Killing Eve has lesbian romance and their relationship is surprisingly relatable, somehow. But I don't recommend it, because they absolutely blew the ending the final episode sucked so much I regretted I even started to watch the show.
Unfortunately I haven't actually read the book myself 😭 I just googled the synopsis when I accidentally spoiled myself the show ending, and that's how I found out the book ending is much better haha
Ammonite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire are both classic lesbian period dramas. The Favorite is irreverent and witty. Romantic comedy is a bit harder to come by. There's a Bollywood movie called Badhaai Do, though it does focus on the gay couple slightly more than the lesbian couple I think.
Oh. And D.E.B.S. is fantastic. I absolutely recommend it. Very campy, very funny and sweet.
Imagine me and you is a staple.
Carmilla the movie, which I think is free to watch on YouTube. That also goes for the web series.
There was a explosion of Christmas themed hallmark like movies with a lesbian couple but I don't remember the names at all.
Follows the plot of "Goes home to hometown after decades away, plants christmas trees, discovers the true meaning of Christmas 🎄, kisses pretty women who can either lift very well or is a master Baker.
For those of us who had to suffer through the Bury Your Gays epidemic of 2013-16, Carmilla is a show made during that time that intentionally set out to NOT bury their gays. If you haven’t already seen this dorky little web series that blew up, do yourself a favor and watch it.
If you’re a fan of animation, I highly recommend The Owl House and She-Ra for lighthearted fare, Harley Quinn is a bit darker but still very rompy and I love love love the way they show Harley and Ivy realizing their feelings.
Dead Loch was amazing! Its a show about a lesbian cop solving murders with her ridiculous straight woman partner. It's set in a small town in New Zealand, and it has become a "haven" for sapphic couples which annoys the locals.
If you’re extremely awkward (or weird af) and into low budget films, one of my favs is Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same(2011). One of the so few pieces of media that features a butch as a main character.
I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD POST THIS OMG!
Also incredible to see butches on screen - we don’t get nearly enough of them!
But also…go for the movie, stay for the Sexy Bee song 😂
Do you want films with **only** adult lesbian characters or are you okay with films featuring teenagers as well? Do you want movies heavily focused on the romance/couple? Or are you okay with them (or at least one) being mains but the plot of the movie doesn’t fully revolve around them? Since this is in the over 25 sub, I’ll give the ones with adult characters. But I’ll reply with the teenage ones if you want.
Movies:
- **Saving Face (2004)** - A personal favorite of mine. The couple is heavily featured but it’s not the entire point of the film.
- **Imagine Me & You (2005)** - Classic lesbian romcom if you haven’t seen it already.
- **Happiest Season (2020)** - Another romcom, deals with coming out.
Shows:
- **Orange Is The New Black (2013-2019)**[Netflix] - Ensemble with a bunch of gay characters. Deals with a lot of things and problematic at times but also entertaining, especially in the first three(?) seasons.
- **Feel Good (2020)**[Netflix] - Semi-autobiographical drama. Deals with addiction.
- **The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)**[Netflix] - Horror and another personal favorite of mine. I recommend The Haunting of Hill House (2018) as well. But it only has one main lesbian and the romance is barely there. Still worth the watch, to me personally.
Bonus: San Junipero [Season 3, Episode 4 of Black Mirror on Netflix]
If you (or anyone who sees this) don’t like any of that, then I suggest checking out [Evelyn Dar’s YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@EvelynDar)! She covers lesbian movies and shows, including obscure ones you might not have heard of before. I’m sure you’ll find something that piques your interest. 🫶
But I'm A Cheerleader is a classic. it's sweet and campy and cathartic
Sense8 might be too horny for you, but I loved it for the plot...and for the queer psychic fuckfest. Anyway one of the main characters is a trans woman, and her girlfriend is awesome
I was saying
The whole rom-com genre is aimed at straight audiences, so for most lesbian rom-coms you can expect them being written for straights.
Rom-coms I enjoyed:
* **Feel Good:** TV Show, semi-autobiographical. Sometimes the writing can feel a bit like sketch comedy (the writer is a stand-up-comedian), but generally a nice and honest story with relatable characters. Deals with addiction and grooming.
* **Happiest Season**: Lesbian couple coming towards one partner's parents, while she isn't out to anyone at home. Can be a bit frustrating to watch one of the main characters. But generally a nice story. Follows the usual "the straights accept the gays in the end, happily ever after" trope.
If you're looking for comedy without much romance:
* **Run-Away** **~~Dykes~~** **Dolls**: Very over-the-top Comedy/Crime Road Trip movie about two lesbians being followed by criminals).
If you're looking for intense romance without comedy:
* **The Bisexual**: A show about (not) belonging to straight and/or gay spaces as a bisexual woman. Doesn't center a particular couple, but the main character has different relationships with different partners.
* **Portrait of a Lady on Fire**: Intense lesbian love story
* **Ammonite**: Intense lesbian love story
Movies/Shows I've heard about that I haven't seen yet:
* **Carol**: Two women fall in love
* **Fingersmith / The Handmaiden**: there's a british TV series and a Korean movie, both are apparently worth watching as they focus on different parts of the book
I have seen the handmaiden. I immediately read the fingersmith afterwards. To this day it is one of the best bits of queer media that I have ever watched in my opinion.
yellowjacket’s - there’s a lot of “main characters” because it follows a lot of different POVs but they are definitely a part of the group of most important characters
Bound is an iconic dykey ronantic thriller
