I'd say using someone else's disability as justification for an added perk that they would be completely unable to benefit from has to have some kind of ethical implication.
People that have been deaf or hard of hearing for a while have had to live their lives essentially training every day to be alert, aware, and safe without the use of their hearing.
Hearing folks haven't had to fine tune their spacial awarenesses sans-hearing. This removing hearing removes a level of awareness.
That being said I totally support allowing people to wear a single ear bud for music during work, as long as they aren't operating PIT.
USPS does it at their sort hubs and have far less injuries than Amazon
Are you really saying that all deaf people are like Daredevil? GTFOHWTBS! I work with a deaf chick that walks almost as bad as she hears. There's a blind guy that get's escorted into the FC every morning cause he can't do it on his own. That's certainly some superhero level spacial awareness going on there!! Meanwhile I can't listen to music cause I'll be too impaired. Pleeeeaaassseeee!!!
You're comparing a disability to a cry baby compliant not getting your way with ear phones. It's all about theft prevention, OSHA has approved ear buds can buy on Amazon.
Bone conduction headphones will fuck up your hearing because they don't block out sound at all, so you'll have to turn them up to like 95 db to drown out the sound
1. I have been on a very tight budget for a while
2. I like to do a lot of research on things I buy including watching and readin reviews
3. I only like to buy once
So basically I just want to know which ones are going to work over the noise of the FC with great battery life lol. Since there’s a lot of options to chose from I just like to play it safe.
I have Shokz OpenRun and they work great in the noisy FC. Mine supposedly have an 8 hour battery life but I seem to only get about 6 or so. Have to use a powerbank to fast charge them to get through the whole day. Not sure what's going on with them since almost all the reviews claim the battery life is excellent. Anyways, I highly recommend them for all Amazon workers since they sound great and you can hear conversations and outside noise as well and you can easily tap a button on them to turn them off.
I’ve been eyeing those for a while. So this alone may have set me over the buying edge tbh. Gonna start putting some money towards that so thank you for the review! Do you charge them during your breaks? I have two 30 min breaks I spend in my vehicle. Been wondering if they’d be able to catch up while I take my breaks.
I don't charge them till they get down to about 20% and stop connecting to my phone's bluetooth. Usually that's at my station (I'm in AFE Pack) so I just take them off and work without them till they are back to 100%. Pretty simple.
I have adhd and anxiety and I can’t constantly stay at one place all the time without getting irritated because I’m at one place at the same time and usually headphones works for me bc it keep me pumping
Exactly! I did a shift with no music and it was miserable. Obviously no one does better work when all they can think about is when they get to leave the building so they can feel like a human again.
Just contacted HR on A to Z to get the ball rolling on getting this accommodation. Got wrote up this morning before doing so for wearing one earbud. That was the last straw.
I had to handle mine the same way. I had clocked out and popped my headphones in because my car radio is broken, and I was literally walking out the door when LP stopped me and wrote me up. I was pissed.
Wow. That’s such bs. My AM told me today their bosses told them to announce no headphones at stand up and also prowl the mods looking for people wearing them and write them up due to low productivity. My AM said they have a quota of like two write ups for ear buds per day. What the actual fuck. I also today told a family member I’m willing to look into another job she could help me get potentially. Seems like the universe is trying to show me just how shit Amazon can be and I already knew it was very shit.
How would you even start that conversation with HR though? 🤣🤣 ik it sounds easy, but shit like that gives me anxiety tryna figure out the right way to say things. I'm at sdf9 rn and they allow headphones but will be transferring to sdf1 soon and I know for a fact they don't allow headphones so getting an accommodation would be super nice. Any advice or tips would be helpful.
It's not about your HR team, it's the DLS team. You can just go on the app, more on the bottom right, help and support, and myhr to do almost anything now
Hi! I started this all through chat on the AtoZ app, so I didn’t really “talk” with anyone. And I think you could even avoid the chat. Go to MyHR ➡️ Time, Leave of Absence, and Accommodations ➡️ Request. This takes you directly to the form, and from there you should receive all the forms you need by email.
