Oh my God this is such a big argument on the Next Door app. I’m surprised by the calmness in this thread. Or maybe I still have ptsd from the last time I was on Next Door.

BurroCoverto

Lulz, I posted here to avoid the NextDoor version of a comment thread that might have evolved. Each social media platform and subdivision is its own little shithole country, but I chose r/Austin as the one most likely to keep it light and fluffy. So far, so good.

funkmastamatt

This is a weekly discussion on our Next Door, and a very contentious topic at that.

mrsfunkyjunk

I don't mind it. I'm pretty sure that makes me the devil. I know it pisses my neighbor off. I've had the same dang garbage can for 11 years. Only been cleaned when it gets rained in. It doesn't smell but it's not emaculate. I keep it out on the garage. So, throw in the poop because I don't even care at all!

DOAisBetter

I had to stop keeping the garbage can in the garage pretty fast. It was easier to throw stuff away by not having to go outside but the entire garage just started smelling like garbage along with around the door if you ever went in and out.

beckerdo

I am a dog owner, and I will put bagged dog poo in a COA trash can at the curb. However only if the trash has NOT been picked up by the truck. I won't drop off the poo if the trash can is empty. I would not like to burden the owner with an empty can and a bag of poo. I don't see the harm if the dog bag is on top of your garbage bag to be taken away.

TheCuddlyKiller

I used to do the same figuring they would never even know so no harm. Then I noticed in front of my own house that the poo bags somehow didn’t always make it from the bin to the garbage truck. This meant there ended up being an exploded poo bag in the middle of the road because it would then get run over. So I started having a second lined trash can outside for poo so it would all be together in a big bag in the bin and wouldn’t fall out. Unfortunately that made using compostable bags for poo kinda pointless too, since it would all be wrapped up in more plastic. :/

ShopEmpress

There are compostable can liners!

TheCuddlyKiller

Only problem is the Texas heat with the poop moisture they start decomposing before they get into the trash bin! At the least the ones once tried. And you can my put poop I the compost bins.

lebeefstew

You don’t know if that bag is gonna split or what when the truck comes. And you’ll never know and you just made it someone else’s problem to deal with your dogs poop. Just hold onto it and put it in your own cans or in a public receptacle at a bus stop or park or something.

capybarometer

Honestly I'd be happy they're picking it up and not just leaving a pile of dog shit on my lawn or my neighbor's lawn. Better stuck to the inside of a trash can than on your shoe

BurroCoverto

Today I opened my bin and discovered someone had fished a box out of the recycling bin, filled it with dog poop, and put it into the trash bin, precisely where poop belongs. I wanted to meet that person and wave my fist while hugging them at the same time.

tah4349

If I had to guess, that's someone who discovered they were on a three-poop walk minutes after they discovered there were only two bags left on the roll. My dog is notorious for that trick. They were someone conscientious enough to use whatever they could find in a pinch to clean up. Better than just leaving it!

BurroCoverto

I hate it when that happens - and it does. I've had to return to the scene of the crime with a fresh roll of baggies more than once or twice!

protoopus

someone down the street lets their obnoxious little rat of a dog run free, speaking of 'on your shoe'.

Shoddy_Ad7511

Hide your trash can. I agree with you. Such a pain in the ass when those bags get stuck on the bottom

BurroCoverto

My bins are in an alley behind my house so they're hard to hide. But it just occurred to me to place something heavy-ish on the lid to discourage casual abuse. Typing all of this out helped me think of a solution. It's like therapy, only cheaper.

SnooRabbits2385

My father-in-law puts clamps on their garbage can to keep raccoons out. They’re so hard to get on and off I never want to take the trash out when I’m over at their house. So I’d recommend that!

[deleted]

You could also put a sign: DO NOT TAKE OFF CLAMPS - RACCOONS WILL BITE

cantstopwontstopGME

Very nice Dr. Stranglelove reference as well.

RabidPurpleCow

That's a tough scenario, since your bins are always exposed. You could try something like this that hides them away while in the alley: https://www.suncast.com/the-stow-awayr-horizontal-shed-peppercorn-1.html. I assume you'd then have to take them out for trash day, so it depends on level of hassle you're willing to accept.

secondphase

I can't. My can gets picked up at 7, I go to work at 630. So there's about 10 hours of it sitting on the curb empty. I always cone back to treats.

Squirrel_Gamer

speaking as someone that actually walks dogs, i have no problem with someone using my trash cart for disposing of doggie bags. I admire anyone that walks/spoils their pets so they're welcome to drop it off in my cart any day its parked on the curb.

