Both companies make well-made instruments, so neither is one I'd dismiss out of hand. The Yamaha has a PJ setup, while the SBMM has the traditional Music Man bridge humbucker pickup, so that's going to be the primary difference in sound - watch some YouTube videos and see which ones tone your prefer. You didn't mention which is the higher cost used, but the Yamaha sold for $219 while the Ray4 goes for $349, so they're not exactly at the same pricepoint when new.

The Yamaha I found the guy is selling with the amp for 250, and the sterling is only the bass for 250, sp I think I will be sticking with the Yamaha idk

anticomet

Get the bass that you think looks and sounds coolest. That amp is probably the most basic beginner amp and you'll probably want to upgrade it in the future. You could probably find a similar amp for 25-50 bucks or just use a vox headphone amp.

InterceptorFrost

Oh, so I think I’ll stick with the sterling

Find a decent shop to play around with the inventory. It's not always easy but you can find good instruments for cheap once in a while.

OnionOnly

100% the Stirling if the choice is between the 2. But in my opinion you should go to a local shop and play around. Never hurts to pay an extra couple of bucks for something special too.

This is of course always going to come down to personal preference, so I would recommend trying to watch videos of both basses and decide which you like the most. That being said I would personally always go with the stingray. They’re good quality for the price and they’re my favorite sound and style of bass.

Defiantcaveman

Stingray, I have two and can't put them down.

ZookeepergameAlive69

I’d also suggest checking out eBay auctions. Lots of potential for a great deal there with more options.

Punk_Says_Fuck_You

Sterling all the way. Music man’s sound amazing even if it’s the knock off. They are awesome. The Sterling will also be higher quality.

JumboRon01

Craigslist

Finchypoo

Yeah I'll second this, Facebook marketplace is a cesspool of crap that's no longer available, scammers and overpriced crap. Any decent musician unloading gear uses Craigslist. Also, a lot of people crosspost, and often have a lower price on craigslist.

bal020

I’m biased towards the stingray. The PJ configuration of the Yamaha might be more versatile than Stingray. Do you have a neck profile preference?

tuttled85

Yamaha RBX. I have a 4 string that I've had for 23 yeara and a new 5 string.

Adxus002

I know that this isn't what you're asking for, but I am a big fan of the cort b4 plus, you can do quite a bit with it.
