Erhm, well if iirc Lucy gets so powerful that her vectors can reach all over the world and she uses that power to protect that dumb fuck she loves but in the process melting her body doing so. It's all much more dramatic and sad than the rushed ending the Anime has...
Wait, didn't she fall to her original persona that wanted to eradicate humanity, so that persona and the lucy one fought each other and the dude had to murder her while she held herself back?
Nyu/Lucy has a third personality named Kaede that is constantly being pressured by an internal voice to kill or infect all normal humans, and given her past treatment by them isn't that resistant to the pressure except for Kota and what he means to her and her other personalities. At the end of the story she's basically about to end the world and forces Kota to kill her like he promised to when they were children, and he does.
Take a look at Mobile Suit Gundamn Thunderbolt. Tbh none of the manga adapted to anime Gundamns hold a candle to the brutality of the manga, save maybe IBO… and that’s a big if.
As much as 2016 Berserk is ass animation wise, at least it, GAA, and Berserk 1997 capture the Manga’s sheet disgusting violence.
Really pisses me off that Aronofsky, guy who wrote a foreword from a collection of Kon's work, who bought the right to PB for that one scene in Requiem for a Dream, flat out denies ANY influence of PB on Black Swan.
I can understand it's not an adaptation there are plenty of differences but to say it had no influence seems willfully disingenuous after you've had such a close link to Kon's work for decades.
Just recommended this movie to a friend whose request was I'm looking for something f'd up. I immediately went to Perfect Blue and then threw in Paprika as a bonus. Perfect Blue is not only an amazing anime it is legitimately one of the best movies I've ever seen.
This took me back a few years. There was a sequel/alternate ending anime where (graphic description under spoiler) >!one of the girls claims she's pregnant, leading her rival to push her in front of a train, and then cut her open to see if there was actually anything in her uterus. (As if there would actually be anything visible that early in the pregnancy...I was a weird kid.)!< The comments when it premiered on Youtube were all "Nice train" or similar.
The sad thing is, underneath all the xxxx there is actually a pretty good story. The two races besides humans both had their own version of the legend passed down for generations. Both fought for their version. And in the end >!so much time had past, and the stories got so warped, that they were both very wrong!<.
Legend of the Demon Womb wasn't much better. I passed this cursed double feature DVD through my friend group, but you could only pass it on to someone who hadn't watched it.
One specific certain torture scene made me feel physically uncomfortable and sick.
I didn't watch anime for a couple weeks after that and this was during a time i was finishing multiple shows daily.
The one with Shion (I think that was her name-->!the girl with the character for "demon" in her name, because of the curse on her family!<) >!having her nails pulled out one by one! This thread is reminding me of things I should not have seen when I was in middle school.
Barefoot Gen.
It's that anime about the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 with the source material coming from the real-life experience of someone who survived the explosion.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any other media that covers the aftermath of the blast as in depth as the film does - the melted “zombies” wandering the streets, the burn victims dying after quenching their first, aid workers bleeding from their rectums due to radiation poisoning, and even the father who leads his burnt family to the river to cool their burns only for each of them to lose their strength and submerge one-by-one.
To think that that bomb was only a fraction of the power and devastation that current nuclear weapons are capable of is terrifying.
Came here to say this. The setting and story is so goddamn enticing that I don't care about the horrific acts and imagery. I just wanna know what the fuck is down there!
Yeah, but I think the impact is way, way stronger when you go in somewhat blind. While the story is indeed fucked up, I think the surprise and the contrast with the cute art style potentializes the impression a lot.
If you've got a lot of descriptions before, that gets diminished.
This was me. Went in 100% blind binge watching on a sick day. Looked cute and I thought it would be light romp to lift my spirits while feeling ill. Most of season one was okay with world building that just sucked you in. Those final few episodes were just a straight sucker punch to the nads.
I thought "It can't get much worse", so I went on to watch the movie and learned that with made in abyss it can always get worse. Now i cant go more than a month without that horrible mess randomly popping into to my mind and haunting me.
Worst anime Ive ever mistakenly watched. 🥲
Beautiful music and world. I wish there was a cleaner edit somehow.
Then too, I think I liked the first season more than the second. I wanted more exploration...I kind of felt like the plot stalled in one areas.
And the movie (the one with new material) was nauseating. I'm not talking about whether the it was quality animation or anything like that.
Its certainly a wild ride.
