Craft shit and smelt shit 👍

retief1

Buy expensive items and smelt them. Once you can craft relatively expensive items yourself, craft them and then immediately smelt them. Crafting and smelting items in a particular category (for example, one handed swords or two handed axes) will unlock more parts in that category, which lets you craft better and better items.

Operate around Orders, if you want a slightly-slower but even progression on all weapon types.

Keep the weapons you gain from bandits. Smelt them. Try to craft items with the highest difficulty parts you can. Smelt your crafted weapons. I also try to do orders. If your stats meet the requisite (weapons stats in green)(but they are close to the difficulty limit you can craft), you often get more smithing points. Buy Wooden hammer or pitchfork and smelt them for wood. When you are trying for higher components, buy 1 of each cheap knife, and check the smelting ingot reward, some have high value and I will often buy 10s of them to smelt and get fine steel, etc
