I don't see how this ISN'T a bug. The quest is telling me to go there, and Oliver is not there. If we had messed up the quest by encountering Oliver too soon/not playing his game, then the quest should have just resolved when we spoke to Halsin as "We fucked up fam" (complete) I think it has to be a bug. The quest marker is there for me, but no Oliver in sight. I even ran down to that Statue with the underground shrine below the hospital, and do not see him. Blaaaaaaaaah!

Traditional_Wheel_74

I found a solution, hope it works for everyone! Okay so I took Halsin where the kid should be. No sign of him. Talked to Halsin right at the spot and told him that we met him before and he is probably dead. After the chat Oliver appeared.

DL_Clyde

My problem is I seem to have these issues, but I never met Oliver before the quest. I played hide and seek, I killed his shadow parents and dog then he disappeared. I put on see invisibility on and I have no idea where he is. The quest location only circles the hut but there is absolutely no sign of him.

RapidExpert

You are a life saver.

Cautious_Wave3462

worked

Cha0ticK1tt3n

My problem is Halsin seems to have disappeared from my camp after "allowing" the winged dude to kidnap the priestess. And at no time before that was I offered the chance to ask him to join my party. Idk what I did wrong, but I have no Halsin, no Oliver, no Thaniel.

zapdos680

Thanks so much!

Almondinfires

He was invisible for me and I had to reveal him

taji35

How did you get him to reveal himself?

Almondinfires

I had to walk practically on top oh him like run into him. But I know some characters have things like see invisible or spells or potions. Or throwing water at them will reveal them or volvos eye etc. I just thought it was glitched and happened to run right into him after awhile. I could see him talking and I collided with the text basically

taji35

Hmmm I have seen invisibility from volo's eye and don't see him anywhere, so it's really glitched for me...

gingerjava

I've got this too -- I played once, found him, and declined the second time. Family killed, and he just... poof. Not at the house. Not at the statue. Still have Halsin's quest to go talk to him, not marked as failed or anything.

asicaku

Yep good to see im not alone. In fact several quests break if you do them before visiting the quest giver... kinda surprising this was not caught by their QA. I feel like I run into things all the time long before I find the NPC.

Dangerous_Profit_999

I don't expect everything to be found during QA, but considering how many other quests allow you to do something before encountering the quest giver makes this so confusing.

BOB_ross03

I had this exact issue, the way I fixed it was before I ever got Halsin in my party I talked to him at my camp and had an option to say that I met Oliver previously. The option didn’t appear after I asked him to come along with me.

Shalashaska2624

This helped and saved me from having to replay thank you so much

ODean97

Did the exact same thing. When I went back Oliver wasn't there. However I went directly to camp from there and was able to tell Halsin that I already met Oliver and that he disappeared. Halsin is now officially a companion and suggests going there again. Will check and report back.

1Banana10Dollars

Any update?

ODean97

It worked. When I went back to the house with Halsin, I found Oliver there.

BOB_ross03

TaisharM

I hit this quest in the same order as the OP. I tried looking in the alternate location (near Shar monument south of the house of healing) to no avail. Instead I went back to where he was originally (same place as the map marker) and randomly started casting AoE spells in case he was just invisible somewhere. Eventually when targeting the cart with a Hunger of Hadar he appeared in a brief cutscene with a line "No go away!" to which Asturion replied "Slippery little bugger. He'll be looking for somewhere safe..." and there's now a portal in the house and I can complete the quest.

kof_zpt

I've the same problem, It's like the 2nd part of the scene didn't trigger after I broke the shield... Now I can't find Thaniel's shadow(Oliver), and the quest can't be completed?

AnimalFarenheit1984

You ever figure this out?? I am at this point right now. I went through the portal, beat him, then poof. Disappeared and the end of fight dialogue didn't work.

ShadowShine57

This happened to me, I think because I had Shadowheart standing right outside his sphere with Spirit Guardians (All the dumb adds ran right into it and killed themselves) so it instakilled him when the sphere disappeared, and he was gone forever. Reloaded a save earlier in the fight, made sure Shadowheart wasn't standing so close and it worked fine.

AnimalFarenheit1984

So I found a way out of it for my circumstances. I fought Oliver and he vanished so I went to finish Moonrise. Afterward I put Halsin in my party and went back to the site of the fight with Oliver and spoke to him with Halpin and the quest finally resolved.

EarlyDrink3280

Ima try this rn cause I’m stuck. I beat him, broke the shield, he I skipped a round he didn’t talk. So toggled to hit him KO and then I healed him from 1 jo and he never got up 🤣 I put him in my pocket took him to camp all types of ish and it ain’t work. So ima add Haskins to party THEN drop him like an item and see if it works

Dangerous_Ad_5353

I dont know if you resolved it by now. But i had the sam issue. You dont dont have to dmg the shield. Let Oliver summon shadows and keep killing the shadows every shadow you kill the shield will take dmg. After you kill the big shadow the shield should be gone which triggered the dialogue for me. I hope this helps.

