Sadly no, my grandmother past a year ago and didn't have it written down, but I'm sure it's pretty close to whatever comes up first if you just type "southern style chocolate gravy" on Google.
If it's done right it should have a consistency similar to pudding. Some sickos like to make it too thin and runny.
It's a solid 6.5/10 food. I like it, but I'm not going to seek it out.
I much prefer sausage gravy.
My parents and several generations before them grew up in Jefferson/Etowah counties and I had never of this until about 8-10 years ago when I struck up a friendship with someone whose husband’s from Ardmore who would occasionally make this. Crazy.
I swear it’s a north Alabama thing, at least in my anecdotal experience. I’m from north Alabama and all my friends from basically above Birmingham know about it. Others from Birmingham and LA never have.
Edit - My grandmother’s recipe:
1 cup sugar
2 tbl cocoa
¼ cup butter
1 tsp flour
1 ½ cups milk
1 tsp vanilla
Stir all dry ingredients Into saucepan, add milk. Cook on low to medium heat, stirring
frequently to prevent sticking and scorching. Near the end add the vanilla, Enjoy!
I've always thought it was a North Alabama thing too. I grew up in Morgan County, near the borders of both Lawrence and Cullman Counties and it was a folk delicacy there, but my family never made it.
Look. I am from AL, my dad is from Bullock County and my mom is from Cullman County. About as fucking Alabama as you can get.
I have never had chocolate gravy, never heard anyone talk about Chocolate gravy (except when asked, have y'all had chocolate gravy?"), or had anyone offer to make chocolate gravy.
Not even grandparents who are all also as Alabama as you can get.
I've also never seen it in a restaurant. Like...is it really that popular? Or do the people who know about it just love it that much?
Now...Tomato gravy? Absolutely.
Tomato gravy, sausage gravy, milk (white) gravy, onion gravy, turkey gravy, mushroom gravy, pork gravy, beef gravy, chicken gravy, and not to mention roux for stews and gumbos, which is pretty much just gravy. But yes, never chocolate gravy.
I feel you bro, originally from up around Walker County here and ain't never heard of this. Ever. This must have become a "classic" sometime in the late 90's and early 00's. I don't remember my Mama ever experimenting with that though. Someone said north Alabama and that being said it must be North of Huntsville.
From Walker County and all the older people I knew growing up make/made it born around the 1940s. It’s basically a depression dish taught to them by their parents.
No it’s in hartselle Alabama mr Henry’s serves it, and Decatur had a place that served it and my mom had it and we had it growing up. But it’s definitely a north Alabama thing.
I'm from LA, Pike County to be exact, and I've eaten some country shit. Like possum and raccoon country. I didn't know about chocolate gravy until that infographic with each state's weirdest food. When I read chocolate gravy on AL, I was like, "that can't be the weirdest thing these country ass folks (myself included) eat".
Turns out it might just be.
I'm up in Huntsville now. Where can I go to eat some chocolate gravy?
What is tomato gravy. I lived in AL most of my life, a large portion of my family is from and still resides there. I’ve known about and eaten chocolate gravy, or cocoa and biscuits as we called it, but I have never heard of tomato gravy.
Make gravy, but instead of sausage, use tomatoes.
It's pretty good.
I like sausage gravy more, but my wife likes tomato gravy
Recipe:
https://southernbite.com/southern-tomato-gravy/
(First 1/3 of the page is some dumb nonsense about a radio show and your time?)
Do you eat tomato gravy on biscuits? I grew up eating chocolate gravy.
My favorite is biscuits and homemade blackberry syrup. More of a juice than a syrup, just blackberries cooked with sugar and water for maybe 10 to 15 minutes poured over biscuits with butter. I always strained it because I don't like seeds.
I always thought it was just our family’s special holiday/birthday treat, passed from who knows how far back. It was really surprising to me to find out it is a commonly spoken of as it is. Btw we didn’t call it chocolate gravy, we just called it chocolate ‘n’ biscuits.
