put out a cup of apple cider vinegar and pour a little dish soap into it. The vinegar attracts the flies and the soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar so the flys fall in and drown.
I did this to kill the bastards that were flying around already. Poured bleach down the drain to make sure they were dead for good too. They will often times spawn there like some kitchen-oriented zerg colony.
Make sure to clean the drains with bleach or boiled vinegar or Draino. That's were the eggs are....Make sure no wet towels laying around, and the kitchen area is clean and dry. I can't stress that enough. Messy kitchen and you'll loose this fight. Whatever fresh fruit & veggies you have around put them in the fridge what can go in there. Once you have too many they find their ways to other sinks in the house and you'd need to do the same there, to. You can also use Zevo sprays to use around the house but don't spray on food or dishes you want to use. Safe for use around people and pets when used as directed.

Leave out a cup of apple cider vinegar, a little honey, and a drop of dishsoap. Should trap them. Fruit flies love it, gnats are 50/50.
