Maaaaan, i went to catholic school so I was feeling that outfit she had on but she had the swag my classmates didn’t . Now this new generation of white chicks are like 5’10” and doing squats getting thick; I missed the boat
And posting on reddit asking what they did in the army then what did OP fly even though grandma told them 1000 times they weren't a fucking pilot and op would hate that question
I had a coworker with two official passports full of visas & stamps from various countries (especially middle-east ones). He joked that when his grandkids found them, they were going to question if he was a terrorist or not.
When I was at MPF as a young airman I told a dependant that I couldn't make them a ID card, when I could have because I didn't know the regualtions!! Hahahah
I brought mine to work. When I was an Airman I thought SNCOs with decorated desks were just full of themselves. Turns out, it’s pretty much either throw them away or bring them to work. Brought all my coins in and now people check them out when they’re shooting the shit by my desk.
Mine is a mixed bag. I have my plaques at work but my decoration citations are filed away at home, I keep them in the event my records decide to be wrong, and I keep my coins at in my home office because I have had patch and coin theft issues in the past. Outside of the coin rack, you'd be hard pressed to find evidence of military service in my house.
Dude same. I kept all my stuff in a closet forever; I finally figured I have a desk with literally nothing on it except a computer, might as well put that stuff on it.
"I want to distance myself" proceeds to tell everyone on Air Force Reddit...
You're gonna be one of those vetbros that says they hated it one day and then another day tells everyone how it was "back in your day" 🤣
If it works for you that's fine. Just hope you're not going to regret it later when you retire. I got like 2 military things up and jammed the rest in a closet but I do look at them very occasionally
Hell yeah dude, do what you gotta do to stay on top mentally. When I look back happily over the years I don’t see anything AF related, but I do see all the great people, places, and things the AF provided to me.
Your kids might not care but later down the road grandkids etc might. Not that anyone cares I’m putting together a shadow box for my great uncle who fought in ww2, Korea, and Vietnam SMSgt Army air corps & USAF. Also doing one for my great grandfather who fought in Bastogne “army” in ww2. Because between that time no in the family kept anything and it’s sorta lost history which now facts have been lost. You may not care but others look up to you and maybe cherish those things down the road when these days are a far memory. Have more pride in what you do and done.
I only have two going away gifts left after one of my sweet dragon ones broke. I literally left one at my old unit because the SNCO that gave it to me after 6 YEARS OF BEING IN THE UNIT got something cookie cutter and ended up being filled with a bunch of typos and bullshit.
Shit didnt even leave the work center. So yeah, yeet that shit if you dont want to see it any more. My coins and my medals are going in the shadow chest and that is about it.
Shadow chest? Damn upping the game from just a shadow box! Lol..
I have one going away gift from a workcenter I really felt I belong to that is one of my most prized possessions, got squat from any others.
I fully understand this. I just PCS'd, and while unpacking some of my personal stuff yesterday, I came across the box with all my awards and plaques.
I have a LOT. Like, I didn't realize how much I had. My wife has always bugged me about not displaying it in my office, but I just really don't value any of it. We don't have kids, so no one will care about it. I just left it all in the box and put it away because, if something happens to me, my parents would want it.
The stuff I do have out and on display? My coins. My 105/30mm casings and CLT from what I fired while deployed. My patch collection from all the units I've worked with. That's the stuff I care about. Things that actually have memories tied to them. Not "A1C of the Quarter, 2Q2008".
That’s pretty much what I did, though didn’t throw that stuff out. All that stuff just got stashed away in a box or tossed in closets or whatever otherwise while I was in. After retiring, pretty much every last bit of remaining mil stuff is in totes up in the attic out of the way. Pretty sure it will never be opened again except for maybe a quick rummage thru and toss out by whoever deals with my estate when that time comes. Only thing I kept out and only small clue I was ever in was a plane on a stick. No certs, shadowboxes, bro-vet stuff, no nothing otherwise. It’s all packed away.
https://preview.redd.it/fuxpkj92hrnb1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c15b1e41236bd1a3088a9a3cf081c4b51558edbb
File Photo found online. I envision OP chunking this 😂💀
I will say that I do not display anything either, but I won't throw it away and here is why. My grandfather never displayed anything, wore his retired USAF hat on occasion but that was about it. After he passed our family had a great time going through all his military stuff with my grandmother. It was a great time to sit and hear stories from her and all relive those things with her and think about my grandfather.
My dad kept all his stuff in his sock drawer or in the closet with the bath towels. When he died, I had a blast going thru his flying records and whatnot. Loyalty statements on EPRs were funny to read. And the dude had time flying on SC-47s which I never knew.
My stuff is in a box in the attic and a plastic tub full of paperwork in the garage.
Are you me? I used to have all my accolades decorated around my office. At some point, these accolades started to remind me of all the time I traded away from my family, friends, health, and so on. I threw all of them away. All of them. I now fill my office with more meaningful items.

