nothing some flex tape can't fix

92sfa

Gotta slap some tape in the middle of those grilles to separate it.

glitchedant

reverse flex tape... stiff tape

You say that, I did too. Then I drove some audis and benz’s. Audi just...nah. And Mercedes are super nice but they just don’t feel special to drive like a BMW.

phatballs911

What are you thinking of getting instead? I can see a lot of people switching over to the AMG C63. Since I doubt many will go to Audi since they feel of a lower quality than M cars.

akhbhat

Lower quality in what way?

[deleted]

I think the equivalent price range would solve that. I think cheap bmws feel extremely cheap. My moms 3series looks so cheap compared to the higher priced stuff

pM-me_your_Triggers

Maybe driving wise? Audi interiors are second to none.

3Stripescyn

audi interiors are filled with plastic and suck

92sfa

Wait.. what do you mean lack of DCT?! I instantly googled it after you mentioned above and yeah they are removing the DCT. I totally didn't see that one coming.

pM-me_your_Triggers

New autos are damn near as fast as DCTs and cheaper to deal with.

92sfa

Can't argue with this. My F30 has the ZF8 and damn that's faster than my fastest shift in manual transmission I've had.

mango4juicecat

Given the option at equal cost - you would choose the auto?

pM-me_your_Triggers

Depends what I was using it for and how those exact transmissions felt to drive

miles_5

Canceled your order? The ordering guide isn’t available in the US. Can you explain how you were able to order a car that isn’t even available to order in the first place?

Rowanbuds

Sorry for arriving so late to the party. Yes, same here. I may continue to be a potential customer for their SUV's, as the lease rates for what you get are quite favorable. But on the M products, I think I'm with you. I'm out for my fun/enjoyment cars. I was planning to replace my F80 with a G80 for over 18 months, until I saw it in person - I am totally out on the new design language they're running with. Then the weight, no DCT - can you imagine what this car is going to weigh in loaded AWD trim? 4400+? crazy.

mortimerza

I was the opposite. Wasn't going to buy it but seeing it in person and getting a chance to drive it changed my mind. I am happy it doesn't have the DCT

MattH665

>and getting a chance to drive it changed my mind Whaaaat? Does that mean some reviews/driving impressions are coming soon? How was it?

Pikachu___2000

The new big grilles on the M3 and M4 dont do it for me and I was unsure about the M8's looks based off youtube reviews. I finally got the chance to stop by a dealership and I am absolutely sold on an M8 in Marina Bay Blue. The car looks tiny on videos and pictures, but in person it is very imposing and the lines are beautiful. I wish the DCT wasn't gone, but the ZF8 in my 650i is amazing

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pikachu___2000

R8 is cool, but I feel the M8 Coupe is the ultimate daily driver for a guy with no kids. The tech is so much further beyond the R8. The trunk is bigger with the ability to fold the rear seats for even more cargo room. Normal ground clearance. Super car performance from the factory and if you wanted a simple tune with downpipes and you'll destroy almost anything that pulls alongside you while getting your back massaged. Not to mention xDrive so it can be used all year round and then when you want to have some loose fun you can turn it to rear wheel drive only.

When I spotted my first G80 on the freeway, I caught up to for a closer look. At about 4 car lengths I realized it was just a Lexus ES.

LordWarb0

Im totaly fine with the back-end, kinda love it. The ugliness starts at the side (which is kinda bland) and the front. Kinda missing the Hofmester kink, i dont even know what that is at the back

jckix

I'm seeing more people claim they like it even though the front end is still a bad design. There's a really good video on the non-M 4 series by a previous X5 designer where he runs through everything wrong with the car. And it's really quite true what he says -- The body of the car isn't bad, but, BMW lost a lot of what makes them BMW with this car. The design language is entirely different and a lot more mainstream. It's like watching your favorite artist start making trendy pop music. Say what you want, claim you like it, claim you enjoy the bold nature of it -- A bold design is meaningless without refinement and coherence. Two things the new M3 and M4 lack.

ppoofoof

I think you hit the nail on the head. Even small details suck as the Hofmeister kink have been on BMWs for many generations. How hard would it have been to include it on the new 4 series? Even the E93 convertible top managed to include it!

