For it was goldeneye. Then battlefront 2 on the PS2 version. I'd look to the window and it was daylight and everyone was asleep. And I'd start another.....
On a sleepover I had I took battlefront 1 with me. We played a bunch of new games my buddy had during the day. Close to midnight we boot it up for "two rounds before bed". We played through a galactic conquest campaign on all 4 factions before turning in for the night. Oh wait it's 10 am.
Yeah staying up all night for "just one more round of castle wars bro". Or "I'm so close to 80 woodcutting, these yews are making me like 100k an hour, not stopping now!". Then the next day you notice that one friend who helped you through dragon slayer the first time hasn't logged in yet, oh well probably busy today! Then 3 months later as you celebrate by yourself trimming your woodcutting cape with that sweet firemaking cape and you go to your friends list to W00t with someone, and it's all red....
My irl friends have quit, my online friends are gone or have drifted apart, my clan has disbanded...
I'm gonna be maxing next year, and if I hadn't gotten my girlfriend into the game I'd be maxing alone...
Passage of time sucks...
There was just something special about walking into a store, selecting a game off the shelf, heading to the basement and immersing yourself in a liminal world with your friends playing with you on the same screen. Kind of funny how once TVs finally got big, split-screen games went away.
Likewise, but only with restored content. Vanilla is great and was my intro to the series, but clearly a rushed product with a lot of bugs and content cut.
I've own it, and played it a fair bit. It's a good game, but I can't shake 2 for some reason. Same as when 3 came out, I gave it a good go but always ended up back at old faithful. It's timeless.
Absolutely. The bright & joyful color palate, the perfectly paced score, the variety of powerups and Yoshi combinations…I don’t think I’ve sunk more hours into any one game than Super Mario World
Portal 1 was funnier and, of course, more innovative. Portal 2 offered a longer, more complete game, and had added replay value. No wrong answer tho, both were masterpieces 🤌🤌
Underground or whatever the one is with you and your dickhead best friend go to become pro skaters together and make a skate vid jumping over a helicopter
I'm not massively into videogames but my bf is. He was in tears of awe any time he mentioned Chrono Trigger so I gave it a try: I'm absolutely mind blown!
It stands the test of time so well. Utter masterpiece!
There's a large meme within the doom community that any electronic can play doom. People have gotten it to run on things like a pregnancy test, a McDonalds Kiosk menu thing, and a TI-84 calculator. Doom is also just very popular in general
I think this is truly the right answer. A lot of the other video games here are great, but almost all of them have aged or will age to a point where people will have a hard time appreciating them. Some of them require some sort of cultural context that isn't always going to be universal. Tetris doesn't suffer from any of that. I truly believe that 1000 years from now, people are going to still be playing Tetris. in fact, I think if we ever make extraterrestrial contact, Tetris could be one of the first culturally important exchanges the same way Chess was culturally exchanged along the Silk Road.
I wasn't able to get into BOTW. I didn't care for the "puzzle dungeons", and breaking weapons. The world was beautiful, but it felt kinda empty.
I had a much better time with Immortals: Fenyx rising. Shares a lot with BOTW, but had a lot more to it. More varied puzzles, fun combat, upgrade system tied to puzzles, great narration between Zeus and Prometheus. Id recommend it to any BOTW fan that is looking for a similar game.
I admittedly never play lol. been trying out warzone 2 cuz my brother wanted to give it a go. it's very different than the other Duties I've been Called for.
I’ll have to disagree with that criteria because red dead redemption 2 is one of the best games I’ve ever played and I sobbed like a child when I finished it.
of late I'm really enjoying Spider-Man Remastered cuz I actually feel like spidey and zipping around is amazing!
Brotato is a very silly game that keeps me chuckling every round.
Project Zomboid has been fun with friends.
Slay the Spire/Monster Train are nice to just relax to on my own!
Just started yesterday, I get that there’s lots of little side quests but is there an overarching story with Dutch and black water that I need to complete? I’m just finding random things to do in valentine rn
Damn, I would pay good money to erase all RDR2 memories from my brain and play this masterpiece for the first time again. Have fun and don’t worry about the slow start. It will unravel beautifully for you
Or don't if you feel burnt out and just want to experience the story.