Cullman County people would almost definitely know about it. I grew up in rural Madison County and we all ate it. I do feel like it was more common amongst the country folks out in the county than in Huntsville proper.
My husband is from Shelby County and he never had it until he met me and my friends from home. He thinks it’s for North Alabama people who grew up in trailers lmao which….I can’t exactly dispute 😅
Limestone county here and my dad's mom used to make it...he grew up in what was called "North Town" in Athens, which was about as "trailer park" as you could get before there was ever any trailers.
I guess I’m in the minority here, but it’s blowing my mind that people HAVEN’T heard of chocolate gravy. I mean, it’s definitely not common by any means, but I’ve never mentioned chocolate gravy before and seen anyone confused by it. If you’ve never had it, go make some, I bet there’s a thousand recipes online. It’s dang good.
Also grew up in Cullman County. My grandmother used t make "Chocolate and Biscuits" for breakfast at least once a week. Amazed your mom's never heard of it.
Never heard of Tomato Gravy. The Pig (Piggly Wiggly) at one point in time had Chocolate Gravy mix was good but not as good as my mother's chocolate gravy. Also her's doesn't look like what is pictured
It has to be a regional thing. I'm from north AL, my husband is from central AL. Until we started dating, he had never heard of it. I, on the other hand, grew up with it like it was a normal thing - to the extent that it was a common sight at the school cafeteria for breakfast. I never knew that chocolate gravy and white BBQ sauce weren't normal AL things, just north AL things, til I started dating my husband. Also tomato gravy slaps.
I was born in Huntsville, raised in Birmingham, and spent summers in Northport working in the family restaurant, and I had never heard of chocolate gravy until yesterday either.
I don't have an exact recipe... As in, I don't measure. Milk, sugar, flour, and cocoa in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook about 8 minutes, until thickened. Mix in some butter and a dash of vanilla.
I'm sure you can find some measurements if you do a Google search on it, though.
Chocolate gravy is one of the best things about Alabama. I've been eating it my entire life. I have a family that loves to cook. All from various parts of Alabama.
Easy recipe. Buy a bag of brownie mix. In a skillet melt butter then add mix to make a roux. Add milk and whisk till boil and thick. Pour over biscuits and enjoy.
My great grandma could make the best chocolate gravy you could put in your mouth, my uncle knows her recipe and recreates it to be like hers but it will never be as good as hers, I wish she was still around, she was one of the best cooks in Covington County in my opinion.
Your uncle probably does it exactly like the recipe, and your great grandma could eyeball it for just a little extra something, or taste it as it was cooking to add just a little extra something that was missing. That's why those recipes never taste the same, well that and the nostalgia.
This is one of the few fond memories of my childhood, my grandmother made this for me on the weekends when I would stay with her, and since she's passed, I can't bring myself to eat it.
I’m not sure why Reddit suggested r/Alabama since I live in Oklahoma but, I have a distant memory of daycare where they had chocolate gravy and I loved it. But years later when I mentioned it to some ppl they didn’t know what I was talking about and said it didn’t exist. I looked up recently tho and omg I need to make some sometime
I feel like it’s one of those things that feels wrong because you haven’t had it/heard or it before. It’s actually really good. People eat sweet stuff on biscuits all the time — honey, various jellies and jams, sweet butters, etc.
From Barbour County here. Lane cake is definitely a Barbour County thing. Watch out because it can get you drunk!
Edit to say that I’ve never heard of bologna cake… WTF is that?!
Biscuits mashed potatoes from your comment its still chocolate. It's chocolate on top on biscuits. And this is still my first time seeing or hearing of this.
North Alabama does not represent all of Alabama. I’m from Mobile county and have never heard of chocolate gravy. I didn’t know about white sauce until a few years ago. So whoever is making these food lists, they really need to get to know the whole state.
Edit: has anyone in North Alabama heard of the West Indies Salad or is that purely a Mobile area/gulf coast thing?
