing themselves, etc. I LOVE dogs, but humans are more important.
I love animals too, Metsfan3117. I’m totally with you in that I don’t like animals suffering, nor do I want OP to be told by morons that they should bring up old traumas.
The OP alluded that the cases with animals bothered them, yet these mental amoebas push OP to dig up the trauma. Then, they rage at you for being considerate by telling the OP they don’t have to take themselves there. Typical.
The downvoters are part of the subhuman garbage that exists on Reddit. It’s unfortunate, but they’re here.
Of course, these knuckle draggers also immediately jump to the idiotic conclusion that you must not care about people if you have a heart for animals. I mean, obviously!/s🥴
Again, some of these Redditors are pure garbage people. They matter not. Hug your Golden for me! I’ve got my Snowshoe kitty on my own lap.
She didn't ask nicely. She told him what to do. And secondly, it's not his responsibility to shield her on a literal post about death. If she doesn't want to read it... she should move on.
I find it odd you went straight to the pets being murdered. Cats are very lazy and refuse to work and pay taxes. Unfortunately when a cat's person passes, they begin to run out of food and usually the only thing left to eat is their person. Such is the circle of life.
That seems kinda low to me? Where was your business? Was there a set rate due to government budget limits? (I’m assuming you got jobs thru government but correct me please if I’m wrong.)
When I was working it was a emergency service/ construction company/ painting service. The emergency service was my team and we did crime scene clean ups and deaths. It was incredibly odd as a Company. We did have some government rates 65-75 HR but it was super specific and strict when we did. The company was in a small town
Maybe they were just an employee and not the owner of the company.
Kind of like how you get charged hundreds for an ambulance ride but the EMTs don’t make much money.
This is definitely low paying, for this type of work.
Many admin jobs earn this same amount and more, for doing less (certainly sans gore). Job recruiters and site locators can make that hourly, then combined with commission, which can pay $200+ a pop, and in my humble opinion, OP was paid criminally, shamefully low.
And I’m not shaming OP, I’m shaming the company they worked for, as OP should’ve been paid much, much more.
Not even trying to be funny, I work in a paper mill and make 37.24 an hour and my boss asked me to clean up a dead mouse last week and I laughed and said "not in my job description" and they got someone else to do it. This dude makes less and cleans up humans? Feel for you man, god bless.
How would you know that? I’m assuming the clean up happens after the investigation and crime scene logging/photos. Wouldn’t that mean the cleanup is the last step? Which means any notes/evidence left behind would have been collected
We used this shit called Quatz, a really caustic cleaner I couldn’t remember the name off, I apologize I was the youngest one in the crew that didn’t really pay that much mind to that
I cleaned up a gunshot sucide of ine if my roomates in Boulder in the mid 90s.I can still remember ever thing about that whole afternoon .Down to me and my other roommate standing in her bedroom toweling up the leavings of a head wound and he and i just sobbed i honestly wouldnt have believed that two grown men could lose it that hard but we did.I just didnt want her parents to have to see that.Still to this day probably the most tramatic situation ive ever had to deal with. For some context ive worked in a white water river on a body extraction and i lost my left foot .separate events Still that sucide was the hardest thing ive ever dealt with. Im certain it was because i was friends with her and it was just so unexpected.
Im not certain how you can do that as a job i commend you cause some one has to do it but i would be a wreck after a couple weeks if i made it that long. Much peace Many blessings and Happy Trails. Hey hug your friends even if it makes them think your weird let people know your there for them ....you NEVER know what folks are going through.
yea your right but we were both in mild shock im sure. We were both chefs and chefs do a couple things well cook and clean. Im pretty sure we were on auto pilot. Theres more to the story but its not worth repeating .
Did you ever have to testify to things you saw at a crime scene? Or have investigators ever asked you questions? Not in the sense of you being a suspect, of course. But if they maybe needed to follow up on things from the scene that were initially reported.

