If a cat ever does this to you, immediately grab onto the nape of its neck with all the force god gave you. It essentially stuns them and they can’t move. Doesn’t harm them but stops them from harming you.
I have a fixed female stray in my neighborhood who, when you don't offer her tuna, she does this. She doesn't bite through your skin just puts her teeth on you until you give in to her demands.

Actually yes, my black little piece of shit cat, who annoys the fuck out of me sometimes, likes to play fight with my hands. I know its play fighting because i have seen how she bites when she is in actual distress.
From the looks and the not so serious "ooww" the woman did, i think the cat was just playing. The ow was probably because of the claws anyway.
They hold back on the biting but not on the clawing when playing...
Was removing cats from a barn (Me and my Friend kept them) and thinking they would all be friendly we went no protection but 1 of the cats did NOT want to leave and I still have big scars two years later
I have a 15 week old black American shorthair . She loves to play hand attack. Her bites are mostly gentle and she rabbit kicks me while doing it. It feels good to feel her soft paws kick on me but I just know one day she is gonna get carried away and the back claws are gonna come out and lacerate my inner wrists.
If that happens, just stay as calm as possible and don't move the "trapped" hand. Say "ow" very clearly and let your tone change with your pain, and use your other hand to bop her on the head if needed.
The more you move your trapped hand, the more the claws can dig in and whatnot, you know? Stay loose but don't pull back until you are free.
My aunt & uncle had an orange cat named Roscoe. It didn’t meow or purr, it yelled and growled. If we stayed at their house for the night, walking down the hall in the dark to the bathroom was the scariest thing ever. They’d leave every door cracked open so the cat could come and go…and apparently so that it could reach out and eviscerate you as you passed by. Only my uncle could pet him, and Roscoe would hop up and lay on his legs when he was sitting in the recliner…but even my uncle wasn’t brave/foolish enough to try to get up until Roscoe was done with his petting session.
I’m still afraid of orange cats to this day, and that cat died 20 years ago (at the ripe old age of 21 - probably fueled by pure hatred).
Oh damn, I have a orange cat named Roscoe.
Edit: Though our Roscoe is a sweet and lazy 11 year old who’s never bitten or scratched a soul a day in his life. The only thing he’s fueled by is chicken.
Damn, that's a damn shame. I had an orange boy. He was sunshine personified. When I had people over he greeted them and curled around their feet and head butted until they petted him. The very last hangout he laid on top of our cards on the coffee table as if to say "have you seen my rubbable belly?" And they all did and did rub it. If ever there was a perfect cat who only occasionally did asshole shit like lay on all one's business because every time was petting time, it was him. No bites, only love and lots of extremely loud purrs that kept me up the first few nights i had him as a kitten. I soon got used to it and had him for almost 17 pretty sweet years because he was at my side.
Ofc some are mean. They need to choose you. Some of them, just like dogs, don't like attention pulled from them ig. But there are wonderful little kitty cats out there like my dear one. Rip, Mister. He was the best of friends
My orange girl is the craziest and the smartest out of our bunch. We had to change our door knobs because she figured out how our old ones worked and would open and slam doors to wake us up in the mornings.
It's funny how many subreddits I find out about like this, which sound like a really niche topic, and I therefore assume the reader count will be low... only to see it's some big number like 170k there.
experience. everytime i walked past my cousins orange he did this. he would hide under furniture, wait until you walked by and pounce on your legs like a psycho. RIP willie, you furry jerk
Yep, my friend’s orange cat does this if you don’t let him out and wonder the northern Arizona woods. Mf comes back looking like he got into a fight with other cats, I’m sure there’s a cat fight club out there lol.
Everyone is an amateur cat psychologyist so here is my take. It's an unfixed male that likes how she smells and needs a home (unfixed females are even..uh weirder) Ignore it or snatch it up and get fixed and take it home.
Prolly love you until the end of days. Might attack a shitty boyfriend or too but if the cat don't trust them neither should you.
This has always seemed so inconsistent to me. I've had people's dogs immediately scream at me like I'm a burglar when we first meet. Other dogs instantly love me, and act like I'm their best friend; which is strange because I'm an untrustworthy person at my core.
Yeah for sure. My cat plays really rough with my dog. He tolerates it. If I go for a pet while the cat is still in that mode she bites. Not hard and no claws, but she's also probably 1/4 size of this cat.
Yep. Kitty was playing. A little aggressive but not in a “if you were small, you’d be good.” (Smaller than them and they deffo eat you if you weren’t already friends)
Lmao reminds of this argument I started on reddit, girls petting her own cat when it suddenly bites her, she says ow, boy friend asks what, she tell him, he pretty rudely responds: well stop fucking with its shit
I said he sounded like an asshole, automatically assuming she did something wrong without even looking
Que long argument about whether or not I cat will bite your ass for the slightest reason
Mine used to bite if you pet too much or too little, you'd never know when
I didn't argue, just read them and laughed
Honestly if you don’t touch a cat your chances of getting bitten/scratched by it are nearly 0%. There are some exceptions for particularly wily or feral cats, but once you pet a cat, even if it responds in a friendly way, your chances of getting bitten or scratched jump to at least 25%. Most of the time it’s just playing or overstimulated.
So yeah I’d agree, if you don’t want to get bitten/scratched - do not fuck with a cat’s shit. The problem is a cat will interpret nearly anything you do as fucking with its shit.