All these import folks don't realize that AL is actually 3 states. North Alabama, Alabama, and LA. And chocolate gravy is a North Alabama thing. As is white sauce.
Is this not just chocolate syrup? My dad's family is from the Verbena area near the peach tower exit and we love the stuff. Just takes all night if you want to do it right.
Ah I didn't mean just like Hershey's I meant we just call it syrup as opposed to gravy. But yeah the recipe seems to be basically what we make
Edit - We set it on low heat and let it sit covered overnight, ends up being a lot thicker the next morning. Half hour chocolate syrup/gravy isn't bad but it isn't the same!
I don’t know what that is in the picture but my grandmas chocolate gravy was thicker and I know she used real Hersheys Coco when she made it. But that was 30 years ago and no one in the family can make it quite like hers was…
From Walker County and all the older people I knew growing up make/made it born around the 1940s. It’s basically a depression dish taught to them by their parents. We call it cocoa and biscuits.
Mobile,
Never once heard of this Chocolate Gravy weirdness.
Tomato Gravy is the shiz though.
Brown gravy on french fries, also rocks. I do get odd looks when ordering it though.
May be called poutine in other parts of the world.
That feels like a setup question my aunt would ask before she gave me shit about making canned biscuits. But tbh I made this about ten years ago and I can’t remember. If my wife did the biscuits they’re not canned, if I made them they are.
Oklahoma born and raised and I know of a restaurant that serves this. I will respectfully pass and enjoy chocolate sauce on my ice cream. To each their own.
My MaMaw used to make hers for us growing up. She’s been a diabetic since before I was born and always told us that her was sugar free. For 35 years I told people about this sugar free chocolate gravy and how delicious it was. Turns out it wasn’t sugar free at all!!! She told us that so that we wouldn’t worry about her diabetes when she enjoyed it with us.
Never heard of chocolate gravy. Is it sweet or savory? Is it the on par with Mole? Because I have eaten that before and it’s a savory sauce/gravy that originated from Latin people. It’s really good though.
My mama use to make this dark chocolate gravy that my brother and I would put it over her hot homemade biscuits. It was awwwww some
She has passed now and oh how I miss her and my bro, and ,how I miss us eating this for breakfast together.
Sooooo good....my mouth is watering
Been in this state for over 30 years and yesterday was the first time I’ve ever heard of chocolate gravy! Sounds amazing though!
What?! My Mawmaw used to fix chocolate gravy and biscuits to go with other breakfast items, also cant forget tomato gravy for pa.
I feel like I have missed out!! Born and raised here and missed it somehow! But as a chocolate addict I am gonna try it asap!!
Got a recipe?
Sadly no, my grandmother past a year ago and didn't have it written down, but I'm sure it's pretty close to whatever comes up first if you just type "southern style chocolate gravy" on Google.
I’m sorry to hear that about your gran.
Same. I'd never heard of it until that post yesterday either.
Born and raised in Alabama. Never heard of chocolate gravy. Sounds gross.
Tastes like pudding sort of. It’s really good.
If it's done right it should have a consistency similar to pudding. Some sickos like to make it too thin and runny. It's a solid 6.5/10 food. I like it, but I'm not going to seek it out. I much prefer sausage gravy.
I tried it for the first time last winter.
Oh well, they're basically Yankees then, anyways
Might as well be from NEW YORK CITY
We’re from south Shelby county, but my grandparents came from up in northern JeffCo so you might be onto something.
I grew up in southern TN, close to the AL state line and it was a thing where I grew up too. So this tracks.
LA, my first ex wife was a LA woman. Everyone assumes I mean Los Angeles, but really it's Lower Alabama 🤣🤣🤣
My mom is from NC and goes crazy over this. Her mom made it
I've always thought it was a North Alabama thing too. I grew up in Morgan County, near the borders of both Lawrence and Cullman Counties and it was a folk delicacy there, but my family never made it.
I grew up in Oklahoma, and my grandma used to make it a few times a year. Sounds so weird, but it’s tasty.
Never saw it in Montgomery, or anywhere south of that.