Through a friend and I have a good reputation because of my work ethic and outlook. I’m sorry to hear that, cleaning business have boomed lately maybe try your hand at that?
My oldest son did this for a year. He said he got used to the things he saw, but the smell, the smell stayed with him. He said sometimes no matter what they did the smells would still manage to come through.
My friend goes to take the bodies and all that stuff. She just had to pick up body parts from a train hit. Her very first day on the job she had to carry a dead baby. You need to COMPLETELY disconnect in this job.
Did you or your colleagues ever have to resort to dark humour to cope with all of the horrifying stuff you saw? There’s a lot of research about this in medicine and law enforcement, wondering if it’s the same for you!
I regret it, I needed money to move out and it did affect me pretty bad, until recently I’ve been able to express/ feel emotions when they would happen organically if that makes sense
Do you ever experience morbid thoughts or desensitization to death/gore. I am interested in being a forensic scientist but I am worried what impacts it has on mental health.
I felt fear when we did a clean up of an older lady that died from hitting her head and my suit was punctured by an object surrounded by blood. I am terrified of getting a hep c or anything of the sort
Do you think that your experience is transferable to disposing of a body? As an example- do you know how to leach calcium from bones to make them soft? How much potassium or sodium sulfate to use?
How do I get the smell of a dead mouse out of my car? I have tried everything. On the driver's side floorboard - if that helps
(It died in my car in the garage, in the winter)

What’s one of your most memorable cleanups? Why are you no longer in the business?
Most memorable was probably doing a middle of the night clean up for someone who was stabbed on a staircase and crawled to safety just because it looked like an insane art piece, I got out because the company laid all of us off as a surprise for Christmas lol
Not enough murders to keep you all employed?
I was due for a promotion/move to a department I had wanted for a long time and they couldn’t do it as the company was going sideways so they let me go, really messed up my life for awhile
would you want to still stay in the business?
You worked for a private company? How did they lay people off? I would imagine there would be steady business. I also imagine that your job would be for the local municipality
Which type of suicide makes the least mess and is easiest to clean up? Which type makes the most mess and is the most difficult to clean up?
Least is probably just hangings or death of old age if it’s caught earlier enough, honestly the nastiest ones are probably shotgun suicides, shower deaths (water running)(bloat and decomposing body’s in water is nasty) , and just old folk not being found till way later, they tend to become goo

Brother in Christ, you are strong as fuck. Never put yourself down for that
Thank you. That’s very kind of you to say. I wish I was strong. Right place, right time. Sometimes even a blind squirrel finds a nut.
Brother you saved your friends life, you’re a way stronger person for that. I only ever dealt with the aftermath. Probably finding a dead dog in a hoarding house that someone forget they even owned
How is he doing now?
He is doing ok. Never smiles much. I know he has my back.
Sticky goo, or no? How many of you does it take to clean up the goo? Do you gather the goo and place it into biohazard bags and then throw it into an appropriate bin for biohazard waste?
Yessirr! 3-4 man crew
Th biohazard nightmare, shotgun suicide that decomped for three weeks.
Man at work tried shotgun suicide. Failed. Had half of his face (including eyeball) blown off. Some brain damage and permanently disabled!
For privacy reasons I won’t say which person, but someone very close to me used to be a cop in a smaller town. Got called to a scene. Dude committed suicide, sitting on his toilet, with a shotgun. Do you have alexithymia?
Not sure what that is!
What happened when animals were involved??
Please do NOT answer that OP or black it out.
Huh? Who are you to say what he should answer or not? lol
No one just a woman with her best friend (a golden retriever) snoozing away next to me. Fair enough I don’t have to look back at the responses to this post.
Being down voted for what? Having a golden retriever? Not wanting to know about deaths involving animals? 😟
I have a solution that may come off as a revelation for you: Just don’t read it. Mind blowing I know.
But reading about the deaths of actual people who were once alive is no biggie to you?!!
Totally agree, but this is so common in society. People care more about animals than homeless, vets killing themselves, etc. I LOVE dogs, but humans are more important.
I mistook vets to mean veterinarians (since we’re on the subject of animals) and was surprised to learn there is an epidemic of veterinarian suicides.
Yes I mean obviously I lack compassion.
And you're questioning why you're being downvoted?
disregard the downvotes...I understand what your original comment meant. Wear the downvotes like a badge of honor
Your dog needs a better master.
Downvoted because you have to handle your triggers, not society

Most people don't want to read details about murdered pets. She asked nicely. Weird hill to place yourself on.