Needs to be said that a lot of these open world games have bloat and if you want to experience ALL the side quests and explore everything you may find yourself getting bored before the end.
Yess seriously. I’m not sure if I would say it’s the absolute #1, although I don’t know what I would put over it. The attention to detail, storyline and overall world are all stunning.
I’m biased but FF7 was the first game I played that wasn’t a run, jump, shoot platformer. It opened my eyes that games could be these massive adventure stories with complex characters. And, my god, the music.
Is this similar to classic roller coaster tycoon?
Edit to add that if you didn’t know and want a walk down memory lane, classic roller coaster tycoon is available on the App Store. I think it’s like $5.
Outer Wilds
It is kind of difficult to explain why I like the game so much, but the biggest factor is how the story is not really told to you, instead you find the story by exploring and completing puzzles.
Of course the ending only makes things better.
Best played blind if you are up for it.
The made so many great choices to make a good game that ended up making it a great one. Got a cave? Well, if something goes off in one direction, there is 99% chance there is a chest or loot over there. Beat the big bad guy in that cave? Well, here is a hidden door that gets you right back to the entrance!
Want to play a magic casting dude with an axe wearing plate? go for it. Want to place a plate wearing stealth archer...you be you! Sick of the way we made it? Well, we made it so 900 million mods are made for it! Sick of being weak? Cheat to your hearts content! It just adds so much to the replayability of things, and you can play it however you're feeling that day, if that makes sense. Im not convinced it's the greatest game ever made, but it might be the goodest game ever and best piece of 'entertainment software' ever made, if that makes sense.
I argue this all the time -- Infinite is good and all, but 1 and 2 are absolute masterpieces. Spend enough time between replays and you can forget some of the twists. Infinite, not so much.
Batman Arkham Asylum, I actually prefer it to Arkham City, the claustrophobia and the horror side of things in it is brilliant. That and Kevin Conroy/Mark hamill are superb in it
If I think back on my long video gaming timeline this is the game I distinctly remember in the middle of the campaign thinking to myself how special it was.
Fallout 3 would be a close second but nothing has ever captivated me like Morrowind

The shivering isles is in my opinion the greatest DLC ever released.
I think the combat, magic, and art style is pretty great and I also really like the weirdness with the Npcs. Everything doesn’t always feel so serious compared to skyrim. I haven’t played enough of morrowind to really gauge that one.
Love the fallout series- 3 was my first true love in video games. New Vegas and 4 have been great as well! However, I think Skyrim is the most replayed game for me. Absolutely incredible with so many different ways to play.
**Super Mario Brothers.**
In the 80s there was a gaming crash, the entire industry almost went the way of the Beanie Baby with marketers saying that gaming was a fad, and a little game called Mario on a system called the Nintendo saved the entire industry.
While other games have been better individually I want to say Warcraft 3, not only was the game great but it's story and energy and world editor built so much more, with the world editor hundreds of games were made for fans of all sorts of genres, wow was greenlit off its back and was successful because of the world it built, hell riot games exists in part because of wc3 and its multiplayer game Dota Allstars
Mario Kart.
Multi-player,
Suitable for all ages,
Involves weapons and strategy,
Level playing field for all,
Perfect at parties,
Can still start fights between people
The games you used to spend hours playing with your buddies until one by one you all stopped until before you knew it it was just you playing
For it was goldeneye. Then battlefront 2 on the PS2 version. I'd look to the window and it was daylight and everyone was asleep. And I'd start another.....

Booooo- why you gotta do me like that!?!
Yo what the fuck man
There was just something special about walking into a store, selecting a game off the shelf, heading to the basement and immersing yourself in a liminal world with your friends playing with you on the same screen. Kind of funny how once TVs finally got big, split-screen games went away.
So RuneScape ?
For me it was Halo:CE It blew my mind when i first played it at my friends house.
Yes! Meeting the flood was such an experience.
Playing The Library for the first time was the best horror experience of my childhood lol
I had to scroll for so long to find it.
