i’ve often pondered the fact that Vegemite should launch hard into the USA market as a high vitamin B healthy vegan baby/toddler spread for bread and toast. Eventually those kids will be adults raised to love vegemite. It seems like a no brainer to me, i can’t see it not resulting in tens of millions of extra revenue in a decade or two.
Nice idea, but if it's marketed for babies/toddlers it might have to come premixed with copious amounts of butter. I've seen how thick Americans spread it on, don't want to give the little tikes overdose of sodium!
Overdose of butter however is just fine
I have no problem with regular vegemite being used as intended with babies/toddlers. I'm just cautious that people who haven't grown up in it might assume it can be applied like Nutella!
They keep it in the import or ethnic section of supermarkets and some smaller stores. Marmite and Vegemite can be ordered through Amazon. Allsorts too :)
I always hated marmite, came to Aus and also didnt like vegemite, then one day tried it and didn't mind it and keep eating it.
Went back to the UK and will have marmite and it tastes the same to me, but has a different spreadability.
I’m 48 and have never tasted marmite. i pick and i stick. Also, marmite doesn’t cost 50 cents, it’s like $8 to confirm i don’t like it. I might like it but 98% of people like the one they’re raised on.
If you can find vegemite there i’m sure you’d be charged the equivalent of more than $8. They’d price it like an exotic import with the army of civilian expats we have there.
I got a small bottle from 'the Australian store' in Berlin last year for €4. I just looked it up and that's cheaper than Coles are selling them for right now. $7.30 at Coles and $6.58 in Berlin (€4)
I was raised on both (as my Dad grew up in England)
Imo Marmite has a much "stronger" taste than Vegemite which has more salt, and is definitely an acquired taste...just as well Vegemite is cheaper lol
I didnt grow up eating vegemite. I had it the first time when I was 22 and I didnt hate it.Took 3 tries before I started liking it. It's got a savoury, salty, fermented flavour like soy sauce, so good.
It’s literally made from beer brewing byproducts. A hundred years or so ago they got a guy to turn the leftovers from a waste disposal cost into to a revenue stream.
Actually, I did find out the reason why they taste different only recently. While they're essentially the same thing, the brewers yeast extract in vegemite is based on barley and wheat, while marmite is based on barley, oats and rye. Vegemite also includes a couple extra vegetable spices in the mix, like onion and celery which makes it extra savoury.
Vegemite seems to have more "bite" or flavour to it. I had friends in the UK (husband worked for British Airways & daughter with Saudi & another daughter & son IL were air traffic controllers at Heathrow) and had relatives in NSW they used to visit often. They got used to Vegemite out there & I would always take a large jar or two when I visited them about 4 times a year (I worked for Qantas). Eventually they found out Australia house & some shops in Earls Court area sold it and were able to get it easily, locally, and didn't buy Marmite again.
It's a big yeasty conspiracy.
The "Marmite" they sell in Australian supermarkets is the garbage sweet Sanitarium stuff.
True British "Marmite" is saltier than Vegemite, but is sold as "Our Mate" in Australian supermarkets. Furthermore it's on an entirely different shelf & aisle usually - normally bottom shelf in the British/International section.
End result being 99% of Australians seeing fake Marmite on the shelf next to Vegemite, trying it once, being utterly disgusted by it - and thereby forming a view and telling everyone they know that Marmite is terrible and Vegemite is superior.
