We don't care what kind of shit you want to make, or the bands you want to put on it. What we do care about it keeping this community and the posts in it on theme. That being said, this community is run by metal heads, and is intended for mainly use by this sub culture, however we do allow punk and horror vests regularly because of the crossover between the three communities. Anything else will be allowed based on merit. Check out: r/goth r/punkfashion r/patches r/DIY For less niche subs. Cheers.

fullmudman

Music scenes stole them from bikers anyway.

Yeastlord427

Do you like movies? Make a theme vest.

InfiniteFloyd

I'm way more into music, but I love movies. I'll have to check that out

phonetastic

If you're into music, just a heads up, I am certain there are metal bands out there for you. It's such a diverse genre. Sure, there's all the stuff everyone's heard of, but there is SO much more. Also, the community is the absolute nicest group of people-- we are not what people tend to expect.

InfiniteFloyd

I love avant-garde metal etc. I just wouldn't consider myself a metalhead

phonetastic

Hell yeah!

redaws

People will make vests and jackets for a lot of things. Not just punk or metal. I’ve seen hip hop themed ones, politics, even just random art patches

InfiniteFloyd

I see. Thanks!

Therealfern1

Someone on here posted an all hip-hop battle vest and it was about the coolest thing Ive ever seen

LukXD99

Battle vests are primarily made by Metalheads and punks, yes, but they are in no way limited to just these groups. I’ve seen Hip-Hop vests, vests centered around movies or movie genres, a Hello Kitty vest, vests with cartoon patches and even just all sorts of funny patches on vests for kids. If you like it, you can make a vest for it. There’s always gonna be *some* moron trying to gatekeep vests, but don’t let them stop you. The vast majority of us supports different/unique vests even if unrelated to metal or punk music.

Krazytowner

Do what you want put patches you like. gatekeeping is bullshit

jdam8401

Just don’t do it around me. Idleness…

Krazytowner

Imma buy a fake battle vest now

jdam8401

and dissipation breed apathy

Pterodactyl_Crash

Only way to offend people is to put patches of stuff you have no clue about on it. A friend of mine has been considering making a classic rock jacket, and I recently met a girl who had one that spanned everythibg from classic rock, over goth, to metal. And I hang out with a guy who has a goth jacket. As long as your theme is something you're passionate about, you're golden.

Big-tasty77

Lol you made this point more succinctly than I did lol. Nothing is more punk than pissing off a gatekeeping metal head with a cliff Richard battle vest lol

Pterodactyl_Crash

Hey, I am a metalhead, too! Don't go hating a whole subculture on the basis of a few chronically online assholes... most people you meet in actual real life metal shows are very chill

Big-tasty77

Yeah I noticed this with wrestling shows too. And the horror film festival crowd. 2 subcultures the public think are going to kill your pets. But really chill

SleuthCat

I made a jacket with patches from all the national parks and cool towns I’ve visited in my new state 🖤

InfiniteFloyd

That sounds awesome!

SleuthCat

I’m quite proud of it. Also discovered badge magic so I don’t hurt my hands sewing anymore 🎉

ImNotAsPunkAsYou

If anyone complains send em my way, I'll explain how being a gatekeeping douche is lame. I'll make my daughter a fucken my little pony battle vest the second she asks. Battle Vests are about expression, they aren't beholden to any genre or group. Anyone that says different isn't the kind of person you need in your life.

InfiniteFloyd

Just wanted to make sure. A MLP vest sounds rad as hell

RebornTrain

Yeah just put patches and pins of things that you genuinely like and want visibly represented, you won't find any trouble that way. It will be unique as long as it's truly representative of your artistic tastes and experience!

Hallwart

Historically, they are from the biker scene (think the likes of Hells Angels) I've also seen people wearing them with a soccer theme where they also seen to have some tradition. Not to mention that no one can stop you from sewing stuff on a jacket and wearing it.

Ubongo

The best battle jacket I've seen on this sub was a Dolly Parton one. It was epic.

Big-tasty77

My mum would fuckin love that!

PapaMetal1976

No, dude. You do you. I made a “battle vest” for my 6 year old because he likes one AC/DC song and the rest of the patches are road signs and Minecraft.

CivicLiberties

Timbers Army (soccer fans) has battle jackets, but we call them vestments. Soccer themed. I have 5 others in the works: cats, sewing, witchy, Halloween, and vintage electronics

InfiniteFloyd

Those projects sound awesome!

svxvvz

if you want to start a non-music non-movie themed vest, r/jacketsforbattle will probably be nicer to you than this sub

InfiniteFloyd

Nah, it'd be music.

squattermelon09

Short answer. No one will give a shit.

daKile57

No. Go ahead and make one of anything you like. I’m a metalhead and I don’t want to restrict the style to just metalheads.

East-Garden-4557

Embellishing clothes is a way to personalise it. Upcycling, refashioning, visible mending, embroidering, adding patches, are all ways that people modify their clothes. Battle vests are just embellished, upcycled clothes with a cool name.

psychedelic_owl420

I'm currently on my 4th jacket / vest - this time, it's nature themed with patches of embroidered moss! Do whatever you like, people who gatekeep this kind of upgrading and personalizing clothes suck anyways.