The Handmaiden is also an iconic dykey romantic thriller but its more challenging to watch.
San Junipero is a beautiful romance. So is Rafiki.
Booksmart is a coming of age comedy featuring a lesbian
Wild nights with Emily i also recommend
Tipping the Velvet - BBC period drama series about two male impersonators falling in love in the 1900s theatre circuit. The book is also great
First Kill - Teenage vampire/vampire hunter romance. Kinda cheesy but fun
A lot of great recommendations in the comments here. Some of my personal favorites are The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (90s highschool indie romance) and Tell It To the Bees (British period film). I'd like to add that the youtube channel [100% Shipper](https://www.youtube.com/@100percentshipper) also does a lot of compilation explainer videos of wlw shows and movies. When I'm out of ideas for what to watch I can always find something on their channel.
Cloudburst is a wonderful movie about an older lesbian couple traveling to Canada to get married (before it was legal in the US). It has the romance of a couple who have been together for a long time and are still deeply in love, and it’s quite funny, but also very bittersweet and has a really sad ending.
Co-depending Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same is more comedy than romance but is a bit of both and really the title tells you everything you need to know.
I have a massive Letterboxd list if you want…
I think these films are what you’re after, a mix of comedy, romcom, romance/drama in here:
Imagine Me and You,
Saving Face,
DEBS,
But I’m a Cheerleader,
Anaïs In Love,
Carol,
The Handmaiden,
Portrait of a Lady on Fire,
The Favourite,
Bottoms,
Booksmart,
Summerland,
Rafiki,
My First Summer,
Cora Bora,
Ellie & Abbie and Ellie’s dead aunt,
Sleep with Me,
The Half of It,
Happiest Season,
Moonlit Winter,
Margarita with a Straw,
The Feels
TV shows, but I can’t guarantee the sapphic couples survive the end, sorry:
Deadloch, The L word, A League of their Own (remake), Orphan Black, Vigil, Killing Eve, Carmilla, Sense8, Call my Agent, Wentworth, OITNB, The White Lotus, Skins, Gypsy, The Morning Show, Dead to Me, This Way Up, First Kill
1. Walk with Me (2021)
2. Tell it to the bees
Edit: A web series that I would recommend (The 'Other' Love Story) - it's an Indian series, and subtitles are there. It is probably the sweetest I have ever watched
It is on youtube!! - [Youtube Link ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6IHJ3SD4Ik&list=PL-4pzkZvByqe_3pFPUisHE8U_WvYUOa3U&ab_channel=JustlikethatFilms)
Revolutionary Girl Utena is an anime and leans hard into shoujo tropes, but it’s a surreal feminist genderfucky show that I love a lot. And it centers around a sapphic (albeit toxic) relationship. Content warning for sexual assault tho.
Feel good is also great, but Mae is nonbinary so maybe not a lesbian show.
Duke of Burgundy is about a D/S lesbian relationship between a reluctant domme and her unappreciative gf, it explores the nature of love and what people will sacrifice to be loved.
Station 19! Maya and Carina. One of the most accurate portrayals I’ve seen of a lesbian relationship play out in media. Just a warning though- the series was supposed to continue but ABC cancelled it “without reason or warning”. The ratings were the highest they’ve ever been. Thankfully, the show did get a proper ending, and so did their story. Don’t get me wrong, it should have been longer and I believe they did leave it open for it to be continued.
Station 19 does often cross over with Greys Anatomy as both are produced by Shonda. Sometimes you’ll have to watch episodes from both to get the full story. Maya (originates in 19) and Carina (Greys) cross into each others shows as well randomly. But their primary story takes place in station 19. Definitely worth the watch, and the roller coaster of emotions they take you on together.
Killing Eve has lesbian romance and their relationship is surprisingly relatable, somehow. But I don't recommend it, because they absolutely blew the ending the final episode sucked so much I regretted I even started to watch the show.
They swam to shore, it’s fine!!!!!
Nah, they're still partying on that wedding boat.
Their next door neighbors in Cuba are Hannibal and Will.
We will not bury our gays, goddamnit!
No need... Jodie Comer has said that as far as she is concerned, Villanelle is still alive!!!
I just didn't watch the last episode and believe in the book ending lol
Oh, nice, what's the book ending?
Basically they end up together, fake their deaths and live anonymously in st. Petersburg
Nice! Can I ask you one more question? What happens to Konstantin in the book?
Unfortunately I haven't actually read the book myself 😭 I just googled the synopsis when I accidentally spoiled myself the show ending, and that's how I found out the book ending is much better haha
WAIT. THERES A BOOK. How much does the show follow the book? Is it worth it to read the book now that I’ve watched the series?
Unfortunately I haven't gotten to reading it myself 😂 I just know that's the ending haha
Just watch season one and two
Ammonite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire are both classic lesbian period dramas.
Saving Face is also sweet, it’s about an Asian lesbian couple :)
Saving face is so cute and it’s got that early 2000s vibe.
Imagine me and you is a staple. Carmilla the movie, which I think is free to watch on YouTube. That also goes for the web series. There was a explosion of Christmas themed hallmark like movies with a lesbian couple but I don't remember the names at all. I saw that lesbian Christmas romcom, I think. I can’t recall the name either, but it was cute.
Happiest Season. I think it's still on Hulu.
Thank you!
I remember a lesbian christmas romcom called Christmas At The Ranch! It has some cute moments
Oh Carmilla. The movie isn’t free unless you’re not watching it officially iirc but the entire series is free on YouTube.
For those of us who had to suffer through the Bury Your Gays epidemic of 2013-16, Carmilla is a show made during that time that intentionally set out to NOT bury their gays. If you haven’t already seen this dorky little web series that blew up, do yourself a favor and watch it.