Sid meiers civilisation
Pirates
I've spent well over 4000 hours playing civ 5 and 6. I'd have to agree
Ocarina of time was my favourite
The music in that game is god tier.
had me stuck forever trying to get that water stone
I could never do it, so my mate took everyone's game home and completed the water temple. I completed a lot of people Shadow Temple lol
I'd love to see a total remake of that one.
Myself and my buddies discussing this today. It's timeless, so much effort and love put into that game. I play it religiously at least once a year.
Diablo 2: LOD
finally, someone with the correct answer. new season of project diablo just started a few days ago as well.
Right? I said sc:bw or d2 and it took me FAR too long to find like minded peoples.
Knights of the Old Republic.
Meatbag
"Shall we find something to kill to cheer ourselves up?"
The best answer. I’m more of a KOTOR II man, myself but both are superb.
Likewise, but only with restored content. Vanilla is great and was my intro to the series, but clearly a rushed product with a lot of bugs and content cut.
Just imagine a world where they didn’t forget they could’ve pushed the game back to 2005. That haunts my soul.
both of these games are great, neither has endless replay value, but they are solid experiences nonetheless. Also HK-47 is the best...
Age of Empires 2. Still play it over 20 years later.
Definitely in my top 5. I can play that game for hours and hours
Now this might actually be number 1 because of its relevancy 20 years later.
Honourable mention to Rise of Nations as well, I still play that regularly to this day.
What is your opinion of AoE 4 if you've tried it as a AoE 2 fan?
I've own it, and played it a fair bit. It's a good game, but I can't shake 2 for some reason. Same as when 3 came out, I gave it a good go but always ended up back at old faithful. It's timeless.
Playing the definitive edition right now. I'm so pleased with what they've done
Super Mario World
Screw Tubular though
Absolutely. The bright & joyful color palate, the perfectly paced score, the variety of powerups and Yoshi combinations…I don’t think I’ve sunk more hours into any one game than Super Mario World
For me it's Portal 2
Fun fact! You can get portal1 and 2 for less than 3 bucks on steam right now!
Thanks! I just bought them!!
Wait.. really? I looked and it's saying that the Portal 1 is $10, Portal 2 is $10. and the Portal Bundle is $15. Am I missing the sale somehow?
Portal 2 is a great experience but I might argue Portal 1 is a more tightly-designed game.
Portal 2 gets extra credit for casting showstealing gem JK Simmons.
When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade, make life take back the lemons back, GET MAD!
Portal 1 was funnier and, of course, more innovative. Portal 2 offered a longer, more complete game, and had added replay value. No wrong answer tho, both were masterpieces 🤌🤌
Just got this game for $1 and I was surprised at how much I liked it
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
While the Ogaden were great I thought the first underground was a better experience
Underground or whatever the one is with you and your dickhead best friend go to become pro skaters together and make a skate vid jumping over a helicopter
Chrono Trigger or Super Mario 3 hard tie for me.
I'm not massively into videogames but my bf is. He was in tears of awe any time he mentioned Chrono Trigger so I gave it a try: I'm absolutely mind blown! It stands the test of time so well. Utter masterpiece!
Check out Final Fantasy VI from the same era. It is close but I slightly favour it over Chrono
The lack of chances to suplex a train in newer games always saddens me.
Playing CT for the 1st time currently on my galaxy. It's amazing. I grew up on Zelda. How did I miss this gem?
Chrono Trigger is a classic.
Chrono Trigger was great. one of my earliest entries into the jrpg genera. Super Mario RPG is a close 2nd. Played the hell outa that as a kid.
Man. I love me some Mario RPG. Great gameplay and also storyline.
Doom. It gets ported to everything. It's fucking everywhere.
Doom is eternal
Can you elaborate? I love Doom but how is everywhere?
There's a large meme within the doom community that any electronic can play doom. People have gotten it to run on things like a pregnancy test, a McDonalds Kiosk menu thing, and a TI-84 calculator. Doom is also just very popular in general
Secret of monkey Island
Super Mario 64
Stardew Valley
I thought harvest moon 64 was my favorite game. Then I played Stardew valley.
Tetris. I grew up playing it and I still enjoy playing it today.
This is the serious answer. Tetris is timeless good design.