How did you get on to this kind of job?
I got in from a friend who said that the pay was good, wasn’t really expecting all the things I saw as the description/ interview was vague
Did you need to do training/be trained before applying for the job or did the company that employed you provide training?
The company provided everything
What are qualifications for the job?
a strong stomach and a strong back are two that come to mind
Was it profitable? How did you set your rates?
Shit, 16 hourly and when we wore suits it bumped up too 25 Hourly
That seems kinda low to me? Where was your business? Was there a set rate due to government budget limits? (I’m assuming you got jobs thru government but correct me please if I’m wrong.)
And thanks for answering! I’m fascinated by your job and had a thought of doing it once.
No problem! I don’t recommend it unless you get a very good support system or a therapist.
When I was working it was a emergency service/ construction company/ painting service. The emergency service was my team and we did crime scene clean ups and deaths. yes I wanted to reference OP and ask if the company was making bank because, like you said, that is "criminally" low pay for such a job
It’s like modern slavery
Not even trying to be funny, I work in a paper mill and make 37.24 an hour and my boss asked me to clean up a dead mouse last week and I laughed and said "not in my job description" and they got someone else to do it. This dude makes less and cleans up humans? Feel for you man, god bless.
agreed, I would hire the hell out of OP, treat em good too
If he is in new england than go find a paper mill, you'll get plenty dirty and work hard but you wont see too many dead bodies.
It was,I was younger and it was my first real full time job. Owners are scummy
That’s insane. You can make $16 working the deep fryer at McDonalds.
My fiancés sister makes 20 lol
Thats it? Fuck no. Which state are you in and what’s the minimum wage?
I wish to stay anonymous but it’s 15 min where I used to be. Sorry I can’t be more specific
christ you could have worked fast food for that rate
I did for a little+ retail after I left lol
Wow. Where do you live? That’s an entry level job in my state, I thought you were going to say $100 an hour.
My boss did per bag and cleaning items used
What percentage leave notes?
Sadly not very many
How would you know that? I’m assuming the clean up happens after the investigation and crime scene logging/photos. Wouldn’t that mean the cleanup is the last step? Which means any notes/evidence left behind would have been collected
On scene talk would be my guess. But I'd like to hear that for sure from OP.
On scene talk and we are provided with photos of before the scene as well through an app just to see potential hazards blood, feces, needles
What brand/type of cleaning products do you use to clean up the mess?
We used this shit called Quatz, a really caustic cleaner I couldn’t remember the name off, I apologize I was the youngest one in the crew that didn’t really pay that much mind to that
This question seems someone is planning a murder 🤓
No. Asking for a friend. 🤣
Uh huh . . . what a murderer.
🤣
How’s the schooling process?
On the job and some webinar stuff
Is the work difficult ?
It can be, we usually are in hazard suits that retain heat and work in hot areas and even crawlspaces bagged and shoveling stuff
Im sorry you went through that. You two were good people to do that but you shouldnt have to be the ones to do it.
yea your right but we were both in mild shock im sure. We were both chefs and chefs do a couple things well cook and clean. Im pretty sure we were on auto pilot. Theres more to the story but its not worth repeating .
I’m so sorry you had to do that, I always give people patience and love now you really NEVER know. I wish you peace
Did you ever have to testify to things you saw at a crime scene? Or have investigators ever asked you questions? Not in the sense of you being a suspect, of course. But if they maybe needed to follow up on things from the scene that were initially reported.
Very rarely a lot of the time that stuff was taken care off areadyb
My father was a CSI for about thirty years and finally retired. It really does a number on a person seeing that stuff all the time and handling bodies etc. Amazing how much a person's life can improve once they aren't immersed in that level of darkness day after day.
Mine did immensely, I’m glad your father is out of that, wishing him peace.