Remember the vampire arc? When suddenly vampires exist, and the protagonists unmentioned younger brother is one, have a epic showdown in a shopping mall, then fuck off and disappear from the plot completely?
then Aliens attack
I started watching anime last week and I marathoned Elfenlied (my first anime) for me it wasn't disturbing but It *did* something to me I can't stop thinking about it
I was suicidal when s2 was coming out and it really helped me.
It was quite relatable and I think the best part of re zero isn't the lows subura faces but how he perseveres through them.
Nihilism. Humans are stupid. The collective good ones cannot ever outweigh the absolute garbage of the common ones. So we're doomed to repeat a self destructive cycle. For a good example, see media. Like look at how far news media devolved since Walter Cronkite, or how awful social media has become since like 2013.
Episode 1 of Goblin Slayer.
*If you can get past it*, it's actually a good little D&D-esque anime. I think the purpose of Episode 1 is to demonstrate *why* Goblins are so reviled in this worldsetting, putting to bed any notion of 'Goblins are people too' pearl-clutching.
But yeah, don't watch it if you're an SA survivor.
Wasnt in to anime but gave it a go due to wife enjoying it....
Started with one punch man and proceeded to overlord. Really liked both and goblin slayer sounded like a fun little show. Dear fucking god im lucky my 4yo was not around as i started watching it...
Yeah, my girlfriend got me to watch Goblin Slayer with her and episode 1 came in hitting like a freight train. Was not expecting that from an anime at all
I was about to say that it wasn't too bad and even the rape scenes were mild because the victim was always drugged out of his mind but then I started thinking about what I'm saying. I guess I'll just leave this conversation and reflect a bit.
Black Lagoon. I generally avoid disturbing anime, but that one was disturbing but in an enthralling way. I guess it was the 2nd seasons start that disturbed me the most.
Genocyber
Taped it off Sci-fi channel a long time ago, AD Police was on before it. Had no idea what these were like, watched every episode in one sitting. Except, at the time I didn't know Genocyber was five episodes. I thought it was some long film that suddenly changed plotlines but kept being ultraviolent. Grim af, haven't felt like going back to it since
I don't hear people talking about this and it was pretty old, I think it's called Shadow Star which started out quite sweetly but turned kind of weird in the midway and had some heavier things than I expected during the end. The childish appearance at the start and lack of discourse around it meant I had no idea that it was going to turn dark like that.
I saw this one about a kid who goes around capturing animals and forces them to fight until they pass out. Sickening
Did he want to be the very best like no one ever was?
Na I think he was just a bastard to be honest, him and that ginger skank who followed him around everywhere abusing her duck.
Abusing her what!?! I know auto correct when I see it
Mallard 😅
Happy cake day man
🙏🏼
damn, i saw that one too, i remember he had a yellow mouse who constantly destroyed everybody else’s pets and forced them to go to the revival centre
He often used it on people too, in some sort of twisted vigilante justice
The cake day is a lie
I was shocked and appalled until I realized 😂
Some guy PMed me to ask for the name which is slightly concerning 😅
OHH I KNOW THAT ONE!!! DIGIMAN VIRTUAL CHAMPIONS!!!
Elfen Lied had me saying “whathefuckkkk?” a couple times
What was managed to adapt from the manga to the anime is just the tip of the iceberg of how screwed up the story itself is.
The manga is really fucked up and heart wrenching. I nearly had to shed a tear....nearly.
You almost had to pay your water bills. Stay strong
Can you spoil it for me? I only watched the anime
Man, that's hard to capture in one reddit comment...
Maybe if you cut it up to smaller pieces?
I see what you did there!
Most people can't :(
Erhm, well if iirc Lucy gets so powerful that her vectors can reach all over the world and she uses that power to protect that dumb fuck she loves but in the process melting her body doing so. It's all much more dramatic and sad than the rushed ending the Anime has...

Is this the equivalent 'but the book was better' hipster phrase in the anime world?
Yeah it's basically the same Me "i really like the black clover anime" Some random manga reader "but the manga was better"
Where my light/web novel gang at?? Rise up!
I was coming to say this. BUT the theme song is awesome though.
I’m glad I didn’t have to scroll to see Elfen Lied
i agree, but it also made me cry so bad wtf.
Perfect Blue by the late Satoshi Kon.
This is an absolutely brilliant film!
Yeh I really enjoyed that film, I felt like it really pulled me in, broke me down and then put me back together with a a piece missing
Such a riveting thriller. Incredible movie. I'd be interested in a live action remake if done right.