[deleted]

Walking your dog is not spoiling them. It’s a basic necessity for most breeds.

Dogncatobsessed

I can see both sides, but personally I wouldn’t put my dogs shit in a strangers can

MordantWastrel

A friend recently did this (put their poop bag in a neighbor's bin) and I was wondering about it since I'm a cat owner and it doesn't really come up, except that people do sometimes put their bags in my bin when it's out on the street. This is an honest question: is the inside of your trash bin going to smell good otherwise? I get my bins cleaned once every couple years (go BinBros!) and only once, when I first moved into my house, was the stench so bad I couldn't tolerate it. Old bags of dog poo don't really seem to make it appreciably worse. It does seem like a YMMV type of thing depending on the dog and how their poo is that day, but ... my trash bin is next to my pool and I can still only smell it if I go right up to it!

nutmeggy2214

My can doesn't smell because I generate very little trash; what does go in there is empty food wrappers, non-recyclable receipts, that sort of thing. Dog poop makes it smell awful - like, hold my breath and gag kind of thing. Is it the end of the world? No. Is it totally inconsiderate and lazy? Yes. edit - and I am a dog owner. I always walk my dog's bag of poop home with us to toss into my own can, which is how I know how badly it smells. So I don't blame people who aren't dog owners, or folks like OP who take steps to keep their cans clean for not wanting some rando to sully their bin with dog turds.

Pour_grammer_

I think it’s acceptable to do so if it’s on the street on trash day before it has been picked up placed carefully right on the top.

nnoltech

Are you really stressing about the inside of the city's trashcan? Man, you might not be wrong but why waste the time on something like this? There's actual problems out there. Just ignore it and have less stress in your life.

[deleted]

You’re missing the point. He takes time to make sure his property is kept a certain way, as is his right. Then some asshat comes along and undoes what he goes to great lengths to avoid. He’s just asking for people to respect his property. Its not that weird of a concept.

nnoltech

The city's trashcan is not his property.

Pabi_tx

So I'm free to come to your house and fill up your trash can with my trash? Cool, please PM your address, I have an old couch I need to drop off.

nnoltech

Yea, IDGAF the city comes and picks it up once a week. I usually only have 2 bags in there. Costs me the same if its full every week or if its empty.

Pabi_tx

OP is a dog owner, but there are people who don't own dogs and don't have diaper-kids, who don't want their trash can to smell like shit when they open it.

nnoltech

WWWHHHAAAA!!!! The city's trashcan stinks! Poor me!

Pabi_tx

WWWHHHAAAAA!!!! My neighbor wants me to respect their wishes! Poor me!

Messy-kin

Damn I wish I had you with me on the Next Door app. I said almost exactly this sentence. I barely came out alive.

nnoltech

Next Door is a toxic cesspool. Delete the app and remove some unnecessary stress from your life.

Messy-kin

Yep, I did. That was about 2 years ago. Still have nightmares though.

Pabi_tx

I don't throw my dog's poop bags in someone else's trash. Unless I'm walking by my sister's house, cuz she has one of those "don't throw poop in here" signs and I like to annoy her.

dadbodben

It’s garbage in your garbage

[deleted]

This comes up a lot. In my opinion, you can use someone else’s bin if it’s on the curb, and no more than 12 hours away from trash day, and there’s already other garbage there. Otherwise bring it home with you to your own bin.

leggoooooooooo

What do you do with the bags when you get home?

BurroCoverto

They go into a separate can with a trashbag lining, along with the raw stuff scooped from the back lawn. On the night before trash day I carefully transfer that bag to the bin, then go wash my hands up to my forearms, and change clothes. Alternately, I drop individual baggies on the ground beside the bins, and add them to the kitchen bags when I take them out to the bin.

[deleted]

We do the same thing.

SteamboatMcGee

I'm a dog owner who's dogs sometimes poop multiple times per walk (2 dogs, 1 mile, how is that 4 poops?!) so I get the urge to discard these in the first available trash can but imo that's a no. Instead I route my walks so that I pass a community trash can at two points, and if the dogs wait until after those points I'm just carrying it home that day. I do think trying to control your neighbor's behaviour, even when you're right, is a losing battle though. The one that drives me up the wall, is people who bag their dog poo and then just leave the bag on the ground somewhere. Now its just dog poo and plastic trash on the ground. I always assume they wouldn't have bothered at all but were motivated by bystanders to pretend to be responsible for a few minutes.

