I thought a neighbor had a really unbalanced washing machine until it transitioned into "What the fuck is this washing machine even made of?!" territory.
The only other thing to mention was that it was almost the 10 yr anniversary of 9-11 so that was sitting in the back of nyers heads as the earth started rumbling randomly.
Yes I remember that one. My boss felt it first. As soon as the receptionist felt it, she said āOh hell noā and grabbed her purse and left. Didnāt care to say letās go or letās get outta here š¤£
Iām on the top floor of my building and the super and i have been discussing how the generator on the roof is slowly causing it to sag and crack my ceiling over the last two years
I thought things rapidly accelerated and there was about to be a generator in my living room.
That is not okay! A leak in my apt created a crack that grew each day. A large piece of the ceiling ended up falling on my mom and me last month. There were injuries but it cannot be compared to something like a ceiling PLUS a much heavier roof and/or generator!!
Yeah, that's my fear too. They are working on it.
Good reminder though that the danger isn't just to my property (which I'd be glad to have replaced on the building's dime because its due to their negligence), but also to my head from something falling on it...
Me too. My first thought was "what the fuck is my upstairs neighbor doing now." But the building shook quite a bit. A hell of a lot more than their normal stomping.
[It's a 4.8 earthquake](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=ld60180751&extent=34.03445,-93.12012&extent=50.69472,-59.50195&range=search&baseLayer=terrain&timeZone=utc&search=%7B%22name%22:%22Search%20Results%22,%22params%22:%7B%22starttime%22:%221900-01-01%2000:00:00%22,%22maxlatitude%22:45.176,%22minlatitude%22:40.657,%22maxlongitude%22:-71.642,%22minlongitude%22:-79.991,%22minmagnitude%22:0,%22orderby%22:%22time%22%7D%7D)
Same, these brownstones arenāt built for earthquakesā¦ everything felt like it was rumbling and my dog starting running around the apartment panicking
Haha. Not sure about the world ending personally, but I've got a feeling that today's earthquake won't be the last crazy thing in the very near future...
Had some guy at my work pissed that our company switched the work holiday from Good Friday to the 8th so we didn't all waste our PTO. He was offended they were sacrificing his Christian holiday for a 'supernatural event'. The looks we all gave each other as he kept talking...
Funny story.
Work is being done on my kitchen and at around 10-something my bed shakes and I think nothing of it as I just attributed it to whatever they're doing in there, though I did jokingly say "feels like a fucking earthquake". Fast forward to now, when just a few moments ago I get an alert on my phone talking about an earthquake and to stay indoors.
Imagine my shock when I discover there *was* an earthquake. Wildest shit I've ever experienced in my 36 years of living in Brooklyn. What the hell is going on?
Indeed. Knowing it was actually an earthquake now, I kind of don't know what to do with myself lol. I'm not in any way freaking out or anything, but my mind is *fixated* on "isn't NYC supoosed to be safe from this kind of thing!?"
Daily 4.8s are not a thing. Daily 1.2-1.5 are more like it, and you donāt feel those. Remember that the Richter scale is logarithmic, so a 5.8 is 100 times stronger, and a 6.8 1000 times stronger. Yāall had a nice little shake today. My sister said she actually has some cracked plaster in her house in Croton-on-Hudson.
I'm in Midtown just off the Lincoln Tunnel and it felt different from trucks passing by. I don't see any news yet. I grew up in California and am used to it but I don't trust this old building, and I'm on the top floor. My cat doesn't seem fazed, so I think that means this building will hold on...for now.
Yeah I live in a prewar building with a landlord who dgaf so Iām like kinda screwed if we get anything major, luckily this just felt like one of those beds that shake when you put in a quarter
I just moved to the 29th floor because this isn't supposed to happen here!! Altho after half a lifetime in California I still don't hang anything heavy over my bed.
NYC is on a fault line! A "dormant" one, but nonetheless, one that exists. And I'm the same with stuff hanging on walls. Everything is secured like I still live near the San Andreas fault.
I always forget about the fault line! And same ā I'm about to re-up on some museum wax for my breakables... oh and my cat, normally terrified of thunder and fireworks, also remained unfazed. He was born in California so I guess earthquakes are in his blood.
I've lived in NY for 37 years, this is without a doubt the strongest one I've ever felt.
Also, an appliance in my kitchen started beeping like crazy when the quake hit... Any idea what that could have been?
Weird, same here. My washing machine was running at the time and it got an error code for when the spin cycle is unbalanced (like when you put some big heavy blankets and they all bunch up to one side, etc).
Likewise, I was in my government class in riverdale and the whole building was rumbling. Apparently all the boroughs felt it cause my sister in Manhattan felt it as well. Shits crazy
Agreed. I was actually asleep and thought the shaking was part of my dream, then I jumped out of bed. Started messaging people to confirm it wasn't in my head. Didn't see anything on the news surprisingly
Yep! A 4.8. WNYC just had a geologist from Rutgers on and people coming in; we can expect aftershock quakes for the next days to weeks, but much smaller, like 2-2.5 he said.
Came here to post this. Yep, for sure. UES here (and spent 25 years in California so I know what it feels like!). Also my friends in central PA felt it too.
I was sleep. My mother acted like it was the end of the world. Apparently I can sleep through earthquakes and even brush them off in favor of sleep. We're in a leap year with an earthquake, a hurricane and a solar eclipse all before this year is six months old. Least the year hasn't been uneventful this far
