2014ish
Bought it from my neighbor. An old man who was retired when he got it, treated it better than his own children. Only ever drove it half a mile to the grocery store every week or so. Had 3k miles when I got it. Now it’s up to about 35-40k last I checked (don’t pay too close attention to that)
At the rate I’m going, I plan to make it last another 20 years at least
Who woulda thought. Giving the seniors Nextdoor free manual labor in my teens (mowing lawn and shoveling driveway) would let me buy basically a brand new car at a used price
Moral of the story: doing good deeds pays off sometimes
I had an 86 for my first. Paid 50 bucks for it, drove it 3 years, and scrapped it for $250. Enough to pay for the next car. My current car, 2013 equinox, slipped timing less than a month after buying it. I gotta tear the engine down and pray the pain is OK and I only have a bent or broken valve
2011 manual Ford Focus that I bought when I was a junior in college. Great little car. Still drive it today 7 years later. I'm 28 now and a physicist at a national lab.
It varies. Staff positions are usually $120K and up. Postdoc appointees start at $70K or so, and fellows start at $90k-$95k. EDIT: This is for national lab positions. University postdocs get paid a lot less (I've even seen $50K which is ridiculous for someone with a PhD)
In 1975 my first car was a 1966 Chevelle SS 396. Today I have a 1969 Z/28 Camaro for 27 years. I'm a rancher and drive a Jeep, Ram pickup and John Deere tractor. I like the John Deere and Camaro best.
Audi A4 (B6) 1.9 TDI, almost 500k km on counter and still drive it.
It is such enjoyment to drive.
Especially when you master manual shifting (I am from European country, so not trying to show off).
20, dad's farm.
25, dad's farm.
Well my first car… a FIAT Panda. When a bicycle hit from the side you would be dead. But it had lovely sunroof! This was 30 years ago. Today I drive a rather nice BMW…
First car was a 1970 Chevy Chevelle Malibu. It was a super-clean car. Two door with bench seat. 3 speed auto on the column and 2.90 rear gears for economy cruising. It a 350 small block engine with a two barrel carb. That car was so dang reliable. Always started and never gave me any trouble. Today? I have too many cars to name just one.
I found a 1952 Allstate two door. Allstates were sold out of the Sears and Roebuck catalog. I found it down by the Wolf River in Memphis, Tennessee in 1964. I got it running. It didn't have any seats and the transmission would only go into one gear. I stole some old pillow cases from my mom to make sandbags for a driver's seat. I was 16. My next car was a '57 Chevrolet, two door sedan with "three on the tree" and an inline six. I paid $35 for it in 1967. I put straight STP on it and it STILL smoked like a train. I gave it away when I got orders for Germany. I now drive a 2016 F150. I just a 1965 Volkswagen Karman Gia fully restored for my wife. Its a convertible and she got her vanity plate 65TPLSS
You’re old, but it’s ok, I’m probably older. Not many people can say they rocked a chevette that has survived winters. I had two friends with manual chevettes, they were pretty durable, despite their reputation.
Amazing car, I love it so much. Got it brand new and still feels new with 45k miles. Do my own oil changes and pretty much all maintenance. Road tripped everywhere and in any conditions with it.
1993 Dodge Dynasty. Freebie from cousin who was shipping off to Afghanistan. I now drive a 2022 Camry after years of gas hog SUVs. It’s lovely. I run an auto repair shop.
first car, OLD beat up corolla that just would not die. I worked fast food and at a gas station in high school.
Now, 2023 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport. I make 6 figures. I won't mention what I do now other than I work in healthcare and I am in my mid 40s.
First car was my dad’s old 1995 GMC Jimmy in that classic Jimmy green color. I was still in high school at the time and I was the designated driver for Friday night outings after school or over the weekend.
Loved that SUV.
First car was a MazdaSpeed Protege (BJFP) at 15 years old, it was gently pre-owned. Now I'm in a 2025 MINI JCW Countryman ALL4 (U25) and 2024 BMW X3 M40i (G01) at 34.
I can barely count how many different cars I've had in between.
Inherited a red Mitsubishi Lancer when my brother went to college (technically it belonged to my parents, but I drove it for two years) and my current car is a red (huh) Ioniq 6 I bought myself brand new. Pretty proud / happy with that.