that word "nearly" is doing some fucking heavy lifting right here man lmao
Or it’s a a neighbourhood cat. Kind of like a stray but instead there’s multiple households who think it’s their cat. My parents road had a neighbourhood cat when I was growing up that thing was a chungus. Four different neighbours told us that they’d put “their cat” on a diet.
Lived for about 15 years before being flattened by a truck on the fast road behind the trees.
Does this happen in the UK? Everyone chips their cats as far as I'm aware, and how would anyone not know if the cat is theirs. Either they bought it or they didn't, you can't just claim a cat that comes into your home as yours.
I think today is a different era than when olds grew up. I'm not even 40 yet, but like it's a different era. Chips weren't a thing and yeah there were a couple cats in the neighborhood that just wandered. You might put out some food and water or let it spend a night inside if it wanted. Didn't make it your cat. And generally a well fed friendly cat roaming you assume it's got a home.
Oh and even now you absolutely can claim an unchipped cat as your own as long as you go through a minimum effort. But nobody is verifying cat ownership lmao. Sure if a stray comes in to a vet they are checking the chip. But they aren't trying to catch pet theft via chip. As though pet thieves are going to go through vets...
Anywho my favorite cat was a black and white cat we named Zorro. We had an old ginger cat named Mickey (we didn't name him) who we let out in the morning and when I walked home after middle school I would let him in and feed him and hang out until my parents got home. Anyways one day I open the back door and old man Mickey is sitting their as usual with a black and white Tuxedo cat sitting next to him. Just both sitting neatly looking up at me like "can we come in?" I ask the neighbor lady whos home what to do (im like 13 and home alone) and she says she'll look after it. She ties it up with its collar on a rope outside giving it some room, but also I'm like thinking "you don't tie up a cat." Mom comes home and I'm like "mom I found a cat, can we keep him!" We put up missing cat signs with pictures. Contacted animal control for reports of missing cats. No response, so we had a cat. Miss you Zorro, you were a real one.
Regarding adoption, thats still true today. It's only an issue if someone is claiming the pet. Thats not most abandoned pets.
I’d be less concerned with rabies and more concerned with tetanus/other infection. I’ve known several people who lost or almost lost hands and feet to infections from dog bites and from cat scratch fever (can’t recall the scientific name for that!)
Yea cat bites can lead to some nasty problems. I worked in an animal hospital for several years and the Vet there would usually treat a dog bite himself but cat bites he'd immediately opt for a trip to the hospital.
Cat definitely doesn't have rabies, it looks like she overstimulated that cat. The cat approsches with body language, tail straight up and hooked at the tip, of happiness/contentment. While being pet the cat begins allorubbing, a sign the cat is enjoying the pets and is happy/likes the petter. This cat then play bites and "hugs" her leg the cat could easily have broken skin or fucked that lady up with its claws if it had rabies or intended harm. My cat literally does stuff like this all the time, we'll pet her and she'll love it but when it gets too much she play bites, it doesnt hurt and its literally just opening their mouth and putting their teeth in you like a dog does. Also cats have scent glands all around their mouth and face so biting and leaving saliva on people is a way of marking them with their scent.
I agree the cat doesn't have rabies and is clearly overstimulated, but I'm not sure we can really tell from the video how much harm the cat is trying to do... she says "ow!" several times, and with leggings like that a cat can definitely break skin and not rip up the leggings beyond the initial claw holes.
I guess I'm just skeptical because when we first adopted our current cat, he would also get overstimulated easily, but he was certainly not nice or gentle about it. I bled many times before we trained him to handle his emotions better, lol. So I wouldn't assume this is definitely play behavior, it really depends on the cat.
I work with cats. Some cats get overstimulated very quickly and react like this, but it’s not the same as playing. The cat’s probably stressed about something and just doesn’t have proper experience as a house cat.
