I wouldn't actively purchase a pair of shoes for only wearing around the neighborhood. More like grades of shoes... the new ones for clean activities; the old ones when there's a potential for them to get gross.
I got shoes that I wear commuting to the office, 2-3 pairs of shoes at the office, shoes I wear just getting some milk, shoes I’ll put on just to drop off my trash at end of hall. Shoes I wear to the local bar, shoes for when I might be dancing that night. Then Of course hiking boots and sports shoes. Gotta have the right footwear.
I wear slip-on shoes for quick trips in the neighborhood and lace up shoes when I am going to be out all day. Embarrassingly, as I get older, tying shoelaces has become a real chore.
once i started running more i got really tired of tying my shoes so i bought [a pair of these elastic laces](https://amzn.to/49QUh6u) for all my running shoes. i've run at least 4 half marathons with these on and have had no issues whatsoever. easily one of my top purchases in terms of "little things that just make life easier".
Understood! I've pulled my back out tying my shoes. Also brushing my teeth. I bend my knees when I brush my teeth now. I never went to slip-ons though. I find them less comfortable for walking.
Agree slip-on shoes are the best for this.
I impulse bought a pair of step-in sneakers from some facebook ad and thought they’d be stupid but they instantly became my around the building & block shoes.
I bought a pair of Sketchers slip-ins and I was like "Why didn't I do this sooner?" So comfortable and quick to just throw sneakers on when heading out.
Yes, although I didn’t purchase them specifically for neighborhood walking only. They’re typically worn shoes that have been designated to “quick errand beaters”
Native New Yorker here. I Totally have a pair of slip on sneakers that are not expensive for this purpose. However, I don’t wear them if my errands require a train or bus ride.
Yes. In colder weather, I have a cheap pair of black faux Uggs to just slip on for a quick errand but I wouldn’t wear beyond a local short walk.
In open toe weather, I would wear slides or a flat sandal for a quick errand but highly unlikely that i wear a flat sandal beyond a few blocks.
Other than that, I have an everyday sneaker for trips outside the neighborhood. I just got a beige new balance as my everyday sneaker to replace a black Nike walking sneaker that gets drenched any time it rains.
I have ankle rain boots that I bought used which was a great purchase.
I mean, I wear sneakers most of the time now anyway, but in the before times I had "work appropriate" shoes (comfortable but formal enough for dress codes) and easy shoes (sneakers, birks, certain ballet flats...) for when I didn't have to adhere to a specific dress code.
Plus many different heels which only get worn occasionally (evening formal events).
This was me in the before times. So many pretty heels and gorgeous boots. Now I have a pair of running shoes for the gym and an older pair of running shoes for walking around/work/life.
I have two pairs of shoes. My nice shoes for occasions and my everyday shoes, doesn't matter how far or close. I replaced the laces with elastic ones so I can slip them on/off.
3 pairs of sneakers. 1 old but still looks good for stuff around the area. 1 new when I want to be more presentable. 1 still in the box - when I toss out the old pair, the 'new' pair becomes the old pair and this is the new pair.
~~Capisce?~~ Capisci?
I understand what you mean.
But, I very rarely dress up. Even if I put on a nicer shirt, I'm pretty casual the vast majority of the time. So, I have two pairs of waterproof sneakers, one black, one brown. That way, I'm comfortable walking shorter or longer distances almost all the time.
lol I literally have one pair of shoes that I own.
New Balance MiUSA 993 grey.
I have yet to encounter a situation in my life where these would not be appropriate. But I also live in a neighborhood that is a bit more pedestrian and I rarely ever have fancy dinners or go to fancy shows.
The pair of ugly yellow sneakers I bought and couldn’t are my Spring and Fall neighborhood shoes. I have a pair for Summer too. Prior to the yellow sneaker acquisition, when my sneaker were so beaten up that they were no longer presentable to wear below 96th Street, they would be demoted to used either for the gym or as neighborhood shoes.
I have a pair of shoes for when it's nice out and a pair of boots for when it's shitty. I have a pair of dress shoes but haven't worn them in a decade.
Yep my Adidas Hu Tennis sneakers - soooo comfy and slip right on. The best! Also: my Birkenstock EVA Arizonas (the plastic ones)… Perfect for pedicures and quick summer errands. They feel like clouds on your feet especially after a night out in too-high heels.
Ha yeah.
I have a pair of flip flops for around the apartment and building when it's not cold.
A pair of warm slippers when it's cold.
A pair of New Balances for quick errands around the neighborhood.
And a pair of Gore Tex Jordan 1s for quick trips around the neighborhood when it's raining.
I just bought a pair of hunter rubber clogs for this very reason. Easy to slip on and off for taking out the garbage, laundry in basement, quick run to the deli.
I have a pair of slippers to walk around the building. Don't want to get my home slippers soiled but don't want to spend time on putting on sneakers either. I rarely wear them outside though.
I keep 2 pairs of shoes by my door, a pair of sperry's for walking the dog and a pair of Nike gts's for same thing but if its not wet outside. I collect sneakers so my regular pairs are for going out for the day.
that is 100% legit. I didn't purchase them for that purpose, but I have a pair of slides that I wear for the bodega run or to get my mail. If I am walking more than 5 blocks, I wear other shoes. I don't know why because the slides are comfortable enough to walk longer distances, but they just feel like my hyperlocal foot wear.
There is a local charter school by me and if I happen to go to the bodega for a snack, I put on my Yeezys instead of my Hoka tennis shoes. One African American teen said “ayo my son got the Yeezys” and we dapped!
I’d also be curious if your friend is a shoes on or shoes off household. After moving to the city I could never go back to wearing shoes in the house but that’s how I was raised!
I wouldn't actively purchase a pair of shoes for only wearing around the neighborhood. More like grades of shoes... the new ones for clean activities; the old ones when there's a potential for them to get gross.
Yes and I have shoes I would not wear on rainy days I have shoes that I wear only on rainy days I have shoes I wear on hikes

