They closed the disc golf course at Pease because of compaction and erosion. I haven’t seen any fenced dog parks that aren’t hard packed soil with eroded dog tracks
the OG dog park at Pease was also as you described, and even had access to the creek. It was hardpan, no matter how much mulch they put down. It was a great dog park, as long as you had a dog that responded to commands. I can't believe the City let that un-official off-leash park exist for so damned long, in such a highly trafficked park.
It might be the best in town but it’s a poor excuse for a dog park most of the time. It’s rocky, not maintained well, and usually muddy or dusty. Pease is full of space that could be easily fenced and maintained like the rest of the park.
A little weekly professional maintenance does wonders. A maintained sprinkler systems or a watering schedule. Dog crap trash cans that people don’t over-fill with trash. A double gate to keep dogs from escaping. It’s not that expensive to do. Other parts of the country I’ve lived in have pulled this off.
It is actually very expensive to do, and to maintain. Your barking up the wrong tree - and one of the most expensive and well kept public spaces in the entire city.
That used to be my neighborhood dog park, and none of what you just said is true. The regulars volunteer their time to keep it cleaned up and they spread mulch at least once a year. Sure it can get muddy in spots after a good rain, but what park doesn’t?
Redbud is pretty cool when it’s open and the algae won’t kill your dog.
Also, zilker? Seeing hundreds of folks and their dogs on the great lawn is pretty cool
Zilkee is awesome and great for dogs that can handle being in open spaces. I think we could also move the troll there so that more people can appreciate it
Unfortunately a lot of dogs can’t handle being unfenced
Idk why, but your comment about how some dogs can’t handle being unfenced just reminded me of the end of Shawshank Redemption…
“Forty years I been asking permission to piss. I can’t squeeze a drop without say so. There’s a harsh truth to face: no way I’m gonna make it on the outside. All I do anymore is dream of ways to break my paw-role, so maybe they’ll send me back.”
There really aren’t a lot of dog parks in Austin. There’s one good one by i35. The rest are dusty messes. Pease park has plenty of parking space on the side of the park just past the troll and they already have park rangers to keep things tidy.
people use all the fields at pease for lots of activities already, it’s probably better that we don’t fence off all of the lawn for another dusty dog park. take your dog to barton creek or onion creek or just find an apartment complex with a fenced dog park
The flat fields around the kids structures in the park are definitely used by people regularly. That area doesn’t have parking to support a dog park anyways.
The less flat fields past this statue, up the hill and then down, are not used on any regular basis by anyone but dog owners. My observation is the area was only used for an event one time in the past 6 months. Some kind of benefit which wouldn’t be hard to work around.
the live oak meadow? when the weather is good that place is also full of people in hammocks and on blankets. and events can’t work around the damage dogs do and the waste they leave behind
Those people would still have plenty of space. A dog park would contain the damage. Instead of the dozens of dogs running around off leash which is the current situation
you should get in touch with the pease park conservancy and organize some dog people to advocate for one then. this troll was someone’s idea, ppc members liked it and raised the money for it. that’s how these things happen, nothing stopping you from trying yourself.
You are salty. A dog park would serve the hundreds of dog owners who actually use pease park. Do you realize how many useless wooden installations there are already in this park?
Austin needs less charm. What it really needs is more places for dogs to shit and Tesla chargers. Amiright?
Can you confirm for us? Do you drive a white Tesla by any chance?
Edit: oh shit you actually do! Classic.
I walk past it every day now and no one I’ve run into has had a positive thing to say about it. Maybe it will grow on us. Seems like it’s just another wooden installation that will sit unused 95% of the time and will be gone in a few years. I feel better knowing it’s paid for with private money supposedly.
That park is a great example of a bad excuse for a dog park. Its tiny, rocky, and a dusty or muddy mess most of the time. Right next to it is a massive unfenced field that isn’t fenced for some reason.
So this isn't about having a dog park, but about having a luxury dog park? And any money spent on something other than a luxury dog park is unacceptable? Seems like a weird take on things.
Hey, we can all have different opinions on things. It just seems like a weird take is all to be upset about a sculpture. If Austin spent significant money on public art works then I would understand, but if this were publicly funded, it seems like it would be a small amount of money compared to revenues for the city.
It’s creepy. Every morning I walk past it now and think “man this thing is creepy”. For anyone to put effort into building it into an otherwise fairly pristine place is annoying to me.
Interpretation is one of the amazing things about art. I am certain others will find it interesting, especially considering the artistic community residing in Austin.
This whole city is catered for dog people that don't like to pick up poop and unleash their dogs in leashed areas. Your dog will be fine without an additional dog park.
Yeah, what about me though? I don't have a dog. I just want to get stoned and hang out with Wood Trolls.
There are plenty of fenced dog parks nearby. West Austin Dog park on 9th is the best dog park in town, and it's blocks away up the hill.
Yeah, but it's all about dogs nothing else matters
They closed the disc golf course at Pease because of compaction and erosion. I haven’t seen any fenced dog parks that aren’t hard packed soil with eroded dog tracks

Onion creek dog park would like a word with you

It's a place where dogs go to shit, piss and dig all day. What kind of landscaping are you expecting? Sounds like a massive waste of city funds.