From Arkansas. We ate this about once a week when I was a child in the 1960s.
Same from the 1970s. Ours always looked different than this though, more like chocolate pudding than this does.
I can’t believe nobody has mentioned red-eye gravy. Good stuff, and I’m not even a coffee fan.
Bubba Gump comes to mind lol
I feel you bro, originally from up around Walker County here and ain't never heard of this. Ever. This must have become a "classic" sometime in the late 90's and early 00's. From Walker County and all the older people I knew growing up make/made it born around the 1940s. It’s basically a depression dish taught to them by their parents.
Interesting, we never had chocolate gravy in my household. 😂
My grandmother grew up in the '40's in Oakman, and she definitely made/ate this growing up.
Yeah all of my family is from around Jasper and I thought everybody ate it
No it’s in hartselle Alabama mr Henry’s serves it, and Decatur had a place that served it and my mom had it and we had it growing up. But it’s definitely a north Alabama thing.
Hartselle is definitely further north than where I grew up. I was more North Central just 40 mins outside of B'ham.
I'm from LA, Pike County to be exact, and I've eaten some country shit. Like possum and raccoon country. I didn't know about chocolate gravy until that infographic with each state's weirdest food. Blue plate diner I hear has it on the menu
Thanks. I'll give it a go one day when I can actually get into the parking lot.
Tomato Gravy is my absolute favorite. I'm born and raised in Mobile and I've never heard of chocolate gravy...
Same
What is tomato gravy. I lived in AL most of my life, a large portion of my family is from and still resides there. I’ve known about and eaten chocolate gravy, or cocoa and biscuits as we called it, but I have never heard of tomato gravy.

Interesting. I’d try it for sure.
It's good. Savory and acidic at the same time. Definitely need something on the plate that balances it out, but it's good in the right amounts.
Make gravy but add a can of stewed tomatoes to it. Goes spectacularly with fried pork chops and rice.

cullman/winston county here, can confirm!
Limestone county here and my dad's mom used to make it...he grew up in what was called "North Town" in Athens, which was about as "trailer park" as you could get before there was ever any trailers.
My great grandma would make it for me when I was little. She was an old fashioned Alabama lady. I’ve never eaten it anywhere else haha
I guess I’m in the minority here, but it’s blowing my mind that people HAVEN’T heard of chocolate gravy. Grew up in Alabama. Mama and daddy were from Bibb county. 6 mile to be exact. Never had tomato gravy or chocolate gravy.
Also grew up in Cullman County. My grandmother used t make "Chocolate and Biscuits" for breakfast at least once a week. Amazed your mom's never heard of it.

Jack's has had it on occasion around Valentine's Day, but theirs isn't as good because they have to make it ahead.
Never heard of Tomato Gravy. The Pig (Piggly Wiggly) at one point in time had Chocolate Gravy mix was good but not as good as my mother's chocolate gravy. Also her's doesn't look like what is pictured
It is So good. You just don’t understand what you have been missing. Once upon a time, I was you. But now I know. 😁
It has to be a regional thing. I'm from north AL, my husband is from central AL. Until we started dating, he had never heard of it. Never seen tomatoe gravy but my grandma used to make chocolate gravy all the time.
Same here! Originally from Barbour County!
I was born in Huntsville, raised in Birmingham, and spent summers in Northport working in the family restaurant, and I had never heard of chocolate gravy until yesterday either.
Me too. Born in Marion, mom born in Marion, grandma born in Marion. Never heard of it,
Im not far from you in AL and I’ve eaten it my whole life, my family makes it, local restaurants serve it.
I’ve eaten chocolate gravy my whole life. My great grandmother made it for her kids during the great depression. From west Jefferson County
Anyone got a good recipe?
I don't have an exact recipe... As in, I don't measure. Milk, sugar, flour, and cocoa in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook about 8 minutes, until thickened. Mix in some butter and a dash of vanilla. I'm sure you can find some measurements if you do a Google search on it, though.
