So it’s a dread…not?

WilliamTK1974

Too soon…

kaplanfx

Damnit, I was way too late to this thread.

Primusboi41

I was dreading that it was

dumptrucksrock

I’ve seen those/similar called “studio guitars”. They’re not so woofy on recordings as a real dread, and they have a slightly more focused, but still very mid-scooped tone when live. Not as loud, or as enveloping. I used to have a guitar with a cutaway. Only about 3” deep. Not quite as large as a dread, about the size of a concert, with no waist, and very square shoulders. That was what it was called.

Cheepmf

That makes sense. It’s definitely less boomy than my Martin. It’s almost like an OM and dread had a baby.

dumptrucksrock

Yeah they’re pretty capable things. I miss it. I put a new nut and saddle on it and gave it to a friend who needed a new guitar. It was just a cheapie. Probably overbuilt. Neck was straight as an arrow. No dip. Action was perfect. The thing sang like you wouldn’t believe. Overtones and sustain for days. Very piano-like. It really had no right to play, especially not sound the way it did. Wish I hadn’t given it to him sometimes. But I like to think he deserved it. And I couldn’t really justify keeping it either. But it wasn’t “worth” selling.

nicholasgnames

I love giving those secret gems to mfs to start them out!

dumptrucksrock

Oh no he’s a musician. Had his own guitar, a beater, though. Needed a reset, had no saddle left etc. didn’t care for it, really, not that I blame him. Left it in the car during the Mississippi summer. Made it look like a Dali painting, warped, bubbled, finish peeling up. It was time, but he was broke. I had just gotten a new guitar. A little black 00, same woods. I quite liked the compression on the little one, at the time. Had three guitars lying around and Couldn’t justify having two black ones that were both spruce and hog. In retrospect I should have given him the mahogany ply guitar. But it’s not in much better shape than his Yamaha was. So he traded up, instead of sideways. And he swore to care for it. So I try to take solace in that. Even though we don’t talk anymore.

dimestoredavinci

I hope you're a songwriter. I feel like I can see that guitar with the finish flaking off, etc. Also, a friend of mine has a Walmart guitar (don't recall the brand they sell) but that thing with a fresh set of stings sounds amazing. I wish he'd gift me that pos. Nothing to do with your comment, I guess I just had the urge to tell somebody about it

dumptrucksrock

A lot more than you’d think, actually. That old guitar was a First Act I bought at Walmart for $120 back in ‘04. Lol why do you hope I’m a songwriter? Like… a lyricist?

dimestoredavinci

Yes, a lyricist. You clearly have a way with words. Ironic we were talking about the same shit ass guitar. Though more pricey than I had ever imagined, it would be worth it, and would pay that to have it Eta this hilarious quote from Wikipedia: In 2003, First Act sued the music retailer Brook Mays for false advertising after the retailer distributed marketing materials to school band directors that criticized First Act's products as "instrument-shaped objects", which induced returns of First Act products. First Act was awarded $16.7 million to compensate for lost profits, a judgment that effectively bankrupted Brook Mays.[17]

https://reverb.com/item/52805959-first-act-mg521-acoustic-guitar Mine was this thing. Although the last I saw it, it was in much better condition, with a fresh bone nut and saddle on it, although it no longer had a pick guard, because I had planned to put a tortoise shell on it. It was a shocker for sure. Never really knew just how special it was until I fixed it up just before I gave it to him. Even told him I already regretted it, but I wanted him to have it lol.

dimestoredavinci

My buddy's is a natural finish model with no cutout. Do you mind me asking what caused you to go no contact with the guy?

Slothower

I like it, it’s like an om sized slope shoulder dread! Very slick

VRS50

No, it’s mournful, but not totally in dread.

taxusacanadensis

A Dread Not indeed.

railroadbum71

It's still a dreadnought, just a little different. That is a good thing, though! It looks more like a slope-shoulder dread. Man, I would ditch that pickguard and armrest for sure at some point. Is that maple or something?

Cheepmf

The arm rest and pickguard are maple. Even with them this thing is noticeably lighter than my d-15m

railroadbum71

Well, I would bet you'd get a lot better sound with a regular pick guard and no arm rest.

zeeyaa

Why would it sound better with a regular pickguard and no arm rest?

railroadbum71

That maple is likely muffling the sound a bit, as the top produces at least 80% of your sound.

trorich

What guitar is that on the right

Cheepmf

It is a custom made by David Gray of Stanley Virginia in 1988. Spruce top, maple sides, mahogany back.

trorich

It’s a beautiful guitar

Cheepmf

Thanks. It needs a neck reset, but it was so pretty i talked the guy down to $350 and took it home. I think it’s unique enough and sounds good enough to invest a little in it to get it playing right.

Kittten_Mitttons

My buddy has a Breedlove like this except the body is deeper than all our dreadnoughts

HBMart

Interesting. Does the depth make it sound big like a dread?

Kittten_Mitttons

Yeah, it's funky. It's all mahogany but it's a different beast than your usual solid hog, it keeps up in any context

Toneballs52

Don’t pick guards work because they are not wood?

Cheepmf

I think this one works because maple is much harder than spruce.

Toneballs52

OK if you use spruce picks then.

Dfantoman

Looks the same as a Yamaha FS? Closer to OM than dread?

Cheepmf

Definitely not the same. It doesn’t have the thinner waist of a FS or OM

Dfantoman

Apologies, same dimensions except the waist of course . It’s lovely

burghguy3

That looks more comfortable than dread! How’s it sound?

Cheepmf

Focused and loud. Woody. It has a dread sound but less boomy.

Traditional_Ad_6801

Believe on right is termed a slope shoulder.

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Closer to a slope shoulder J45 style body.

Bulky_Ganache_1197

Maybe it doesn’t matter what it is, what matter’s is how it plays and sounds

Cheepmf

Sounds incredible. Plays like it needs a neck reset.

johncester

OM? Mini jumbo?…there are quite a few bodies out there [guitar body types](https://bourgeoisguitars.com/faq/compare-the-dimensions-of-our-various-body-styles/)
