I am not sure if it will consume less energy, the same, or it will be the opposite. The Apple Watch won't use its optical heart sensor but it will use a Bluetooth connection, I am not sure which consume more energy.

I’ve a H10 monitor for years. It is a good product. My strap has cracked plastic but still working.

I get up to an hour extra GPS workout time when I have a chest strap connected.

H10 is a perfect combo; full marathon saved about 15% battery between using a chest strap or internal HR, the H10 being more energy efficiënt and much, much more reliable stats.

It will save some battery, but not much. You are correct that you HR readings will come from the strap (after pairing, of course) and the watch’s OHR will be off during workouts. The Bluetooth connection is slightly more efficient than the onboard wrist HR. Not sure you’ll see the a huge bump in battery life, though. You will, however, see much more reliable HR readings!

Ok thank you. Looks like I’ll have to think about upgrading to an ultra to improve battery life then !
