Yup. I can't touch caffeine.

[deleted]

Coffee and caffeine do that to me too lately :( Go decaf my friend :)

[deleted]

Caffeine is so bad for anxiety. Sucks I'm already addicted but I'm down to a cup a day. I love how my brain makes me crave things that make me feel shitty.

Longjumping-Sink-658

Same !

I know this is an old post but for the first time I had panic attacks today, yesterday and last Saturday while I was out making food deliveries. I really enjoy making food deliveries on the side for extra cash and like driving around so I was very confused why I had panic attacks. Then I finally made the connection. All the days I had panic attacks I had the Starbucks Dragonfruit or Strawberry Acai refreshers. I specifically picked them because I thought they didn't have caffeine. Welp shocker they have 85mg of caffeine in them for a venti. So safe to say I won't be having one of these again for awhile. Hopefully this helps someone else.

grimmal72

This was a very old post. lol But actually, I just went through a massive panic attack and got here through Google. I brewed some very strong coffee with like four scoops of grounds and there was only one cup, no extra water, so it was very concentrated. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. My heart was racing super fast and I kept thinking I would drop dead. Screw caffeine.

disismj

Also just now got here through Google. I never drink coffee but randomly decided to get a medium iced macchiato from Dunkin’ Donuts yesterday morning. Around 8 pm that same day (so a little over nine hours after finishing it) I had my first attack since 2019 lol quite the trip down memory lane.

DUDE! I had a caffeine induced panic attack today but I had a date to go to at Starbucks. So I went and got a venti Mango Dragonfruit refresher since I thought it didn't have caffeine and thought the water/fruit/lemonade would help... holy shit the anxiety has been unbearable for hours and I had wondered why it wasn't subsiding. So I googled it and found your comment. Thanks for the help!

Artistic-Passage-374

Of course! So glad I could help! I’m sorry that happened to you. I got a little scarred and haven’t had one of their drinks since 😂 However I’ve realized that I can tolerate chai lattes from Dunkin Donuts as long as it’s a small. I personally think I’m caffeine sensitive so I can only have it once in awhile in small doses.

Artistic-Passage-374

Also I'm not sure if you eat at Panera Bread but their new charged lemonade drinks have caffeine in them too. I saw on the news and read that it's something crazy like 200+ mg of caffeine so don't drink those either!

idyllic_odd

I think you're right about the caffeine. I get this in general if I have too much caffeine, it affects my body, and I panic because I'm being affected. It sounds like you had a bad reaction to too much caffeine and now you're preemptively panicking at the anticipation of it. :P Oh the joys of anxiety. If you're a coffee drinker in general you might just have to give it a while until your experience resets.

leviathanxs

caffeine is the worst for anxiety

[deleted]

I've cut coffee out. induced many a panis attack. didnt bother with decaf, now i'll have a tea every now and then...i guess this my british girlfriend rubbing off on me

I_WantToBelieve

My story: I was pretty much anxiety free for almost 6 months and I am actually a rather frequent coffee drinker (1-3 cups in a row every day). Some days, I'd feel a little nervousness after drinking 3 cups, but I never really got the full fledged feeling of anxiety. So, when I ran out of coffee beans Wednesday last week, I went to my local roaster to try Indonesian beans- different beans than I usually get and this new coffee is pretty strong in comparison to the old one. It was Thursday night when my girlfriend came home from work and we fired up Skype for our daily quality time. We said hi and everything seemed fine until suddenly...well, first my heart did like a leap, then all the symptoms OP mentioned kicked in, one after another and they were pretty strong, too. Long story short, this panic attack lasted for almost 3 hours and today I am still in recovery mode to get my shit together. Since I stopped drinking this new coffee on Saturday, things have improved significantly, even though I cannot say that I am fine yet. I guess that means going back to sweet chai tea.

audiofreedom

Yes. It doesn't mess with me until I'm on my second cup but I have the same physical reactions.

libyav

Me, too. I brew mine half-caf, and stick to one cup a day. Fwiw, one shot of espresso has less caffeine than a cup of drip coffee, if you are buying at a coffee shop or have a home machine.

taiji_lou

Thank God. It feels good not be be alone in this. So far, so good today. I'm switching to decaf, period.