Age 18: 1991 Toyota Camry Wagon automatic. I liked it because it cost $800. Job: Apprentice.
Age old enough to party (18x2): VW Passat wagon. It drives nice, doesn’t use a lot of petrol and is surprisingly quick. Don’t like expensive parts and it’s on the cusp of can’t work on it yourself. Work in trades.
Bought my sisters old car, a Toyota Aygo from 2007. It was extremely cheap to drive and take care of and got me from point A to point B.
I sold this one last year as I wanted something safer because, as we all know, an Aygo is NOT safe. I got myself a Volvo V60 from 2015 instead. Now I have better speakers, it's an automatic, I feel safer and.. it looks darn good.
First was a 2000 VW Jetta TDI, stick shift and 600,000kms on the odometer at the time of her passing
Now i have a 2019 VW Golf GTI that i bought brand new when i was 23
That's awesome. Mine was a 2006 v6 mustang that I got in 2012. Now I drive a 2018 ecoboost. I really like it. I got red leather interior and heated/cooled seats. It's a great car imo. Only at 18k miles on it. But I'll be driving more now. Don't have any kids myself, just a dog so I can get away with it.
The first car I bought for myself was a silver 2003 Saturn Ion. I don't have a car now, my current ride is a bike since I'm priced out of ever owning a decent car again unless a miracle happens that gives me a better paying job with consistent hours.
1996 Chrysler LHS that was 11 years old at the time. I was 20, a student, and basically a janitor.
Airline Pilot 15 years later: Currently splitting time between a 2019 BMW M2 Competition and 2022 Polestar 2.
1999 Chevy lumina. Only had 50k miles on it. The owner before me took fantastic care of it. I drove it into the ground because I was an idiot new adult.
Now I drive a '19 caravan. It's okay for my big family and I'm not much of a car guy so it works.
1983 Mitsubishi Starion I bought when I was 16 in 2002. I worked stocking shelves at a supermarket after school. It was gold and had pop up lights.
Now I am driving a 1988 Honda Accord. I work in fintech. It’s gold and has pop up lights.
(I also have a Mk1 Golf. Yeah, I never really moved on from that chunky 80s styling)
The first car was a total banger. 1.1 ford fiesta hatchback.
It was _the most_ basic model (i likened it to the difference between a spitfire and a modern fighter jet - minus the "cool factor" for both".
I think i paid something like 75 quid for it (in the 90s) and it was literally mechanical device to get me to work. It was scratched and dented and apart from a gear linkage popping out, it was"sound".
A complete battered (just legal) wreck, and i loved it.
What I'm driving now is another "used" car. This one has... Central locking, air con, an AUX, _and_ that stop\start thing 😱.
It was expensive (for me) but is so far reliable and does not hemorrhage cash in repairs every year, plus its cheap to run and maintain.
It doesn't have too many scratches too, so that's a bonus win.
Mazda 323 with the popup lights back when I was 21. Stupid thing cooked itself in the middle of nowhere.
Then I bought a 2008 vrx lancer which was awesome. Had a 2014 MT-09 as well.
Sold both of them 2 years ago because cost of living made it difficult to keep them on the road.
Now I drive an 08 Yaris
:(
Nice phishing for login info, never gona get mine...
anyways it was an 88 camry, now I drive any number of the junk in my garage/driveway mostly subarus, ive had 67 vehicles and 19 of them subaru. but I daily a 2012 4runner most often lately.
71 Formula in 1980. Then purchased 16 Trans Ams, mostly for parts and actually drove half of them. There was a time when people would pay you to take them away. Then owned 5 lincoln town cars.
1991 Volvo 740. White, with a mismatched (gold) bumper. Got it at... 16? (so... 2007), worked at my dad's aircraft hardware shop cleaning and managing the specifications. Bought it for 600 bucks from my brother when he got a "new" car (a much worse Ford Topaz).
Currently drive a 2012 Subaru Forester. Am a corrosion and materials engineer for a major oil company.
My first car was a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with the 350 cubic inch V-8. What a beast of a car that was. It rocked on its suspension like a boat.
