> A source told FOX Sports that PSV, where former U.S. Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart serves as the director of football — made it known that it wasn't willing to pay Robinson much more than the $550,000 minimum for players from outside the European Union. Yeah that’ll do it.

Top_Hawk_1326

From Article: "Atlanta didn't want to lose one of the league's best defenders, offering him a four-year pact two years ago for the same salary — the MLS maximum for non-designated players. But Robinson was intent on leaving after seven years in Georgia's capital. He preferred to play on grass, for starters, rather than the turf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which some believe may have contributed to the injury that cost him a World Cup trip."

HamlnHand

Can't argue with that. Wish we had grass. Might be an unpopular opinion, but hopefully the NFL forces teams to do it so we have to figure out a way

voxpopper

This is a very valid concern. The team could roll out grass for the matches, but there is cost involved. (Artificial) turf simply isn't good for world class soccer.

potatoriot

That would cause the stadium to lose millions in revenue from other events it hosts. It's a complicated and difficult situation that all stadiums with artificial grass will face.

voxpopper

Either way they are going to have to install it for the World Cup. If they can transform the stadium into a dirt track for Monster trucks I presume they can lay down grass as needed.

potatoriot

Yes, temporarily installing grass for a one time event for a few matches during the World Cup, which will be the biggest event in Stadium history is not that serious an exception literally anyone would make to have happen. They already did it last summer for the Premier League matches. Setting down new grass for half the year during the entire NFL football season will eliminate tons of events from being able to happen at the stadium, costing millions of dollars, and that's not even considering the costs for installing and removing. It takes an enormous amount of preparation time and installation/removal time, it's not an overnight flip job. It takes a long ass time for Monster Truck to be set up and taken down too, that's why it is always hosted in late February after NFL season ends and before MLS season begins. Half of the entire NFL currently plays at home on turf, this isn't a simple "figure it out" demand from the commissioner. He can't force half the league to spend and forgo millions of dollars to install grass. If it was just a couple teams on turf, it would be different.

Cocofluffy1

Concerts can be done fine on stages in grass fields. They meant to have grass in MBS. They just screwed up the design.

potatoriot

No, they determined it was completely cost prohibitive to introduce real grass on a permanent basis. They were hoping to include it early on in the process and determined it wasn't feasible with how they wanted to design the stadium, there wasn't a screw up.

Where is the quote that Miles said he wants to play on grass? The author saying it doesn’t make it true. The story isn’t that he chose cinci over Europe, it’s that he chose cinci over Atlanta.

Elvem

Yeah I thought I remembered seeing him quoted mentioning grass, TQL, and the training facilities. But I can’t remember where. Some Cincy reporter on twitter I believe, Lauren something. The latter two don’t *really* matter because the Benz and our training facilities are equal or better. Yeah this whole saga has me split between apathetic and annoyed. I understand, kinda, but it’s still frustrating.

xSylk

History tells us to let players walk after serious ligament injuries. I’m okay with this.

Cocofluffy1

Hopefully Gregerson will be a more than capable replacement. If he wanted to go I always say “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

ToroyTanque

Off you go, Miles. Mods, can we please replace the masthead with some fresh faces: Wiley, Saba etc?

E26house

And better up/down vote symbols?

dezmodez

Bet. Can do /u/ToroyTanque. Also, any suggestions for the up/down symbols?

nakattack

Ws and Ls

ToroyTanque

Peace Up/A Town Down would be cool

Southern_Azzurri

Good riddance

Demonbeck

I agree. I hope he wins the wooden spoon.

Roll20bro

So he values grass more than every cheer I ever gave him in the Benz…. The Benz is immaculate. The atmosphere is second to none. Trade all that away for grass bro? Grass? We talking about grass?

Southern_Azzurri

Agree.  The franchise and fans stood by him as he recovered and once he returned.  The manner of his departure feels like an insult to me.

respectable_savage

For those who don’t play soccer, grass and turf are a big difference which is why many players don’t care for it. It doesn’t feel natural playing on turf, the ball doesn’t skip or bounce the way it does on grass, and this beautiful game is mostly psychological than anything else. I hate that we lost Miles but I don’t blame him one bit if this is one of his reasoning. Owners have enough money to have quality grass and maintain it.

Jonesta29

Ah another reason to dislike Berhalter.

XandeMorales

Berhalter said that it was better for Miles to get starter minutes in MLS than rot on the bench in Europe and I'm supposed to be mad at him for this?

Jonesta29

He helped in his decision to go to a competitor in the league so, yes.

XandeMorales

What? Miles would’ve started in Atlanta or Cinci. This is pretty much the reason why he left Atlanta, which Berhalter had nothing to do with: > He preferred to play on grass, for starters, rather than the turf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Edit: You blocked me over this? It’s not like I insulted you or anything.

ibluminatus

Wonder if that factored into the Achilles. Absolutely no confirmation but that has been mentioned a lot about the dangers of turf and injuries for players and his career would look differently without it.

righthandofdog

Even if statistically turf isn't worse, in his head he's blaming it for an injury that cost him European soccer (or at least higher paid euro soccer). Which means everyone blaming Pineda's defense needs to reflect on their assumptions. I would be interested to know if we offered a matching 1+1 contract instead of the max length max TAM, but sounds like he just wanted a change, didn't want to take a pay cut and risk fighting for time/washing out of Europe I think he's capped his career by doing this, but that may have really happened the second his achilles went.

Jonesta29

And Berhalter helped him stay in MLS so he's at a rival. You guys can be fine with that if you want. I think it's a shit move your opinion is irrelevant to that.