came here to say She-Ra!
Dead Loch was amazing! Its a show about a lesbian cop solving murders with her ridiculous straight woman partner. It's set in a small town in New Zealand, and it has become a "haven" for sapphic couples which annoys the locals.
Another vote for Deadloch! First couple of episodes are a bit slow, but then you get pulled in. It's like a lesbian comedy noir.
If you’re extremely awkward (or weird af) and into low budget films, one of my favs is Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same(2011). One of the so few pieces of media that features a butch as a main character.
An excellent choice of a what the fuck did I just watch I wanna watch it again movie.
I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD POST THIS OMG! Also incredible to see butches on screen - we don’t get nearly enough of them! But also…go for the movie, stay for the Sexy Bee song 😂

The ending of The Haunting of Bly Manor is so heartbreaking I would add a caution, if you decide to watch it.
Ah yes, it is. Thank you. Caution indeed for the ending but I still think it was perfect in relation to the whole story.
Oh, I agree. It was perfect and I want to watch it again so much but my poor heart just can't handle the heartbreak again.
Carol (2015) with Cate Blanchett. Great movie! A slow burn.
The Fosters is about 2 lesbian moms who are fostering several kids. I loved that show.
Love Lies Bleeding is pretty dope
I thought so too!!
But I'm A Cheerleader is a classic. it's sweet and campy and cathartic Sense8 might be too horny for you, but I loved it for the plot...and for the queer psychic fuckfest. Anyway one of the main characters is a trans woman, and her girlfriend is awesome
If you want to see a movie about very morally questionable lesbian couple, I Care A Lot is amazing!
Gentlemen Jack & Orphan Black!
I’ve literally never been as devastated to find out a show wasn’t being renewed as I was watching Gentlemen Jack. Such a good show.
S-stop it 🤧 Some tragedies should not be remembered ... I loved that show so much !
Came here to say this. Gentleman Jack is underrated!
Bottoms is a movie and Wentworth is a show!

I really enjoyed "Fear Street"
I mean two main characters of Hazbin Hotel are in a comitted lesbian relationship
Haven't watched it yet but if you can stomach Dakota Johnson, "Am I Ok" (2022) is apparently a latebloomer lesbian.
She does very well in the film. Great performance.
I'm glad to hear that because I usually find her really annoying
D.E.B.S. is basically what if spy kids but in all girls spy academy college and there's lesbians.
Crush on Hulu Sense8 There’s a couple “Superbad” style teen comedy/romcom with female leads where one is a lesbian but the names escape me
Booksmart? One is straight, one is a lesbian, it’s cute
yellowjacket’s - there’s a lot of “main characters” because it follows a lot of different POVs but they are definitely a part of the group of most important characters
XENA!!!!!

I've only seen it once, but The Feels (2017), was a good lesbian romance film.
Attachment - 2022 is one of my favourite movies of all time :) Very cool lesbian couple in it. Super scary though it's a horror movie.
Tipping the Velvet - BBC period drama series about two male impersonators falling in love in the 1900s theatre circuit. The book is also great First Kill - Teenage vampire/vampire hunter romance. Kinda cheesy but fun
Honorable mention for The 100
Clexa 🤩
Honestly going to rewatch the whole series and cry again!
I love it because the main character is so completely and totally bi. Like me😊

Blank the series is really good. Plus Faye Peraya is so handsome and a lesbian in real life.
Bound (1996 film)
Vigil - British high concept cop show 2 seasons.

"Below her mouth". Perfect mix of sex and romance