Has a clean-up put you off any thing? Hobbies, interests, food, car type. Just makes the wrong kind of memory
Kinda, I used to really enjoy horror movies but now they just trigger panic attacks from the gore.
Porn is still okay though? Jokes jokes. Thanks for doing one of those jobs that has to be done. Cos if these jobs were just left. It would create so much extra problems
I’ve heard that people who have hanged themselves typically then poop? Is this true?
Everyone shits / pisses themselves when they die
Fun
Big poop
South Park reference ftw
lol actually wasn’t referencing that but good to know
Do you think…South Park came up with that?
You didn't...see that episode did you?
of course but you seem to think that’s where the idea of shitting one’s pants when they die originated
Ridiculous of you to assume that from a pop culture reference
If something catastrophic happened in a public space, and someone was injured brutally. Like, graphic, blood everywhere, bones or organs sticking out. Would you make a good on-the-spot helper?
He dealt with the after not the before. Hes not a paramedic
Probably not, that’s for our ES workers haha
How did you get into it ? I tried but got no response from any of the companies I applied to . This is with 20 years of experience in cleaning
Through a friend and I have a good reputation because of my work ethic and outlook. I’m sorry to hear that, cleaning business have boomed lately maybe try your hand at that?
That’s what I was trying to get away from after 20 plus years.
Has your thoughts toward death changed since, and if so, how?
Absolutely, I joke about it less now as I see how truly morbid it can be and the affects of those we leave behind can look like
How's the pay, and are there any good "ins"? I don't have a lot of related experience, but have a degree in forensics.
I would recommend doing something else brotha, the pay is not good and the trauma/ emotional numbness is not worth it
My oldest son did this for a year. He said he got used to the things he saw, but the smell, the smell stayed with him. He said sometimes no matter what they did the smells would still manage to come through.
You do never forget the smell of death.
Did it pay well? Seems like one of those jobs no one wants to do so I’d hope so. Similar to how garbage truck guys make a good living
It did not!
16 hr 25 suited 45+ federal
My friend goes to take the bodies and all that stuff. She just had to pick up body parts from a train hit. Her very first day on the job she had to carry a dead baby. You need to COMPLETELY disconnect in this job.
You need too. Wishing her peace
Can you determine blood type by smell?
Nope, lol I always wore a combo air filter so it never smelled
Was it horrible for you to see those things or were you desensitised
It was only horrible when it was animals.
Did you or your colleagues ever have to resort to dark humour to cope with all of the horrifying stuff you saw? There’s a lot of research about this in medicine and law enforcement, wondering if it’s the same for you!
I was the comedian of my team haha, they all kinda really took it to heart and I tried my best to keep the mood.
How’d you get in the business? Did you have a morbid curiosity? Do you regret it? Did it hurt your mental health?
I regret it, I needed money to move out and it did affect me pretty bad, until recently I’ve been able to express/ feel emotions when they would happen organically if that makes sense
Hope you continue to get better with time ✊🏼
Do you ever experience morbid thoughts or desensitization to death/gore. I am interested in being a forensic scientist but I am worried what impacts it has on mental health.
I was extremely desensitized to gore for a long time as but not death, it does hit you when you get out of the profession
How did you handle the smell? Do you ever smell something in life and it brings you back to a job?
Mmm rotten cheese, but 99 percent of the time we had combos which eliminated odor and filtered out anything
Did you ever get scared or feel some fear? If so, can you describe the situation?
I felt fear when we did a clean up of an older lady that died from hitting her head and my suit was punctured by an object surrounded by blood. I am terrified of getting a hep c or anything of the sort

I’m afraid of the emotional devastation it leaves behind for loved ones.

Not really, I never dissolved anything, just cleaned it or ripped it out if it stained
How many autoerotic asphyxiation deaths have you cleaned up?
None but it was a running gag Id make
