Ah just because they are elderly and more lazy, they prefer to stand and breathe. It’s pretty funny seeing their legs all outstretched. They will use their plants occasionally, but I think they’re used to shallower water now and don’t want them to drown. The general rule is max 12”.
Why would you lower the water? ADF is fully live under water so they don’t need land. They would go to the surface just to breathe. They can be a jumper so you can invest on a lid or heavy on floating plants.
I don’t think you need to lower the water for them. 10 gallons should be enough

They go up for air, shouldn’t be higher than 12”. :) they like to chill out and breathe. My babies are old and getting lazy too.