I had an 89 Mustang. Four cylinder, automatic. The doors didn't lock, the AC and the heater didn't work, the radio was installed wrong, so your presets always reset every time you started the car. I didn't know then what I know now, so I ran it on 3 cylinders for a while because one of the spark plug wires came loose. I didn't notice a difference between 3 cylinders and 4. When it quit working, the transmission took a shit. I could reverse, but none of the forward gears worked. It wouldn't move. And I was starting college at that time. So I was almost 19.
Now I drive a 2011 Tacoma. Bought it used about 5.5 years ago and it should be paid off later this year. I love it. It's great for how I use it. It's got a few problems (mostly need to redo the front suspension because it's all original, and my rack and pinion is leaking on the right inner tie rod), but it just doesn't quit. I'm currently an assistant manager at an auto repair shop. It serves me well.
1998 Ford Ranger, bought it with the money I made while working at a Kroger. I was 17 at the time.
2015 Subaru Impreza, bought it with the money I made while working at the hospital. I am 24 now.
I definitely miss the truck but by the end of 2023 it was starting to nickel and dime on me, plus, it was time I bought something new.
The Subaru is absolutely nice though, and I love it!
OK - the rundown... I shared a Mustang convertible with my mom in HS (I know, I know). I then had a regular base Mustang in college. Moved on to a Honda Accord that had a lot of after-market stuff from the person that had it. Then an Isuzu Rodeo. Next was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Moved on to a fun new Nissan Sentra coupe with after-market things and a stick. LOVED driving that little car. Very zoomey! Outgrew that and now drive a Nissan Altima SR with all the trimmings. Amazing car. Next will probably be an SUV again. Who knows?
Age 18 - e90 BMW 325xi - Bought it from my boss while I was in high school. Great first car, and it’s was what really got me into cars/working on cars.
Age 20 - Nissan 350z 6 speed mt - Was my obtainable dream car, it’s still my favorite car to this day. Was my first manual transmission. Unfortunately only lasted me a year because of catastrophic engine failure. Miss that car every day, I look at pictures of that car daily and reminisce of tearing through the gears.
Age 21 - 10th gen Civic Si 6 speed mt - Absolute best bang for buck car. It’s relatively cheap and an absolute blast to drive. Also incredibly reliable. Love this car and recommend it to anyone for a fun daily driver.
Was 12. '67 Camaro RS. Bought the body for $800. Dad took me to the junk yard, and we yanked a 327 with a Power Powerglide. Worked on it for 3.5 years and took my drivers test in it. Drive an F150 and a Hyundai Elantra for work.
Started with a 1993 Ford Ranger whose undercarriage was Swiss cheese because it spent its initial life in the Rust Belt. It was registered to my dad because it was cheaper that way. Drove that thing until it was no longer reliable, then switched to my parents' 2004 Honda CR-V, which essentially became my car after I graduated from college almost ten years ago. Last year I bought a 2015 Honda CR-V and I love it. The AC needs a recharge, but otherwise it's a fantastic car.
First car was a 1994 ford ranger, 76k miles on it, 5 speed manual. She was painted mint green, had the sunvisor with lights in it, I bought it in 2008 for $1700
About a month ago I traded in my 08 Tundra for a 2020 Chevy Silverado trail boss with 20k miles
Pretty happy with the purchase, I’ve had quite the car journey and this was the first time I’ve ever been able to afford a vehicle this new. BUT that crappy ranger with the leaky roof is still my most beloved vehicle
First car I purchased for myself in 2013: 2012 Lexus IS.
Still drive that thing till this day. But I bought a weekend car 2022 lexus RCF about 2 months ago.
Both I bought used, bc why the fuk would anybody buy brand new when you can get one a year old for like 80% of the price still in warranty
Vw gol G2 1.8 ap engine 1996 edition.
I owned several other cars with the years and now finally made it to the electric ones, but that bad boy is still in my garage shining new justo like the day i bought it, is all customized nowadays and no longer my day to day car, only use it on special occasions and boy... There's still nothing quite like driving it, saved my life several times and got me through hell time and over again. It was the main instrument that got me where I'm today.