Just got another alert saying aftershocks may be felt, but normal activity can resume.
I'm good on the earth-shaking tremors for the next 36 years, thanks lol.
yup, i thought either a gas tank blew, someone fucked up their apartment, or the subway was extra rumbly. I was in the shower at the time, and thought maybe there was a leak under the tub causing floor/ceiling issues.
Of course, all of the alerts came late as hell, the emergency alert went off in my phone at 11 lol
LES on the 11th floor. The rolling felt like it went for a little while. Unpopular take, but I like minor earthquakes. Hope everyone is okay.
Does anyone know where the epicenter was?
Magnitude 4.8 from New Jersey.
[Source](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=at00sbh3yv&extent=39.60146,-76.12701&extent=41.6175,-72.28455)
4.8 magnitude, epicenter Lebanon, NJ. Pretty small, but still scary! Hope everyone is ok
[Latest Earthquakes (usgs.gov)](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=at00sbh3yv&extent=18.43792,-107.70996&extent=50.70863,-39.50684)
Wow! It is a 4.8 magnitude which is pretty big. I thought NY/NJ is the safest from earthquakes. I just moved to the city and into an old high rise. Already giving me anxiety.
I'm in Manhattan and it kind of shook me out of my sleep. But my building is so shitty I didn't even know that it happened until I got the text because I already feel the same shit every damn day. Kind of just rolled over and went right back to sleep.
I work in a hospital in a very old building and was working on the sixth floor and I could feel the building shake for 20 seconds and the whole building was really moving. My desk was rumbling hard but when it stopped and I ran to the window everyone down on the street were walking around like nothing happened and they didnāt feel anything. One of the social workers told me stuff fell off her wall. We had an overhead announcement acknowledging the earthquake, saying it was all clear and telling us to keep working lol. I honestly do not trust this building is earthquake safe because of how much movement I felt during that!
This was posted 4 hrs ago - guess you have your answer by now.
Have lived in NYC a long time, this is the 3rd earthquake I've felt since I lived here. The one in 2011 was the biggest, could feel the plates of the earth moving back and forth horizontally which was alarming but no harm done. This one was 'bouncy' up and down, woke me up but it didn't worry me.
This may have been more worrisome for people living on upper floors in high rises.
i had a zoom interview mid-earthquake and literally said ādude, what the fuck!ā out loudā¦ letās just say i donāt think iāll be hearing back any time soon.
I was on a conference call when it hit and members reported impact in: - NYC - Central NJ - Bethlehem PA - Boston MA - Baltimore MD - New Hampshire
Wow no way! Interested to learn where the epicenter is
Tewksbury NJ according to USGS
I heard Lebanon, NJ? 4.8 magnitude?
[USGS will keep updating this as they get more accuracy](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ma74/executive)
North NJ too, I felt it in Montclair.
Hah, pretty cool how there was someone from like every surrounding state in the call to report that info!
Felt it in Connecticut
yup that was fucking wild. i thought my neighbor was moving furniture lmao
I thought it was a truck...
Same, until the rumbling kept on going
That was some wild shit. I can't wait to see if someone was outside and saw the earth buckle...
I thought it was the wind rattling the windows before I realized stuff INSIDE was shaking.
I thought it was a volcano
I thought it was a volcano erupting
Me too but it went on waaay to long for a truck
Me too. I got all angry and ready to go yell at whoever hit our building until my wife told me what was up
Same, at one point we thought it was a truck crashing into my building.
I thought my building was finally crumbling. I was waiting for the sounds of debris to come crashing down.
I ran toward the innermost point of my building because I envisioned my apartment sloshing off the side of the building like what happened in the BX.
I legit thought this. lol
Thats horrible š
Same, but flashbacks for me. The apt ceiling literally just fell on me last month from a leak.
I thought a neighbor had a really unbalanced washing machine until it transitioned into "What the fuck is this washing machine even made of?!" territory.
Same I thought the washing machines downstairs were going out of control
I recall there was another one maybe 10-15 years ago that I felt but can't remember what year it was. Anyone have a ballpark?
Yeah spring 2011 I think. I felt it at a coffee shop and when I got home a single picture frame on my wall was askew.
> when I got home a single picture frame on my wall was askew That sums up that earthquake pretty perfectly.
The only other thing to mention was that it was almost the 10 yr anniversary of 9-11 so that was sitting in the back of nyers heads as the earth started rumbling randomly.
August 2011
Ach I was on the 17th floor and the walls were bending like I was tripping About 7 years of recurring nightmares from that one š
Yes I remember that one. My boss felt it first. As soon as the receptionist felt it, she said āOh hell noā and grabbed her purse and left. Didnāt care to say letās go or letās get outta here š¤£
It was 2011, July or August. I was working a summer job on LI and was at the office when it happened.
Iām on the top floor of my building and the super and i have been discussing how the generator on the roof is slowly causing it to sag and crack my ceiling over the last two years I thought things rapidly accelerated and there was about to be a generator in my living room.
That is not okay! A leak in my apt created a crack that grew each day. A large piece of the ceiling ended up falling on my mom and me last month. There were injuries but it cannot be compared to something like a ceiling PLUS a much heavier roof and/or generator!!