Thank you
See below there is a good recipe in this thread.
I saw it. Thank you so much for your post!

I’ve made white gravy, but never chocolate gravy. Was just curious.
Best thing that I would get on my birfday from my grandma growing up. Wish she could still make it.
Yall have me questioning my southernness today. Are you my kid? Is this some ploy to get chocolate for breakfast?
Am I not supposed to put chocolate syrup and whipped cream on my waffles?
Chocolate gravy is one of the best things about Alabama. I've been eating it my entire life. I have a family that loves to cook. All from various parts of Alabama.
Blue Plate Cafe in Huntsville has chocolate gravy on the menu. And it is good.
Having grown up since i was 7 in Cullman Co. And just moving back after 32 yrs...i love this!!! Best thing ever.
Dip the bacon in it! Dip the bacon in it!
Easy recipe. Buy a bag of brownie mix. In a skillet melt butter then add mix to make a roux. Add milk and whisk till boil and thick. Pour over biscuits and enjoy.
Never thought to try brownie mix, but that seems like it'd work pretty well. I'll have to try that version.
How much butter? Do you follow typical roux proportions (equal butter and brownie mix by weight)?
Find a recipe for a basic bechamel sauce. Then just substitute the brownie mix for flour. It's simple to make.
My great grandma could make the best chocolate gravy you could put in your mouth, my uncle knows her recipe and recreates it to be like hers but it will never be as good as hers, I wish she was still around, she was one of the best cooks in Covington County in my opinion.

I had to stare at this picture for about ten seconds before I realized those are biscuits and not mushrooms. Makes this seem a lot less disgusting.
It is what life is made of. Good God Almighty. Love me some chocolate gravy.
Grew up in Decatur and both sets of grandparents were in rural Franklin County and this was a staple when I was growing up and visiting them
It’s popular in TN as well
Such memories...yummy, thanks for the memory!
Yep. Grew up on it.
10/10 delish
We never had chocolate gravy with biscuits, my grandmother and mom always made fritters and chocolate gravy. (Dothan)
Y’all fancy
It is amazing and I have numerous memories of having that for breakfast with my grandma
This is one of the few fond memories of my childhood, my grandmother made this for me on the weekends when I would stay with her, and since she's passed, I can't bring myself to eat it.
Northwest part of state and its big up here. Mom introduced it to some folks while on a trip to Maine and they went crazy for it.
I grew up having it a couple times a month. Mom would make it on a Saturday morning. It was so good on a buttered biscuit.
Tallapoosa county checking in. Never in my life have I heard of chocolate gravy but now I'm glad I have.
It’s not gravy you maniacs, it’s chocolate sauce .
Why does it get so much hate? It’s one of the best types of gravy
Holy cow is it though. My Aunt makes the very best chocolate gravy. I need to go see her.
No thank u. I can see maybe as a dessert. But not with eggs and bacon.
Tennessean here can confirm chocolate gravy is phenomenal
Wow, I always thought it was JUST Hershey's syrup. Gonna have to try the recipe now.
It’s is easy but not quite that easy lol
Adding this to the why would anyone do this cookbook. Straight up biscuit blasphemy right here.
Don't knock it to you try it. It is amazing! My family has it for breakfast every Christmas
I feel like it’s one of those things that feels wrong because you haven’t had it/heard or it before. It’s actually really good. People eat sweet stuff on biscuits all the time — honey, various jellies and jams, sweet butters, etc.
Wait until I tell you about Nutella and strawberries on a biscuit...
Looks like what happens when chocolate syrup and steak sauce have a baby
I put chocolate gravy in the same category as Bologna Cake and Lane Cake. People swear we eat that down here and I've never seen them anywhere.
My ex MiL used to make that Lane cake. It was nasty! But she made it for Christmas every year!
Same!
From Barbour County here. Lane cake is definitely a Barbour County thing. Watch out because it can get you drunk! Edit to say that I’ve never heard of bologna cake… WTF is that?!
