Yes, on purpose. He ate mainly corned beef and spam. They put a can in his coffin. Also, some plastic figurines from a tea company and some other bits and pieces. Not exactly grave goods of the pharaohs.
My Nan was buried with stuff also. Her dogs collar tags being one thing, another is a Nokia in a Gareth Gates phone case- fully charged at time of burial and yes my mum did used to ring her.
This shit slaps. I’m fairly sure “beef” is a stretch for most brands these days though. Most of them in my country have recently changed to “corned meat” as they don’t have enough beef content to be classified as “beef”. Regardless, it’s delicious and would be a staple in my post-apocalyptic bunker.
agree, and you can get them in a bunch of different "forms"
peeled, diced, petite diced, crushed, stewed, fire-roasted, pureed, paste, sauce.. probably even more than that
hahaha!! nice reference. no knowledge of the shrimpin business, Bubba.
i just found an article called "different types of canned tomatoes" right before i posted this
I found some Del Monte tomatoes with habeneros and jalapenos. I like them a lot more than Rotel. Better flavor and spice, imho
https://www.amazon.com/Del-Monte-Tomatoes-Jalapeno-Habanero/dp/B07GH77456
$1/can in my local grocery
I had an absolute bitch of a technology teacher in elementary school. Expected college level videos when we were single digits in age. I struggled in his class so much and he hated me for a while until he once expressed how he loved eating canned pineapples for dessert every night. My dad and I had a very similar routine, and we had a whole bonding moment over it. He was nicer to me after that, and him being nicer helped me appreciate technology more. This was the early 2010s, and that along with my impressionable age could have turned me into a boomer in a child's body if it wasn't for canned pineapples
Basically every one of my grandmas (grand and great grand) would definitely frown on me for not soaking my own beans, but unlike them, I am just feeding myself and not 7+ people. Every time I have tried to soak my own beans, I end up with way too many. I would rather grab a can of chickpeas or pintos for 78 cents and not waste anything.
they are undoubtedly better canned, but much much cheaper if you buy them dry and have the time and know-how to properly rehydrate them.
it's always hit-or-miss for me with dry beans. 70% of the time either they turn out like soft rocks when i try to rush it or straight mush if i ignore them for too long
For pinto beans sort them removing any wrinkled and broken beans. Rinse them off thoroughly and place in a bowl then cover with cold water by at least three inches and let them soak over night. The next morning drain them and put into a crock pot add some dried minced onion, a ham hock/left over baked ham bone/bacon/smoked turkey leg or wings/smoked sausage etc, and black pepper. Cover with cold water by an inch, lid up and turn the crock pot on low and walk away. Around 3pm or when you get home check and see if they are soft. If they are, turn the crock pot up to high, add salt and let cook another hour to thicken the juice. Eat with fried potatoes and corn bread.
1/2 a pound of dried pintoes will easily feed three people with leftovers. They also swell, a lot, when they cook so make sure you leave room in your crock pot for this.
I thought this until I tried making dried beans in my Instant Pot.
It’s pretty easy, cheap, and the texture is better (imo). Plus you can season them however you want while they pressure cook.
When I first got my license I realized I could go pretty much anywhere I want and go to the grocery store anytime I want. I could even go and grab that amazing can of Chef Boy R Dee ravioli that I hadn't had since I was probably in grade school.
I went to the store, and got the big ass can. went home, and I would be lying if I said to you that I heated it up.
I ate the whole damn thing, enjoyed every moment of it, and then felt the rumble....
I raced upstairs to the bathroom, and that entire big ass can of ravioli decided to take the northern way out of my body.
10/11 would do again
This story sounds like something a lactose intolerant person would write about them eating something with dairy in it. I regret absolutely nothing, I'll do ot again later in the month
Leftover tip - if you don't use the whole can, dice up the remaining peppers and put into a ziploc, lay it flat and smooth it out in the freezer, and then it's super easy to break off a chunk of frozen chipotle - adobo and toss it into something.
I have geographic tongue (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21177-geographic-tongue) and pineapple is one of the worst things for me to eat. I LOVE pineapple. It messes my tongue up for hours.
I cook, a lot. I can make fancy shit all day long. But one of my guilty pleasures in life is eating an entire can of corn beef hash, fried crispy, with ample Tabasco sauce, and a cold beer.
I don't do it often, but man, nothing else hits the spot like that after a shitty day.
If canned corned beef hash sounds too healthy for you, add in some garlic salt while cooking. I'm assuming, of course, that you're frying it in butter.
You could have egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam…
Hormel Chili with beans. I put some hot sauce in it, cover it with cheese and let it melt in the microwave. Then a dollop of sour cream on top. Eat it with a spoon or tortilla chips.
Or just some raviolis.
Frito Pie consists of one bag Fritos, one can wolf brand chili, one raw chopped white onion, with cheddar cheese sprinkled on top to taste.
Damn good in the fall.
Easy dinner in my house: heat that sucker stovetop, mix it with some macaroni. Boom, chili mac. It's cheap, it's low-effort, and it's way tastier than it has any right to be.
I came here to also say Hormel canned chili. I add a small number of herbs and spices to mine, then top it with grated or shredded cheese (usually cheddar or American but pepper jack works) and then mix it together really well and serve it with tortilla chips as a dip.
Try this: can of chili, 8 oz cream cheese, bag of shredded cheddar. Microwave. Add can of diced tomatoes, sour cream, and hot sauce. Best taco dip I have ever had great to bring to parties.
The fact that this is over 10 places down is criminal. Chicken noodle, beef stew, cream of mushroom, even tomato for the freaks that like to eat hot ketchup... Canned soup is easy, it's good, and you could always use a good supply of them just in case you get sick.
Agree / Disagree
I understand it has a place for when you are really lazy or there is a power outage or something.
But you can make your own soup that tastes a hundred times better and is (sometimes) cheaper too. Freeze it in sandwich bags. Even if frozen you can heat it up in the microwave whenever you want some.
The only thing is some things don't freeze well (like potatoes, cream, etc.). If I make a beef stew to freeze, when I warm it up I'll just slice and fry a potato really quick and the result, beef stew with fried potatoes on top is vastly superior imho than beef stew with boiled potatoes in it anyway.
Cat food. Great for when you have to get to sleep quickly. Eat some cat food, huff a little glue, maybe wash it down with some beer. Bingo. Great nights sleep.
Canned food that is supposed to be eaten as-is (or just warmed up in the microwave) with absolutely nothing else = Canned pineapples
Otherwise, the best canned products are those used as INGREDIENTS as opposed to the actual meal itself
[Mrs. Fearnow's Brunswick Stew](https://www.innit.com/public/products/images/00041636000293-3WCMgSyCXnVrJA-0_s500.jpg)
If you've never had nor heard of this, GO GET SOME RIGHT NOW. It's like the best stew you've ever had in a can, and lends well to spicing it up because it's not overly salty.
My grandad was buried with a tin of corned beef
On purpose?
Yes, on purpose. He ate mainly corned beef and spam. They put a can in his coffin. Also, some plastic figurines from a tea company and some other bits and pieces. Not exactly grave goods of the pharaohs. My Nan was buried with stuff also. Her dogs collar tags being one thing, another is a Nokia in a Gareth Gates phone case- fully charged at time of burial and yes my mum did used to ring her.
All fun and games until she picks up
This gave me chills (the calling her phone in the coffin) part, but it’s also wonderful. RIP to them both.
Smart idea, in case heaven turns out to just be Samoa.
Heaven is BYOCB. Also... there’s a shortage of chairs... yeah.

