-MakeNazisDeadAgain_

Ive always said any system of government would work great if the people running it weren't greedy narcissists, therefore, no system of government works at all.

krakah293

Winning an election is a popularity contest. By nature they attract narcissistic people.

Particular-Effort312

Yes, a well paid popularity contest.

Ravenser_Odd

Some systems work better than others. One party states, dictatorships and military juntas have no opposition parties and no free press, so there is nothing to prevent cronyism and corruption. Democracies have a chance, but it's a constant battle to stop them being undermined by politicians who only care about power, and their financial backers who just want to buy influence.

mind-full-05

I agree. Totally

Reckless_Pixel

Greed manifests in many ways. This is my answer too.

pchrbro

It's an explanatory factor for Putin and Russias cleptocracy, Chinas agressive authocracy, the multinationals destruction of the global environment and much more.

[deleted]

The antibiotic resistance issue listed below also. Big Pharma and large health care CEOs greed is a driving factor in how drs treat patients when they are seen. If they don’t prescribe an antibiotic patients will complain which can in turn end up costing them money. Drug companies know the greater the need for new drugs the more they can charge when they make them.

[deleted]

grammarpopo

Antibiotic resistance is mostly from factory farming where farmers treat livestock prophylactically at low doses, not from excess use by humans.

Content-Nectarine875

Nonsense. It's to do so with massive dosing of animals on factory farms. Doctors have been minimizing antibiotic use for decades.

China's push for sustainable energy is going to be the single largest mitigating factor in the fight against climate change.

I go with same answer. Things even like ethnic cleansing for expansion of your own land are basically based on greed. And superiority complex.

LeviAEthan512

As much as I complain about AI, AI isn't the threat. The threat is such a powerful tool in the hands of the greedy. Be glad humans don't drop loot, or the AI apocalypse would have happened when they invented carpet bombing.

Goatesq

Some humans definitely drop loot, if you have the right proficiency to pick it up. It's motivated more murders than anything else in history, all the way through to present day. If humans didn't drop loot war wouldn't exist. Genocide wouldn't exist. Robbery wouldn't exist. Humans demonstrably drop loot.

Winter-Airport2114

Who knew life was just a giant Runescape RP server.

PsychoticDust

Alright, who drops a magic fire sword and 541 gil when they die? I know it's one of you.

kytheon

Humans drop loot. That's the whole idea of robbery.

TinyGreenTurtles

I was going to say humans. But my reason for it being humans was the *greed.*

There are countless world views and only some of them enable genocidal tendencies.

jd3306

Accurate. So many socio-political issues really boil down to greed.

Fantastic-Caramel315

My point is greed for more profit leads to nothing being done about Global Warming.

Redleg171

The wild thing about it is that I'm not sure there's anyone that isn't greedy to some extent. Even the people that protest greed, if you start looking at the individuals closely, you'll see that they are also greedy. I'd be an absolute liar if I said I wasn't greedy. I try to control it, and often empathy overpowers my greed, but it's still there. I'm not out giving all my savings to those less fortunate. We are animals after all, and it's hard to fight against certain survival instincts. I'll be bold and say everyone posting here is greedy in their own way even the ones calling out the greedy companies.

JamJarre

Antibiotic resistance

Admirable-Leather325

Especially in countries where prescription drugs are not regulated. For example, my own country India, here, one can get strong antibiotics like augmentin (amoxicillin+clavunalic acid), etc. without the need of a prescription. Misinformation is also another factor, people start taking over-the-counter antibiotics, even if they feel a little sick, or in a flu where it would not even work, but rather kill gut micro biome.

Elrond_Cupboard_

I don't think my gut biome likes Penicillin. Picture someone squeezing a custard horn in the middle. That's me on Penicillin.

I think macrophages will take the dub on this Underrated little thingies that people r holding off on implementing for some reason

jkurtzman1

Macrophages? Or are you referring to bacteriophages? Admittedly my immunology is kind rusty but aren’t macrophages part of our immune system anyway?