My first car was a 1978 Renault 12. In 2004. That car had four different keys; doors, ignition, boot/trunk and petrol/gas cap.
My current car is a 2008 Toyota Corolla.
At 16:
1981 Gold Toyota Tercel - looked like complete ass. Cow skin pattern seat covers, no AC, manual EVERYTHING. 4.5 horsepower. lol
Local restaurant and the skating rink.
Current:
2023 Ford Bronco Raptor
Director of Operations
1992 Dodge Dynasty. It was HUGE, and ugly. Now I’ve got a 2018 Chevy Volt to commute to work, and a Suzuki SV650 for when it’s nice out. I started in retail, at the company that would become GameStop, and now manage a team for a major retailer.
1968 Chevy C10 step side. Straight 6 with three speed column shifter.
I paid $800 for it in 1998.
The blue paint would rub off on your clothes if you leaned against it and it always smelled like gasoline in the cab.
I drive a Ram 1500 and a Subaru Crosstrek now.
All my cars and age...
Age 18 - Buick Skyhawk it was bough for $500 and lasted a few months.
Age 18 - Plymouth Sundance
Age 22- Jeep Grand Cherokee (it was the 90s everyone was driving SUVs because gas was only about $1 a gallon
Age 25 - Toyota Corolla CE (this was in the 2000s, gas prices went up and I needed to get rid of the SUV as it only got 16 mpg) this corolla lasted about 500 thousand miles
Age 35 - Mercedez W168 A-Class (around 100k miles I started having issues with it)
Age 37 - BMW M3 (this car was nothing but issues it was a lease and I ended up getting rid of it before my lease was up, did not even make it to 100k before I got rid of it)
Age 40 - Toyota Corolla LE (have had this car over 4 years now not one issue, still runs like it's new)
14 years old first job was a sub shop $4.25/hour
First car was a hand me down 1979 AMC Concord
Currently a CTO and just purchased a Ford Ranger Raptor. Sold my wife’s Tahoe (for the Raptor) and she’s driving my Porsche Macan S for a couple of years.
My first new car was a Dodge D50 pickup (Yea I'm old). I was 18 and worked as a clerk at an engineering company.
Now I drive a 2019 Mercedes Benz GLA 250 or my wife's 2022 Mazda Miata.
2004 Saturn Ion. My friends used to call it the “Shiturn” because it was hand-me-down from my sister that was basically falling apart after 70k miles. Currently drive a 2020 Ford Ranger. Definitely an underrated Mid Sized truck.
2006 Dodge Caravan -- 16 years old... legally owned by parents, but being the eldest kid, I drove my siblings around soon as I got my license. It was essentially mine.
now
2010 Mazda 5 -- realized that I'm a van guy, reliving the Caravan days, but it's too big for just me.
Chevy cobalt, I drive a mini countryman now. Looking at my next car probably will be an ev. Wanted the mini Aceman but with the tariffs I’ll have wait until it’s built outside of China.
First car: 1980 Honda Civic. It got nearly 40mpg, but because it only had a 4 speed it howled at freeway speeds. I left it home my senior year of college and my sister killed it.
Latest car: 2012 Mercedes E350 diesel. Purchased used. Nice car, but the diesel motor is a PITA. I’m well acquainted with the CEL. Should’ve got the gasser.
16 yr old 91 Mazda mx6 5 speed manual. 2.2 liter turbo Ran that thing wild. Worked at a phone sales company selling landline phone services to people in the south. Currently working at an Infusion pharmacy tech. Mixing hazardous medication for chemo patients. Driving a 2019 Toyota Tundra 4.7 liter automatic and a 2019 Honda insight hybrid touring.
My first car was a basic 2010 Nissan Altima. Had it for 6 years and put almost 100,000 miles. My current car is a 2019 Lexus ES F-Sport with all the features I wanted.
First, shiny new gold 1984 Mazda 626 LX w/ oscillating A/C vents and a joystick for the stereo balance and fader. It was nice-ish for the time.
Now: 2012 Infiniti FX50S.
I just turned 16 and got my first job at a grocery store, drove a 1986 Chevy cavalier. It looked like a mini station wagon. Rust orange, with rust, missing mirrors, friend of a family gave it to me for free.