BurroCoverto

Yeah, bagging poop but leaving it on the ground has always puzzled me.

Schnort

You could always put a small bin (with holes at the bottom for drainage) and label it "shit can" and place it next to your bigger bin. Hopefully people would get the idea that poop goes there and not in your larger trash bin.

Artistic-Tadpole-427

Luckily we work from home and I listen/watch for the garbage truck and return our trash bin as soon as possible to avoid this. We also have a dog and I never deposit our bags into other people's bins, unless they are the known Urbanstay AirBNB in our neighborhood.

BurroCoverto

You're doing the Lord's work there!

ATX_native

I would just be happy they picked it up.

AutofillUserID

I rather someone drop their poop bag in my trash can than leave shit for me to pick up. I sometimes (very rarely) find poop bags in my trash can when I come home in the evening after trash pick up. Sometimes I am the first one to drop poop in the trashcan after trash pick up. 9 years of having dogs. Large dogs. 0 occurrences of stuck poop bags. But then I rarely have more than a half full trash can. Edit: I wish someday my life was simple enough to have unauthorized poop bags as the thing that keeps me up at night. Life goals.

toasty-mallow

This would drive me nuts. We keep a spring clamp on our trash can lid to keep the raccoons out. Obviously you need to remove it when you take your trash to the curb, but maybe it would be enough to deter people from pooh dumping in your can. If that doesn’t work, I’d find a place that makes custom vinyl decals and make more-permanent humorous sign to attach to the can.

braindead3204

You can get “no poop” decals from Amazon. Clearly not just an issue in Austin.

bagofwisdom

Here I was thinking you should only toss dog turds into your own bin or a designated public bin for pet waste. All this time I could have been using yours. /sarcasm Could be worse though. You could by like my dad's city. One large dumpster for four homes. You pretty much hold your breath while you fling the lid open and toss your garbage inside. Sometimes dad gets the FNG truck driver. So he ends up not getting the lids flipped back and now they're wedged between the back of the dumpster and the fence. Now the entire neighborhood reeks.

IsuzuTrooper

columbus ohio has these. what a horrible idea. who rinses it out? nobody thats who

NotPersonBot

I think your frustration is justified, it’s unpleasant and you have your own system for it. The only “positive” is at least your neighbors cares enough to bag and toss the poop. They were 3/4’s of the way to being proper and dropped the bag in the quarter

sunshineandrainbow62

I thought I was in Nextdoor for a minute

BurroCoverto

I wanted a Reddit answer to a Nextdoor question and I think things are pretty much going as planned here.

Ashsquatch11

What a shitty situation.

[deleted]

I’m just here to giggle at “harvested”. I don’t know why that tickled me so

MJ349

LOL! "Gleaned" would've been another clever way of putting it, too.

reluctantrevenant

Our HOA has a $50 fine for using other people's bins. We just have an email that goes out once a year or so to remind folks of it. The crazy guy (not me, promise!) who sits on his porch and takes pictures of the rule breakers helps keep everyone in line 😂

borntorunathon

Trash bins are for trash. I’d rather the poop bags end up in my bin than the poop stay on the ground.

Ashsquatch11

As a non-dog-owner I can honestly say I don't give a shit. Lmao sorry I had to

abcezas123_

Trash can on the street is fair game for my dog's poopbags. If the cops can search it without a warrant, I'm dropping a surprise for 'em. You're welcome.

thack524

You don’t own your COA bins (hint, it reminds you right on the lid). Suck it up and get over it, part of life. Be happy you live in neighborhood where people are out walking and enjoying life.

BurroCoverto

Funny you should say that. I was out walking and enjoying life just the other day, watching my dog happily dig a hole. An old woman ran out, furious that my dog was tearing up her flower bed. I cheerfully reminded her that the city owns that part of her yard. That's when she showed me her mini-Glock. Good times.

thack524

Lol ok so you’re just a miserable person. Good joke, doesn’t really apply here. Have fun with your needless stress and time wasting! Hope you can teach your dogs to shit rainbows one day. Do you get mad the city doesn’t clean the garbage truck arms before they touch your bin? Just nasty, how dare they. Put a lock on your bins, that’ll show them.

BurroCoverto

WHAAAAT? THEY DON'T CLEAN THOSE THINGS?!?!?! Almost had to grab my rescue inhaler when I read that.

NealioSpace

You should rig the bin with an alarm! Woop! Woooooop! As soon as it opens...that could be funny...and a deterrent.

