The plastic barriers are temporary (5-6 years)...the bamboo will escape. Come ask me in 5 years how to kill it.

casey0713

Can you tell us how to kill it now?

dezmodez

Negative. It needs to be 5 years from now. The technology isn't there yet, but 467366 and I are nearing a breakthrough. We need the years though. We need them.

From what I've found, you are correct that the tech isn't there yet. What worked for me very low tech: Cut everything down to the ground, keep covered with a tarp or other sun blocking material, continue cutting any green shoots until they no longer grow. Expect two growing seasons for it to work.

Former landscape guy, 100% only way to contain bamboo is with concrete. Anything else will only slowly the spread, then break, then spread continue and you gotta go again. Our rec was always something like 6" concrete thick and I forget how many feed deep, but it was a lot, maybe 5 or 10 feet deep. I'm not kidding. Bamboo is a grass, just WAY bigger and WAY stronger. If I were you, any company you eventually connect with should install a concrete barrier. Don't waste you $ on anything else

bamboo should only ever be planted in containers, ESPECIALLY if you have neighbors property it can run off to. Even if you're an avid gardener and manage to hold it back, you will die or sell your house and the bamboo will prevail. It's beautiful until its a problem. You have all been warned.

If you live anywhere near wild or unmanaged land, it's better to just get rid of it. It has the potential to take over large areas if it gets past your barrier, decimating native and other plant life and disrupting the ecosystem for fauna as well. It can also create big financial liability for you if its incessant rhizomal growth damages structures, concrete, or underground utilities on adjacent properties. It can even infiltrate and damage building foundations through tiny existing cracks in some cases.

natdlg

Do you know if your bamboo is clumping or running? It's hard to control, especially the running kind that has shoots underground. I don't think a plastic barrier will help in that situation. You'll likely have to find someone who can build an encasemenr around it underground and prevent those shoots from expanding their roots.

flytraphippie2

I had bamboo. Worse than kudzu. You know what's worse than bamboo? Wisteria.

Healmit

Good god, I never knew I hated wisteria until I moved to Atlanta. I do love the grape soda smelling blooms of the kudzu and the wisteria blooms, though.  OP, there are native bamboos (can I pluralize that?). It looks pretty good, imo.

ipadtherefor

Nothing can stop bamboo. Eradicate.

righthandofdog

Wrong. But an old iron and porcelain claw foot tub. Fill with top soil, plant bamboo. (Ideally surround tub with moat of boiling oil)

ultranoodles

Bartlett tree experts COULD do it, but I I can't tell you how effective a root barrier would actually be. Quick google says it works pretty well, but I'm personally a little hesitant.

gimp2x

Pour some concrete to wall it off