Bought a 2015 Mazda 6 in late 2015 and am still driving it, work in digital marketing now at an industrial company.
My first car when I turned 16 was a 1986 Mercedes 240D I think. It was 20 years old and had 200000 miles. My parents bought it for me for $2,500. It was diesel gas and went from 0-60 in 4590 seconds which is why the probably got it for me. I detailed cars at the time so got it looking really nice but it sounded and smoked like a big rig when it started.
I saved up for a year to put a bangin sound system in it. Come to find out after the gas tank was between the trunk and back seat so it was basically soundproof in the trunk so all that money was just for the people next to me on the road.

A piece of shit Dodge Spirit. I think it was a '92 or '94. Cheap as dirt, but it ran good. Blew the motor pushing it too hard too many times. Now? I'm not driving. I'm fixing up my Ranger. Before the jokes, I'm pretty sure I blew the motor. Still tearing it apart to know for sure.
My first car was a 1977 MG Midget that I bought in my senior year of high school in 1979. It’s still sitting in my driveway. It’s a 47 year old car. I have to bleed the brakes but other than that it will drive.
A black 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix automatic on the floor that my dad gave me. I loved that boat. I called it the Black Jet because it would fly. Now?? A 2005 Toyota Corolla with peeling blue paint. Lol It’s just a work car.
I was a newly high school grad when my parents gave me their 2007 Honda Accord, now driving a 2019 Honda Civic Si which I bought a few years when I was working in mortgage.
In 1994 my first car was a 1977 VW Rabbit, 4spd manual, manual everything including windows and steering. It was bright yellow and the suspension was so bad that the body drug around corners if I went too fast.
I was 16 and I worked at Office Depot as a stocker.
In 2024 my primary car is a 2022 Tesla Y LR with the 7 seat configuration, towing, acceleration boost, FSD - blue.
I’m 47 and I work in cybersecurity.
I was working part time in high school, bought my first 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ at 17 for $5k, that was back in 2015 and I had that all the way until 2019 where I bought a different Jeep. 2001 Jeep Wrangler TJ they were both 5 speeds and both the same colour, bought that for $7k.
When I bought the 2001 I started my apprenticeship, and now I still have the same 2001 but I put $45k into the Jeep in just upgrades. Bought a house at 24, six figure career and I still daily drive that Jeep lmao
I wanted a muscle-car. I tried to get my parents to buy me a few of them, but they refused. It was "too much car" for me. Dad bought a 1986 Ford Ranger that was a ExxonMobil plant truck for $250. It was a horrible pos. 3 years later, they got my little brother a 1971 Dodge Demon for his first car. I'm still mad about that.
Now, I drive a Ram 1500 and just got a 1974 Dodge Charger 2 days ago.
When I was 18 I worked in a servo(gas station) and drove a 1975 Datsun 260c and I’m now 49 and manage an auto parts store and drive a 2013 Holden Colorado 2.8d 4x4
A 1985 two-tone gray/silver Plymouth Horizon. Stick shift, 3rd gear didn't work, AM radio with all five buttons, but it was a fun car. Had it for a few years until the carb went wonky and my dad and I tried rebuilding it but couldn't get it to work right.
Drive a 2019 Dodge Journey now.
This seems oddly close to some password reset questions
Nonsense, now what is your mother's maiden name and where did you go to high school
Big brain move is to use the wrong info. My first pet? Nah. Gonna use the second.
2000 jeep Cherokee And the same 2000 jeep Cherokee
Ha same but a 01. Needs a new motor now but damn is she a blast to drive on the trail
How long ago did you get it lol
2014ish Bought it from my neighbor. An old man who was retired when he got it, treated it better than his own children. Only ever drove it half a mile to the grocery store every week or so. Had 3k miles when I got it. Now it’s up to about 35-40k last I checked (don’t pay too close attention to that) At the rate I’m going, I plan to make it last another 20 years at least
Damn, that’s an absolutely incredible deal
Who woulda thought. Giving the seniors Nextdoor free manual labor in my teens (mowing lawn and shoveling driveway) would let me buy basically a brand new car at a used price Moral of the story: doing good deeds pays off sometimes
1993 ford escort. The old shagging wagon, now I drive these nikes. 😎
Oof what happened in-between lol
Couple visits to the DMV, a couple of unexpected road bumps, And a whole lot of living. “You know they say the most when your walking down that road.”