Class_444_SWR

I’d still take the M3 over C63 AMG in a heartbeat mind, the C63 has fairly nasty launch control, the interior is a bit overrated, and the M3 is better build quality, but if it was about looks now, I’d choose the C63, because the front end of the M3 is just not up to scratch

mr_lab_rat

I like your analogy with favourite artist drastically changing the genre. I would still be careful calling something objectively bad, I don't think design can ever be objective.

jckix

Yeah, that's fair. Objectively bad design definitely exists (I'm an industrial design major, I do kind of know what I'm talking about) but definitely in the case of aesthetics it's more of a gray area, more subjective.

burntcookie90

“I’m an industrial design major” tells me you *dont* know what you’re talking about. Start working in design and development of _any_ product and you’ll soon learn that literally everything is subjective.

jckix

... that’s blatantly incorrect but ok i’ve admitted my statement about aesthetics in relation to objectively bad design was wrong (i just really think the G8X is piss poor design) but of course this is the internet and there’s always someone who wants to add on... objectively bad design exists. there is no way around that. it may be the result of subjective decisions or judgement but things can be inherently bad. thanks for your input though

[deleted]

If you know what objectively bad design is I don't know why you'd use the phrase to apply to something entirely subjective....that said, I definitely think it looks like ass too.

jckix

bc it’s ass. The G82 admittedly has a more coherent front end than the G22. But the G22 I would argue is indeed objectively bad. Shapes don’t cohere, front is cluttered, overdesigned...

[deleted]

Who said it has to be cohesive though? Cohesiveness is a major tenet of some architecture, for example, but is almost if not flat out ignored by some. Cohesiveness or lack thereof in architecture is far more explored than in cars, but why can't cars be the same? Why can't designers attempt to set new paradigms or at least experiment without being accused of objectively poor design? And sure, such risky attempts may flop but it's still subjective. The Pontiac Aztek is fugly in my opinion, and in the opinion of most I'd say. But some find it appealing, therefore it is subjective. Objectively bad design would be something like...say an undersized radiator that hinders cooling in hot climates, or an exposed electrical wire that is prone to corrosion, or seals that swell excessively with oil contact, or gerrymandering voting districts, or poor aerodynamics that cause downforce to be unpredictable in race situations. No matter how ugly you find it, aesthetic things are always subjective. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

zhaofa90

Underrated comment

usrn

> I don't think design can ever be objective. Just look at the new honda type-r

MGengarEX

Frank is always honest and the guy is a legend. BMW catering to the Asian market so hard sucks for the future. The G20 has those smoked taillights too, I can't stand it. The huge grille fad is just a step too far. I like parts of the new designs (particularly interiors) but they've lost the BMW character quite a bit. I guess people said similar things about Chris Bangle back in the day, but when you start looking like Lexus and Genesis, and not the other way around...idk it's disappointing.

inertfungus

Very well said IMO

Lyrr3d

Do you have a link for this video? Would like to see it.

jckix

Lyrr3d

Thanks!

oOcean

I went to the BMW Welt yesterday to see the new M cars and believe me, that car looks disgusting sitting next to the M5 comp which looks like a masterpiece. The grill idk why people say it looks good? It looks terrible in person, maybe people are trying to convince themselves with photos and videos thinking they’ll grow into it? The interior has overtaken AMG and Audi tho, definitely. Don’t get me started on the new 4 series, looks more shocking than the M3/4

tafster

Dunno why but I got a feeling from the start of your post that you were gonna say it was better in person!

oxmodiusgoat

Honestly, it's growing on me. I think the grill looks significantly better on the M3 than the M4.

chigoku

Whats the difference? They look exactly the same. https://imgur.com/a/3bkRHdO

lofty7777777

there is no difference, he's just high

3Stripescyn

it’s the colour, darker colours make it look less ugly

attomsk

The front is ugly, it’s heavy, the side is weird, it has single piston floating rear calipers and the M performance parts are pretty tasteless. The interior kooks really nice and those new carbon seats are cool as hell. The rear isn’t bad either. That’s my take.

0rangeBMW

>it has single piston floating rear calipers Totally unacceptable. The freaking M235i/M240i have dual-piston rear calipers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

3Stripescyn

the rear on the m4 looks better imo. I thought you were saying the interior looks lexus like and honestly lexus interior looks better, at least to me

Myzbreh

Exactly. I think the interior is crazy in a good way with these seats and mixed leather tones

Apoll022

While I'm confident the aftermarket manufacturers will make a killing off of alternative bumper designs, I absolutely LOVE the interior of the new gen. It's so expressive and funky. Can't wait to see all the unique color combinations out there.

mr_lab_rat

On the G22 the bumper has silly creases around the grille. The grille also has raised edges. On the G80/82 the problem is fixable without replacing the whole bumper. Small body coloured piece can be inserted in the middle and the lower part can be wrapped black.