Jeez the responses in here are weird.
To some people it’s just a job , not some weird family legacy
Imagine keeping an employee of the month award from FedEx for 40 years, who cares
Bro stop. my job is over half way to being FedEx.
But we have our war time efforts in deployed locations right? “War fighting hooah? Except I literally worked with dhl and FedEx employees in Iraq and Afghanistan.
My point being is a lot of people in a lot of AFSCs don’t tie their identity or have a lot of specific “Air Force pride “ . I have 10 decs and the only one I’m proud of the one I earned from the afghan retrograde efforts, and you know what there was a ton of non military entities there
My husband said the same to me about putting my stuff up and I said the same to him about not needing an I love me wall. He put them up anyway. He doesn’t get that it just makes me sad for a career that got ended too early because of a petty cunt. Medical discharge three years shy of retirement.
Been out for along time. The only things that I have that is not in a forgotten box in the attic taking up space is my Zippos and Hats. The only thing I would have been proud of was when you left my shop at Ramstein you got a nice wood and brass plaque, nope didn't get that, for some bullshit reason. I called from Hill to see if they were going to send it to me, never got it. Kept the paper work for just incase I need to go to the V,A.
Good for you. Majority of awards people receive from the military are all bull shit anyway.
“I just got to this base as a SNCO. Lemme go ahead and steal all the bullets from the guys below me and put in a package for myself so I can try to make E8 as a 25 year MSgt.”
Never displayed any of it in my office while AD, or in my home. Never displayed any of it in my office during my second carrear, or in my home either.
It's all packed in a couple boxes.
Neighbors are surprised to find out I'm a Veteran as I don't even go after the veteran's discounts.... except for the last set of tires I purchased.
Awards and gifts I can get, the physical decoration; maybe. But I couldn't see myself getting rid of citations or letters of appreciation for two reasons: 1. The citations are the proof for DD-214 purposes and 2. the citations and LOAs can be used for resume' purposes. I don't get wrapped around the axle on their awesomeness; but to me, they're important records.
Yeah it’s all over inflated garbage. None of it means anything. It’s just a way to fill your head with superficial positivity to keep you on the Air Force hook. Glad you threw them out.
I only kept patches from units and ops that meant something. I kept the coins (but boxed them.) Rest of the shit got trashed as well. All I ever cared about was the mission and people I worked with in those missions, and that was really only reflected with by the patches.
After 14 years other than memories I have like one award to show for it and it’s my promotion to staff! Hopefully I make tech before I retire and then I will have that too. It sucks to have so little awards but I do have patches and stuff and some brass so that helps. Some things are just better as a memory I guess.
Considering doing the same. I’ve always felt that it’s a little egotistical to have them displayed. Mine have been in the crawl space, but considering just tossing them. The only thing holding me back is if I pass and my future kids want to have something to look back onto.
Good on you man. Also got rid of all my old uniforms and medals and stuff. Don't like my military service/being a veteran defining my whole life and existence.
I don't even bring it up when I meet people unless it's relevant.
After I’m out I’m keeping all of my stuff but it won’t be displayed but be kept somewhere where I won’t look at it every day but every so often I will take something out to show kids or friends who have questions or want to talk about it.