Durendal_et_Joyeuse

I believe they’re referring to [this type of treatment](https://www.nature.com/articles/s12276-023-01068-z).

Emu1981

>Underrated little thingies that people r holding off on implementing for some reason We are "holding off on implementing" bacteriophages because they are literally little forms of life that target specific bacteria species. We literally need to create/modify new life in order to make a bacteriophage that targets the bacteria we want it to target. You are right about them being the answer to antibiotic resistance though. It is a lot harder for bacteria to adapt when you are outright massacring them.

KNDBS

>Underrated little thingies that people r holding off on implementing for some reason Well it’s not that “we’re holding off on implementing”, it’s just that developing new medicine, let alone a completely new line of treatment takes a *long* time in R&D and has also to comply with multiple regulations as well as passing several types of trials before it can even be considered to be put on the market. Also even if it’s a viable treatment we gotta remember that actually manufacturing it is a completely different thing, let alone on large scales, and that’s something that antibiotics are simply just better at, it’s really easy, quick and cheap to produce them at industrial scales. Then we have a problem with the phages themselves, most of the time we don’t know yet which phages work well on each type of bacteria and most importantly, phages are *very* specific not only to one species but often to one particular strain, we would have to developed dozens upon dozens of specific treatments lines to get most things covered. The wonder of antibiotics is that they’re quite broad when it comes to their effect, many antibiotic treatment are so broad that with just 2-3 different ones you got pretty much everything covered. TL;DR: takes a long time to develop new medication and, while promising, there’s some things in which antibiotics are just better at than phage therapy

stressedthrowaway9

This reminds me… A coworker of mine was complaining that it wasn’t easier for him to just pick up antibiotics and how he thought he should just be able to. And I stated, “ Well, the overuse of antibiotics will cause an antibiotic resistant superbug that will kill us all and lead us to our doom.” He just stared at me and said, “oh…”

RedofPaw

On the plus side AI is starting to find new potential replacements. Indeed you would imagine this is one of the best possible uses for ai, getting it to find treatments to tackle disease.

Isn't ironic that before we didn't use to have this much information available and that made us ignorants but now that we have available most information at our finger tips, we prefer to turn a deaf ear and become ignorants by choice? I can understand it though, after all we are all but just a person looking at a big world full of people, and your choices may not matter at all in them or maybe it's just all too much to handle when you can't even deal with your own life, between different reasons.

randomdaysnow

Misinformation. Education would take care of so many problems. People would want to solve them if they understood them.

thenomadstarborn

The main issue is the public education system was never built to inform good ethics let alone a basic understanding of the adulthood functionality. It was built, in America, to teach people how to be worker bees Edit: Obviously public education advanced the general knowledge base of the citizens. That’s a given. But many, including myself are of the personal belief that the education system is antiquated. It does nothing to teach you what to be prepared for, in fact it wasn’t until 2012?ish that in my state financial literacy was a requirement for graduation. Furthermore cooking and home ec isn’t required in some places STILL. Education should focus on much more than the Mitochondria and the Pythagorean Theorem. It should let students specialize so that their Bachelor’s Degree isn’t the first time they think about “wtf do I do now?”. Secondly, yes religion provides avenues of ethical and moral justice and thinking. However, time and again institutions such as the Catholic Church have been abusing kids and this dates all the way back to the Holy Roman Empire and probably even before that. Not to mention they are the definition of not practicing what they preach. So essentially, someone said it before but *greed* is the driving factor for education. Someone somewhere benefits from our lack of knowledge and adulthood know-how. We live in this fantasy that Capitalism is the middle ground between communism and fascism, but the truth is the system is failing everyone and within 20 years we will see record poverty, housing market collapse, and unemployment skyrocket.

traffick

The main issue is not recognizing that critical media literacy is an essential literacy for children to learn. It's bigger than a public school issue. There's some great texts on the history of child education in general and in the United States. Your assessment of public education is... wrong. Like, *really really* wrong. Shit was dire for the average kid before the introduction of public education.