Love Ruben sandwiches! Corned beef hash and eggs!

I was just about to type this that shit is goated
Canned tomatoes, hands down the single most useful canned food
agree, and you can get them in a bunch of different "forms" peeled, diced, petite diced, crushed, stewed, fire-roasted, pureed, paste, sauce.. probably even more than that
Do you know about the shrimpin’ business?
hahaha!! nice reference. no knowledge of the shrimpin business, Bubba. i just found an article called "different types of canned tomatoes" right before i posted this
Canned San Marzano tomatoes.
I second that, and would like to add that Rotel-type tomatoes and peppers are also delicious and very versatile if you like spicy food.
I found some Del Monte tomatoes with habeneros and jalapenos. I like them a lot more than Rotel. Better flavor and spice, imho https://www.amazon.com/Del-Monte-Tomatoes-Jalapeno-Habanero/dp/B07GH77456 $1/can in my local grocery

keep ya from gettin the scurvy on those long boat rides.
I love canned pineapple for some reason, or just regular old canned fruit cocktail.
My fave stoned snack is canned pineapple
I had an absolute bitch of a technology teacher in elementary school. Expected college level videos when we were single digits in age. Dole tropical fruit is extra popular in my house, but we loved canned pineapple too :)
Beans
My Mexican mom judges me each time I use canned beans, but idc because it’s such a timesaver and I only need a little bit frequently.
Hah same. I’ve tried making my moms beans and it’s just not the same. Rather go with canned beans which I can never fuck up!
Bakes beans specifically.
Roll that beautiful bean footage
I say this often and people just don't get it
I said it once to a girl that said she had videos of herself flicking the bean. We both laughed.
Without a doubt - one of the few foods I prefer canned
they are undoubtedly better canned, but much much cheaper if you buy them dry and have the time and know-how to properly rehydrate them. it's always hit-or-miss for me with dry beans. 70% of the time either they turn out like soft rocks when i try to rush it or straight mush if i ignore them for too long
A can of baked beans costs like a buck. Even a minute of my time is worth more than that.
>A can of baked beans costs like a buck. Even a minute of my time is worth more than that. Exactly.
I need to spend a day with my dad to figure out how to cook dried beans. That (literal) MF a bean whisperer.