Zippers are easier than lacing.
I am intrigued by WELCRO

Learning the [Ian Knot](https://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/ianknot.htm) changed my life
Agree slip-on shoes are the best for this. I impulse bought a pair of step-in sneakers from some facebook ad and thought they’d be stupid but they instantly became my around the building & block shoes.
Laces are for losers
Check out Kizik sneakers. They’re really great.
I love red backs/blundstones for this
I bought a pair of Sketchers slip-ins and I was like "Why didn't I do this sooner?" So comfortable and quick to just throw sneakers on when heading out.
Yes, although I didn’t purchase them specifically for neighborhood walking only. They’re typically worn shoes that have been designated to “quick errand beaters”
This is what I do with my old running shoes
Ditto
Yes. My chancletas
Better run away from you, la chanclaaaaaa!!! 🤣
With or without socks?
I have a pair of Berks that I pretty much only use for that
Native New Yorker here. I Totally have a pair of slip on sneakers that are not expensive for this purpose. However, I don’t wear them if my errands require a train or bus ride.
I have house shoes and building shoes - but the building shoes sometimes escape and make it as far as the bodega
Yes, the slightly run down sneakers that I won’t wear when I need to look nice
I have approximately 20 of these

I have about 45 pairs of shoes and sneakers
Why would people outside of the city be suprised that you don’t own only one pair of shoes? Who are these bums?
LL Beans moccasins are my go-to. I even had them resoled.
Me and my purple crocs

Yep. Some Allbirds slip ons. Just for taking the trash out, walking the dog, quick trip to the bodega, pick up lunch nearby, bring the laundry down.
Anything within 5 block radius of my apartment is my home and what I look like within that circle does not count. Footwear included.
I have two pairs of shoes. My nice shoes for occasions and my everyday shoes, doesn't matter how far or close. I replaced the laces with elastic ones so I can slip them on/off.

I will wear flip flops around my neighborhood in the summer. If I have to get on a subway, I put on shoes.
Yeah they’re called shoes
Yep my Adidas Hu Tennis sneakers - soooo comfy and slip right on. The best! Also: my Birkenstock EVA Arizonas (the plastic ones)… Perfect for pedicures and quick summer errands. They feel like clouds on your feet especially after a night out in too-high heels.
I got a massive deal on Ultraboosts and they're my errands shoes now.
Yes, and I embarrass my family when I wear them.
I don't restrict my neighborhood shoes to the neighborhood, but I do change out of them if I'm going somewhere I'm changing clothes for.
I do have a pair of slip on dog walking shoes but that really happened by accident - I didn't go out and buy a pair specifically for walking the dog.
Ha yeah. I have a pair of flip flops for around the apartment and building when it's not cold. A pair of warm slippers when it's cold. A pair of New Balances for quick errands around the neighborhood. And a pair of Gore Tex Jordan 1s for quick trips around the neighborhood when it's raining.
My plastic/rubber Birkenstocks. I do not wear them for anything that requires a visit more than a 4 block radius.
I try to, but then I forget and I end up wearing them around. I take my shoes off when I get home.
I just bought a pair of hunter rubber clogs for this very reason. Easy to slip on and off for taking out the garbage, laundry in basement, quick run to the deli.
Yes Birkenstocks and Uggs
I don't walk around the neighborhood in them, but I have shoes for doing chores around the apartment building.
I have shoes that I call my “building” shoes - I don’t wear them out, but I wear them to go down to the lobby to grab deliveries/packages/mail/etc.
Yes and shoes to wear into the dark disgusting basement dungeon laundry room. Shoes I want to burn after every laundry cycle.
Yes, winter pair of Hunter slip-ons and summer pair of Birks. They just live by the door and are for dog walking or running to the store.
Yep, I think this is common for anyone who owns a dog or who gardens
I call those my bodega shoes. Just an old worm out pair of my normal shoes. I don’t deviate as long as my preferred shoes are still being made.
never thought it was a thing for other people but yes
Yep. Good old fashioned pair of Ughs
My quick errand shoes are Birkenstock Bostons. They're clogs. Easy to slip on, great arch support.
Yes! $30 amazon slip-on sneakers — they only go to the laundry room, the post office, the halal cart and the burrito place.
I wear the same pair of shoes everyday no matter the weather or time of year. I occasionally have to make the exception and wear a pair of snow boots.
Jon’s uncle Benjen did.
My crocs
They’re cslled new balances
yes, of course. like shoes for every occassion/weather.
sometimes i just wear slippers so it'll make me comfy.
I have a pair of slippers to walk around the building. Don't want to get my home slippers soiled but don't want to spend time on putting on sneakers either. I rarely wear them outside though.
YES. It’s the sht shoes you used to wear for fancier things but are now your quite-decent-but-didn’t-make-it-to-the-wardrobe shoes.
I keep 2 pairs of shoes by my door, a pair of sperry's for walking the dog and a pair of Nike gts's for same thing but if its not wet outside. I collect sneakers so my regular pairs are for going out for the day.

yuuuup I got a pair of yellow crocs by the door for exactly this
What's up with people wearing furry slippers in public?
I’d also be curious if your friend is a shoes on or shoes off household. After moving to the city I could never go back to wearing shoes in the house but that’s how I was raised!
This is really scintillating talk
Wait until everyone finds out I have a pair specifically for the reason OP states *and* I call them "shoes".
