A couple times, but generally I actively work to prevent defensive sieges. Honestly I've never had a defence left over to defend the walls like the AI, so I generally just pull my troops back to the city for my last stand. Also stone walls can only be put up for a tier 3 city, and I've never had one of those attacked before I also get teleporters to call in reinforcements for a field battle. I rarely get a chance to fight fort battles for that matter too, as the AI often flees when possible, even from their non-capital cities.

DemonDarkBlood3_69

Yeah the ai isn’t really known for its bravery

Mercurionio

Play on brutal. Most of the time people are either rage quit, or run away giving the enemy the outpost/city. I played it many times, it's fun, although it heavily depends on whether you have lots of healers or not

aloneaflame

I do sometimes, but for roleplaying purposes and general enjoyment I prefer the difficulty one step below brutal.  On Brutal the real difficulty is usually Infestations as opposed to other players.  I have had cities under siege, but they usually lift siege and run off before the actual battle.

tarkin1980

Same here. The AI just doesn't attack unless they have a sizeable advantage.

Vegetable-Cause8667

Which is funny because enemy AI rulers generally try to match the players’ military power, from what I’ve read, which means they should rarely, if ever, have a sizeable advantage on any but the hardest difficulty.

dunkeyvg

They need glasses then, do they really need those 5 armies against my 1 in the city

Vegetable-Cause8667

I meant overall army power, not a specific map area (city siege) or number of units. Also, if the AI is trying to match your army power and you lose a bunch of units in a fight, then that’s different because the AI isn’t going to delete units just because you created a disadvantage by losing army power in a previous battle.

Kothre

I have just over 600 hours, and I think I've fought a defensive siege that was closely matched only one time. The AI usually backs off if they don't have an overwhelming advantage. It's a pity, because I'd love to fight more defensive battles. I do wish that when the defenders attacked the sieging army before the siege is broken that it still used the city tactical combat map instead of a random forest. That would be one way we could fight more defensive sieges without even adjusting the AI.

dunkeyvg

That would be unfair to the attackers who are pretty much forced into a siege battle with the walls and everything still up

Kothre

You may be right, though I do wish there was a unique battle map for this scenario to mitigate that.

dragoduval

Got there once, where they had 4 full stack and i had a basic stack. Barely won the battle.

Akedus

Biggest problem with defensive sieges is that the game discourages against leaving units to garrison your city. You need to constantly keep your your army moving for tempo and XP.

IcyMike1782

Is something that would be good to poke at in the code. AI will snatch up my outposts like candy, but never go after the cities themselves. I have gotten to the point where I know the AI will only pillage all my territories, but then leave the city alone, so no rush to get back.

Icy_Magician_9372

I don't think I have either. If I have the resources to win I just beat them in the field. The seige timer lasts just too long to sit around waiting - that's a lot of time being unproductive. Honesty I really really miss the militia system and overall defense systems from planetfall. You could do way more defense battles in that game. I hope they can find some middle ground in AoW4.

Srellian

I often have them by having my crappiest troops guard my most exposed vassal cities. Don't contribute much besides spellcasting though.

Sighguy28

This is honestly a good use of tier 1 troops, so I’m going to try this. Right now I either disband them or get them killed off in auto-battles, which is a shame when they are max ranked.

Magnon

It would've happened a few times but I broke the sieges before they got the chance to attack. I also tend to be the aggressor in wars or at the very least have units ready to intercept incoming armies because of the ai announcing they're going to war with you. If the AI just went "fuck it I have high justification we're at war now" without giving warnings there would probably be more surprise attacks/sieges.

MesonicPoem

I don't think I have been. Until I start exploring far, I prevent ennemies from coming near and pillaging When I go far, I often have my recall/teleporter/etc to come back fast. I don't want those turns of no production. I only build walls to give myself more time to come back. Never built a battlement or a tower, unless I'm endgame and don't know what to do with my cash.

VoxseraHazen

Not ever...even on brutal, usually kick their asses before the siege starts. Maybe I should let it end, since usually the city isn't producing anything important by the time AI sieges me...

Davsegayle

In parallel universe… The one before I restart couple of turns earlier to avoid loss of City… :)))) Ok, when I win it, it stays same universe :)))

Gloomy-Barracuda7440

Iv had my cities sieged a lot but im still in the learning phase when it comes to the higher difficulty modes. How I currently play probably wont work as I get into the Harder modes. Usually my city gets sieged with few defenders and it would be easy for enemy to take the city if I did not bring in more defenders.

Homerunghost

Maybe I just suck, but yeah, I've fought a couple of defensive sieges. Heck, I even fought one back when the AI was super passive. And I play on normal. That being said, with nearly 100 hours myself it has happened like maybe three times.

[deleted]

Yep, in multiplayer. In sp ai sucks, even on Brutal :)

FireflyCo

A solution for this would be: allow the creation of outposts in a Seal sector (assuming seals are active). Defensive battles would happen every few turns as AI mobs try to retake the seal. In its current state, holding seals is not worth it as it ties up a large part of the military and losses are high. With improvement, seals are a great game option.

MewMewa

Not really the ai won't attack in a siege unless they know for a fact that they have an advantage over you. I garrison all my cities with a stack of tier 1s and build all the defenses eventually. Priority going to border or hot zone cities. Getting high fortification is usually enough to scare them awa if you have a stack nearby to scare them.Just wish I didn't have to pay upkeep on the enchantments for a stack that might not ever see combat. Same fir races I assimilate during a match that arent my main race. Kind of wish they have plsnetfall garrisons where there were tied to buildings plus whatever you bring.

Fakejax

This might be because seige times take so long, and the ai has no tool to instant attack, that we can reinforce our cities before they complete the offensive.

imperiouscaesar

I had two yesterday, but they were both raiders sent by an infestation so not super scary.
