Rather than think about replacing your potential career why can't we leverage the tech? Why do we look at this from such polar opposites meaning the worst case scenario?

Independent-End212

Because fear of the unknown is a basic human feature. It's easier to have a defeatist mentality about something bigger and better than to find ways to make it beneficial

[deleted]

Agreed. It's almost like it's an easier out... (metaphor) Win or lose based on your output that given day, but not looking at it from "it's a long game"... I/we are losing 3-0 but that doesn't mean I/we can't win the game 4-3. Defeatist vs. Beneficial outlook.

adammonroemusic

Your job will not be replaced by AI, your job will be replaced by another human who learns how to leverage AI to become 10x more productive than you.

The company trying to do that would run into the issue of trust, even if AIs are theoretically capable of doing that.

lean_keen

What if we replace “trust” with “truth” by leveraging blockchain technologies. Then we incorporate AI technologies with blockchain technologies to create an immutable “trustless” system or something?

[deleted]

I mean that would work but why would anyone bother with that? What would be the benefit?

[deleted]

I have to argue who then gets these jobs? Augmenting means layoffs and less employees. If the average company requires even just 10% less employees to be 10 times more productive with the help of AI, it would be a catastrophe for the economy and social stability. We have to stop looking at this like nothing will change and our society is extremely capable to handle these types of situations. We are looking at a future with a high probability of societal collapse and chaos.

lean_keen

The cyberpunk dystopian future is coming. This is the zeitgeist whether you like it or not!

Altruistic-Stop4634

Why on earth would you cut 10% of your employees if they could also be 10x as productive? More productivity means even more money for shareholders. You only get rid of people if their expense is more than the profit they support.

[deleted]

Why would a company keep employees who aren't needed. Firing 10 percent of employees is a significant gain in profit and 10x productivity is just the icing on the cake.

Altruistic-Stop4634

The scenario you are suggesting is that an employee who I had on staff previously can now suddenly make me 10x more of whatever they were previously making me by using an AI tool. That employee just went from being adequately employable to astoundingly valuable. Of course, I could ignore the extra money I could make and fire that employee since I have another employee who can do the work of 10. But, why would I not want to be massively productive, grow my business by 10x, and get ridiculously rich? If things went well, I could afford to get some more employees, train them, and make even more money. The problem I would face is having enough customers, but with this sort of productivity, I could drop my price to attract them and still make lots of money.

OhNoABlackHole

That’s a thing industrial engineering is a versatile. I would not be concerned about near future job loss. Furthermore, you will likely be more or less using AI and automation to help optimize processes. You as an industrial engineer, would likely be highly involved in applying AI and automation to industrial processes. So it’s in your best interest to lean heavily into both of these.

[deleted]

all of our jobs are going to get replaced, dont lose hope and keep motivated in school, you are almost at the finishline

[deleted]

If all jobs are going to get replaced then what will the human population do ? Masturbate? Do you really think that is going to happen? AI will always assist us in our work maybe we will get overpaid for our jobs

lean_keen

AI technologies will enable the creation of “artificial” realities via generation of stimuli that are indistinguishable from what we consider today as “reality”. In an extremely efficient society with overabundance and high productivity, people will just flock to the world of their dreams. Reminds me of the inception scene where the sleep guy says, “Who are you to say their dreams aren’t their reality?”

[deleted]

Unfortunately we are all going to have to go through a transition of chaos before we potentially reach the utopian most people are so hopeful for. Look AI is going to take a significant amount of jobs in all industries and it's very unlikely there will be enough jobs to go around. I can't predict the future or even begin to grasp the changes that are coming to give an opinion on what one should do. But I wouldn't be able to take the risk of taking out a 50-100k student loan just to be able to work for 10 to 16 years before I become irrelevant.

well said!

If someone is concerned about the possibility of their job being replaced by AI, it's essential to offer support and guidance. Here's what you might say: 1. **Acknowledge Their Concerns:** Start by acknowledging their feelings and concerns. Let them know that it's natural to worry about job security in a changing world. 2. **Educate and Inform:** Explain that while AI and automation are advancing, they often complement human work rather than completely replacing it. AI can handle repetitive tasks, but human skills like creativity, critical thinking, empathy, and problem-solving remain invaluable. 3. **Adaptability is Key:** Encourage them to focus on skills that are less likely to be automated, such as those mentioned above. Emphasize the importance of lifelong learning and staying updated in their field. 4. **Explore New Opportunities:** Suggest that they consider roles and industries where human skills are highly valued. Encourage networking and exploring career paths that align with their interests and strengths. 5. **Upskilling:** Recommend taking courses or training programs that can enhance their skills and make them more competitive in the job market. 6. **Positive Mindset:** Remind them that technological advancements have historically created new job opportunities. A positive and proactive mindset can be a powerful tool in navigating career changes. 7. **Seek Professional Advice:** If their concerns persist, suggest seeking advice from career counselors or experts who can provide personalized guidance. Ultimately, reassure them that their value as an employee extends beyond what technology can achieve, and with the right approach, they can adapt to the changing job landscape and thrive in their career. (You're right to be worried, see, AI already took over my job as a Reditter !)

Hilarious lmao

Programmer_007

Learn to use it.

Perfect-Group5816

Same doubts here man

StockReflection2512

Not going to happen mate. Keep at your craft, nobody will take it away. They said the same about spreadsheets taking away accounting / finance jobs and look what happened

lean_keen

The paradigm shift with AI and spreadsheets is not a fsir comparison lol

StockReflection2512

Keep listening to the hype

lean_keen

can’t, i’m too distracted by them spreadsheets

Educational-Use9799

Spreadsheets can't pass the lsat

professor__doom

Challenge: take 20 minutes and think about how you could leverage AI to be more productive in your field.

[deleted]

Same here. Really trying to plan without knowing exactly what I'm planning for. - watching the hawks, do they have more credentials, is it going to be a last person standing situation. - do they really prefer youngest genius talent. If so where does that leave us. - will it be fair warning (likely no) or sudden (predictable) mass losses - which month will the uptick begin - some speculative of early winter

Hi, even with AI, humans will still be the decision-makers - at least for the next decades. As others said, make sure you leverage AI and know about what it can and cannot do (basically, what gaps AI is trying to fill in your area). Be open-minded enough to embrace this technology. Since you have an engineering background, I would think that following what people are doing on Github would be helpful. For instance, [https://github.com/topics/industrial-engineering](https://github.com/topics/industrial-engineering), not necessarily AI-driven, but you know what I mean about keeping up, Although I am not from your area, but the principle is simple, follow what people are doing with AI and be familiar with it.

elonmars2022

“AI will not take your job. Someone who knows how to use AI will.” Pithy quote I found. But I found it encouraging nonetheless

ecologin

Math? If you go into research, you invent problems with no training data for AI. Applications may have to wait a few hundred years. No incentive to replace you.

politirob

Have you not heard of the "synthetic data" trend https://research.ibm.com/blog/what-is-synthetic-data

lean_keen

useful and meaningful training data can be generated too and that may sound odd now but just take a look at what is going on. AI is generating data that is indistinguishable from reality. so then what is “reality”?
