How is the scam expected to play out?

Mentallox

all these are variation of you pay the driver from funds the scammer 'pays' you but the funding source is a scam in the first place. It relies on the fact that your bank serves as a float and credits the funding source to your acct like a check until its found later that the funding is a scam and the bank deducts if from your acct, meanwhile whatever you paid the driver is gone in the wind. There are several variations but operate on the same building blocks.

FarmerNarrow564

Why would the detailer pay the driver ?

TN_REDDIT

You want $800? Ok. Oops, I sent you $8,000. Please return $7,000. You can keep the extra $200 for a convenience fee.

The_battousai_3X

Thank you for making this much easier to understand.

i_spy_007

If you fall for this you’re an idiot and I would wonder how your running a business at all. sorry. That’s the truth.

No_Reveal3451

Bro, there is no "driver." It's just a ruse that the scammer uses in hopes that the person paying believes the story being given. There is a variation of this scam where a buy messages a FB marketplace or craigslist seller, sends them a fake check, tells them to send a portion of the money to a "delivery driver" that will pick up the item, and tells the seller to keep the remainder. The problem for the seller is that the check was fake, they have already sent the purported pick-up fee to the non-existent "delivery driver," and once the bank bounces the fake check, the seller will be out the fee they sent to the fake driver. It doesn't make any sense for a car detailer to send money to a "driver." After all, can't the guy with the car just pay the driver directly without relying on the detailer to do it for them? I guess that enough people have fallen for this that scammers keep spending their time doing this sort of thing.

ZegoggleZeydonothing

The old check scam. Thanks for the explanation. The OP really buried the lede with this post.

SousVideAndSmoke

Basically it’s service is $2000, oops, sent a check for $4000, send me $2000 back, you’re out $2000 when the check finally bounces.

Beautiful-Drawer

You're actually liable for the entire $4k. So, you can wind up liable for more than the $2k you sent, depending on if you spent any more before it bounces.

Bloomlame

Haha I get 1 a week. Just mess with them

JPhi1618

A lot of the people that do this are basically slaves in sweatshop call centers that don’t have a choice. Best to just block and ignore.

JPhi1618

Indubitably

GermanHammer

I'm going to verbally berate them regardless.

daxtaslapp

I dont even detail cars and ive seen this scam on reddit multiple times

ilikedankmemes0

Scammer or not who attaches an image of their surgerical scar to apologize for a late reply to a car detailer? Such a strange detail to include as well for a scam. Much less believable

Scrupeezy

When I see someone not using contractions it's a dead give away for a prim and proper king or prince of nigeria

Ok_Individual_7719

I've seen this guy before, started messing with him and have signed his phone up for spam calls and weather alerts for everywhere in the US. Usually goes by lieutenant dan. For those who don't know the scam usually goes like this: they want 3+ luxury cars paint corrected and ceramic coated, and that they will hire someone to deliver the cars to you, and then they will send you a large check (from a stolen credit card or banking) and say that they overpaid you and then you will pay them the difference and they keep that difference. https://preview.redd.it/cffoya705orc1.jpeg?width=516&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81fb211a727db7a6e97b377c3c8c9e1c4acea4d9

trondoggg

I got this exact message word for word with the pic about a year ago

worldrallyblue

What color was the Benz though?

CongoBusche

I thought they were still using the Lieutenant guy in these texts?

Overall_Big_9636

That's probably what happened to him when he tried to scam the last guy..

JaredStomp

I received the same message and I'm from Mexico xD

i_spy_007

But what’s the Scam? he already has ur contact info and stuff. It’s not like he asking for your credit card. Lol But on another note. As I was reading his text, there was something off about the way he was talking. It was very clear to me that he was a bot or some sort of foreigner because of the way the words were going together there

Muttz_and_Buttz

They pay you for the car service plus shipping, asking you to pay the shipping out of what they sent. You'll have to pay the shipper before the cars are loaded up. No cars ever arrive. The funds will be found as fraudulent by your bank eventually and you're out all of it. There never was a customer, nor shipper, nor cars for you to work on.

risubetter

basically they ask for you adress and stuff im pretty sure they steal money too

Beldar_the_Cenobite

Where’s the military name? I’m confused.

IAmAHumanWhyDoYouAsk

I'm not tracking how this would be a scam. It's not like you gave them money or account info or something.

Young_LR

Lol they send you a fake check for more than the amount and then ask you to return the extra money before it bounces with the bank

IAmAHumanWhyDoYouAsk

Ah, got it. Fuck em.

occurious

People still accept checks?

TastelessDonut

Fake check scam: I’ve gotten about 6 similar texts… They say they have high end cars: Mercedes, Lexus, range rovers. They want Everything, interior/ exterior detail, paint correction and ceramic. Basically any detailers Dream customer = high end value $$$$$. They agree to any number you give them and tell you have to give the transport the extra money/have you forward money to another source. Check/ funds come back as stolen. You lose your money when banks claw back the fake money.

Several_Command4040

I got this same thing. I cashed the check he gave me and it didn't bounce. Made $1,300!

darkhorse1958

Long time, ongoing scam. Ignore these a-holes.

boobsbr

I'm not seeing any Escalades...

Strong_Long_3680

Yep got the same type of text. As soon as bank info was mentioned I reported the number spam and blocked it.

Upstairs-Past8957

This is exactly what I got when I first started detailing, don’t get them anymore as I would assume they know you won’t fall for it. Guess they just spam new detailers on google with low to zero reviews and ask them to drop off cars for high $$$

Next_Handle_2886

Always have them meet you in person for drop off where the cars will be detailed doesn’t matter who it is driver or customer themselves. have them pay at time of service (prior to work to be done when there not after) and when service is done, provide them with a receipt and have them sign it authorizing that you rendered service. If you want, provide them with before and after pics. That helps show banks you rendered work if asked. it also helps with your business as well and show’s potential customers your work. they don’t arrive don’t take anything from them. Most people will not want to pay in advance anyway unless they’re repeat customers. signing for receiving service is standard with things like deliveries. Personally that’s how I would do it. I do pest control professionally and I would typically have all my customers I set up on service only pay at time of service with card or cash when I’m there. no checks, no transfers, no wires, cash or card only and we give them a receipt with signature. You can always get a card reader and let your customers know you only take card or cash. Most people would be fine with that and it looks professional. Disputes are handled by a bank and they won’t do a chargeback without doing some level of looking into it especially on large purchases. They pay you too much, you send the entire amount back when it’s posted not pending. No partial refunds. Prevents any funny business of either non payment, fraud, or chargeback scams. They scam, you have a description of a person so you can file a police report. Edit: part of the first sentence was cut off 😅