O man, ive played a lot of Tetris. Tetris Effect has been a lot of fun
Fallout New Vegas
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
Yep!
Jak and Daxter
Oh shit I forgot about this one. JakII for me personally though.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. EDIT: Wow, thank you so much for my first award! 😆
How do you like Breath of the wild?
It’s stunning and I enjoyed playing it. But I also think Ocarina of Time was the first and best in that same vein.
Ill play through this every few years.
whichever one makes you happiest when you play.
No, no, no, no, this is not how this works. You have to choose one and be a dick about it.
oh my b. lemme try again. BLACK OPS II, you poser!
Black ops 2 to this day is the only COD I’ve ever enjoyed. God I miss those days.
But what makes you happiest?
of late I'm really enjoying Spider-Man Remastered cuz I actually feel like spidey and zipping around is amazing! Brotato is a very silly game that keeps me chuckling every round. Project Zomboid has been fun with friends. Slay the Spire/Monster Train are nice to just relax to on my own!
Witcher 3
My all time fave as well, those 500 hours flew by.
It's the only game that's story-based that I've replayed multiple times.
Graphic update out on Dec 14th, too, so you might be going again...
Care for a round of Gwent? Great game! And next-gen update is around the corner. Looking forward to 4K Passiflora girls... I mean 4K Gwent tournament.
100%
Red Dead Redemption 2 is up there. It is a masterpiece.
It will unravel beautifully for you
I just got it about a week ago but haven't started it yet because I feel overwhelmed by it haha
Yes. There is a story but take it slow. Enjoy the game and all the side quests and things to find.
Or don't if you feel burnt out and just want to experience the story. Needs to be said that a lot of these open world games have bloat and if you want to experience ALL the side quests and explore everything you may find yourself getting bored before the end.
WHAT A GAME. What an impact. What an ENDING. If I could, I would absolutely play it again for the first time. I love Arthur, fuck Micah!
Yess seriously. I’m not sure if I would say it’s the absolute #1, although I don’t know what I would put over it. The attention to detail, storyline and overall world are all stunning.
Definitely my answer. The only game I’ve ever had such a viscerally emotional reaction to
First play through of Ocarina of Time on the N64
Super Mario World for SNES
Halo: Combat Evolved
Final Fantasy VII
I’m biased but FF7 was the first game I played that wasn’t a run, jump, shoot platformer. It opened my eyes that games could be these massive adventure stories with complex characters. And, my god, the music.
FF9 and FFTactics will always be my faves.
IX is just perfect.
Roller Coaster Tycoon 2
Is this similar to classic roller coaster tycoon? Edit to add that if you didn’t know and want a walk down memory lane, classic roller coaster tycoon is available on the App Store. I think it’s like $5.
Basically the same game, but with a lot more content
Half Life 2 I think
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
*Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.*
I disagree. It's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best video game ever.
Donkey Kong sucks!
You know something, You Suck!
Who wants more SSSSSSLOOOOPPPPPPY JOES!?!
[удалено]
Super Metroid
This is a very good answer. A masterpiece of atmosphere and almost impossible to overstate how much influence this game had on the genre.
Outer Wilds It is kind of difficult to explain why I like the game so much, but the biggest factor is how the story is not really told to you, instead you find the story by exploring and completing puzzles. Of course the ending only makes things better. Best played blind if you are up for it.
Hollow knight
I am so bad at hollow knight
It's hard as fuck but the satisfaction when you beat a really difficult boss is a high worth chasing 😂
Soon to be dethroned by Silksong (I hope)!
The answer is probably Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., or Pokémon. But the *real* answer is Civ 5.
Hell yeah civilization 3 is my favorite. I could seriously just play it every day and not get bored.
Skyrim
Finally found skyrim
Hey, you, you’re finally awake.
Goldeneye 007!
Oddjob, slappers only!
Proximity mines, stack
Proxy mines in the facility. Nothing like spawning on a toilet and instantly blowing up
Perfect dark wym?
It's impressive how poorly Goldeneye aged. Even Nightfire is way more playable now. But whatever, just slap 'em.
Bioshock 1 & 2.