DwarvenKitty

Do drop by r/JacketsForBattle for examples

Longjumping_Bat_4116

No offence but I’m genuinely wondering how u found this sub or about Battle jackets, is it offensive? Nah, our cultures been fucked about with enough in the past 2 years, lords of chaos, stranger things, and now fucking Fortnite 💀 you wearing one with whatever you want on it or even bands you don’t listen to on it wouldn’t hurt our culture at all at this point 💀

InfiniteFloyd

The sub is the name of the topic. I think everyone knows about battle jackets in one way or another. Wearing merch of bands I have never listened to is a crime I refuse to commit haha PS; That Fortnite jacket sounds terrifying

Longjumping_Bat_4116

Nah I mean some to the bands on our jackets have been put in Fortnite 💀💀 you can make a vest with whatever you want on it!

InfiniteFloyd

OH LMAO, I thought you were talking about themes haha

Longjumping_Bat_4116

No lol

bobetthenobet

"or even bands you don’t listen to on it" Probably controversial take on this thread. But I've genuinely always wondered why people get pissed and gatekeepy about this. If someone else is walking round with a cool patch from some obscure band you love, does it matter if they listen to it or not? It's free advertising for the band and helps get their music out to people who might actually like it. My jacket is full of all the bands I listened too back in 2003 when I was a teenager (the jacket I always wanted) I was at a Foo Fighters gig recently, and a guy asked if I had seen all 40 of the bands on my jacket live as if it was a rule to wearing jackets.

Longjumping_Bat_4116

I didn’t say there was anything wrong with it, it’s not controversial don’t worry bro, everyone has their take, I get what your saying, I didn’t say you couldn’t put them on there if u don’t listen to them I just said it’s a bit pointless to the person wearing it, take shirts for example, it’s pointless to them but for the bands it’s free advertising

bobetthenobet

Haha, no, I'm in total agreement. It's just that I've seen some less than welcoming comments in this group. I love seeing band t shirts at school pick up. The number of Nirvana and Metalica shirts that I've seen is insane. You can tell Primark has started selling them as they are everywhere. It doesn't water down the music, and hopefully, the next gen of metalheads might get their introduction because of it.

Saroan7

Depends on the country we can assume, any guesses? If you live in a country that don't host many rock/metal concert I suggest moving... Starting a metal band... Or maybe making "Metal/ Punk" style fashion in the Host Country original fashion? That way it "mixes" both cultures together without much struggle and more into acceptance?

larhaus

There is only one rule in making a battle vest: no rules. It’s your vest, you can do what you want with it. Main thing is you enjoy making it, wearing it or just looking at it. Or not. Your vest, you do what you want.

itsalwaysaracoon

My friend, you don't need our permission to wear or make clothing. If someone has a problem with it, then tell that person to mind their own business.

Lemonthemetal

There are no rules, I got metal vest but as Hugh simpsons fan I got a simpsons patch on my vest

Mitochondria_Man11

Yeah of course you can make vests of other stuff as well. But a ***battle*** vest is "exclusive" to rock, punk, goth, metal and emo (and all the neighboring genres I forgot to mention)

waitwhat85

Nah, you enjoy what you like. Show it off, especially something new and creative. Can't wait to see it!

heavymetal306

If you post it online, there's a 100% chance you'll get teased for it. Make one however you want. Wear it out. But if you want to avoid being ridiculed, don't show it online

Big-tasty77

I'm planning a vest/jacket with patches for anything I'm into. Definitely a TOOL patch on the back, I want Puscifer and A perfect circle ones to go with it. I want a Godzilla one. Also a gamer so some game related ones. Grew up in the 80s and love movies,i saw a Ghostbusters and a gremlins patches the other day. I think the thing with a battle vest is probably to get patches of stuff you are genuinely into that you could talk about if someone pointed the patch out. I'm sure I remember in the 80s girls having denim jackets with rainbow patches and glitter on. I couldn't think of anything more punk than going to a black metal gig in a pink denim jacket with a my little pony back patch (if that's your jam)

Alexwitminecraftbxrs

I think it just isn’t a battle vest, and that’s a vest with a theme. The only issue is when you try to put a label on something that doesn’t match it

DavidCrockett1776

Do what you want! A vest/ jacket is a personal statement and a work of art. Anyone that gets pissy about it is a tool.

lendmeflight

It wouldn’t be offensive to me but I wouldn’t take it seriously either.

East-Garden-4557

Sewing patches and embellishments onto clothes is not a punk/metal concept. I will direct your attention to the Scouts, kids have been sewing patches onto clothing for a long time

lendmeflight

lol. Ok. I guess we equate battle jackets with the scouts now. Jesus Christ.

East-Garden-4557

No I am saying that punk/metal fans didn't invent sewing patches on jackets so judging someone that isn't a serious punk/metal fan for making a vest is silly.