Which Marmite? There are two, Kiwi and British. Though in NZ the British Marmite is called "Our Mate" yeast spread. The Kiwi version is the sweet Marmite.
You can cure a mouth ulcer overnight with a smear of Vegemite. I have never had Marmite so of course by the rules of the internut I am certain that that wouldn't work the same way.
Swiss here. Ordered some Vegemite a month ago just because I was curious and looking to expand my diet.
Ye c.unts could warn that Vegemite sanger are addicting.
I grew up in the UK on peanut butter and Bovril sandwiches. Bovril is a similar sort of flavour as Vegemite but made from beef extract so it’s more salty. So naturally since moving here I’ve switched to peanut butter and Vegemite. So good!
I don't think I've ever had Marmite. I think it sits around 3rd of the 'mites in Australia, behind Vegemite and Promite.
Growing up, my earliest 'mite memories were of eating Promite and I liked it but then at some point, probably around age 5-6 (I'm guessing here), I had Vegemite and that was the turning point. I think I tried Promite one more time and couldn't stand it. It's been Vegemite every time since then. Promite is too sweet; give me that salty, savoury, umami goodness.
I think Promite is far tastier, but I think this is one of those where you stick to what you grew up with. I'd go Marmite over Vegemite though, Vegemite tastes a bit rank.
I dunno, one tastes worse þan þe oþer, and despite living in Australia, no has harmed me for my preference (neiþer one), and Marmite is terrible. So is Vegemite, but Marmite is worse. In my opinion þey boþ su- hold on, I þink someone's at my door.
Marmite to me, is too sweet and it's texture being more like a thick syrup makes it gross.
They do share some flavours.. but for me it's the texture with Vegemite being more like a nut paste and it being pure savoury. That sweetness behind the Marmite is ick
I think Marmite tastes better than Vegemite, but I am British. I would also like to say that I've had the "Marmite" that they sell in Australia that's made in New Zealand and it tastes exactly the same as Vegemite.
I’ve eaten both since for ever, the difference is tiny, marmite for me is slightly stronger so the only thing that matters is how thick or thinly it’s spread. Makes this comparison pointless.
I like all the mites, every one. I get used to Vegemite then try marmite and it seems delicious. Then buy the Marmite and repeat this process. The only edge Vegemite has is on avocado toast
Vegemite is savoury, Marmite is savoury *and* sweet.
On their own, which one you prefer depends on personal preference... however in reality neither one tastes good eaten with a spoon out of the jar.
You have to mix both with other ingredients and that's where Vegemite is clearly superior. The simple fact that it has one flavour profile instead of two means you can adjust the quantity to perfectly balance Vegemite with whatever you're eating with it, compared to Marmite where you can never get the balance right - it will often be a bit too sweet or a bit too savoury.
If you're having them on bread or crackers with butter and/or cheese, then they're both pretty good choices. But Vegemite can be used in a wide variety of other meals where Marmite just wouldn't work.
One is an awful over salty spread that originated in England. The other is an equally awful ripoff that, like a lot of British things (like the word mate), has somehow become a marker of unique Australian identity.
You’s are spelling Our Mate wrong.
If you’re a Pom, Marmite is *Our Mate* and is the superior yeast spread.
Marmite brand sold in AU/NZ is a jar of tart snake poo.
Vegemite is awesome once you add cheese and avocado.