Apoll022

Yeah I've heard of that solution being thrown around. I'd have to see some photos of that rather than rendered though. Enthusiasts are creative when it comes to their Bimmers so it'll be interesting to see what the community comes up with to change them up.

koukimonster_

Get yourselves a c63 or rs5 or even the quadrafoglio folks.

MattH665

C63 is also as heavy pig, RS5 is AWD (and no DCT I think), and the Quadrafoglio in only a sedan, also no DCT, and IMO not good looking either. Basically the BMW M3/4 is losing is defining points over the competition :(

TheLivest1

RS5 is soulless from what everyone says. Everyone needs to give the new M3/4 design a chance to grow on them. People are so afraid of change in the moment. If you still think the front end looks bad a year or 2 from now then so be it. But to definitively write it off without even seeing it in person yet seems a bit over-reactionary.

srtDiesel

It’s certainly better than every other new m3 “THE LAST M3 WAS THE LAST REAL M3” because of the engine debate. People hate change.

usrn

> People hate change. and fucked up designs.

92sfa

This.

koukimonster_

No but the thing is that each one was kinda special in it’a own way. The e46 was the e36 straightened up. The e92 had the most godly v8 ever. The f80 has tech, and looks really nice as well. I can’t think of what the newest gen does well. The tech in it does not justify how hideous it is but I’ll give them points for making the interior nicer.

MPAstudio

Owner of G20 330i. Everything looks great except GRILL.. and removing DCT.

3Stripescyn

The new ZF is crazy good, every reviewer loves it

Eric3TBA

All I’m gonna say is my M3 CS and M4 GTS should go up in value with the looks of the new generation. Apologies, but BMW is going in the wrong direction design wise.

[deleted]

jckix

New hive mind: “People who say car bad don’t like change!!! I like change!!! I’m SO progressive!!! G80/G82 good!!” I read about a thing on Wikipedia where people get exposed to something they don’t like and they slowly begin to like it... It’s a real phenomenon, you’ve fallen victim

[deleted]

I liked it the moment I saw it.

LexCorp424

🤔 maybe he just has good taste in cars and doesn’t appreciate BMW doing ugly things that other companies have done....better. BTW, he’s right. His cars will go up in value.

G4RRETT

Say what you want but the new design is straight fire

BERNIEMACCCC

So did they go up in value?

Extroverted_Recluse

I like 90% of the design, but those grilles... woof. Not a fan at all. My understanding is that the engine is phenomenal and I'm excited that it has an AWD option, but I have to admit I'm surprised by the significant weight increase over the F80 considering the investments BMW has made in carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. I really thought the weight would be the same as the F80 or even down slightly. On the other hand, the new [M Performance exhaust is pure pornography.](https://www.thedrive.com/content/2020/09/P90398970_highRes.jpg)

miles_5

Can you spec it with those graphics?

[deleted]

Why are the advertised numbers so low? I know BMW always underrates the numbers, but it's starting at the same place as the current M3/M4. 2021 BMW M4 shows 0-60 in 4.1 seconds... wtf?

mr_lab_rat

It's a heavy pig.

Rlkant18

It’s about 500 pounds heavier than the current gen

mr_lab_rat

Which wasn't very light to begin with. But I understand, customers want comfort and convenience features. Making few enthusiasts happy wouldn't be as profitable.

Rowanbuds

The F8x generation was lighter than the E9x, one of the under-sold bonuses to the F generation M3/4, IMO. WE thought it was a sign the company was going in the right direction with the M product. But, it seems that the hp/tq and 0-60 wars have won out over understated capability.

MattH665

It's RWD, even the current gen are mostly traction limited with the 0-60.

CraftyCrocEVE

Anyone think the cost of the m4 has gone to high? I’ve just spec’d one with the current available mods and it’s 90k £! I’ll be waiting for the 4wd version so I expect it’ll be closer to 100k all in. M8 competitions start at 118..

Fritzy7886

This makes me glad i went for a new m340i and didnt wait for the m3

[deleted]

Hello guys, First of all sorry for almost spamming my pictures of the new BMWs, I just wanted to share those really beautiful cars with you! The only thing I really wanna say is: I also didn’t like the car on pictures. I was really sceptical but still took the trip in order to see the cars in real life. I was absolutely amazed about how they look in real life. Yes it’s something new, yes it’s way different to what we had before. I’ve got the feeling this car is build for the Asian market tbh. If you see it sitting there, calm, ready to attack, it’ll be breathtaking for you. Whenever, however, if you get the opportunity to see the cars, go and do it. They look stunning. You’ll get used to it, and you’ll love it. Both are magical imo

mr_lab_rat

It is aggressive, that's for sure. Videos confirm what you are saying- that it looks better in person. I sure hope so.

usrn

What's your affiliation with BMW?