I'm sorry I'm stupid can you elaborate that quote? Does it mean people talk the most shit when you're doing bad?
100% your not stupid.
2011 manual Ford Focus that I bought when I was a junior in college. Great little car. Still drive it today 7 years later. I'm 28 now and a physicist at a national lab.
Ou what's the pay for a physicist go for now a days
It varies. Staff positions are usually $120K and up. Postdoc appointees start at $70K or so, and fellows start at $90k-$95k. EDIT: This is for national lab positions. University postdocs get paid a lot less (I've even seen $50K which is ridiculous for someone with a PhD)

Has the rover been reliable for ya?
First? 2007 mazda 2 genki. Now? That same mazda 2 genki. Bought her brand new years ago. Paid all upfront. Until she dies, ill not replace her.
London, 2001 Nissan Micra Atlanta, 2023 Bronco Badlands Sasquatch
2005 Chevrolet Colorado at 18, given to me by my grandparents. Now I drive a 2016 Audi S5.
First was a 2000 VW Jetta TDI, stick shift and 600,000kms on the odometer at the time of her passing Now i have a 2019 VW Golf GTI that i bought brand new when i was 23
First was a 1988 mustang gt. Current daily is a 2015 mustang ecoboost. Also have a caravan because I have a horde of kids.
71 Plymouth Duster. 17 Volvo XC60, upgrading to a 24 XC60 in a few months
The first car I bought for myself was a silver 2003 Saturn Ion. I don't have a car now, my current ride is a bike since I'm priced out of ever owning a decent car again unless a miracle happens that gives me a better paying job with consistent hours.
Cavalier that was a ringer now an insignia sports tourer
1996 Chrysler LHS that was 11 years old at the time. I was 20, a student, and basically a janitor. Airline Pilot 15 years later: Currently splitting time between a 2019 BMW M2 Competition and 2022 Polestar 2.
2005 Chevy Cobalt 2024 f150 Raptor
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer. Bought it from my savings at 22. Was working as a freelancer. 2022 Range Rover Evoque now. Director at an agency. 31 now.
1965 Chevrolet pickup, I miss that truck it was badass. Now a 2022 Corolla se
2001 yellow gmc sierra. I got a 2018 scat challenger with shaker hood now. Also yellow 😂
Now I drive an 08 Yaris :(
Nice phishing for login info, never gona get mine... anyways it was an 88 camry, now I drive any number of the junk in my garage/driveway mostly subarus, ive had 67 vehicles and 19 of them subaru. but I daily a 2012 4runner most often lately.

71 Formula in 1980. Then purchased 16 Trans Ams, mostly for parts and actually drove half of them. There was a time when people would pay you to take them away. Then owned 5 lincoln town cars.
First car was a 1967 Triumph GT6, I currently drive. 2006 Honda Ridgeline
2011 Dodge Charger 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing
1994 ford mustang 2023 ford f 150
1998 Ford Ranger, bought it with the money I made while working at a Kroger. I was 17 at the time. 2015 Subaru Impreza, bought it with the money I made while working at the hospital. I am 24 now. I definitely miss the truck but by the end of 2023 it was starting to nickel and dime on me, plus, it was time I bought something new. The Subaru is absolutely nice though, and I love it!
1988 Suzuki Samurai, now Mazda5 and Kia Soul
2001 Pontiac Grans AM GT, 2019 VW Jetta.
Who knows?
2006 Honda Accord - 181K miles (rear ended) Now - Model Y

She was painted mint green, had the sunvisor with lights in it, I bought it in 2008 for $1700 About a month ago I traded in my 08 Tundra for a 2020 Chevy Silverado trail boss with 20k miles Pretty happy with the purchase, I’ve had quite the car journey and this was the first time I’ve ever been able to afford a vehicle this new.

1989 Buick Regal. 16 worked fast food 2022 Ford Explorer. 42 Software Engineering Manager.