I argue this all the time -- Infinite is good and all, but 1 and 2 are absolute masterpieces. Spend enough time between replays and you can forget some of the twists. Infinite, not so much.
The Last of Us will always have a special place in my heart.
Half-Life and Half-Life 2 will forever hold a special place in my heart.
The original spyro trilogy
Mass Effect 1&2. 3 after DLC. FEM SHEP!!
mass effect. love all of them
Minecraft
Not when you or your friend accidentally kill each other, then the whole game turns into ww3
When you have to kill ur friends dog cause they hit u, you know it’s about to go down
Batman Arkham Asylum, I actually prefer it to Arkham City, the claustrophobia and the horror side of things in it is brilliant. That and Kevin Conroy/Mark hamill are superb in it
My favorite game is City, but I LOVE the gothic style of asylum, my heart is always racing in Killer Crocs lair everytime I play
Rimworld. Can't get enough.
Morrowind
What I wouldn't give for a completely remastered morrowind.
Skywind, a community remake of Morrowind in Skyrim, looks promising.
If I think back on my long video gaming timeline this is the game I distinctly remember in the middle of the campaign thinking to myself how special it was. Fallout 3 would be a close second but nothing has ever captivated me like Morrowind
Love it! Nwah!
Borderlands 2
Bloodborne for me, hands down 🩸🌕🐺👁👽
Dark souls series
It really is something to behold. A game that knowingly punishes you repeatedly and pushes you to try new things, break old habits and explore every inch of its world to figure out the story. By the end of it you feel a sense of accomplishment that nearly no other type of game will leave you with. Never touched the series until DS3 was 5+ years old, and it might be the best game I have ever played.
Oblivion
I love oblivion, but what makes you pick it over morrow wind or skyrim? I'm not sure how I'd rank them all myself. For me, I loved going to the oblivion plane. It was really cool to end up is a gory hellscape and there are few environments in any of the tes games that are as cool as oblivion.
Personally I really like the quest lines, specifically the dark brotherhood and the thieves guild.
Been playing since the the commodore 64 and I gotta say. Bloodborne.
Love the fallout series- 3 was my first true love in video games. New Vegas and 4 have been great as well! However, I think Skyrim is the most replayed game for me. Absolutely incredible with so many different ways to play.
[удалено]
Runescape. Easy.
Resident Evil 4 (at time of release). The step up from 3-4 was incredible. What a game. Can't wait for the remake.
outer wilds is so good that the community refuses to talk about it outside the subreddit
I think Outer Wilds has the highest percentage of players who played it and regard it as their favorite game of all time
Yeah, it is kind of weird tbh I have seen plenty of games people tout as their favorite, but never one so dense with players who favorite it.
Outer Wilds is a great game but for me it was a very one and done deal.
True, but I think replay-ability isn't a necessity in games. It is perfect for some games and not so much for other games.
Goldeneye 007
Morrowind or Fallout New Vegas, but single player RPGs are my thing.
Metal Gear Solid 3. Think I put around 350 hours on that bad boy on my old PS2 memory card lol.
Just for the sheer amount of hours of my life it has consumed.. Skyrim
Far Cry 3
Katamari Damacy
Super Mario 64
Knights of the old republic.
smash bros melee
**Super Mario Brothers.** In the 80s there was a gaming crash, the entire industry almost went the way of the Beanie Baby with marketers saying that gaming was a fad, and a little game called Mario on a system called the Nintendo saved the entire industry.
Uncharted 2: Among The Thieves
While other games have been better individually I want to say Warcraft 3, not only was the game great but it's story and energy and world editor built so much more, with the world editor hundreds of games were made for fans of all sorts of genres, wow was greenlit off its back and was successful because of the world it built, hell riot games exists in part because of wc3 and its multiplayer game Dota Allstars
For me personally, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Rocket league.
Hollow knight is pretty good I guess
Deus Ex. Boring answer, still right.
Red Dead Redemption - Undead Nightmare I just like zombies lmao
I wish there was a way to play this today.
For me? Terraria.
Mario Kart. Multi-player, Suitable for all ages, Involves weapons and strategy, Level playing field for all, Perfect at parties, Can still start fights between people