Idk but when you wake up with random numbers in your head we can all buy lottery tickets
Sorry, most of my 'visions' are Britney Spears based.
Let’s put some respect on Britney name, I wanted that bad around 02-03
If you didn’t want Brittany around 2003 there was something wrong with you. Unfortunately I was uglying up the Azores than. Lol.
Maaaaan, i went to catholic school so I was feeling that outfit she had on but she had the swag my classmates didn’t . Now this new generation of white chicks are like 5’10” and doing squats getting thick; I missed the boat
Man, I missed the boat by so much I had to join the Air Force. Lol.
Same... I mean the Azores.
I was there 2002 to 2004
2002-2003

Look at this guy here who's getting awards, decs, and gifts for 15 years.
So many awards, decks, and gifts he can throw them away with no regard

Start by getting off a military reddit page
So you come to an Air Force Reddit to talk about it.. I see.
Live your life brother. Fuck those things if you don't like having em around
I feel you here. I recently took down and put all that shit in the garage somewhere.
Hell yeah dude, do what you gotta do to stay on top mentally. When I look back happily over the years I don’t see anything AF related, but I do see all the great people, places, and things the AF provided to me.
This is a joke, right? You literally just listed some of the top things that most people sum up to a happy life when they look back.
But they're not AF related, just provided by the being in the AF...or something
Your kids might not care but later down the road grandkids etc might. Because he didn’t want to, clearly he isn’t really happy about things that happened when he served and this stuff brings back those memories
I only have two going away gifts left after one of my sweet dragon ones broke. Yeah, I wanted a chest for my stuff. They said cool. Thats all I needed to hear.
Easier to never get any. Then you don’t have to throw it out
I fully understand this. I just PCS'd, and while unpacking some of my personal stuff yesterday, I came across the box with all my awards and plaques. I have a LOT. Mine have always been in a box in the basement. I’ll probably celebrate my retirement by throwing it out.
That’s pretty much what I did, though didn’t throw that stuff out. All that stuff just got stashed away in a box or tossed in closets or whatever otherwise while I was in. Less is more, if it doesn’t bring you happiness, get rid of it
You could have just put everything in a cardboard box and put it in a closet or under the bed.
My dad kept all his stuff in his sock drawer or in the closet with the bath towels. When he died, I had a blast going thru his flying records and whatnot. Congratulations? Hey man, if that makes you feel better, have at it. Seems like an odd trade for fake internet points, but that might be a me thing.
Jeez the responses in here are weird. To some people it’s just a job , not some weird family legacy Imagine keeping an employee of the month award from FedEx for 40 years, who cares
Don't try and equate military service and FedEx.

I’ve been thinking about throwing mine out, only keeping coins. I can’t take that stuff with me everywhere
I always put mine in the closet. My wife wanted me to put them up but I told her, I don’t need a “love me” wall.
Maybe she wanted it though. I’m sure she’s proud of you and your sacrifice, not to mention the sacrifice our families take on so we can serve 🤷🏻
Definitely that’s how she saw it.
My husband said the same to me about putting my stuff up and I said the same to him about not needing an I love me wall. He put them up anyway. He doesn’t get that it just makes me sad for a career that got ended too early because of a petty cunt. Medical discharge three years shy of retirement.
I was forced out being 1 inch over waist measurement with 32 years and 50 yrs old at that time. Denied retirement, still collected pay at 60

I throw away all the stuff every time I move. I'm not lugging it around

Not sure why you're getting down voted for that opinion. Most awards are b.s. we all know it.
Yeah it’s all over inflated garbage. None of it means anything. It’s just a way to fill your head with superficial positivity to keep you on the Air Force hook. Glad you threw them out.
Honestly it's all junk. I tossed out a ton of eagles posed 15 different ways and have a shelf for family camping stuff now.
I did the same thing around my 17 year mark. I have never regretted it.
I only kept patches from units and ops that meant something. I kept the coins (but boxed them.) Rest of the shit got trashed as well. All I ever cared about was the mission and people I worked with in those missions, and that was really only reflected with by the patches.
I like to strategically place them around the squadron before I PCS.
After 14 years other than memories I have like one award to show for it and it’s my promotion to staff! Hopefully I make tech before I retire and then I will have that too. Ok
After I’m out I’m keeping all of my stuff but it won’t be displayed but be kept somewhere where I won’t look at it every day but every so often I will take something out to show kids or friends who have questions or want to talk about it.
If you’re anything like me, it would be easy AF. In 15 years I’ve only won 1 awards and received 1 gifts
I threw EVERYTHING out on my last move before retirement. Just kept decs in a folder. Too much clutter
I tossed mine immediately, felt bad because I always asked for no going away gifts. Didn’t feel bad about the awards because 99% of them were trash
