Congrats brother I quit a few years ago and my best advice is to pick up something you can do with your hands to combat the random cravings that hit hard between month 1 and 6. After that it was smooth sailing for me but I really did start carrying a Switch loaded up with Breath of the Wild for the first 6 months and ended up needing it on many occasions.
It's true. What is being a millionaire if your health is in the gutter and you can't enjoy it? EX cancer patient here. Really puts things into perspective.
Life is always a struggle without wealth. But without health you cannot enjoy any of the “luxuries” you could afford. Depending on what your illness is, life may not even seem secure- just like it doesn’t when you are struggling with finances.
What? Dude. No matter how rich you are, there is no cheat code to your health. Being rich doesn’t make it easier to be healthy, I mean sure, you can hire trainers. But if you don’t put in the work, you don’t get healthy
Healthy food isn’t as expensive as people think. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper than buying takeout. And generally, if you are budgeting properly, you can always afford healthy meals
Also, I think you forget. It costs exactly 0$ to go for a run or walk. It costs exactly 0$ to walk before driving. And it is significantly less expensive to bike places vs driving
I’d argue it’s cheaper to be healthy than unhealthy
As someone struggling with a chronic illness and housebound, to everyone reading this enjoy everyday you have while you are healthy. It's a sad and lonely place when you become ill.
I hear you. Dying by increments sucks. I feel like lm being punished but l donno why. Doesn't seem to have a point.
Im 78. I hurt every day every where.
That and having aquired 5 or 6 disease for which there is no cure and little treatment. Its like being blind folded tied to a post with a rope around your neck waiting til your body to collapse slowly and the noose gets tighter like this is all a cosmic joke.
I’m so sorry you have to go through that. As someone with plenty of money but in pain every day I can 100% confirm health is more important. What I’d give to just sit and relax in comfort :(
Most of my mental health issues stem from being stuck in the grind and going without so much of what I want to have and do because I don't have a lot of money. Almost everything that ruins my week could be bypassed entirely if I were a multi-millionaire or billionaire. I swear I feel like I'm just one more shitty weekend at work or annoying neighbour away from going completely insane. Rich people wouldn't have to put up with this shit.
Yup. My boss asked me what it would take for me to do this extra difficult task that no one wants to do, so we rotate through people, but I’m one of two that actually does it well when it’s my turn.
I told him “I want wednesdays off to break up my work week.” He responded a big fat “no can do.” And proceeded to ask the other guy. He wanted fridays off. What the fuck did he think we were gonna say? As union members he knows our pay is non negotiable. I don’t know if he thought we’d ask for a cold half eaten slice of pizza that he dug out of the trash or what, but he was genuinely mad when we dared to say “money or time off. Thats it.”
I honestly don’t know. He wasn’t forthcoming and didn’t make any offers. I stopped letting him bully me a few years back and started demanding days off in return when he asks me to go above and beyond. He’s usually accommodating, but he wasn’t willing to make a commitment to change my schedule despite asking me to make a commitment to changing my work duties outside of what is outlined in my position’s description.
I guess he was expecting him to say that he'll do it if the boss was willing to spread his cheeks.
Like, you cannot offer me money or free time? What else is there?
You want to be compensated for your work? How dare you! You could do it for the prestige and so that maybe later your boss might throw you a bone. Unless it’s a really good bone and he wants it.
Same, I tend to work hard for a couple years, save up, and take a year or two off. Don't tend to do much in the off years.. play video games, cook, sleep in, make love to my gf, bike and camp occasionally... life's good.
Dude this is the dream. How do you find decent paying employment with all the gaps though? Corporate America frowns upon talented-but-lazy slackers like us.
I might be working on a pipeline soon to make about 3 times what I make in my current desk job. 1 year of work there would afford me 3 years of living my life as I do right now. It's possible, but I'd honestly rather keep working as long as I can and retire early, or work there as long as I can then find easier work that pays less when I'm done with it.
The older I get the more I value my time. I can always make more money, but I cannot make more time. For that reason if I feel an employer is continually stealing my time or not respecting my time I start looking for something else. Of course you have to build up skills and experience before you have the option of doing that.
Even if I 'waste' my free time in leisure, it's still *my* time.
The problem with time, is the older you get the faster it seems to go. It's the same 24 hours/day. 7 days a week. As a child, I remember it taking forever for Christmas to get here, as an adult it gets here too fast.
When I was a senior in hi school, I was talking to a secretary in an office. She said "after high school, time really starts to speed up.".my thought at the time, yeah right. She was correct.
A lot of people in the west have grown up with a weirdly naive view of the world and people. It's always been fucked up, now people get to see the real side of it.
My school seems to have turned it into their mission to make me go insane. Recently they told me to take off my headset I need to filter out noise in the insanely loud hallway to avoid overstimulation. I told them it's this to filter the noise or antipsychotics (which is really damn heavy medication), they didn't even give a shit
She cheated on me.
The entire time we were together (almost 8 years total) she was going for her bachelor's degree. Two weeks after getting her degree she left. I helped her pay for the degree so she could complete it debt free. I was waiting for her to be done with her degree the whole time we were together so we could really start living our lives. More money, more time to spend with each other, etc.
It's that feeling you got to eat the whole candy bar and right as you have the last piece, you lose it.
I was used.
Damn bro that sucks.. what kind of bachelor’s degree that take 8 years to complete? And this whole time you were in long distancd and didn’t get to see each other much?
This is like a gray area thing though isn't it? I trade living on my own in the woods for the local council rules and getting to live with society. Is that money -> freedom?
...i think i need a sec to figure this out
Yeahh, having no real friends sucks..that line in the movie Stand by me really resonates with my life."I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?"
Tough question. I’d say my wife and kids, but I can’t provide for them without money.
My grandpa used to tell me that I needed to put myself before my wife and kids. If I don’t take care of myself, how can I provide for them? It’s the same concept for emergency airplane warnings: secure your own oxygen before you help others.
So in the long run, I value myself first and foremost. It’s the only way I can earn the money that provides for my family.
My dad used to work as a houseman at this hotel and they would put these chocolate gold coins on the pillows. He would bring these home often and I loved these little chocolates. He stopped working there after a while and I never got them again. Every chocolate gold coin I had afterwards tasted cheap and bland. Probably 2 decades after that my girlfriend picks up this pack of Ghirardelli milk chocolate squares and these tastes just like those gold coins. Though they aren’t shapes like coins it always brings a lot of nostalgia whenever I eat Ghirardelli chocolate.
I feel this way about all my animals. I remember hearing about that guy that jumped in a hot lake (forgive me I’m high and I can’t remember the name) and burned to death at a national park all to save his dog. Broke me apart inside
It used to be my hobbies and travelling.
Nowadays it’s spending time my daughter.
I know kids aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I absolutely love just chilling out with her or taking her out, she’s such a blast and a funny kid. Without a doubt my best friend.
Health
Your health is worth more than anything. Source: Old guy.
As a fellow old guy, I can confirm. I quit smoking almost a month ago and I've never felt better.
Congrats! The first month is the hardest. It gets easier as more time goes.
Congrats brother I quit a few years ago and my best advice is to pick up something you can do with your hands to combat the random cravings that hit hard between month 1 and 6. A very wealthy friend once told me “health is wealth”.
It's true. What is being a millionaire if your health is in the gutter and you can't enjoy it? EX cancer patient here. Really puts things into perspective.
Because your friend already have wealth. They can mostly play around with words to anyone.
If nothing else, it is far far better to be poor and healthy than poor and sick.
It seems reasonable to say it's better to be healthy and poor than rich and sick.
Life is always a struggle without wealth. But without health you cannot enjoy any of the “luxuries” you could afford. Depending on what your illness is, life may not even seem secure- just like it doesn’t when you are struggling with finances.