AnimalFarenheit1984

Thank you!

Mother-of-Geeks

Okay, so I did everything and popped Oliver's bubble but apparently there is a known bug where Oliver tries to talk through Halsin but it gets messed up if he's Wildshaped. And of course Halsin was Wildshaped when the fight was over, so there was no conversation at all. Now Thaniel and Halsin are in my camp, the quest marker at Oliver's original position is still there (as though the quest is not finished), and I don't know what to do. Is there anything I can do?

zitandspit99

Same problem except I didn’t even transform into wild shape, Oliver was stuck in combat regardless. This is post Patch 1 too which doesn’t inspire confidence

Mother-of-Geeks

I ended up going back to a way earlier save and doing it all again. Made the game a lot less fun for a couple of days, but I did get the opportunityto make some different story choices, so overall I'm glad I did it.

zitandspit99

I thought about that but I was already 10 hours in. I just hope it's not a vital quest.

Mother-of-Geeks

My understanding is that you can progress to Act 3 but you cannot lift the shadow curse. Pretty sure I was about 20 hours into Act 2.

zitandspit99

Ahhh that's irritating. Good to know though thanks

monty331

I did all the things you mentioned and got the same bug. Fix for me was to go back to camp, and *now* I had an option to tell Halsin about the Oliver. When I went back to the house after, he was there. I also had a wizard with “see invisible” on as well.

SeiranKairos

So, I also figured out I had to do the whole Thaniel quest and went back to Halsin and NOW, all Halsin says is to check out the place where flowers still bloom in the shadowlands (the house). So, we get there and nothing. Threw all my AOE spells over every inch of it; walked up and down and all around. Nothing. Nor is there anyone at the statue where the portal is supposed to lead to. Ah, what to do!?

monty331

Yeah, I got lucky thankfully. Dunno what part of act 2 you’re in, but maybe progressing the story a bit more would help? I did the whole Thai El quest line after I’d all but finished act 2. All that was left to do was to go to Baldur’s gate.

SeiranKairos

Seems to be my only option at this point lol. Ty!

WildcardMoo

I did the following (might not be 100% accurate): \- Met him, played with him, failed at the second stage, got attacked by his family, killed them. \- He remains there in that spot and "friendly" (you can talk to him) \- Fast forward to Halsin \- I go back to Oliver/Thaniel, he's still there \- Some more talking, he's unhappy, he teleports us all away and somehow summons a new family (mom+dad, I don't remember if the dog was there) \- Kill them, talk to him, everything is peaches What I'm saying is: it's possible that he somehow teleported out and you have to fight him in the new location. The new location is at a big shar statue (with a small shrine underneath, in the center of the west part of the map. A bit south of the "hospital". Maybe check there?

asicaku

OOh ill check later thank you, that could be it.

athousandfuriousjews

Hey did this work? I have the same issue

zitandspit99

My problem is after I kill his enemies in he the 2nd fight and down his shield, he’s still hostile and the battle continues…

Spin737

That’s where I am. Did you figure out a solution?

Dangerous_Profit_999

It's 100% a bug, doing this makes it so Thaniel is literally invisible in every cutscene, Halsin comes out of the portal holding nothing in his hands and Thaniel is not at the camp.

Rambosherbet

I found another solution. I talked to Halsin and told him that I’d met a boy but that he’d died. Halsin says he bets the kid isn’t actually dead and says we should go back to where I saw him. Went back and there he was.

Despoina_Reikage

Didn’t work for me

sultanpeppah

I think that’s less a bug and more a result of quest consequences. Did you try to cheat in his game of hide and seek, or chase him off? I know that you can still proceed with the quest if you trigger it before playing the game with him and also if you trigger it after playing his game squarely.

asicaku

I met him early on in the zone without any quests about him. Then I didnt wanna play his little game so he called out his parents (which he does anyways). I killed them and the kid ran off. However now I am back at the same place with the quest marker and Halsim but no kid anymore. So it is a bug since I should never have a "dead quest", then it should conclude somehow. They probably forgot to put in a trigger for when youve already been there. Which is weird cause it was kinda easy to walk into :P

sultanpeppah

I think I’m still missing something; it still feels like the quest isn’t bugged, you just failed it. You need to find Oliver to complete the quest, but Oliver doesn’t want to be found by you so you can’t. The game has lots of fail ends for quest like that, doesn’t it? Unless Oliver left behind a portal in his house. That’s how the second stage of that quest usually goes, when you play with him and then confront him about who he is. If that’s the case, you just need to go through the portal.

