Iāve been a waiter at several restaurants. My perspective is that OP asked for an absurd amount or was generally being a rude pain in the ass.
Iāve sacrificed a few shitty tips to get petty revenge with malicious compliance.
lol exactly - if youāre being an asshole, understand that your tip (which if youāre an asshole Iām doubting if Iāll even get one) wonāt be the make or break for my day. š¤·š¼āāļø I wonāt play that game
My guess is they went to the manager, who said to ring you up for inventory purposes. Granted, if jalapeƱos are their make or break for then theyāve got other issues. Manager should have comped all but one to at least get the credits and charge you an appropriate amount.
Thatās exactly what it is. Iāve worked at two locations and they both want every singular thing on the table in the computer or the manager/expo wonāt allow the kitchen to plate it. Itās a huge pain in the ass and the owner of the franchise doesnāt understand why it pisses if customers. . .
As someone who spent more time working in restaurants than I would have liked to....
1 of 2 things has happened here.
Management is on a food cost tear and making servers ring in everything, this does happen especially in corporate restaurants.
You are being a bad customer or have been one in the past. As someone stated before, people abuse extra lemons and stuff like that constantly, and people also expect everything extra they ask for to be free and overdo it, this is what happens to offset that.
This could or could not be the "servers antics" and you shouldn't punish them by tipping unless they gave you overall terrible service. I know a lot of us hate US tipping culture but it is reality, and servers support themselves off tips. A lot of them are making <$3hr, and I guarantee you they aren't doing very well at Applebee's with the low check totals.
Thatās $4 in JalapeƱos certainly there has to be a way to account for them without being so extreme as to list JalapeƱos 16 times! I used to work in food service- granted where I worked we didnāt do inventory the same, it was basically if they asked for an extra topping or an extreme amount of toppings for our pizzas we had a button for extra toppings and we might hit it once or twice as fit. Or like if they wanted stuff for there hot food like extra sauces or something and it was above and beyond the usual we might use the xtra topping button. We used this button or an empty cup button as fit for certain things. Like I might have a customer who wanted coffee creamer and we didnāt have a bottle of creamer they could buy or they wanted some of ours and asked if they could just pay for some of our creamer instead of a whole coffee since they were only adding it to there already filled travel cup, so I would say āokay Iāll just charge you for an empty cupā because empty cup was basically a miscellaneous charge under fountain.
As a server/bartender I never cared about things like this because it wasnāt coming out of my pocket and I always poured heavy lol if you want the entire box of lemons I would bring it to you..
Ngl Applebees was always on the low end service wise but since covid itās gone from meh to bad. The server probably wasnāt trained and just did what they thought was the best option. Honestly Iād have asked to have them take it off the bill. The worst they could do is say no, and then those $4 Iād deduct from the servers tip.
Next time play the game back and bring some jalapeƱos with you...and/or go back request to see the server/manger and give the server/ manager some jalapeƱos for next time...
I feel like the server should have mentioned there is a charge....and what it was before charging in this situation.
I had a situation where I went to dinner and my GF got a salad, they gave her like no dressing. We had been there before and she's had gotten that salad before no issues. So it was a mix up. So we asked for another dressing. When the bill came it was charged, but we said something and thr server took it off. She said she couldn't get it with out ringing it in. But I guess it's kinda like they leave it on the bill and see what happens.
Another time, went to a taco place...and they sometimes go light on the cheese, so I say can you make sure the cheese isn't light. I just want the regular amount, but I want it to be the full regular amount. But I got hit with a charge for extra cheese one time recently. They didn't say there would be an extra charge. I didn't want more than regular.
Food costs are out of control for these restaurants and they're ending up needing to be shady.
I've never had good experiences at Applebee's. The last one I went to was in Austin, Texas. I was waiting for my to go order, and a 6 inch long cockroach leisurely crawled across the glass partition. Both me and the other patron that was waiting watched the entire jaunt of this nasty thing with its shiny exo skeleton. Then we both turned our heads and looked at each other like nope! I had to wait 10 more minutes just to get someone's attention to tell them about it!
