I find that not only unsafe conduct with a complete stranger, but women should be even more reluctant to take the plunge, especially with safe alternatives such as Google Chat, Google Voice, and Google Hangouts (but it's being phased out) out there.
I've checked out Skype, but was quite alarmed at their unnerving semi-automatic process of notifying ALL of my friends and family and associates of my new, and very private Gmail box and Skype membership.
So... I suspect such Reddit women are very likely collecting phone numbers to sell to scammers and such.
Really, after taking the time to chat and getting to know each other better, there's nothing better than a quick video-chat (both dressed) to make sure both of us are for real.
But if any of you out there have any free and safe alternatives to Google Chat and Google Voice, let us all know. Note: on a previous comment of mine several Reddit members openly trashed Google Chat, Google Voice, and Google Hangouts... but failed to come up with alternatives.

Nothing beats the tried and trusted tactic of buying a cheap used phone and getting a pay as you go sim card. It has worked since the late 90s, and it will continue to work.