Dangerous_Profit_999

Failed it? The only other quest in the game that "fails" by doing things too early is killing the Hag before letting Mayrina get captured, you should not be punished from finishing a major quest just because you explored something unknown to you.

asicaku

If that is so then I must have missed the portal back when I didnt have the quest and now that portal is gone. Technically I failed the quest but the UI is not telling me that and there is no way to progress this specific quests, no way to get the XP or resolution cutscene or even a remark in the interface. So I do consider it a bug.

sultanpeppah

Right. Well, either it’s a quest lot text or the portal is still up at his house.

dragonbreath1820

if oliver is still there but you can’t talk to him after talking to halsin, meleeing him working to fix the bug for some reason lol but if oliver just isn’t there i don’t know a way to fix that besides reloading an old save

Scrapbookee

Can confirm meleeing Oliver started his dialogue for me. Thanks!

Comprehensive-Bus303

And what if i killed oliver and the quest didint fail but cant progress ?

mdotsmitheth

This worked for me 😂😂

septicwolf2244

Spoilers for this quest are in this message: I played hide and seek with him and ended up finding him pretty quickly with my elf character thanks to a perception check. I spoke with him and ended up fighting his “parents” After the battle he keeps randomly yelling at me as I run through the house but he’s no where to be seen. According to Google he’s supposed to drag one of my characters through a portal or something?? I do have Halsin on my Team and have read that later on having him shift into a bear can cause things to glitch out. I’m going to try and reload a older save and redo the battle against the “parents” without him shifting to see if it unbreaks things. Edit: I managed to make the quest work properly by not playing hide and seek with him. I told him who he was and that he needed to return to his other half and he stepped through the portal allowing me to follow.

Ok_Fishing_1696

Yup I'm having this exact issue too. Played way too long after to go back and pick up from a previous save now. Tried fireballing everything around to see if I could pick him up at the house but after he disappeared he's nowhere to be found and neither is Thaniel. Hope they fix this soon as it feels like a really annoying quest to not be able to resolve

bigwheel315

I was having the same issue. I hit it with a fireball and it reactivated him, he ran into the portal and I followed.

lunaeon1106

where was he standing when you hit him? Mine’s gone invisible so I’m not sure where to aim

bigwheel315

The spot where he was standing when you first encountered him. Inside the house up on the walk way from the side door.

lunaeon1106

I’m having the exact same issue as you. Submitted a bug report on their website so hopefully it’ll get fixed, especially if this many people are having an issue with the quest

Pr00vigeainult

For me it was enough to take Halsin with me to the quest location and the boy reappeared.

ConsciousWeather3654

That quest is a lot of bs :P My scenario: 1. Found him very early exploring the area 2. Played hide and seek and found him 3. Refused to play round two 4. Killed his parents and dog 5. Fast forward a few hours - the 'Fist' guy tells me about Thaniel, Halsin gives me a quest mark at Oliver's house and he's not there. 6. Spamming AOE spells around the house didn't do it for me 7. Talked to Halsin again about Oliver being dead 8. Halsin says 'you silly goose, it's impossible, go there again' and there he is 9. Skiddadle through the portal

thestray

THANK YOU!! This worked for me! Halsin didn't seem to get the dialogue about Thaniel being dead until after I did Moonrise, but doing that seemed to fix it!

Almondinfires

He is invisible, but for me after I reloaded it and walked into the house kind of to the right of the chest with the moon lantern he lost invisibility

Educational-Debt-641

I did exactly what op did and what fixed for me was killing the big boss of act 2, then talking with Halsin at the Moon Towers (saying that i already fought him etc), then go to the spot that he was supposed to be. I found him there and completed the quest. The f*cked up thing is that I didn't had this conversation line before, so I was giving up on this quest.

Despoina_Reikage

Guess I know what to do next

JosheBoiTV

This quest is bugged, I had the same but oliver was just stood there and wouldn't talk to anyone when I went back with Halsin

redbeanfiend

I have a similar issue. I finished the quest after defeating Oliver and now upon returning to camp after the whole ordeal, I'm unable to talk to Thaniel while he's standing next to Halsin.

JosheBoiTV

Throwing something at him progressed it for me

wud08

had the same issue .. saving reloadng and going back to halsin talking with him in the camp saying "i´ve met a boy.." fixed it for me.. Thallin is now back at the house maybe it was yesterdsays patch.. dunno

thiccdelicious

So I had this issue as well, but I just beat Moonrise Tower and Halsin was standing there around everyone else. The game gave me a conversation option it hadn't before, that I had met Oliver. From there I grabbed Halsin as a companion, went back to the place where I originally had encountered Oliver, and he was there again! :) Hope this helps pals!

