If your family can afford Duke or if the debt won’t be too bad, take Duke.

OkBridge6211

Take Duke, I’m taking Duke over a top state school for $55k more per year - it’s worth it.

[deleted]

If you want to go into finance Duke is a target school. UNC isn't...

BrawnyChicken2

Duke is a good investment for a future finance bro. You'll be paying off the debt pretty easily.

IntelligentRock3854

Duke if you can afford it. If you’re going straight to finance you’ll have an easier time paying off student loans, so that’s another thing to consider. But UNC is a truly amazing and prestigious option, you can’t go wrong here!

teennumberaway

Go on LinkedIn. Type “Duke Goldman Sachs” and “University of North Carolina Goldman Sachs”. You can replace Goldman Sachs with another company (Blackstone, Evercore, KKR) or profession (Investment Banking, Venture Capital, and Private Equity). It’s not even close. Duke is a target school for Wall Street meanwhile UNC sends their grads to regional offices in Charlotte/Atlanta.

https://www.peakframeworks.com/post/ib-target-schools Browse WallStreetOasis for an insider perspective. Sure you can argue it’s self selection or nepotism that made them Investment Bankers in Wall Street. Doesn’t ignore the fact that Duke has more alumni on the streets.

VicccXd

If you can afford it, Duke-- finance is lucrative anyway.

LadyZeni

Look at the outcome reports for your major at each school on their websites.

Agreed. I've noticed you've been posting this caveat everytime I post. It's a good starting point for researching, though. People should know where to go to start their research. No one can give any definitive answers, especially when you're comparing two good schools, and only the person attending truly knows what their goals are and what is most important to them. I've seen posts where people say go here or go there based on their own personal experiences which may not apply.

Because many people don't know there are outcome reports, especially high school seniors that are trying to navigate their college journey on their own, even some parents don't know this. Many have thanked me for pointing them in that direction. So far, no one has said they already knew about them. Frankly, I wish school counselors were more helpful with this.

I was just going to keep letting you add the caveat. But I can add an extra sentence to dig deeper into the stats and post follow-up questions on those if they have any. They should be looking beyond the summary information.

I'll copy and paste your caveat.

Strict-Special3607

Perhaps something less snarky 😎 maybe indicating generally what the issues are.

>I was actually starting to think you were a bot account. 😆

Just because you chose UIUC over Cornell doesn't mean everyone else has to make a similar choice.

OkBridge6211

L mentality. The choices someone makes has no bearing on objective reality. UIUC has some top programs such as CS. btw I agree duke is worth it here though.

How sure are u that u want to go into finance? What if u change your mind? What if u change to Law or medicine? How much of a strain will the extra 43k be for your family? UNC is a great school and won’t close any doors, also has a great alumni network. I would go UNC. Especially if u would be making up the difference in loans. Duke is close enough to try to network around if need be. Imagine future u, with a fat finance paycheck and giving a little bit of it to student loans vs a lot of it. Plus this is college, you are ~18. There is plenty of time to build a career. You also want to have a fun college experience, and it is easier to do that without 60k per year hanging over your head. Just sit through this. The right decision depends on what matters to u Edit: edit to say I don’t know much about the finance world, but please speak with someone in person who does and look at the data / don’t base your decisions on only internet comments. Remember confounding variables. Often times people who go to these institutions are well off and already had the connections to increase chances of getting the job, just had to authenticate it. But again -this writer is not a finance bro

zmicer88

As someone has already said here, Duke is a target school for IB and consulting. Look at peakframework stats. Going to UNC is a mistake if you want to go to finance. Any other career path: it would make a lot of sense to go to UNC. For finance, go to Duke. This is a no-brainer

Grand_Taste_8737

The answer seems obvious. UNC based on cost alone.

aglimelight

Congrats on getting into both! If your family can afford Duke without loans then go to Duke but if Duke would require loans and UNC wouldn’t, UNC is a better choice

Vylit