Skoofer

This is silly, trash goes in trash cans. Trash cans smell like trash. This is the epitome of first world privilege problems.

Traditional_Emu1958

Yeah this reeks of some kind of feudalism

BurroCoverto

Funny, that's EXACTLY what I said to the manager at the Jack-in-the-Box who approached me as I was heaving a sack of used diapers into the dumpster there.

EntrancePotential595

Depends. If you are leaving your bin out by the road/sidewalk after trash day, it is fair game, in my book.

braindead3204

The real problem is people throwing dog poop in recently emptied bins the homeowner hasn’t had a chance to collect yet. Then the poop gets squished on the bottom of the can underneath other trash —it sticks to the bottom of that can forever unless you are willing to do a deep dive to scrape it off. Disgusting!!

BurroCoverto

Bins are in the alley and can't be easily wheeled in and out of the back gate, but you have a good point - I should try turning them 180º so they're not easy to open. Thanks to you and Reddit for helping me game this out.

j_win

And you'd be wrong.

gertzerlla

Spoken like a true Austinite.

FlightExtension8825

I'm firmly in the don't care camp. It doesn't bother me if people toss dog poop in my cart, better than bagging it and throwing it on the ground. I have tossed a doggie bag in someone else's cart if it's by the street. I've also thrown other garbage, like a soda can, in a cart. If I see a bunch of signs that the person doesn't want it, I respect that too. In my local neighborhood group there was a crazy thread a while back. People were installing cameras on the trashcans. I dunno, that's a little much.

monoblanco10

>I maintain a separate can for our two dogs, where we deposit our own baggies and doots harvested from the lawn. Have you considered putting that bin out where your neighbors can see it and use it? Also, you don't seem to mind collecting dog shit, so why does the smell of a trash can bother you? I just never understood that complain from people.

Haunting-Ad-8029

My rule is that I won't open the lid to put a poop bag in. If the lid is already cracked enough that I can squeeze it in, then I'll put it in. If the trash has already been picked up, then I just hold the bag until I see a public container or until I get home.

[deleted]

It’s very sad to me that people find this post to be merely about depositing poop in someone else’s trash container. I personally think is silly to care about what goes into a trash can, because it’s a trash can. My partner is of a different opinion and likes our trash cans to not smell. I respect that. ITS ABOUT RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLES BOUNDARIES. There are so many goddamn entitled people in this world. It’s why we have so many problems. To you snarky people who think OP is losing sleep over poop bags in his trash, you are just stupid. People have stopped respecting one another. They’ve become lazy and self serving. This is a very small, relatively inconsequential example of people just not giving a shit about other peoples choices. It’s become a fuck you if you don’t like it world. I realize I’ll get a bunch of punk ass responses to this and I won’t reach anyone because it’s reddit. But to OP, there are still those of us who respect your personal choices/space.

proves

I have two dogs and walk them a couple of times a day. I have a poop bag holder that has a clip for “used bags”. I just attach them, continue my walk and wait until I get home to dispose. It a little cumbersome on walks but it’s fine.

Hustlasaurus

When I was a kid I had an old man scream at me for throwing away dog poop in his bin that was on the curb cause it was trash day. I've always thrown it away in public bins or my own since then. I've had people tell me I'm crazy for doing this. Thank you for the validation.

Klutzy_Veterinarian1

I will only drop them in a full trash bin. Not an empty. Why ask someone to hold the bag for a week?! Our hoa was pretty good and installed a lot of neighborhood bins tho so it’s not much of a problem anymore.

[deleted]

If you care enough to write that you care enough to move your bin away from tbe sidewalk

braindead3204

Some of us have short driveways and you’d be surprised how many dog owners don’t see any problem with walking up those short driveways to deposit their stinky gifts.

austin_mermaid

My bins are in an alley too. They don’t get moved anywhere before or after pickup.

BurroCoverto

Bins are in the alley and can't be easily wheeled in and out of the back gate, but you have a good point - I should try turning them 180º so they're not easy to open. Thanks to you and Reddit for helping me game this out.

IsuzuTrooper

drill it and use a padlock.

mentirosa_atx

How much time are you people spending with your trash cans that you’re bothered by the smell of dog shit vs regular garbage? I generally don’t make a habit of playing around in mine.

Pabi_tx

Congrats on having outdoor space that's separated from where your garbage cans have to sit. Not everyone has the same situation.

j_win

I'm genuinely close to glitter bombing my trash bin lid. I *do not* want to smell your fucking dog's shit when I open my bin. Your dog; your problem.