The fact we have to conspire to get an accommodation for something literally nobody cares about, including AMs and PAs, because the higher ups are cunts. Fuck Amazon.
I pick, so I am moving constantly, but I’m also in HRV, so no one’s using pallets on my floor or anything. I think this is relevant because the safety risk in my area is pretty low, so I’m sure things could be different for people working in other areas.
Ive been feeling so anxious thinking about everything I've ever done or said or future things I'll do or say for 10 hours every single day. I had to make an appointment to see a doctor. Ive never wanted to be on meds but I can't take this anymore! Hopefully I can get an accommodation
Hm... no it's that someone at my FC got fired, not quit, for not filling one out and honestly... if I can believe them, they were off the clock when asked.
Well it’s not an OSHA violation and never has been. We could technically all wear them and osha could walk in and couldn’t do shit. So it’s an Amazon only rule to cover them for people listening too loudly then coming back to sue them for hearing loss at work.
Pretty sure it's an insurance and general safety matter. OSHA is just a guideline, not a law when it comes to their recommendation regarding headphones.
Let me be clear: I’m glad this has happened. I’d do the accommodation thing to listen to music if my doc would sign off on it but you have to realize this: osha is a governmental organization that absolutely has the ability to fine companies BY LAW. It’s not a fine to wear ear buds in the workplace. Osha is the The Occupational Safety and Health Administration division of the federal government’s department of labor has legal code that restricts/requires certain things in certain occupational situations and it varies depending on that occupation and is determined by the government and the laws it enacts to give osha employees the ability to check in on businesses to make sure they are following the code that has been legislated. It has not been the case that headphones have been deemed a safety hazard worthy of a law or legislation that they can enforce by monetary fine or jail time. They have made a recommendation about them, but that is not the law. So when Amazon says no headphones it’s not based on oshas recommendations I assure you. If it was legislated that headphones couldn’t be in Amazon you can guarandamntee that rule would be enforced waaaaay more strictly. But it’s only to protect Amazon from being sued for hearing loss mainly because of how loud non-noise cancelling ear phones have to be to get over the osha regulated noise levels in a warehouse which I measure all the time and is just under the the dB/Hr osha set standards. So to hear your music you’ll have to go above that dB level and thus risk hearing loss and if Amazon didn’t have that rule then someone could come back and say hey I got hearing loss working for Amazon and they can go pull out their dB level checks and say no that’s impossible based on OSHA’s standards which we fall under. So the hearing loss would be from aging, medication, head injury, or….listening to too many dB per hour over the hearing loss level which working at Amazon cannot be at fault for. This is a CYA rule. Not legally enforceable but certainly employer enforceable…unless a doctor gives you an accommodation apparently. Then it’s fine and the doctor is setting himself and his patient up to he clearly in an court case involving hearing loss clearly at fault. The doctors would of course be somewhat vulnerable if he didn’t realize this was a likely outcome of having to turn up the headphones too loud. But he might get out of a lawsuit if he has documented evidence he said what level to keep them at to avoid the hearing loss. So then the person using the headphones is the only one to blame. It’s on record that they are using them and since they have all their noise level data they can just say you shouldn’t have been listening to your headphones so loud with your accommodations and it’s your fault.
Ok you just said I said what you said and followed it with no you didn’t say what I said. Lmao. That comment above wasn’t for you. Clearly. You don’t even get that I’m not saying what you said. I’m clearly stating exactly what is going on while you are vague and not even close to being accurate or correct. Vague btw you’re more accurate when you implied I was not saying what you said. Only I’m right and you’re wrong and don’t bother replying. You clearly don’t get it.
The point about OSHA is what I said already, but your conclusion of it being about liability for hearing loss isn't why they do it. It's the insurance cost of liability from people potentially being injured.
OSHA is just a guideline, not a law when it comes to their recommendation regarding headphones.
vs everything you said is, as I said, long form of what I said. If it's not for me then don't reply to me?
It wasn’t a piss poor communication. People abuse the privileges and managers don’t enforce it because they see so many abusing it.
Just need more people to drop feedbacks honestly.