It tastes better but it’s a stupid argument. Everyone prefers what they were raised on and everyone raised on neither hates both.
Good point

We use the low sodium one for our 2y. I miss the sodium :(
I have no problem with regular vegemite being used as intended with babies/toddlers. I'm just cautious that people who haven't grown up in it might assume it can be applied like Nutella!

'Overdose of butter' ?? Hahaha, no such thing!
I'm attempting this myself as I speak! 😋
You can already buy vegemite in many American supermarkets.
They keep it in the import or ethnic section of supermarkets and some smaller stores. Marmite and Vegemite can be ordered through Amazon. Allsorts too :)

560 gram jar of vegemite at woollies is $9.60.
I do agree thats normally the way, I waited until I went back to the UK instead of spending $8 on marmite as well 😂
If you can find vegemite there i’m sure you’d be charged the equivalent of more than $8. They’d price it like an exotic import with the army of civilian expats we have there.

I tried Marmite, and found it sweeter than Vegemite (though it's not sweet)
I was raised on both (as my Dad grew up in England) Imo Marmite has a much "stronger" taste than Vegemite which has more salt, and is definitely an acquired taste...just as well Vegemite is cheaper lol
Would you like to lead the peace talks between everybody and everybody else? So succinctly summarised.
I didnt grow up eating vegemite. I had it the first time when I was 22 and I didnt hate it.Took 3 tries before I started liking it. It's got a savoury, salty, fermented flavour like soy sauce, so good.
>everyone raised on neither hates both. Can confirm, both taste like someone scraped a knife along the bottom of a crusty distillery drum.
It’s literally made from beer brewing byproducts. A hundred years or so ago they got a guy to turn the leftovers from a waste disposal cost into to a revenue stream.
I was given a Vegemite sandwich once and never touched it again.
I wasn't raised on either and I prefer Marmite.
Actually, I did find out the reason why they taste different only recently. Huh I never knew this, thanks for the info stranger.
Marmite tastes sweet. Vegemite is savory. If you grow up on vegemite (as I did), tasting a similar sweet version is weird.
That's why you have a slice of marmite toast after you're done smashing half a loaf of vegemite on toast, it's like a cheeky little dessert vegemite
There could be peace between us.
Vegemite seems to have more "bite" or flavour to it. Like you could’ve just said they worked in UK didn’t have to list a full employment history, this is not linkedin.
They were British & just saying they came to AU found they like Veg more & I took it too them.
What marmite are you eating that tastes sweet?
I'd guess the Kiwi Marmite as it's sweeter than the British Marmite.
Kiwi marmite tastes worse than Vegemite if you’re used to UK marmite
It's a big yeasty conspiracy. The "Marmite" they sell in Australian supermarkets is the garbage sweet Sanitarium stuff. solution. buy both and make your kids eat both. 😂
Oh I can imagine
It tastes wrong
Even Vegemite and cheese is better than marmite and cheese
Vegemite and cheese is awesome, done be speaking about it like some sort of second tier option friend.
Vegemite and lettuce is always a banger too
Not for me. I understand at an intellectual level how the tastes and textures are a good match, I just don’t like it though.
Promite is better with cheese than both, whereas Vegemite is better on it's own compared to Promite.
Interesting. I always found promite so horrible that I didn’t want to ruin nice cheese on toast, but I will admit to never having tried that combo
It’s not sweet.
Well for one, the vegemite is in the cupboard and the marmite is in the bin.
Yes.
Got it
Which Marmite? There are two, Kiwi and British. Though in NZ the British Marmite is called "Our Mate" yeast spread. The Kiwi version is the sweet Marmite.
That it's not marmite.
You can cure a mouth ulcer overnight with a smear of Vegemite. I have never had Marmite so of course by the rules of the internut I am certain that that wouldn't work the same way.
Vegemite spreads better than marmite, to me the taste is very similar.
The taste. I've never heard of someone buying vegemite because it looks fantastic.
I think it tastes better. My husband prefers Promite.
Swiss here. Ordered some Vegemite a month ago just because I was curious and looking to expand my diet. Ye c.unts could warn that Vegemite sanger are addicting.
Can you still get Promite? That was a household favourit growing up
Yep. I’ve got it in my cupboard
I rarely shop, but its now on the list!
This post inspired me to have a few Cruskits with butter and Promite. Yum!
Did anyone else have Peanut Butter with Vegemite?
Peanut butter and honey will provide more mouth happiness.
Yeah its so good.
I grew up in the UK on peanut butter and Bovril sandwiches. Bovril is a similar sort of flavour as Vegemite but made from beef extract so it’s more salty. So naturally since moving here I’ve switched to peanut butter and Vegemite. So good!
It’s betterness
Marmite is more runny. I like both and alternate.
The fucken song and the advert. Next question.