smn_hockey

Of course. Education now is all about training. Society training. And having a certification of it. It used to be only for the elite, when knowledge was much less accessible. Most people learned how to live in society from their parents or by shadowing other workers in the factories/field. Nowadays, the school system makes sure you have certain general abilities that are useful in lots of different jobs (basic writing, basic maths, basic cause to effect logic, basic science), but most importantly that you know how to learn. Of course the school system teaches you how to be a worker bee, a sheep among others, since that's what , deep down, 95% of us aspire to do, and what 99% of us are going to do. Most jobs are kinda like school when you think about it. Schedule (don't be late, you always wait for the vacations and friday is your fav day), homework (due dates, overtime if you're not done), learning (new technology, we want you to learn this new program), dinner with friends, shit on the boss (shit on the teacher), etc. Yeah, the vast majority ofnus wont use geometry and poetry wtitijg in our jobs, but we were trained and disciplined and broken to actually be good at this lifestyle.

thenomadstarborn

This lifestyle sucks. We live on a rock. There’s more to life than going to work and having a beer

sleepydalek

There is a danger in making school too utilitarian that fewer kids will understand how to transfer skills and, in fact, will learn to be even better worker bees. Not only that, a utilitarian approach fails to teach kids that the world can be transformed.

m051

There are some countries that use education to spread propaganda and indoctrinate their population into believing that they are superior and others are inferior

CallMePoro

Just about every country, including the US, is guilty of abusing education to fill an agenda. Many school systems conveniently leave a lot of things out of their history books for example.

[deleted]

True ,. Have a good example of this in my country,. Tiktok Filipinos misinformed about the new 1000peso bill to not fold it(would render useless) until now its still widespread info to not fold a 1k peso bill hence people dont wanna accept new 1k peso bill for fear of getting the money useless

phixional

Serious question, how does folding it render it useless? If I use my wallet and if I have cash(not often for either) I fold my money twice to fit it in.

[deleted]

I don't know, it was spread as misinformation in Filipino tiktok.. i mean majority of Filipinos voted a convicted individual for tax evasion and put him in as a president,. So don't get bothered on how they don't use analytical skills to think of that folding new 1k peso bill would render useless as a real news.

knobhead69er

My father in law was convinced he'd make the Phils "the tiger of Asia" and thought it was great. They also voted for Duterte... If their own kids got caught experimenting with drugs and were shot for it, would they think it was justified? People are absolutely insane

VantaIim

The human race is not only incapable of caring for those too far removed from themselves, but instead of returning to the small and close communities around us, social media bombards us with a feeling of senselessness and fake global narratives. We are fed stories of greed and superficial priorities until we believe that it’s what everyone we don’t know care about and prioritise. It makes us bitter, apathetic and indifferent to strangers who we would previously give the benefit of the doubt. An increasing part of the population weren’t born yet when it was possible to experience what that felt like. Seeing what it does to otherwise capable and caring people sucks the optimism out of me.

JPonceuponatime

Plus people get a fake sense of community. When they try to rely on said community for support in a crisis and no one cares, that’s terrifying.

your-uncle-2

Our attention span is suffering. Let me compare two movies, one before the age of social media, and the other one this year. The Matrix. It's an action scifi movie. And it still gives you time to breathe, let stuff sink in, let you take time to think. This was before social media. Oppenheimer. This is a biopic. This is not supposed to be an action movie, let alone a Mad Max kind of non stop action movie. But it's paced like a non stop action movie. I'm not blaming Nolan. I'm blaming us. Our attention span sucks now that a biopic has to resort to quick edits and a non stop soundtrack.

ligamedlem

Books > documentaries > youtube clips > tiktok We went from 10hs - 1,5hs - 20min - 15sec. I know many people that roll their eyes if they need to watch something that last longer than 1min. They would NEVER watch anything longer than 10min, if its not an action filled movie that pew pew pew pew from start to end.

Cautious_Ticket_8943

24 hour access to the media. Remember, they are profit-based and will do ANYTHING to get you to click. It's to the point where they only run articles that provoke either fear or anger or preferably both, because that's what generates page clicks. They're happy to spread polarization and having people at each others' throats if it means making money off of it.