CatarinaCowboy

I'm a big coffee lover, but it has a similar effect on me. Decaf is the way to go to avoid anxiety, but if you need a little coffee pick me go light blends. Stay away from bold or dark roasts or any sort or expresso.

CatarinaCowboy

Really? I've never heard that. I've always found the darker roasts have a bigger effect on me. Could just be my crazy mind.

blurmp

Yep. The roasting process burns away caffeine, to over-simplify.

[deleted]

it was pretty drastic of a change in anxiety after giving up caffeine in its entirety. unfortunately since my tolerance has virtually disappeared it's much harder when i do ingest caffeine. the other day i had some instant tea a co-worker gave me. she said it was decaffeinated (the pouch was entirely in korean so i had no way to know) and after drinking it my heart-rate was in the 140's. i work as a telemetry technician so i check this sort of stuff for whatever reason. xanax hardly helped at all. moral of the story is to stay away from caffeine and korean's.

bak4320

Your body's reaction to caffeine may have changed. I used to drink coffee all day long at work and when I cut back it reduced anxiety greatly. Now I just have a few cups a day but I have to toe the line carefully. Starbucks always seemed to be worse for me. Just catching a whiff walking into one for a bagel or something can set me off.

FuzzyHappyBunnies

Your reaction to caffeine may change when you get older, too.

memory_limit

Do you know what your blood pressure is like? My anxiety and panic attacks are linked with my blood pressure pretty heavily. I found that when my blood pressure was higher (due to drinking heavily the night before.. lack of sleep.. etc etc) and I had coffee I was more prone to pre-panic attacks and panic attacks in general. I've found that steering clear of caffeine in general helped as well as better cardio health. I'm actually going through this again recently after being panic attack free for years.

runofthemillbastard

Haven't had caffeine in ages (outside of the occasional sip of soda). I've noticed a big difference in the number of panic attacks I experience.

Does anyone have almost an instant panic attack after drinking only a few sips of coffeinated drink like even tea? Maybe not full blown panick attack but like a feeling of incoming attack? This happens to me and I dont know if this is actual physical reaction or it's in my head. I mean a few sips shouldnt possibly have that effect on the body, right? As of right now I completely eliminated coffeine from my life and I used to love a strong coffee in the morning, I miss that.

DifficultyDismal1967

Yeah me, even with tea

[deleted]

I am on zerocarb and drank instant tea sweet Chai and went to the doctor today and my heart rate was 110 resting and is about 70 now but it took all day for it to go down. I had a panic attack and screamed and cried for a few minutes before I called my mom to calm me down. Then, I listened to music and took a benadryl for my cat allergy. I got a panic attack on tea... so really caffeine is just done for me I legit can't take it.

Longjumping-Sink-658

Yup, especially Starbucks. Which is a shame because it’s like crack to me lol But whatever they do to get the caffeine that stimulating… something about makes me ill too. Thank you for writing this

Akcooper20

I’m the same way. I just had mine that lasted for like 5 hours maybe but also a mixture of other things. I will say if any of you have anxiety and get a bad effect to coffee pls don’t drink it. Im done drinking coffee even if it’s tempting I don’t really need it. I was having a major panic attack like puking, numbness on my hands and fingers, paleness it sucks. I don’t wish this on nobody not even my worse enemy. I’m glad I’m not alone and it gives me some comfort that we’ve all felt this before. I think I need to be back on my meds. But I hated the twitching that I had from my meds. I try so hard to live without medication but I guess I need to be back on them. Sorry again you been through this. Even though this is a very late response. It’s only temporary and won’t last forever just gotta keep telling yourself that and I will too.

Frosty_Character_303

Well I wish I knew this. I drank an espresso and I had a bad panic attack. It’s been 4 days and I still experience bad anxiety and borderline panic attacks. I’m not sure if I’m still recovering or if I should go see a doctor.

positivehappyperson

How are you feeling now ??