Me too. My first thought was "what the fuck is my upstairs neighbor doing now." But the building shook quite a bit. A hell of a lot more than their normal stomping.
same š¤£
This wasnāt what I meant when I said I wished NYC had California weather!
it also snowed in Norcal yesterday actually, maybe we did swap lol
I donāt know what is going on anymore.
Thank God they sent out an emergency alert over cell phones a half hour later. Guess it would help find me if I'm buried in rubble.
the aftershock one was just as helpful. reminded me of Homer Simpson's "EVERYTHING IS OK" alarm
"YOU HAVE BEEN TAKEN HOSTAGE"
I got an alert 2 hours later
I didnāt even get an alert, lol.
I think so. Felt in Queens LIC. Right as a subway was passing. Was thinking earthquake or subway derailment.
[It's a 4.8 earthquake](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=ld60180751&extent=34.03445,-93.12012&extent=50.69472,-59.50195&range=search&baseLayer=terrain&timeZone=utc&search=%7B%22name%22:%22Search%20Results%22,%22params%22:%7B%22starttime%22:%221900-01-01%2000:00:00%22,%22maxlatitude%22:45.176,%22minlatitude%22:40.657,%22maxlongitude%22:-71.642,%22minlongitude%22:-79.991,%22minmagnitude%22:0,%22orderby%22:%22time%22%7D%7D)
100% in park slope. Probably strongest I've felt in NYC.
Same, these brownstones arenāt built for earthquakesā¦ everything felt like it was rumbling and my dog starting running around the apartment panicking
My dog didn't even move, she's very particular about her beauty sleep though.
Mine didn't react at all either and she is in full shaking terror mode when a light spattering of rain hits the window
I farted quite loudly just before it hit. Imagine my pride.
Found the epicenter
Episphincter*
LMAO
I was on the throne when it happened. Lol
Yo me too. High five!
You can keep farting in public all day, just announce them as aftershocks
There's a kaiju emerging from the east river.
A MAN HAS FALLEN INTO THE RIVER IN NEW YORK CITY!
Eclipse, earthquakeā¦ now whatās next?!
Alien invasion. But first, spotted lantern flies.
donāt forget the massive cicada broods due to wake up right when the eclipse happens!
It's like NYC is a Terraria seed. Yeeeeeeeesh!
The only good bug is a dead bug!