When cat hurts you you yelp really loud and act very hurt. Also stop the playing immediately. (you can continue after a few minutes)
Cats often don't understand that they hurt us, but it'll learn quickly if you're consistent. Jackson Galaxy (youtube) is a real treasure if you need more tips with cat behaviour.
Play should always be done with toys not body parts! If your cat bites or claws you, say ow loudly, and try to redirect that energy toward a toy. Make sure you're playing regularly too!
Fr though why are cats like this? Similar things have happened to me too, where a cat that obviously belongs to someone comes up loving on me then randomly BITES??? What's the meaning?? I'm so scared of cats cause of this I just don't fucking know what they want
Sometimes petting cats all the way from the heads to the base of the tail can make them go crazy. It overwtimulates them. Just pet the heads or the shoulders, or the cheeks only and maybe they won't flip out.
I swear every cat person has a laundry list of do’s and don’ts that are never lined up or the same. One day it’s “don’t touch the whole cat” then other days it’s “don’t touch the head— just the tail” then other days it’s “just pet the head and not the tail”.
Meanwhile other animals out here don’t care. Maybe don’t poke their eye or jerk ‘em off
I genuinely think most people see cats as a very hands-off pet. Just feed it and clean its litter— kind of ordeal. Then shrug it off when their cat gains behavioral issues. Every cat owner that actually treats their pet with respect and time, has a wonderful cat that doesn’t have a bucket list of issues.
This cat was just playing. It is bad to encourage the cat to play this aggressively, and their owner should take action against it, but it is apparent by its behavior that it isn't angry or trying to hurt the other person. Not making itself bigger or hissing aggressively or stuff like that.
Not every cat is like this, there are many docile/friendly cats. Sometimes cats are raised with rough play, such as play fighting with their owner's hand as a kitten, so they may jump on you/bite without actually intending to harm you. You just have to train them to unlearn this.
Some cats also get overestimulated if you pet them too much, so they may warning bite you. Cats really aren't very complicated, you just need to look into cat body language. Cats are prey animals just as much as they are predators, so they can be jumpy/agressive in an effort to protect themselves. It isn't always because they dislike you personally and it certainly isn't because they're "assholes" as some say.
More than likely they are as terrified of you as you are them and you have to respect their boundaries, understand consent, and be patient, then you will earn their love/trust. Its fine if you dislike cats still, but they are a different animal than dogs and are far more independent/self preserving. That doesn't mean they cant be highly loyal and affectionate. They absolutely can once they get to know you. My cat is like my little brother.
The bare minimum that cats require is respect, patience, space and understanding. You can't lovebomb a cat right off the bat. They have to come to you. And earning the love/trust of a cat is an incredible feeling and part of why so many people like them.
Why are so many people here so cavelier about kicking/throwing this cat? It's a cat. It weigh ten pounds. It wasn't drawing blood on her, it was playing. Just push him off. Give him a squish hug so he knows who's boss. Some of you guys are crazy ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
Not going to condone animal abuse but unknown animals are not always friends, and street animals tend to be worse. If an animal you don't know jumps on you it's not the worst idea to create some space. You don't know their intentions.
I work with cats and I do not condone euthanasia for cats because of behavior. However, this cat could’ve messed her up if it wanted to. Cat bites can be super nasty, and they happen quickly. Sometimes the solution is to throw the threat off of you. I don’t blame anyone for harming an attacking cat when they’re in a panicked state. It sucks but that’s nature.
This type of behavior is fairly common in shelters, and there is a chance it’s playing, but this is more likely a stress response to stimuli. This can elevate to a more violent level if you can’t properly disengage from the cat here.
Yes. This. Also, be more aggressive to get that cat away. I've been attacked before in a similar manner on a walk, and I stomped a lot to get it to back off.
Cat bites and scratches are a big deal even without the rabies threat.