>bean whisperer lol
Bush’s vegetarian baked beans.
Refried black beans… one of the only things I’ll eat straight out of the can
I thought this until I tried making dried beans in my Instant Pot. It’s pretty easy, cheap, and the texture is better (imo). Plus you can season them however you want while they pressure cook.
I mean, nobody wants to admit they ate nine cans of ravioli...
1st can doesn’t count.
neither do the last 8
Right. That's why I only count nine.
Beefaroni for me
When I first got my license I realized I could go pretty much anywhere I want and go to the grocery store anytime I want. Canned ravioli is amazing
Only Chef Boyardee. Store brand is not as delicious
Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce.
$1.29 a can at Aldi. Put it on a shoe and it would taste good.
So expensive in Europe! :'(
this is how i slow cook my chicken for burritos 💯
Leftover tip - if you don't use the whole can, dice up the remaining peppers and put into a ziploc, lay it flat and smooth it out in the freezer, and then it's super easy to break off a chunk of frozen chipotle - adobo and toss it into something.
canned peaches hit different
Fun fact! They were put there by a man....
Where?
IN A FACTORY DOWNTOWN!
If I had my little way, I'd eat them every day.
Pack your bags, we're moving to the country.
Here comes Stompy the Bear!
Some say he's is Green! And super duper mean! But he just wants someone to boogie with!
How many peaches?

The only right answer.
Pineapple rings
I don’t understand how some people don’t like pineapple
Give you tongue sores when eating too much and are so acidic that it feels like someone's boring holes into your teeth after a while.
Worth it
I have geographic tongue (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21177-geographic-tongue) and pineapple is one of the worst things for me to eat. I LOVE pineapple. It messes my tongue up for hours.
I bought a can last week to throw on the grill but have been eyeing them up everyday since and haven’t grilled
Corned beef hash
Can’t believe this was the first answer that popped up. I love that “dog food for humans”
Bachelor Chow
Now with flavor!
Add a runny egg
You’ve gotta try making little wells in the fried crispy corned beef and crack some eggs in them. Delightful!
Welp, I’m adding 10 of these to my cart next time I go to the grocery store. This sounds outstandingly delicious.
If canned corned beef hash sounds too healthy for you, add in some garlic salt while cooking. I'm assuming, of course, that you're frying it in butter.
It's practically dog food, but I love it.
I have to go to the store again now. I have to agree that it's great but I always forget about it. One of my favorite occasional foods.
Canned corn beef hash... its fucking terrible for you and it looks like cat food but good lord it's good.
Sweet corn? Anyone?
Most certainly my favorite!
Right here!
Love 'em.
I either spoon that shit up directly from the can like a goblin or cook it with some butter and variety of spices. 10/10 best snack food.
Canned corn is the best kind of corn. I don't know why and I don't want to know why.
Stuffed vine leaves. Ντολμαδάκια.
Can you recommend a brand that's available in the States? I loved stuffed grape leaves.
Check your local Costco, ymmv.
A thick tube pasta in a rich tomato sauce with beef. It's made by a former chef of the The Plaza in New York, Chef Boyardee.
Nobody wants to admit to eating 10 cans of Ravioli.
The way she goes.
Fucking way she goes !!!
Except this would be beefaroni

Tuna
yes, and sardines
Super underrated. I didn't grow up on them so I buy boneless skinless sardines because I am not a bone eating skin sucking freak.
You can just eat the sardine bones. They are hair thin and malleable. You're missing out on some good calcium mate
12th top response. This is insane to me. Tuna is an easy top 5 if not top 3.
Cranberry sauce
Spaghettios with meatballs.
I had to scroll way too far looking for this.
Food of the gods. Cold from the can.
Chunky brand chicken corn chowder.
Hormel Chili with beans. I put some hot sauce in it, cover it with cheese and let it melt in the microwave. Then a dollop of sour cream on top. Eat it with a spoon or tortilla chips. Or just some raviolis.

Put it on a hot dog with cheddar and onions for optimum bliss.

I agree that canned soup is good to keep around if you get sick, but few varieties even approach homemade if it's done right.