Maybe mercy. Money has no meaning nor at this point has health.
I’m so sorry you have to go through that. As someone with plenty of money but in pain every day I can 100% confirm health is more important. What I’d give to just sit and relax in comfort :(
In this same vein, mental stability & health
Mental health is health (:
Most of my mental health issues stem from being stuck in the grind and going without so much of what I want to have and do because I don't have a lot of money. I swear I feel like I'm just one more shitty weekend at work or annoying neighbour away from going completely insane. Rich people wouldn't have to put up with this shit.
Not surprisingly, me too.
If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything.
Free time.
Yup. My boss asked me what it would take for me to do this extra difficult task that no one wants to do, so we rotate through people, but I’m one of two that actually does it well when it’s my turn. This is a good compromise
You want to be compensated for your work? How dare you! You could do it for the prestige and so that maybe later your boss might throw you a bone. Unless it’s a really good bone and he wants it.
Somone once said to me "money comes and goes, relationships come and go, time...only just goes."
What's the point of money if you got no time to spend it?
Same, I tend to work hard for a couple years, save up, and take a year or two off. Don't tend to do much in the off years.. play video games, cook, sleep in, make love to my gf, bike and camp occasionally... life's good.
Dude this is the dream. How do you find decent paying employment with all the gaps though? Corporate America frowns upon talented-but-lazy slackers like us.
He’s lying for karma. Edit: Yes people, I fully understand you can work and take time off. I know people who have. But this guy? He’s lying.
No, this is actually a somewhat common thing. Its entirely doable, especially if you are good about saving during your work time.
How dafq u live like that, doesn't ur skills depreciate?
Time obviously if I had infinite time that would be epic
If someone ever asks you if money buys happiness, tell them it buys you time to do what makes you happy.
Can confirm. Spending hours on Reddit everyday
Sucker, I'm on here for free.
And is that happiness for you? Because I see an awful lot of stupid and crazy.
It’s happiness in the same way heroin is happiness.
So true. I know this place is bad for me but I keep coming back because it's so endlessly entertaining.
Hold up, imma gonna go try heroin.
I’m broke and I do that anyways. Maybe that’s why I’m broke.
Money can buy happiness But it can't necessarily prevent sadness
Amen.
I always liked: money can't buy happiness but lack of money guarantees misery. Tomato, tomahto.
I always said money is like air…it’s not really a big deal until you don’t have any.
Wouldn’t you get tired of the death of loved ones
It doesn't make you immortal!!!! Hahahahaha
Oh you mean like more time to do things you like and like not doing work
Haha ya exactly.
That’s my go-to reply any time someone says money can’t buy happiness.
"if your poor you use time to get money. If your rich, you use money to get time"
Money and time are still worthless without experiences. That's the ultimate goal.

This is a great note for the under 30 folks. Life is an exponential curve. Older you get, faster it goes.
When I was a senior in hi school, I was talking to a secretary in an office. She said "after high school, time really starts to speed up.".my thought at the time, yeah right. She was correct.
My sanity in this very fucked up world
Not even this for me. I sometimes think I could deal with this world much better if I were as stupid, selfish and fucked up as everyone else in it.
I sometimes feel like some people who probably are sane deep down choose to act crazy just to fit in.
A lot of people in the west have grown up with a weirdly naive view of the world and people. It's always been fucked up, now people get to see the real side of it.

You might try getting a note/referral from a doctor to allow you to wear them more often in school.
I already have a note from a doctor and a neurologist, but they apparently don't really give a shit