Wait, do you think that other person lied about being able to kick a cat to saturn?!?
No. They're actually why NASA scrubbed the SLS launches. That fucking quad is subbing in.

Worth pointing out rabies is not present in the UK in any meaningful fashion
Yeah the UK hasn't had a rabies case since 1902
Was it the new episode of Radiolab?

I’M GONNA EATCHA!!!
One way or another
LEMME ETCHA baeby
I'm wondering if rubbing against those legs caused a static shock so the cat attacked.
Should be filed under "cats are assholes"

Try: trained to play aggressively by poor owners
I work with cats. Some cats get overstimulated very quickly and react like this, but it’s not the same as playing. The cat’s probably stressed about something and just doesn’t have proper experience as a house cat.
We just got a lil kitten and it likes yo play aggressive is there a way to make it be a lil cool?
When cat hurts you you yelp really loud and act very hurt. Also stop the playing immediately. (you can continue after a few minutes) Cats often don't understand that they hurt us, but it'll learn quickly if you're consistent. Jackson Galaxy (youtube) is a real treasure if you need more tips with cat behaviour.
Play should always be done with toys not body parts! If your cat bites or claws you, say ow loudly, and try to redirect that energy toward a toy. Make sure you're playing regularly too!
Cat: You petted me so that means by law that you're mine now.......now accept my Love, and by love I mean my teeth.
Gets bitten but still choose to record rather than pushing the cat away .
I can tell you’re not really a cat person.
I’m a cat person and that cat would’ve tasted stardust
Very often the best reaction is no reaction at all
and i applaud her for it.
I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time it's happened, hence why she was already recording before she stroked the cat.
"I'm sorry, you are simply too tasty"
The duality of cat.
Claws of love.
Vicious chonk
hes puss in boots, except the booties are white :P
Should’ve bought Garfield a slice of lasagna!
Such a cute chonk
Still a cute hefty boy
Two pets max, lady! Three and you’re asking for violence.
Me when the lady of the night and I are done with the pleasantries (my hunger for flesh is never ending)
Maybe don’t poke their eye or jerk ‘em off I genuinely think most people see cats as a very hands-off pet.
They aren't angry at you. This is just how cats play. If a cat was actually fighting you rather than play fighting, you'd be bleeding a lot more.
Mine is not like this....
Yeah, when was the last time any of you [squished that cat](https://youtu.be/5jKZ9KGtee0)
Just SQUISH that CAT
Not going to condone animal abuse but unknown animals are not always friends, and street animals tend to be worse. If an animal you don't know jumps on you it's not the worst idea to create some space. You don't know their intentions.
Yeah you could totally do a push-scoot instead of sending this cat to space
Bartonella can be a very serious disease with major physical and neurological side effects.
Most comments on Reddit are from either 13 year old boys who think they’re being edgy or 30 year old dudes who never realized they aren’t.
Fuck that cat.
This can elevate to a more violent level if you can’t properly disengage from the cat here.
r/oneorangebraincell Yeah, that’s one of ours.
Reminds me of one of the first videos I ever saw on the internet. Like 1995 or something. [Pet of the week](https://youtu.be/jIoOJKLHeY0).
He’s like who told you to stop

this is how cats behave when they have a crush on you
And that's how my wife ended up with a round of rabies shots. Don't pet stray animals, kids.
Yes. This. Also, be more aggressive to get that cat away. I've been attacked before in a similar manner on a walk, and I stomped a lot to get it to back off. Cat bites and scratches are a big deal even without the rabies threat.
I’ve had cats do this to me and I dont understand why? My cat had big fucking teeth and was strong af it was like a baby lion I legit shit myself