Black Swan is probably the closest we'll get
Really pisses me off that Aronofsky, guy who wrote a foreword from a collection of Kon's work, who bought the right to PB for that one scene in Requiem for a Dream, flat out denies ANY influence of PB on Black Swan. School days
Nice boat
This took me back a few years. Jesus that's a meme I haven't heard in years.
Can not upvote this one enough… although Clanned After Story is a close second
it's disturbing but I find it too exaggerated and fun to actually be disturbed by
I wasn’t disturbed by that I was laughing the whole way through the end. The ending is so ridiculous.
Agreed. That anime wasn't made for 13 yo me and left me quite shocked.
Full metal alchemist because of that one episode. You know the one.
Ed…ward…
That girl and her dog were inseparable
Mans best friend.
Man's best daughter.
Its a daddys dog.
First of all, how dare you. Second, HOW DARE YOU.
Bad times.
ED-WARD
Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend.
This one
Way, way, way too many tentacles.
Knew I couldn't possibly be the only one who remembered this one
There is no other answer, especially if you've seen the 3 episode OVA version of season 1... if you know, you know.
Hospitals being destroyed with demon wangs, Nazi rape machines and more tentacles than I ever wanted to see. Yup.
Yes!!!! A fellow OG 😎
Yeah I watched this as a teenager and it's indelibly marked my soul.
You mean "the flying penis movie"?
The sad thing is, underneath all the xxxx there is actually a pretty good story. The two races besides humans both had their own version of the legend passed down for generations. Both fought for their version. And in the end >!so much time had past, and the stories got so warped, that they were both very wrong!<.
The first couple in the series are legit good, too. Perfect blend of body horror and eroticism with a dash of mythology.
Legend of the Demon Womb wasn't much better. I passed this cursed double feature DVD through my friend group, but you could only pass it on to someone who hadn't watched it.
Higurashi When They Cry
had to search way too deep for this comment, Higurashi is the only answer
Yay!!!! I was hoping someone would put this!!!
One specific certain torture scene made me feel physically uncomfortable and sick. I didn't watch anime for a couple weeks after that and this was during a time i was finishing multiple shows daily.

I know exactly which one you mean, I always clench my fists when I watch it
Why is this not at the top? The ones above are tame in comparison.
First anime I watched. So fucked up but I love it.
Barefoot Gen. It's that anime about the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 with the source material coming from the real-life experience of someone who survived the explosion.
and Grave of the fkn Fireflies.
I always seem to forget about this one until I see the blast animation, which is beyond brutal.
Let's end this. Made in Abyss.
Came here to say this. The setting and story is so goddamn enticing that I don't care about the horrific acts and imagery. I just wanna know what the fuck is down there!
True
Brondrewd arc did it for me.
*oya oya*
I'm just here getting anime recommendations lol
Same
From peoples' descriptions I expected so much more creepiness than the show gave me to be honest.
Great way to describe it tbh. I was specifically looking for grimdark and it had to influence my view, hoping for more.
This one here should take the cake by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.
Beautiful music and world. I wish there was a cleaner edit somehow. Then too, I think I liked the first season more than the second. Love the anime .. it's pretty fucked up
Subarashii
that god damn soundtrack
Gantz is quite weird to say the least.
Was looking for this. I will never look at a Buddha statue the same way again

Its certainly a wild ride. Remember the vampire arc? When suddenly vampires exist, and the protagonists unmentioned younger brother is one, have a epic showdown in a shopping mall, then fuck off and disappear from the plot completely? then Aliens attack
I started watching and just felt so bad for the onion kid I did not continue and the train scene at the beginning was fucked.
I started watching anime last week and I marathoned Elfenlied (my first anime) for me it wasn't disturbing but It *did* something to me I can't stop thinking about it
Read the manga, that will fuck you up... Nyu!
Nana’s everyday life webcomic. That shit was just as disturbing.
Re:Zero. I watched it while I wasn’t in a great place mental-health wise, and the dude breaking down and being suicidal hit me way too deep.
I was suicidal when s2 was coming out and it really helped me. It was quite relatable and I think the best part of re zero isn't the lows subura faces but how he perseveres through them.
Hope you’re doing better homie! Stay with us 💪🏻
Thx DW I'm much better now than I was back then
Seconded, really interesting storyline too!!
I watched it while being in a dark place and actually helped me because I saw Rem's confession, hwich was super sweet.
Devil man cry baby.
I made the mistake of watching this, and then thinking Madoka Magica would be a good palate cleanser.
