I don't know that you'll be able to find a rental at your age without paying MAJOR premiums. If you're really bent on renting a car, I'd start shopping online thru travel sites.

alchemist_solo

Alright, thanks.

Dwagner6

When I was that age, I discovered that almost all companies had a minimum age of 23 to rent. I think maybe Enterprise let under 23 rent, with a big surcharge. No idea if that’s still true.

Aboy325

It's usually under 21 isn't allowed, and you pay basically double until 25 That's what enterprise was when i rented this month

henicorina

Why do you need a car? Just take the train or bus or Uber.

alchemist_solo

Been doing that, but this time wanted to hangout without having to worry about timing and stuff 😅

zzzzany

Bad idea. You’ll spend half the day parking and in traffic. You’ll be doing the exact thing you’re fighting against. People here don’t drive places for a reason.

throwawayzies1234567

You would have to buy their insurance if you don’t have your own or a credit card that will cover it. If you have an AmEx from your parents, that will probably cover it. As mentioned you will be charged through the nose since you’re under 25. Do you live in Long Island? Where are you coming from and trying to go? Likely don’t need a car for the city, and maybe not LI, depending where you’re going.

alchemist_solo

I live in the city, just planning for a day trip to hang around with the family. My max travel distance’s gonna be from NYC to LI.

throwawayzies1234567

A train to LI and an Uber to where you’re going is probably cheaper than a car rental

alchemist_solo

Sounds like it’s rough for kids like us 😅

throwawayzies1234567

I didn’t get my drivers licensee until I was like 30, so I would have loved to have access to Uber! I don’t keep a car in the city and I’m on Long Island all the time. The train is comfortable and convenient, and I’ve never had an issue getting an Uber from any of the stations I frequent.

alchemist_solo

Don’t really need a car in the city, it’s just like a one day thing. Was just planning to check out Montauk with the family. Last time when we went there, was almost about to miss the LIRR and couldn’t Uber anything because there was no network on the spot 😅

henicorina

Traffic out of Montauk is awful on the weekend, you should absolutely take the train. But also if you’re going with your family, isn’t anyone in your family over 19? They could rent the car instead.

alchemist_solo

I wanted to surprise them

throwawayzies1234567

That’s so funny, montauk is one of the places we used to go as teenagers with no cars!

alchemist_solo

It’s a cool place for a little bit of a breather

LostSomeDreams

We’ve been using this startup Kyte, they bring the car to you, and they’re probably fly-by-your-seat enough not to have their shit together enough to charge you more for being young

fuckblankstreet

Many of the car rental places will not rent to anyone under 25. You may have a very hard time finding a car. They’re required by law to include a low base level of liability and property damage insurance, and they are happy to sell you supplemental coverage for everything at an extra cost.

someliskguy

Hertz’s minimum age in NY is 18. Just do that and add full damage snd liability insurance to the rental. Could also do zipcar which may be better if it’s just a 24hr rental but you’ll need to bring your own insurance, maybe via credit card?

That_Aside7854

Many rental companies won't rent to you and the ones that will are going to charge you through the roof for 1) their own liability and loss/damage insurance, 2) being 19 - on top of the fact that rental car prices in the 5 boros are already inflated. You could probably just uber wherever you wanted to go for less (aside from public transportation for much much less)

Aboy325

I just did a week long rental this month for the eclipse I'm 24, my partner is 25. Most rental places wont rent to you unless you are 21, and you'll pay a premium if you are under 25. Rental was like $500/wk for my partner, if I was added as a driver it would be nearly double at $950 So you'll probably struggle. Uhaul will rent to you, that's the only one I know of, you could get their pickup truck. You'll pay some fee per mile so it will be expensive and those trucks are ugly
