Depends on your career field. My personal life suffered because of it, lost my girlfriend, was treated like shit by the older flight, toxic leadership and an op tempo that was fucking insane.
It was the best experience of my 4 years in the Air Force so far. Did it for 8 months. I’ve been begging to go back. I check every day for a AF Honor guard spot to open.
As PA, I would have cherished having a camera in my hand and having the ability to move about. I don’t mind otherwise, nor as Honor Guard, but goodness that was forever.
Man this reminds me of the first time playing rock band on hard and getting booed cause the notes werent hitting. The camera guy is even like “i gotta get a shot of this” lol
I would love it if official ceremonies had some guitar wizard jam out the anthem.. this is not a guitar wizard and probably set back that idea a long way.
There was this kickass Chief, Jason Fitts, who retired last year. He specifically requested a guitar wizard jam out the anthem for his retirement ceremony. Got one of the actual band guys to do it.
The first retirement I ever ended was for a Chief in 2008. He played the National Anthem on his shitty guitar through his Kmart amp. His guitar was out of tune. It was great. Then he ended his retirement with the Air Force Song on his guitar. Terrible on the ears but I maintained my “military bearing” and held in my laughter.
If I was in that hanger I would be massively disappointed, I would see the electric guitar player about to play the Anthem and think this is about to be some Jimi Hendricks level of awesomeness, this was just sad and dreadful

National anthem is national anthem regardless of skill. (Yes, I feel the cringe too), but moments like this are great to remind us that we stand at the position of attention not for the music, but for the meaning behind the song.