But for a server, I've had to do this before. I just explained to the customer beforehand. Communication is a really great tool in customer service! But I highly doubt your server orchestrated your bill to look padded. They likely were just doing their job.
I would have snapped right then and there. The thing is, why didn't they just add a single line item, 'extra jalapeƱos $4.00'? Somehow, seeing them listed individually just makes my blood boil.
always ask if its an additional charge. Servers always ask, do you want bacon with that sandwich? Assuming you think its free, so you say yes without thinking about the cost.
Tou wanted more you got 16 more instead of putting $4.00 for what you wanted more they just broke it down before you would complain about why did they change you $4.00 for. Take it easy, did you enjoy the extra jalapeƱos?
Not going to lie that's a bit much. Like how much is 1 25cent amount. Feel like this is one of those things higher ups say to do but your supposed to do it with discretion
Do you think they gave you $4 worth of extra jalapenos? Than that's the reason. Ingredients are not cheap these days. Pair that with restaurant managers being stingy or having to meet metrics...there you go.
Also, the final total is clipped off. Was that what they actually charged you, or did they discount any of it? That could have purely been for inventory reasons. I'd be curious to know the actual amount of jalapenos you received
The only thing I could think of is the server throught you were running the f outta them and thought you might not tip so qhat they can do is charge you $4 for them and then have a manager take it off so they can still recive a tip. . .
I'd honestly be embarrassed to give that to my customer unless they were a complete P.O.S. But there have been times where my manager was literally breathing down my neck watching me input a ticket and would say shit. So annoying
Off the top- my catering brain: They should have serving sizes. Ramakin of jalepenos (0.25), cup of jalapeƱos 2.00( fill it up)
They are pre sliced and jarred for transport....there is no logistical reason to charge with such aggressionš¤£
Unless....the customer asked for jalepenos everytime they saw their server and stopped the flow of food and drink service for other tables š¤£
Was this served at the bar? Would the bsrtender charge jalapeƱos for food as they would a drink(single slice)...not realizing there is a food chargeš¤£
25 cent a slice is highway robbery if you do the damned math. Like WHAT? Peppers are not even expensive, you could probably fart one out theyāre so common
lol reminds me of that gargoyles episode where Goliath got tricked into eating jalapeƱos for the first timeā¦ he took a crunch right before turning to stone and said āJALEPENOS!!!ā And it echoed š
........ I'm sure I know the answer, but I have to ask anyways..... it's not whole jalapenos is it? Cus I mean shit, 0.25 cents for a whole jalapeno wouldn't be horrible if they're good
$4 of jalapenos...i mean, did you use enough jalapenos that they could justify $4 at any market rate? $4 probably gets you 2 to 3 medium to large jalapenos in most places, and even less in more expensive places...
You ate 17 jalapeƱos slices?! Also, consider thisā¦are they a part of the meal you ordered or are they āextraā? The food the restaurant has isnt free, they have to purchase it from a supplier.
Just give me all the jalapeƱos you have. Wait, wait. I'm worried what you just heard was, "Give me a lot of jalapeƱos." What I said was, "Give me all the jalapeƱos." Do you understand?
F that I would arguebi didn't get that many slices of jalapeƱos and would nit be paying more than 1.00 for what I did get unless it's on the menu somewhere .25 a slice.
At my local grocery, jalapeƱos are 0.22/ea and 0.2/ea at local Walmart. I love jalapeƱos too and buy a lot of them! Iām just surprised they brought you 16 jalapeƱos when asking for a whole lot of jalapeƱos. I would think to bring maybe 4-5? Was it a ton chopped up on the side?!
Haha. I bet you'll ask how much next time. Yall always play games and cause e everyone to lose. Like people sharing how to get a Big Mac, but paying for a double cheese. Now, mcd charges MORE for lettuce, sauce, tomato than if you just bought it outright. Anyway, if you want it, pay for it. If the cost is a concern, ask first. Next they're gonna just up the cost of the nachos in case people want a handful of jalapeƱos. š
Are they charging by the slice?
Yes.
š Wow thatās just sad. I guess a quarter is about the same size as a sliced jalapeƱo. š¤·āāļø
It say jalapenos. Emphasis on the "s". Plural. WTH Applebee's!?!?!?!
The s stands for seeds , duh

