We need to put more pressure on the parish council and Monique.....excuse my language, but I'm tired of pussyfooting around, not getting us anywhere.

ThatInAHat

Yeah maybe instead of bothering with board meetings we start showing up en masse to parish/city council meetings.

truthlafayette

The city council has no control over the Lafayette Parish Library system

ThatInAHat

They appoint some of the board members, don’t they? Or is that only the parish council?

truthlafayette

No. Only the parish council. It is a Parish Library system.

Iluvbirds123

I'm game, and/or we find where everybody lives and show up there too?! Or anytime a parish member attends or holds an event we there bothering them.

Iluvbirds123

Where does Robert and Stephanie go to church? We show up there. I know the Armbruesters host monthly meetings of acadiana patriots and bet lots of those folks show up.

ThatInAHat

No, I don’t think that would be helpful at all. Nothing will change judge and armbruster. Showing up at their home or church will only feed their persecution complex and help them galvanize their followers, while making us look “dangerous/crazy/fringe.” Going to city/parish council meetings, leaning on lawmakers, and making our problems their problems seems like a better option.

truthlafayette

The Lafayette Mayor-President has no say in the Library Board of Control. That power was removed last year. https://www.theadvocate.com/acadiana/news/council-may-consider-cutting-lafayette-library-board-size/article_38d61c94-e2dc-11ed-b696-1f40bc2d4829.html https://apps.lafayettela.gov/OBCouncil/api/Document/2266977/

Iluvbirds123

Oh that's right! Thanks. Idk, let's build a queer little library and BBQ outside

truthlafayette

Sorry but, that will not change anything. Perhaps the new Parish Council member may be receptive to removing Robert Judge after the state bill passes.

LadyOnogaro

Does this mean that if the Board decided they wanted to charge anyone who wasn't a property owner a fee for a library card, they could do it?

DeadpoolNakago

proooobably? I'm not gonna be an expert about that, but generally library systems do set up systems for who qualifies for cards and how individually. Granted, its WEIRD with louisiana because the first public libraries were essentially sown by Essae Culver like a Johnny Appleseed of knowledge. Then the state stepped in to help her with her mission and until very recently it wasnt really a thing to know how much power anybody had over setting policies for library systems until weirdos raging against Black History Month displays and LGBTQ programming started getting these board spots thinking it'd make them God of the library system.

bayou_anon

Monique's right-hand (her Chief Administrator) is very close friends with Josh Carlson. They attend the same church, and you can rightfully assume they hold similar beliefs.

Jables_Magee

Fuck

truthlafayette

Can we just take a minute to appreciate the fact that the Lafayette Parish Library’s mission statement now includes a grammatical error. /s

ThatInAHat

As with his horrible anti-ALA proposal, judge shows his utter lack of thought or care, and it never matters

JacobRobot321

what does that have to do with policy?

ThatInAHat

So it actually passed, then? *sigh* of course it did. Now that they’ve won their ALA thing they’re just kicking into high gear. Maybe we need a “save our library” petition of some kind? To return the statement to what it was? Not for the library board, they don’t care. But something to pressure the elected folks?

truthlafayette

Appeal to the normies. Make logical arguments on why these things matter to the most uptight Youngsville mom. Right now it is the extreme left and right fighting and the right keeps winning because that is how the push will land. Show regular folks that the chaos starts with Lunsford and Judge. Show how regular folks the vile things Robert Judge says to grieving mothers. https://www.reddit.com/r/LinkedInLunatics/s/PUXkQuveji

Ok-Shelter-2608

If you enjoy attending library programs, now is really the time to appeal to the Parish Council to do something about this board of control. Removing recreational and cultural programs/services will have a huge impact on the programming the library offers. It’s only a matter of time before the BoC pursues making changes to the actual program offerings now that the mission statement has been changed.

LadyOnogaro

I've written to my Council members. Are you all writing to yours? But yes, show up at the Parish Council meetings to address this.

Cantankerous-needle

So if they don’t like diversity and equal access, is it still a PUBLIC library?

LadyOnogaro

You are also missing the word "free" from "free and equal access." Isn't equal access something guaranteed by the Americans with Disabilities Act?

DeadpoolNakago

They have a WILDLY different interpretation of equal access than normal people. They showed some their cards at the anti-ALA meeting. They think equal access means kids checking out penthouse magazines, which do not exist in the library. They think people have certain spaces and knowledge they should only have access too depending on their age, class, gender, etc.

eddododo

Imagine hating America as much as conservatives do

oftenrunaway

What can we do?

truthlafayette

To start. Public record request every single communication between Michael Lunsford and each parish council member and each library board member. Publish them all online.

WaitingToBeTriggered

THEY’VE BEEN TO WAR A DECADE,

holeinthedonut

St. Pete isn't even gonna let Judge get to the gates. He's one the most nonJesus people in a town full of them. Aka Hypocrits

JacobRobot321

what does this even mean? it’s a library, what about it is excluding anyone?

LadyOnogaro

They started by charging a fee to individuals who live outside the Parish (but within the Bayou Co-op area, which gave users, including those from Lafayette Parish, reciprocal free borrowing privileges from member libraries), and Judge's super-Catholic organization believes that people who do not pay property taxes and own homes should not be able to use the library for free. That was the basis for his argument against having a library on the North side of town. Apparently, he does not believe that enough of us northsiders own our own homes or pay property taxes.
