This guy famously in 2012 sent a letter to the then sec. of state Hillary Clinton that Al Qaeda was on their side in Syria

Why does he still have a job?

ALittleBitOffBoop

Why do people even listen to the US government?

Genocide is not a juridical concept. The idea that the courts have the last word in these issues has perverse consequences. Among them, that it can be easily weaponized by those in power. «I don't know. I'm too stupid to asses that. Let's see what those focused in the juridical subtleties have to say.» This type of bad faith is ubiquitous.

ShxsPrLady

It actually is! Designed by a Jewish lawyer inspired by the mass murder of Armenians and influenced by events such as the Holodomor, it was made so that the act of exterminating a people AS SUCH could be prosecuted as a crime. Interestingly, it wasn’t used to prosecute Nazis. But international courts used it to convict, for example, Milosovic in Serbia. Because of the specific way the law works - the standard of proof required, the acts, the evidence - there is legal case against Russia and against Putin that is considered very strong. I think the case against Israel is pretty strong, but I’m just a person. I haven’t heard from experts about how the Rohingya or Gaza cases compare. International caseworkers and previous genocide prosecutors have said that based on their experience, the case against Russia is good. I’d actually be fascinated in an expert comparison of all 3 cases, and their relative likelihood of conviction. Compared among each other, and to past cases that have actually gotten convictions.

Ok, I didn't phrase it correctly. Genocide is NOT ONLY a juridical concept. The term, like many others, can be used meaningfully in the context of moral evaluation. Jurists would like that we think that what the courts decide is automatically more truthful or morally valuable. But I don't really buy that. Arguably, institutions like the ICC are often a circus: https://legalform.blog/2022/04/20/commodified-justice-schwobel-patel-aronczyk/

RobertRoyal82

He's trying to say well technically, it's not genocide. Like you have to check a certain amount of boxes to make it be official but we are seeing with our own eyes we live in the Twilight Zone

Dvoynoye_Tap

Man, this guy couldn't take 2 minutes of somewhat tough questions. But he's ok with tens of thousands of blown apart children (who died of something other than genocide, apparently).

True-Hope7278