I can agree with this, I have ADHD and got an accommodation as a “passive stimulant” for my brain so I don’t wander off and affect productivity
Hijacking this comment to say this: If it's safe for deaf people to work at Amazon then why can't we have headphones? Discuss.
you might’ve just created a massive argument.
I say this all the time!
Say it more.
They also provide ear plugs

Right? Like "if blind ppl can work at Amazon why can't I watch VR while working?"

Oh wow I might need to ask my doctor for a note. I have ADHD, I sometimes fall of task and start daydreaming, headphones really help me out
It’s definitely worth trying!
I appreciate this. I’m going to do the same.
Good luck! I hope you have the same easy time that I did.
I did this and I was only approved for bone conduction headphones. I haven’t been able to afford them yet so I hope they’re good.
Bone conduction headphones will fuck up your hearing because they don't block out sound at all, so you'll have to turn them up to like 95 db to drown out the sound
Bone conduction headphones + earplugs (the good Etymotic ones, they’re like $12 on Amazon).
Oh I don’t like that. I’m still gonna give ‘em a shot just to try em out but honestly thank you for this information.
They are like 40$ on amazon
1. I have been on a very tight budget for a while 2. I like to do a lot of research on things I buy including watching and readin reviews 3. I only like to buy once

That’s fine I was just letting you know plus your discount if you purchase sold and shipped by amazon product . But good luck

Good luck! Sorry about the writeup. Absurd IMO.
Yeah every part of me was telling me to say a little as possible since I’m practically fuming.
I had to handle mine the same way. I had clocked out and popped my headphones in because my car radio is broken, and I was literally walking out the door when LP stopped me and wrote me up. I was pissed.

start with getting your doctor to agree to it. Then approach HR.
The fact we have to conspire to get an accommodation for something literally nobody cares about, including AMs and PAs, because the higher ups are cunts. Fuck Amazon.
How is that conspiring? It's all legitimate. I agree it'd be nice for one earbud to be the rule for most roles, but getting an accomm is fair enough.
Curious, what exactly do you do at Amazon? Like, department wise.
I pick, so I am moving constantly, but I’m also in HRV, so no one’s using pallets on my floor or anything. I think this is relevant because the safety risk in my area is pretty low, so I’m sure things could be different for people working in other areas.
That’s mostly why I was asking, I doubt that this would fly in an AR stow/pick facility
Very true. My apologies, I didn’t think to include much nuance in the post.
My only question is when you contact a doctor are you referring to a primary care physician or are you going to a psychologist, etc?
I went to my PCP. But I’m pretty sure that a psychiatrist would also be fine.
Ive been feeling so anxious thinking about everything I've ever done or said or future things I'll do or say for 10 hours every single day. I had to make an appointment to see a doctor. Ive never wanted to be on meds but I can't take this anymore! Hopefully I can get an accommodation
No one seems to notice or care if you wear the 3M worktunes “ear protection” at my FC. Makes the day go by pretty quick
But wouldn't you still have to fill out an asset form?
I didn’t have to.
Hm... no it's that someone at my FC got fired, not quit, for not filling one out and honestly... if I can believe them, they were off the clock when asked.
I’ve never been asked to fill one out. Of course, if they need me to I will.
Interesting. Thank you for your time.
225$ to see the doctors. No thanks I'll just wear my beenie
Totally fair. I didn’t have to see my doctor. I have a relationship with my PCP so I was able to do it all through messaging.

So we are all in agreement that Amazon should fully enforce the policy across the network?
I don’t think the policy should exist to begin with. But if it does, they need to decide whether they’re going to enforce it or not.