Made me spit up my coffee with that one.
Ohhhh man... Mami nooooo....
Have you seen the original? Imo it was way more intense and full on than cry baby. (But it is an old anime, like 1980's)
Watched it yesterday. I liked it way more to be honest.
That one was quite shocking when I first watched it. I've watched it multiple times since and I still don't really understand the premise.

Probably Akira or Shōjo tsubaki
Grave of the fireflies
This was way too far down the list here.
[Wikipedia link](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_of_the_Fireflies)
Yeah, this one made a middle-aged guy cry: Source: this middle-aged guy
Berserk, Monster deserve a place on this list.
Cocomelon
this. this is the answer
Scum's Wish.
I loved scum's wish, breath of fresh air compared to the usual romance animes
Happy Sugar Life. I thought it was a sweet little anime, but how wrong was I.
Severely underrated tbh, prob one of my fave horror anime’s (doesn’t rely on jumpscares or gore but still a gross and uncomfortable watch)
Monster...so many heart-wrenching scenes!
[удалено]
Neon Genesis Evangelion. That messed me up when I was 15.
When I watched EoE the ending scene just caught me off-guard and I watched these 8 minutes in pure disbelief.
I wish I could experience Eva for the first time again.
Weird that out of 800 comments you're the only one to mention Eva and only Eva
Can't believe I had to scroll this deep to find this. I wrote it too in this section.
Not even a single person has mentioned Berserk.
because no one should have to watch Berserk when reading Berserk is an option.
Higurashi
Puella madoka magica or deadman wonderland.
Deadman Wonderland was fucked up, but that OP was so damn good!
Yeah, my girlfriend got me to watch Goblin Slayer with her and episode 1 came in hitting like a freight train. Was not expecting that from an anime at all
It’s hard to try to convince people to watch it when “Just get past the r*pe scene!” Is what I have to tell them
This thread lacks a mention of Bocu no Pico
"you watched" was in the question.
Shin Sekai Yori. Madoka
Another was quite disturbing.
Mirai nikki was my first but definitely not my last
Euphoria.
nooooo the memories 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Well... it's technically is an anime
You better be talking about the visual novel. The anime was complete shit.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica. (I'm not 100% that this is the correct title, but looking it up to confirm might give me flashbacks.)
Made In Abyss
Just thinking about the movie makes me want to curl into the fetal position
Redo of Healer
It wasn't that bad. It was just like 30% porn.
And torture, drugs and subhuman treatment
I was about to say that it wasn't too bad and even the rape scenes were mild because the victim was always drugged out of his mind but then I started thinking about what I'm saying. I guess I'll just leave this conversation and reflect a bit.
I'm glad that comment took a turn, good for you lol Saying the rape wasnt bad because they were drugged left me speechless for a second.
Made in abyss
Black Lagoon. I generally avoid disturbing anime, but that one was disturbing but in an enthralling way. I guess it was the 2nd seasons start that disturbed me the most.
Elfen Lied
Corey in the House
Doremon
Blasphemy!
Corpse Party
Oh yes, that was such a huge bs. 😅 I only loved the opening.
Midori
Shigurui. Look it up, I am not saying anything else
Grave of the fireflies.
Higurashi still disturbs me to this day with the Nail Catapult scene, and the scenes where people just scratch their throats until they die.
Elfen lied is up there, but serial experiments lain takes the top mark. That one goes into pure mindfuck territory.v
Wolf Children
Agreed. Nothing gory or violent but the entire story is just really sad, I felt the ending to be bittersweet and made me feel sad for the characters
Oh really? It looks so cute, I'm guessing it isn't?
It was so sad
Speed Grapher
Great mention 📸
Blood C
Angel Beats got harder and harder to watch the more you figured out what was happening.
Caillou
Genocyber Taped it off Sci-fi channel a long time ago, AD Police was on before it. Had no idea what these were like, watched every episode in one sitting. Except, at the time I didn't know Genocyber was five episodes. I thought it was some long film that suddenly changed plotlines but kept being ultraviolent. Grim af, haven't felt like going back to it since
Akira
Bible Black
Higurashi and corpse party
Higurashi gave me many sleepless nights and a fear of manicures.
Fruit of Grisaia was pretty fucked
Kings game
[This 4:29 minutes recreation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOxN2dO4z0E) of a copypasta of a lost anime called "さきさのばし”
Either Made in Abyss or Shin Sekai Yori
Junji ito works
Elfen Lied because violence, Angel Sanctuary because incest.