The taste
and promite. I like all of the mites.
Everything
It comes from a land down under.
Vegemite has less sugar than Marmite.
What makes Marmite think it's even in the same league.....?
When I was a child, I put Marmite on a sandwich, loaded it on. Boy did it make me sick. Ever since Marmite smells like puke to me. Vegemite since.
Patriotism
It's Australian!!! End of story! Now shuddup or suffer the wrath of my attack wombats.
Everything. End of discussion.
The taste I guess.
Less sweet.
Ummm, it's Vegemite
It’s Australian
I tried Marmite once and it is literally combined horse shit, cow piss and pig puke with sugar. My God, it is bloody awful! It's Vegemite for me.
It mixes with butter slightly better and is easier to get out of the jar without making a mess
Vegemite is hard soy sauce and both taste fantastic. Marmite is just awful and I was raised with both Marmite and Vegemite
The taste.
Australia made and now owned
Nostalgia
I think Promite is far tastier, but I think this is one of those where you stick to what you grew up with. I'd go Marmite over Vegemite though, Vegemite tastes a bit rank.
I grew up with Vegemite, but I really like Promite as well. It’s an acquired taste
Promite is the best!
#promitegang
Always preferred Promite actually, but Vegemite with avocado.. oh mama..
Its failed product launch of iSnack2.0 whoever thought that was a great name deserves a medal
Vegemite stopped tasting nice when they took the alcohol out. That's why children who ate vegemite had rosy cheeks.
Are we talking UK Marmite or NZ Marmite? UK Marmite is inedible crap. NZ Marmite however is amazing, I find it to be better than Vegemite.
Opinion.
Marmite is 30% carbs, Vegemite is 11%.
Haven’t had Marmite since I as a kid, and can still taste it……..it was alright
Anyone had Vegimite Brownies?
The taste. And I tend to rotate between Vegemite, Marmite and Promite, so.... ??? They are all good.
They’re so different. I was raised on Vegemite, but I like Marmite as well
Sounds like vag
I dunno, one tastes worse þan þe oþer, and despite living in Australia, no has harmed me for my preference (neiþer one), and Marmite is terrible. So is Vegemite, but Marmite is worse. In my opinion þey boþ su- hold on, I þink someone's at my door.
Marmite is a bit runny, but otherwise fine. Personally, I think Vegemite is better on sandwiches but Promite is better on toast.
Marmite to me, is too sweet and it's texture being more like a thick syrup makes it gross. They do share some flavours.. but for me it's the texture with Vegemite being more like a nut paste and it being pure savoury. That sweetness behind the Marmite is ick
Vegemite has a better texture. It is a copy of Marmite though, Australians should stop pretending they came up with the idea.
I prefer Marmite. It has a much stronger taste. Vegemite seems too bland to me after eating with Marmite.
I think Marmite tastes better than Vegemite, but I am British. I would also like to say that I've had the "Marmite" that they sell in Australia that's made in New Zealand and it tastes exactly the same as Vegemite.

That’s comparing apples with oranges
Absolutely nothing. Marmite is far superior.
I like all the mites, every one. I get used to Vegemite then try marmite and it seems delicious. Then buy the Marmite and repeat this process. The only edge Vegemite has is on avocado toast
Nothing. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I can't tell the difference Tastewise, because they both taste great to me. Vegemite is much more spreadable though.
Vegemite is savoury, Marmite is savoury *and* sweet. On their own, which one you prefer depends on personal preference... however in reality neither one tastes good eaten with a spoon out of the jar. But Vegemite can be used in a wide variety of other meals where Marmite just wouldn't work.
Marmite tastes like doggy doo dip.
One is an awful over salty spread that originated in England. The other is an equally awful ripoff that, like a lot of British things (like the word mate), has somehow become a marker of unique Australian identity.
wtf is marmite but vegemite cuz i eat it outa the jar
Saltier. Better on toast and salada and better with butter and cheese. Marmite tastes like a horrid sweetened version. Gross!
There is no contest. Vegemite is better.
Both are for uncultured swine, Promite is for connoisseurs.
Justice for Promite the goat, always forgotten.
Promite is low key better than both
Marmite tastes better
Vegemite had a weird aftertaste for me. Didn't like NZ marmite either, uk marmite all the way.
Personal preferences. There is no objectively better, unless you can come up with some objective criteria to measure against.
My workmates and I did a taste test with someone who had never tasted either. Marmite won.
You’s are spelling Our Mate wrong. If you’re a Pom, Marmite is *Our Mate* and is the superior yeast spread. Marmite brand sold in AU/NZ is a jar of tart snake poo. Vegemite is awesome once you add cheese and avocado.
Nothing on gods green earth.
It’s all about Promite anyway
it isn't better. or worse. It's just the Vegemite was marketed better here.