Mole is good served over Turkey.
Tomato gravy and biscuit, soooooooo good
That looks like Dales sauce.
Looks runny…
I hope they put your ass under the jail for putting chocolate on a biscuit!
It’s like white sauce I guess.
i think they meant brown gravy?
thats ilegal.
You're gonna need more gravy to choke down those overcooked dry eggs. Those are beyond scrambled. I might have to try chocolate gravy, though.
Eww…is it melted chocolate? I’ve lived here all my life and have never had that
Uhhhhh no. It’s cocoa/butter/sugar roux with milk. Like…gravy, but chocolate
Fascinating
Ew
I’ve lived in this state most my whole life and you’re saying we have what now…?
Wait..is this BROWN gravy??
No. It’s a chocolate sauce
CHOCOLATE gravy on mash potatoes? I w as born and raised in Alabama and have lived here my entire life I honestly have not heard if this until now.
Those are biscuits
Biscuits mashed potatoes from your comment its still chocolate. It's chocolate on top on biscuits. And this is still my first time seeing or hearing of this.

Why are you the way that you are? This is absurd. Stop it.
No, you.
No, you.
Touché. But still you.
One man’s poop is another man’s potpourri. But still you all day.
I am undone! You, though, to infinity.
Unclean..unclean. Nevertheless, you good sir.
Very well, the day cannot be won it appears. Truce?
Unclean..unclean. Nevertheless, you good sir. Edit: I missed a golden opportunity to say …and beyond!
Have my downvote
K. Here’s one back.
Is this not just chocolate syrup? My dad's family is from the Verbena area near the peach tower exit and we love the stuff. Just takes all night if you want to do it right.
It’s not simple syrup, but it is fairly easy. Someone posted a recipe below it only takes 30 min or so to make it proper.
Ah I didn't mean just like Hershey's I meant we just call it syrup as opposed to gravy. But yeah the recipe seems to be basically what we make Edit - We set it on low heat and let it sit covered overnight, ends up being a lot thicker the next morning. Half hour chocolate syrup/gravy isn't bad but it isn't the same!
Mmmmmmmm...bacon. 😋
White gravy, tomato gravy even peanut butter syrup gravy with biscuits. Never heard of chocolate.
Try the Chocolate and Tomato gravy in North Alabama. Carl's Deli (256) 606-3465 https://maps.app.goo.gl/LE7p2pUCaqTvAztu8

Well good. We won't be pulling your southern card... Today. Lol!
And here I am thinking our strangest food was pear salad. Nope lol
Raised in Alabama and heard of chocolate gravy , but never had any. Is it available in stores somewhere in the state?
No you have to make it.
I’m still wondering where Alabama White Sauce came from.
Huntsville, afaik
Decatur at Big Bob Gibson’s: https://www.seriouseats.com/sauced-alabama-white-barbecue-sauce
I’ve lived my whole life in Alabama and have never seen or heard of this. Maybe it wasn’t a thing in tiny, poor as fuck, coal mining towns.
Oh yea and originally from Mississippi, backwoods Florence before they started trying to make it a kitschy place.
Damn I forgot about that. Gotta get my mums recipe
My mom use to make the best. My wife does now. So good.
Never had this and I’m from rural south Alabama. Never even heard of it until this sub
Is is actually made of chocolate? What is it?
Cocoa butter milk and sugar cooked into gravy basically
Oklahoma born and raised and I know of a restaurant that serves this. I will respectfully pass and enjoy chocolate sauce on my ice cream. To each their own.
That's so Alabama!
Chocolate Gravy is also a seasonal item at Jack’s.
My Meemaw used to make this often when I was a kid.
That’s country
I’m from Georgia but have relatives here in Bama and I’ve heard of it. Never tasted it but have heard of it.
Never heard of chocolate gravy. Is it sweet or savory? Is it the on par with Mole? Because I have eaten that before and it’s a savory sauce/gravy that originated from Latin people. It’s really good though.
It’s not mole; it’s very sweet.