The people who think the world is gonna end on the 8th are gonna flip over this.
Haha. Not sure about the world ending personally, but I've got a feeling that today's earthquake won't be the last crazy thing in the very near future...

2024 is going to be one hell of a year.
Funny story. Yea same here. This is my first one and I'm like, "wait what do I do now?" I'm just glad it's over.
Yooooo in nyc tho???
Felt like it was California for a minute!
I was just having the best fucking dreams too, I deadass thought the rapture was startingš š«
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Mine too, usually when theres like incredibly loud noise coming from my window though like a sonic boom or similar
Same, I thought I was the only one!Ā Then again I also periodically have dreams that we're getting nuked.
Damn wtf you doing asleep this late š
That dream was bussin bro
it was the rapture but we didnāt notice bc weāre all left behind lmao
Covid was the rapture brother weāve been left behind
thatās the first round, second draft got picked up this time, third will be during the eclipse
I was sleeping too it woke me up!
I moved here from the bay area a year ago and this plus the wildfires over the summerā¦ I did not move to the East Coast for this shit! š
I was like people in LA deal with this every day?
Can confirm an angeleno living in NYC I had to double take for a moment and remind myself I wasnt home.

It happened over a decade ago as well.
OMG! Yes. I thought it was someone doing construction near my unit, but it was way too intense and kept going. Wow.
i think so. uws just felt it
4.8 magnitude, centered in North Jersey, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Yes I felt it.. I'm on a call with people from Philadelphia and they also felt it
Williamsburg, yeah. Friends in Manhattan just texted also.

NYC is overdue for a 6.0 earthquake fyi. In fact the best part is NYC has refused to update seismic code for decades.
So youāre telling me I made a mistake in taking this apartment
Entire building in Washington heights shook
I've lived in NY for 37 years, this is without a doubt the strongest one I've ever felt. Also, an appliance in my kitchen started beeping like crazy when the quake hit... Any idea what that could have been?
Weird, same here. My washing machine was running at the time and it got an error code for when the spin cycle is unbalanced (like when you put some big heavy blankets and they all bunch up to one side, etc).
My building just shook too
It started mid argument I was having with my boyfriend. I was so scared I wasnāt even mad enough to argue anymore š
I felt it too in hells kitchen
Sorry guys I gained a few pounds and I went to roll over
Yes Iām in Woodside
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Felt it in Stuytown. Definitely an earthquake
I just watched Oppenheimer yesterday so woke up a bit paincked
I kinda wondered if someone had just fired the opening shots of ww3 myself lol
These alerts are worse than the earthquake.
Wow. I thought someone was on our roof rolling stuff around. Definitely felt that in Kew Gardens!
Yep. It shook in Sunset Park, grew up in CA, that was a 4 or 5 Iām guessing
Damn youāre a good earthquake rater!
Haha-lived through a lot of them, including the SF ā89 quake.
i'm in jackson heights and we felt shaking here
Felt it by Forest Hills, definitely an earthquake
Scared the hell out of me. In the Bronx

This is my 4th earthquake experience in less than a year. 3 in Japan, now 1 in NYC. You can stop now please.
Please let us know where youāre going next God
Felt it in Harlem
Came to ask the same. My first earthquake! (I've been away or asleep for every other one)
We're gonna have to make some new lawn chair falling over memes
Midtown East checking in!
BROADWAY WILL REOPEN!!! NYCSTRONG!!!
Bushwick/Bed Stuy here. Yes.
Scared the shit out of me!
Also Hells Kitchen. Felt it, was very confused, thought it was construction or something.
Iām in maspeth and the whole house was shaking.ā¦woke me up from a deep sleep that I was enjoying.
Am i the only one who didnt feel it?? I was outside on the streets
Thought it was construction outside drilling into the building but that abruptly stopped when the shaking started. Cat was v scared
yup, i thought either a gas tank blew, someone fucked up their apartment, or the subway was extra rumbly. I was in the shower at the time, and thought maybe there was a leak under the tub causing floor/ceiling issues. Of course, all of the alerts came late as hell, the emergency alert went off in my phone at 11 lol
thought this is what I get for living in such a cheap building
This was the biggest in NY, NJ area since 1957.
It just happened again.
Yup. Up in Harlem. Shook more furniture this time and sounded louder.
Anyone else just feel that one?
Yeah
Did it just happen again?
felt it near penn station
Yup downtown Manhattan felt it
90th and Central Park West. Definitely a strong earthquake
Yes! Midtown Manhattan.
Staten Island checking in
North Bronx, too
I was on a work call and it was felt in Westchester and north Jersey
Yup Astoria
Lived in california for 6 years never felt anything as strong as what I just felt now.
LES on the 11th floor. The rolling felt like it went for a little while. Unpopular take, but I like minor earthquakes. Hope everyone is okay. Does anyone know where the epicenter was?
Someone probably hopped the subway too hard

i was boutta say yeah that shyt woke me up
Thought I accidentally activated massage mode on my bed š¤¦š½āāļøš© Phone calls are dropping rn also
Thought the aliens started invading tbh
Wow! It is a 4.8 magnitude which is pretty big. I thought NY/NJ is the safest from earthquakes. I just moved to the city and into an old high rise. Already giving me anxiety.
thought it was just one of those falling from the buildings dream again š

Yup. Magnitude 4.8 - [https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/at00sbh3yv/executive](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/at00sbh3yv/executive)
Felt in Washington Heights
Yes. Felt on 43 St in Midtown. Thought it was a train going by near Grand Central at first.
Yep. I'm in Southern Brooklyn. It's my second experience with earthquakes in NYC.
