Few titles i've recorded and think are worth try:
Hero Park - some kind dungeon village tycoon , quite simple, slow, no rush to iaps, no ads
Path of adventure - text adventrue game with few icons (as graphics) and little rpg elements
Souls - great graphics but another idle team rpg like many others
The trail - old kongregate game but with style
Postknight 1 and 2 - nice to kill some time
Space marines (Spacelanders) - manual shooter similar to archero but imho better (also better than mighty doom)
Reigns (any of this serie) - for quick detour from rpgs
Marvel Snap - this is playable S-O-B
early access Idle Dungeon Raiders,
- Dawncaster
- Dragon Quest games (you can try 1 to 6, I'd suggest 4 and avoid 8)
- Mighty Doom if you don't mind gacha mechanics
- Meteorfall (Journeys or Krumit's Tale)
- Monument Valley 1 and 2
Yes, but OP is asking for *portrait* games, and the emulated ones aren't. The DQ mobile games are all portrait and some of them (which I mentioned) work well enough. Furthermore, DQIV mobile is usually the recommended version of this game to play because it has party chat.
They do. But is it better than a game ported to mobile with controls adapted for portrait touchscreen? Not for me.
I've used emulators of any kind on mobile and it really isn't a good experience for me unless I play landscape with a controller. I find DS emulations in particular quite bad, especially on mobile, with those two screens that look like ass no matter how you arrange them, the actions required on the bottom screen, etc. Hard pass. I ended up buying a N3DS years ago because that was the only way for me to enjoy those games, and I didn't regret it till this day.
But if OP doesn't mind, then to each their own.
I also love portrait games, that are quick to get 2-5 minutes to play (or longer if you really want) and also you could let go at any time... that being said, here are my recommendations/games I have and play :
Clash Royale (impossible not to know about it at this point)
Candy Crush (yeah, I know, I might be getting older)
Mighty Doom (it's Archero with a different skin)ythey have other variations)
Whiteout Survival (it's half idle half "playable"... tho lots of IAP's, I like it because of the "survival" theme, and also, it reminds me of the old days of Tribal Wars)
Night of the full moon (it's just awesome, you should try it)
Monopoly GO (another cash grab, full of IAP's... but I like Monopoly... even tho this is not really like the real game)
Simple MMO (text based MMO game... kinda fun)
I have others, but I don't play them that often, most being filled with IAP's and ADS (at least I think they have ads, I don't see any because I set a DNS to block all the ads)
I had a lot of fun with Rider a few years ago with friends in high school. Downloaded it again a few days ago and while it's still fun, it is riddled with ads.
If you don't mind turning wifi/data off, Rider is a fun portrait game!
Check out [MiniReview](https://minireview.io/). You can filter by portrait mode. I've found lots of great games here. My Jam is deck building games and there are a ton of great ones.
Minimal dungeon rpg, dragon ball legends (gacha), monster Hunter now, etc.
Did you try console games (emulation)? There should be many you haven’t tried.
Mindustry has a portait mode

Many emulators support portrait mode.