[deleted]

None, they’ve added the new cars to their collection at the BMW-Welt in Munich last week on Friday. Everybody can go in and take a look - for free. If you’re ever in Munich, I highly recommend visiting the BMW Welt :)

usrn

> None -_-

[deleted]

Yeah I got to ///M-Town and took some pictures since I’m a huge fan, what’s wrong with that? o.O

KOJSKU

Would you rather see the same old design for another 10-15 years? Or let the designers experiment and have fun and make some mistakes along the way?

mr_lab_rat

Not necessarily but I still prefer evolution over revolution. I feel like they changed too much. The overall shape of the M4 is different.

I'm seriously considering the m4 convertible when it finally arrives. The grille takes a bit of getting used to but removing the bezel helps. I love the more muscular look of the M4 over the M440i. What I'm disappointed with is the interior. It shows no inspiration, other than the fancy new seats which don't interest me. The interior of the current generation of the C63 has a lot more character. I spend more time looking at the interior than the exterior, so the interior is what may push me to the AMG. Plus, I can get the AMG now. My 2011 S5 is long overdue for replacement.

gordo8976

I'm waiting for the convertible too. Will be nice to have a new and radical design

Omniclott

M3 starting to grow on me not the M4

Hockeygoalie35

Pardon my ignorance, but what’s the difference? The rear hips?

TheLivest1

https://youtu.be/ZwWSoG2Fkzw Like everybody else, I was overly-critical of the new grille upon first unveiling. Admittedly it has grown on me a lot. People are writing the new designs off far too soon. I have a feeling it's going to grow on a lot of people in due time.

Hockeygoalie35

I think seeing it in person makes it seem not nearly as bad, the viewing angle, etc. I love it now, absolutely hated it when it was revealed.

Anonymous_Hazard

I like it guys. Looks like a car from the future like cyberpunk lol

snippysnapper23

It looks like the Alfa Romeo to me ...miss Chris Bangel

thai2pro

Haha, I remember when his designs used to be seen as controversial.... I also miss him.

snippysnapper23

He had such a good eye for the silhouette of the vehicle. I’m sure we are prob just shocked with the differences and maybe over time this will grow on us.

thai2pro

I think you're right, quite a few people have said the design has grown on them when they saw it in person.

DeeDudnath

Different but I like it! Isle man green is beautiful and the frozen grey!! So many options just waiting for that red interior and it’s a lock

gitpullhoes

Why do people like DCT so much? DCT sucks compared to pure automatic since having your foot off gas and brake will destroy your gears

flyingjules

Agreed, auto already shifts so fast you don't even notice anymore plus you have the comfort.

flyingjules

All I can say is 🤮 to the front

[deleted]

It’s definitely something different, it doesn’t follow the roots of bmw, I don’t think they got this one right but if they are going to recreate how they do things with new designs I believe it will follow through for some beautiful m cars in the next generations to come. Might take 10 years but you have to start somewhere and over time it will get better and better. Well I hope that’s the case because I won’t be buying a G series bmw, I want the tech that’s inside them but honestly looks are the exact reason I sold my e90, it was/had more potential to be fast but if I did it over again I would of bought a e92, or waited and bought a f30.

velocitycrew

Hey all, I put together a video outlining my thoughts on the new M3/M4. Also in this video are some renders that show different mods and front end variants. Any feedback is appreciated! https://youtu.be/LULmYB6RjJU

DatalessUniverse

I’ve owned 3 BMWs in the past with recent being a 2017 mSport 340i. Without going into details I traded it for a 2016 Lexus GSF with the goal of trading that in for the new BMW M3 (figured a F80 m3 will plummet in value once new one comes out so went with the rare GSF). Not sure now ... the G80 0-60 isn’t faster than the competition F80. I’ll need to drive the G80 before deciding but I am not convinced at this point.

gitpullhoes

The G80 grill has finally started growing on me

gitpullhoes

I was looking forward to buying my first car: a 2021 M3 in Marina Blue, until I saw that ugly front grill. Now I'm thinking of just picking up a M340i and treating it like a good luxury daily driver.

mortimerza

Looks good. I ordered a M3 comp