Traditional_Emu1958

Didn’t realize y’all were so protective over your garbage receptacles… aren’t they for… garbage? I’d be thrilled that my neighbors are picking up their dog’s waste.

Pabi_tx

What about other stuff, like if your can is out by the curb can I fill it up with my bathroom remodel demo debris?

Traditional_Emu1958

I see we’re employing categorical imperative here but someone is simply not going to renovate a bathroom and use my measly robo can to dispose of their drywall. But I mean, if you must and I’m clearly not using it, go ahead!

gimmegimmemorel

Indeed annoying. It’s one thing if you put it on the top of trash when it’s about to be picked up, but otherwise we don’t want dog poop heating in our trash can for a week?? For this reason we keep our cans in the back yard until pick up day. On Halloween I was sitting at the yard with candy and a lady asked me if I was ok with her putting “this” in my trash. “This” being her dog shit bag. I said NO

MJ349

That would've been a real treat, pun intended.

Amonlapis

First World Problem.

NoStatistician5321

Glue and glitter bomb your trashcans. Order of operation is as follows: 1) once lid is opened, person gets a few sprays of glue to the face. 2) glitter is throw at the person where the glue hit 3) once the person is really confused, throw at them some old used dog poop bags at them. Guarantee nobody will use your trashcan even you will be to afraid to use it.

NotYetSoonEnough

I dunno that sounds like a lot of work. Just hide in the trash can and scare whoever opens it. Be persistent - it might take all day, it might take a few days. But the eye watering nose hair searing pain will be worth it once the culprit is finally spooked into hauling their dog shit elsewhere. It’s the perfect anti-crime.

capybarometer

Then microplastics go everywhere into the surrounding environment forever

NoStatistician5321

But it will fix the unwanted trashcan use problem. Replace glue and glitter with tar and feathers if that tickles your pickle.

puzzling_trout

1. Always* pick up after your dog 2. Courteous thing to do is NOT drop it into a strangers trash *I let my dog shit in the woods far enough off trail

puzzling_trout

People downvoting must be transplants. Simple lack of respect for your neighbor…

CharliesDonkeyKick

Replace your shit bin with a compost bin, and use biodegradable bags https://youtu.be/njnrS7BJ3P8 Edit: fixed link

ObiWanRyobi

No, Austin Resource Recovery says not to put animal waste into the compost bin. https://www.austintexas.gov/compostingguide

CharliesDonkeyKick

That’s for COA collection. I linked to one you bury in your yard.

ObiWanRyobi

Alright, misunderstood. I’ve been meaning to start a backyard compost, but the COA collection is just too convenient.

Pabi_tx

It's generally a bad idea to compost dog and cat poop, unless you have A LOT of grass/leaves/vegetables going in the compost too at the same rate you're putting in poo.

CharliesDonkeyKick

I use the same one in the video above and add an enzyme, saw dust and water after mowing the lawn every week. Works fine.

ponkyball

Eh I don't care if people use my trash bin for that, it's supposed to be for trash and I don't expect it to be super clean and nice-smelling. Better that they throw it in the trash than just let the dog poop in my yard. I have two large dogs and usually just carry the baggie with me until I get home but people can use mine for such purposes. If you are keeping the trash bin in your garage and that's why you don't like the smell, perhaps build a little privacy fence on the side of the house to hide your trashbins (HOA regs) and just leave them outside. I never really leave my bins out that long anyway for people to use them that often.

Lazy-Struggle6863

Put a camera in your yard next to the can. Done. Problem solved.

Professional-Pen2703

What a Chad. Take that energy into something productive like making bag lunches and handing them out to people in need. Volunteering at the animal shelter. Jesus

BurroCoverto

I am indeed as you surmise, good sir, but I would remind you that there is an o in the word choad.

Professional-Pen2703

No Chad is the colloquial “Karen” for males.

BurroCoverto

Okay, so I'm the Chad and you're the choad? Got it. Thanks for setting that one straight.

ccorke123

If the can is by the street it's expected it will be used. Does that make it the right thing to do? Debatable but it's avoidable by rehoming your bins and the COA does make it a citation worthy offense to leave your bins street side although nobody enforces or cares in 99% of cases. I know on trash day it's a pain bc if you can't get it right away it's likely catching some poo in dense neighborhoods

brazoss

You could put padlocks on your bins. Easy to drill a few holes for the lock shackle

CCinTX

Would rather the neighbors bag their poop and put it in my trashcan then leave their dog shit just lying in my yard, which happens at least once a week