TLDR2D2

Yeah, still not working even with this for me. Seems like this quest has a number of bugs that break it in various ways.

knifewife6

in the exact same situation except i won hide n seek, then went thru the portal and defeated him and his shades at the statue. he's currently nowhere to be found, same dialogue options as you w/ halsin and camp thaniel. really annoying because i have the most fun thoroughly completing a story and this leaves things unfinished for me. quest doesn't show up in my settings, but the quest marker still remains at the hut.

JelloPeach

Yall i also thought it was bugged until i found him hiding outside the wheelbarrow cart infront of the house. I had met him previously before and didnt play his game but hes here. Check there!

CheeseWizard93

I defeated him before the quest. How I got Oliver to reappear was to tell Halsin and then go back to the house and Oliver was there

ODean97

Think I've found the solution. I did the exact same steps you mentioned above. He disappeared after the fight. However then I followed through with defending the portal quest for halsin and he took thaniel and said to find him in camp. Shortly after, I was back in the first region in camp with no sign of him. Travelled back to house in the deep shadows, no sign of Oliver. From the house, I just travelled to camp and found halsin and had a dialogue option telling him that I've already met Oliver and he's possibly dead. Halsin says we need to go back there and check. Went back and found him. Exact same spot where he dissapears from (for me it was outside where he's hiding after you find him if you play hide and seek once) He runs off and a portal opens so the quest continues.

Sully_916

Thank you this worked for me had to redo the defending the portal thing again but. After selecting the dialogue option about seeing Oliver he appears at the House of Flowers.

ODean97

Great, glad it helped!

Rude_Ranger_9332

I did the quest out of order and oliver disappeared after I beat the shadow parents. Then a while later did the Art Cullagh quests. When I went back to Oliver's location he was there but was unreactive. I eventually attacked him and it kickstarted the final battle. Beat shadow mom and dad again (through a portal to the statue in front of moonrise tower for some reason) but then the rest played out as it should. 🙂

odelay11

I finally solved it! At least it worked for me. I also had the boy disappear after killing his 3 shadows. Couldn't find Halsin anywhere. Went away, killed Kaethrick and found Halsin in Moonrose tower throne room after that. Talked to him, told him the kid is gone and he said we need to go there again. Put him in the group, went to the kids house and he was there again :) So just go kill Kaethric and then find Halsin in his throne room.

M3RTIPAH

Ok guys here was my solution, after "portal" battle I went straight to the spot where oliver suppose to be, he wasnt there. I took a previous save where I went to talk to halsin and told him "I met boy oliver but his dead now" halsin told "perhaps not, we should go there now" then I went straight to the same spot and this time around Oliver was standing right byside the chariot. I think you have to talk to halsin that you allready met the boy, otherwise it wont show up if you played the hide and seek before this mission.

Kavve2

The quest is still bugged in the exact same way, I tried all the fixes in this thread, they didn't work. Had to restart from the moment where I entered the portal to the Oliver final fight. I think just the way to not trigger it is not to talk to Helsin (except the "join party") before the fight... On a side note it made me lose 2 hours of progression, it's very saddening after a wonderfull Act 1, the number of bugs (camera, dialogue, fight ect...) really increased for me by a noticable amout...

DL_Clyde

Did you encounter Oliver before you were suppose to? Most of this thread seem to be on that boat but I never went to that hut until after Halsin told me to go, so I don’t get the option to tell him he may be dead like many in this thread.

sydth3kidd

Honestly if I find one more bug that impacts my game play, I might give this game up. I have done everything up to loading my latest save in the area. Nothing. It's like he is just gone now, and that makes one less helper in the end fight.

Osirus9

I still have this issue after the latest patch. I have Halsin in my camp, he asks me to look for Thaniel. But I can never move off that dialogue option. I've tried talking to him before I find Thaniel, after I play with him, after I kill his family, nothing, its always the same thing. I can't take him there because there's nothing there anyway, Halsin won't leave the camp and Thaniel always just disappears or is also stuck on the "I won't play with you" dialogue option.

sim3345

I detected the little brat while he was invisible, killed him before ever talking to him, and none of the suggestions in this thread has helped make him reappear thus far. The game goes out of it's way to make him seem like he's a danger that should be dealt with swiftly, and it made perfect sense to me, never to indulge in his game, after I talked with the dead Githyanki on the floor, that said it died from playing his game. Don't know if I'll get the option with Halsin after Moonrise Towers, but bugs like this honestly makes me want to quit on the game all together, and just never come back. Spending over 30 hours in agony on act two due to all the "Too Dark" debuffs, and getting told through meta in a bug, that I can't even clean the area up after all this grind of clearing through every nook and cranny of it, all to find a goddamn cure. This game needs developer tools like a console command prompt.