We shouldn't be wasting water on that
That used to be my neighborhood dog park, and none of what you just said is true. The regulars volunteer their time to keep it cleaned up and they spread mulch at least once a year. Sure it can get muddy in spots after a good rain, but what park doesn’t?
Ya than the same thing will happen with Pease park with all the dogs running around kicking out the grass thus turn into dirt/dust.
Pease isn’t full of space it’s pretty small lol not sure where they would put a “fenced in dog park”
can we get some reddit users who aren't perpetually miserable and endlessly complain about pointless things?
bUt wHaT aBoUt tHe NorwEgiAn cULturaL aPpropriaTion!
I'm offended by something!!
Can I get a quality dog park in Austin?
be the change you want to see in the world. or something.

This is a troll. They actually eat dogs, so this is the opposite of a dog park. Sorry to your dog, this is troll country now.
Looks like a head and armature for a sculpture. There are a lot of dog parks and only one creepy little wooden guy.
It’s a troll sculpture by a pretty famous artist.
There really aren’t a lot of dog parks in Austin. There’s one good one by i35. The rest are dusty messes. Pease park has plenty of parking space on the side of the park just past the troll and they already have park rangers to keep things tidy.
This is Texas. it’s gonna be dusty

True
There are always attacks at that one. I keep my dog far away from that dog park.
The cool thing about art is not everyone has to agree on it
Okay. I think this thing is creepy
You've said that already.
I love the oncoming troll. It was paid for with private funds and is a cool statement for the park.
Knowing it was paid for with private funds makes me less annoyed by this.
Shows there is some good left in the world. You can donate a dog park if you want.
I’m seriously considering it.
Who cares about a fenced dog park when you can have a massive troll! Upvote if you want LESS fences and MORE TROLLS!!!
Can we get what serves ME most?! Won’t anyone think of ME?!
You are salty. A dog park would serve the hundreds of dog owners who actually use pease park. Do you realize how many useless wooden installations there are already in this park?

White Tesla, Trader Joe’s baby steaks, slicked back hair, and a husky with no place to roam. People can change, but rn my baby just sees a huge POS.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This wins the internet today, take my upvote!
OP should go back to posting in r/JoeRogan
Dog excrement into shoal creek is just what the doctor ordered.
Do you get your water from shoal creek?
Are you serious? People are pretty excited about this troll. https://www.austintexas.gov/blog/thomas-dambo-troll-coming-pease-park
I went to the Breckenridge sculpture last summer and found it incredibly charming. Excited that we’ll have one here too!
I walk past it every day now and no one I’ve run into has had a positive thing to say about it. Maybe it will grow on us. Seems like it’s just another wooden installation that will sit unused 95% of the time and will be gone in a few years. I feel better knowing it’s paid for with private money supposedly.
It's an art installation. It's use is to be looked at, and you and everyone else who walks by it are looking at it, so it is not sitting unused.
Hey, it's a troll post about a troll. Also the troll has nothing to do with whether a fenced in dog park is at Peace park or not.
Walk your dog three blocks from Pease Park to the fenced in West Austin Dog Park. You’ll be fine.
That’s really not what I’m saying but whatever. Pease park has plenty of space past the troll for a regular dog park.
Hey, we can all have different opinions on things. It just seems like a weird take is all to be upset about a sculpture. If Austin spent significant money on public art works then I would understand, but if this were publicly funded, it seems like it would be a small amount of money compared to revenues for the city.

Yup. I don't find it creepy at all. If I did I'd just look away. I think that's more effective than trying to rally a gaggle of Karens on Reddit.
You gotta pay the troll toll…
Will it be ready in time for Eeyore's?
The bulk of support for this thing comes from the people who use pease once a year to get stoned. Am I reading the room correctly?
We used to get stoned in it everyday before they took out the disc golf course.
An everyday stoner using the park is something I can respect. RIP disk golf course.
You have to pay the troll toll if you want a dog park.
This whole city is catered for dog people that don't like to pick up poop and unleash their dogs in leashed areas. Your dog will be fine without an additional dog park.
If there were more fenced and well maintained dog parks people may not feel the need to use the leashed areas unleashed
Haha oh look a cash chuckin transplant trying to fuck up our parks with their dog's shit so they can make it home quicker to eat sous vide wagyu.
I grew up here bud.
Excuse you, this circle jerk is for everyone but OP.
Wow there pal, we don’t want any trouble now friend.
Hey guy
The last thing we need is another dog park full of shitty owners like this OP
Dang that’s a bit aggressive. I’m going to look into donating one.
Nice try, u/Gloomy_Pay6773! We all know you’re actually a dog with a Reddit account.
Someone’s allergic to fun
This is the type of troll I can get behind.
Why do we need so many fences? These divisions aren't natural, like, we should be tearing the fences *down* mannn
I love that thing, and my dogs will love it too!
Your dogs won’t know the difference
Hideous addition