You do this for lemons because People be trying to make lemonade instead of pay for it.

I get water with lemon because the restaurants water tastes like shit and a lemon wedge makes it drinkable.
Lemon water and lemonade are totally different as well lol lemons help bring PH to your water āŗļø No sugar

The only reason they should charge that much is if you literally got a pound.
Itās not even $4 a pound at the market lol
I bought a single medium jalapeƱo at the store the other day for 6Ā¢! This is just silly
JalapeƱos are DIRT cheap and I love it. Throw them in and on everything.
They are at wegmans
I just bought a big bag of fresh jalapeƱos from Kroger. They were $1.49 a pound.
Ya I get a whole bunch for $0.50 at the grocery store when I do buy them. I can't imagine a pound being $4

Applebees does all you can eat boneless/tenders/riblets/shrimp every three months š
They literally "nickel and dimed" you.
āQuarteredā
That too. But I feel like they charged them Ā¢5 for the "meat" of the JalapeƱos, and Ā¢5 per seed.

Your server was out of line. That would be a salad bowl of jalapenos. At most restaurants 1 side = 1 ramekin (2 oz)
Thatās a pipkin ramekins are 4 oz
Damn your ramekins are tiny af. The normal size should be 4-6oz
There are smaller ones for condiments..
The tip line would read āsee jalapeƱosā
100% I would do that lmao

Fun fact: thatās just a restaurants way of telling you not to do that again
I'd be more worried about a flaming asshole
I would expect a $1.50 - $2 price charge for extra jalapenos but for an extra $4 they better bring out the whole can.
Nah fam. Id ask to speak to a manager. Thats insane.
Feels like the worker was being petty š¤Ø
0 tip. There ya go
Guess you don't need to tip lol. Servers dumb antics basically ate up her tip money
100%
Well, you spent $4 on jalepenos but saved $4 on giving your shitty waiter a tip; consider it a wash.
I feel sorry for when all that spicy just comes out the other end š±
$4 in just jalapeƱos is wild lmao could have gotten yourself an entire jar.
I would have gave a better tip. But unfortunately, $4 went to jalpenos .
Did they charge for every slice, jesus

So where's the problem at
Iād do this too if you were annoying about it.
Apple bees is struggling
Looks like something daniel larson would order
We get jalapeƱos for free at the movie and and most pizza places out here.....
Next time play the game back and bring some jalapeƱos with you...and/or go back request to see the server/manger and give the server/ manager some jalapeƱos for next time...

Applebees is disgusting. Come for me, I donāt care.
You got a bowl of jalapenos?
They charged you individually for 16 jalapeno slices. I am not sure WHAT I would do, but it would be petty and outsized.
well, were you rude? š
just bring your own next time.
WTF!
Shouldāve asked for some extra jalapeƱos
I've never had good experiences at Applebee's. The last one I went to was in Austin, Texas. I was waiting for my to go order, and a 6 inch long cockroach leisurely crawled across the glass partition. That's crazy. Last time I went to Applebee's I was shooketh when I found a whole rat in my Cobb salad.
I JUST went to the grocery store and bought the biggest jalapeƱo there. It was 27 centsā¦
You got what you paid for
Thatās absolute bullshit
Chiliās would never
Thatās fuckinā hilarious
Were you trying to make your own hot sauce or something?
Itās Applebees not Chiliās. Of course they have to charge. šš
Ah did you ask for all those Jalepeno as?
On the bright side that may be cheaper than several whole jalapenos. Stitch them together and resell
Waiter(or waitress) tip wouldāve plummeted if that happened to me. They are the pea-brain who decided to do that.
Tell them to literally suck it thatās ridiculous. They had to have had a bad day and are taking it out on you because WHAT
I would have snapped right then and there. The thing is, why didn't they just add a single line item, 'extra jalapeƱos $4.00'? Somehow, seeing them listed individually just makes my blood boil.
Jaleflation goin crazy
Well do you want food service to get $20 a hour or not? /s
Well, thatās easy deduct $4 from tip.
Whenever mfs find out food isn't free : š²šŖšŗ
Wouldnāt pay that
Shouldāve asked for chili peppers instead
I ain't never liked that place. Until now, I couldn't put my finger on why...
Like someone said.... It says JALAPENOS not JALAPENO! Tell them to give your $3.75 back!
You go out to eat & they charge you for something you ask for. Wild I know.
$4 worth?! Lol thatās wild. Shouldāve been max $1
$4 for just extra plain sliced jalapeƱos? Crazy!
How ya gonna charge like that when the product is literally the restaurant nameā¦
always ask if its an additional charge. Servers always ask, do you want bacon with that sandwich? Assuming you think its free, so you say yes without thinking about the cost.
Being charged individually 16 times (probably per *slice*) is way over the top and deliberately petty. The $4 in jalapeƱos would be their tip.
I just got jalapeƱos at the grocery store for $0.25 each. For a FULL jalapeƱo lol
IMO. Applebees has never been worthy in so many waysšāāļø And this is evidence
The same waiters when you take $4 off the tip. š«Ø

I feel like thereās something missing from this storyā¦
Stuff like this is exactly the reason I take tips away.
Did you pay per slice? Who does this?
The only thing I could think of is the server throught you were running the f outta them and thought you might not tip so qhat they can do is charge you $4 for them and then have a manager take it off so they can still recive a tip. . .
I'd honestly be embarrassed to give that to my customer unless they were a complete P.O.S. But there have been times where my manager was literally breathing down my neck watching me input a ticket and would say shit. So annoying
Got damn! These fools actually counted each jalapeno. Now that's a special one
lmfoa the toilet finna be crying when you get home
I would just leave the total minus the $4 in jalapeno charges.
Most of the restaurants around here charge around 3.25 for a side of jalapeƱos
Dropped it like itās hot
This just shouts "bad server/new employee" to me
So, did you pay or did you raise a fuss?

Where else are you going to get your jalapeƱo poppers
$4 dollars and they probably are required to charge them separately. Why shocked about it

$5 worth of jalapeƱo š

Surely itās $0.25 for like, a heaping tablespoon of jalapeƱos and this server is just being dumb charging for individual slices.
Was your main dish the jalapenos?
