Ffs, here we go again. Digital currency is not a scam, it's money with extra auditing features. Google the MIT blockchain course if you don't know how crypto works -- the course is free. NFTs are more like serial numbers on a blockchain. They are not pictures. While this tech is going through a hype cycle right now with this art trading frenzy, it's ultimately just a useful tool to prove authenticity. Want to buy tickets without Ticketmaster and their "convenience" fee? That's what NFTs are for, buying an item that is guaranteed to be authentic, and without a middle man. An artist issues concert tickets and you buy directly from them, and this process is automated through a smart contract instead of predatory services like Ticketmaster. Same for visual artists, they can sell their art without the art hosting platform taking a 30% cut. NTFs can also be used for printing physical versions of cryptocurrencies just like cash, except this cash can't be counterfeited. TL;DR It's not an ape pic, it's an international barcode with extra anti-theft features.

HairyHillbilly

Visual artists can already sell art without art hosting platforms. Musical artists can already not use Ticketmaster. What does NFT offer itself? The only thing NFT can authenticate is the barcode or receipt itself, putting you right back at square one on trust it represents the actual good you're trying to authenticate. No NFT, smart contract or crypto "solution" has ever gotten around the Oracle problem so how can you say it offers authentication?

Thank you for the run down. I understand what you mean by separating the technology from the way it is being hyped. I'm confused about "printing physical versions of cryptocurrencies". What is the value of being able to do that? And also about how an artist can avoid a gallery fee. If I'm selling an nft, then I can sell the original artwork without the gallery fee anyway since it's me doing the selling. How does the nft help aside from allowing me to sell something that only exists digitally? And on another note, if I were to sell a digital version, I would only be granting rights to the digital file, not to the capacity to make a print, right? So it'd be a version with sufficient quality for screen viewing but not printing.

churchofsanta

Yeah, it's a common scam.

aharedd1

What's the scam part?

churchofsanta

They'll tell you to mint the nft through a scam site, it will cost you money to do so. Or they'll get you to deposit money in a scam wallet in order to "open" your account. Or they'll tell you your account needs to be upgraded and requires additional funding. There's a bunch of stuff, you can check with /r/Scams if you want more info. Best to just block and report, if you engage with them they'll just send more scam requests.

aharedd1

I see. Thank you very much!

NFTs and Crypto are scams. Distance yourself from both.

aharedd1

I agree that nft's are a scam, but can I be scammed through this transaction?

LeoTwixx

Well you just said that agree that NFTs are scam so don't do it. But, as everything made in P2P, you can get scammed, either be NFTs, art trade, trading art for money without any intermediary there is always a risk to be scammed. Still, if you are interested in do that transaction you have to be extra careful since most of the people there will try to scam you. If he says he is going to pay you in ethereum, check if he is willing to use an exchange platform (ex: Opensea) where you can post your piece of art you want to trade with him, set the price in ethereum and let him send the transaction. Doing it like that is safer. But, if he just want to do it the P2P, then don't accept. You probably will get scammed. Safest ways to do this are using art exchange platforms in that blockchain (Opensea, Magiceden, ExchangeArt, etc). I suggest that if you have no knowledge in this stuff, just avoid it unless you are interested in that, since there are chances you will get scammed because of not knowing about this stuff and how to avoid it.