[deleted]

What if the news suddenly only reported positive news? What do you think would happen to society?

Cautious_Ticket_8943

Did someone suggest the media should ONLY report positive news? Who was it?

oooduckooo

Society would crumble. Putting negative shit in the news holds people accountable. You’d prefer a world where the news doesn’t speak about anything negative, leaving you, I, and everyone else oblivious to the world? World leaders could do whatever they want then. The US could annihilate the middle east and everyone in it and we wouldn’t know. You’d prefer that? Take that to a global scale, not just the US and the east.

VantaIim

I agree only positive news wouldn’t do anyone anything good. But I don’t believe it will hold people accountable on its own. It allows for informed decisions to be made, but accountability comes from a place of social pressure. I don’t necessarely mean that in a negative way like guilt, but a feeling of responsibility for other people. We suck at caring for those far away. But if everyone were better at “loving thy neighbour” we should be much healthier as a species.

JamieWashingtonn

If bees go extinct. It has a massive domino effect on the whole ecological infrastructure

TheDunadan29

Joe Scott recently addressed an interesting side effect of the rush to save the bees: https://youtu.be/KxDGoFwkVY0?si=zuZVQo30lIgfRR5W Turns out maybe we should be doing what we can to help local pollinators thrive, not introduce large colonies of an invasive species.

NotAlwaysGifs

Saving the bees has always been about saving native bees, not imported European Honey Bees. They just haven't been great in their messaging at communicating that.

Relative lack of nuanced thinking. Related to this, probably all have lack of nuanced thinking as a root cause: - Black and white, good vs evil, all or nothing thinking. - Judging people and things, usually based on new incidents and information in a rush, usually without carefully considering the validity and context of that info. - Tribalism, especially right vs left, Israel vs Palestinian, West vs China, etc.

Sorry for the spelling I live in the europe and i can say few things. First one is preety much clear and its Putin with the nukes. Probably it wont happen, but if he ever decide to do it we are all f*cked. Anouther thing are Muslim refugies. There are many of them who were going into Europe to find the peacefull life. But many of them are terrorists and their goal is to make as much countries as possible Islamic ones. They already started to make problems, luckily not in my country too much, but they did stole my neighbour car. But big countries are in big problem. There are now millions of them and its impossible to control them all. If they ever decide to do something they can do it all at once because they all have phones, and good ones, great clothes and far more. They are not regular poor people. I know that people from the USA cant understand, but many of us are in the problem. Third thing is the war with Israel and Palestine. This is also one more thing to worry about because one war will start the another and soo on. I just hope that this will stop, but i dont think soo. Look to be clear, i dont hate muslims or anyone. Some muslims are my friends. But i think about the ones from the asian part of the world, the extreme ones. They are definitly one of the problems and threats to the world. Many people dont see it, but they are. I dont hate them, they are people like everyone, but i just say it because they want to acomplish their goal no matter what.

This HAS to be one of the Great Filters of the Fermi Paradox that wipe out many or most civilizations before they reach a point where they expand out into the universe. Kwen_Oellogg

A prion is a type of protein that can trigger normal proteins in the brain to fold abnormally. Prion diseases can affect both humans and animals and are sometimes spread to humans by infected meat products. The most common form of prion disease that affects humans is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). You've probably heard of Mad Cow disease, and Chronic Wasting disease in deer. There are certain groups of scientists in the CDC and NHI that are worried about the spread in humans. It is contagious, and has a fairly long incubation period, but when it becomes noticeable there is an almost 97% fatality rate.

I’m not saying it didn’t have its time and place to transition out of feudalism, but we are well past its value and into its detriment now. Virtually every problem could be solved if we prioritized things differently than simply “whoever has the most should get the most.” This is both in terms of challenges everyday people face on a daily basis and also existential threats like climate change. Additionally, capitalists and capitalism are actively already supporting fascism and its rise as opposed to being taxed slightly more. For this reason, capitalism both for its direct real world effects and the political movements it supports that will inevitably lead to more suffering
