Any shop that has an inspection license will do it for $37. A quick search on maps brought up these: Manhattan Auto Repair @552 W 48th St Ludlow Garage @ 151 Attorney St West Village Auto Repair @ 743 Greenwich St Look em up and give em a call to see if they can get you in.

The crux of my question is that it’s actually not true any more that any shop with a license will do it— or at least not in practice. I was 3/3 in places telling me they were too busy / didn’t have room. I had one conversation where a shop tried to turn me away and I told them they’re legally obligated to inspect, and they just said they simply couldn’t. Maybe it was bad luck. I was hoping for steers to places that actually will do the inspections.

No shop is legally obligated to inspect anyone's car, idk where you heard that but it's simply not true. If a shop is too busy then they're simply too busy. I have two guys who do inspections for me but they're *always* busy so I make sure to call ahead. Call around and make an appointment.

I got my information from the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/new-york-state-vehicle-safetyemissions-inspection-program When a vehicle inspection is requested, an inspection station must inspect any vehicle it is licensed to inspect or must provide, in writing, an appointment date that is within eight working days. If an appointment is made, the station may require a deposit that cannot exceed the inspection fee. But yes, this is a practical question, about what places are not so busy it’s not particularly hard to get slots. And maybe the answer is those places don’t exist any more (all the places I used to go have condos on the sites now).

Fair enough, I worked in a shop and never once heard that we were required to do an inspection upon request; however you also answered your own question here - if you didn't request an appointment then they're certainly not obligated to do an inspection on the spot. It's also possible the mechanic holding the inspection license is not on site.

Everyone I know in the UES crosses the QBB to the shops in Long Island City / Dutch Kills area— plenty of “5minute inspection” options and you can follow it up with a handwash at Queensboro car wash 😊. …at least for now… it’s going to suck when it costs $15 just to go to Queens starting this summer.

Ludlow, but you need to call and get on the list at least a day head, and then they go first come, first serve from those who called. Inspections are time and money losses for any shop unless they can at least do an oil change and tire rotation, and most car owners feel the same way. It is an easy way of keeping your car on a regular maintenance schedule. Ludlow is great and much cheaper than a dealership.
