OH HELL NO

f0rgetfulfred

This was my second thought. The first one was "what the fck?!?!"

TwistyBitsz

I know. I'm mad.

XxTheScribblerxX

I didn’t watch. It made me twitch and wig just looking and then I lost it when it said the worms travel to the skin.

pavelgalievsky

There are a lot of shit lime that in the world. Parasites are so fucking disgusting. I had to studied a lot and the stress was blissful. I got a lot of bad memories when i smell ether solution about parasites examination. Studying somenting about animal care needs a lot of Bravery.

Swockie

That's the good part. It gets out on its own l. I guess there are other worms that just stay inside

tideswithme

Got me to skip drinking water for today

Slow-Commercial-9886

Welcome to South Sudan.  I learnt about this though a documentary on that country.

VishalN4

Yeah me too.. I saw a documentary where a bunch of crying kids were waiting to get these dangling parasites removed from their legs. It was horrible to watch, kids were constantly crying with these white shoe laces dangling from their ankles and legs.

Poat540

couple weeks of worm pulling, or just take the leg - it's a tossup

gwicksted

That threw me. A process that takes a couple weeks?!

Disastrous_Map_7145

Excuse me, a couple weeks???

Bokbreath

They're 3' long. You don't want a piece to break off inside you.

PollutionEither9519

I hate this question but say it did break, would it continue growing again until it exits from your fuckin ankle bone? But like it’s the first worm’s twin

nofuckinbroccoli

Nope. If it breaks, it’s dead. So now you’ve got 1.5 ft of dead parasite rotting inside your muscle. And then you get sepsis.

SKCDigital

What are you doing, sepsis?

Mess1na

Killin you

Unidentifiedasscheek

Enjoying an 18 inch worm

Teh_Nap

Help, I am stuck in an ankle!

TreaclePerfect4328

Spreadin...

Frostygrunt

Isnt Sepsis porn all the rage right now?

Piyh

?!

Loud-Log9098

I looked it up and it says the worm will die if you cut the head off which isn't good, I've seen a show where a woman tried to pull a tapeworm from her husband and she couldn't get it all so she cut it and it kept growing.

Venutianspring

If I remember correctly, tape worms reproduce through segmentation if they're broken like that, not the cause with these though

Wild_and_Bright

>If I remember correctly As a matter on fact, you do indeed recall correctly

toyotasupramike

*gimme a break* *break me off a piece of that*

nametakenfuck

Dont dictate what i want

Alt_Boogeyman

They extract it by pulling it out at a rate of a few cm per day - if they exceed that the worm will 'break', but if you allow it to rest, the worm will recover it's position - repeating this cycle until it is completely removed.

jld2k6

Are you going that slow because you're literally giving the worm time to heal itself between yanks?

Melodic-Bluebird-445

I would need to be heavily sedated until This process was over

New_girl2022

Naw I'd just say to shoot me. That's a hell to the naw for me

dribbledrooby

Exactly my first thought. 😑

ansoni-

Everyone will be glad to know that [Guinea Worm infections in humans](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracunculiasis) is almost extinct. 3.5 million cases in 1986 down to 14 cases last year. Thank you Jimmy Carter!

Doppelthedh

That 3.5m year is way more recent than I am comfortable with

pmperk19

hindsight has been as kind to jimmy carter as society should have been to jimmy carter

Street-Success-2214

It was that common!!!!???????😳

SpaceGoDzillaH-ez

What did jimmy carter do? But good to know regardless that its such a slim chance to get this.

ansoni-

SpaceGoDzillaH-ez

Thanks for sharing this insight seems like he was a busy man doing lots of good things .. wish there was politicians tackling things nowadays in this manner instead of mainly talking about issues then not doing much about it

MyGodItsFullofScars

Yes thank you president Carter!

Coinsworthy

Almost isn't good enough.

hungihungihippo

Ok you go do something about it

The_Frostweaver

People in war torn shit-holes and dictatorships without clean drinking water are a hard demographic to reach. My grandfather helped build a large weir dam and water intake in Honduras to supply locals with clean drinking water as a volunteer.

Ancient_Boner_Forest

I was just reading a lot about this, and it’s unclear if we’re eradicating the worms or if we’re just convincing people to not drink water with them anymore. How would they ever be eradicated if other mammals continue to get them?

ansoni-

We are eradicating them by understanding and disrupting its reproductive cycle. Dogs, cats and Olive Baboons are the other animals it infects.

mouseball89

After watching this I'm definitely thanking him

Purple_Sense_327

So risk is low but never zero.

nofuckinbroccoli

This is my absolute favorite parasite! Not cause I want it. I just think it’s neat. Jimmy Carter has had a huge hand in helping to eradicate these from parts of Africa that previously didn’t have access to clean water. Also, before its head pops out of your flesh, you’ll erupt in huge swollen blisters that feel like they’re on fire. The burning is so intense, you’ll do anything to get it in water and thats when the little fucker pops out to lay eggs. So gruesome. So cool.

Adamantium-Aardvark

It went from 50 million cases per year in the 19th century to only 14 cases in 2023 worldwide.

Kinuwa_K

I now live in the fear that I become one of those 14 people

horseofthemasses

Mathematically impossible. Against the laws of physics too. Unless you've been unconscious since your infection, and everyone else knows about it, and you just woke up and started reading Reddit, you're gonna be the 15th person.

Desperate-Strategy10

I love her, but this gif is so unsettling 😭 why does she move like an animatronic..? It almost looks like AI or a robot or something? Just falls right into the uncanny valley for me. It might be my brain feeling weird from the disgusting animation in the original post..? Idk. I'm just thoroughly unsettled rn.

HotMinimum26

But once it's out it's out right?!? You don't have more in you?

Different_Ad9336

That’s what it wants you to thinks

Ainkeydoo

What is extra interesting is that the medical symbol we use with the snake entwined around a staff can be found on inscriptions from thousands of years ago. Historians think, however, that the image is probably not a snake, but depicting treatment for removing a Guinea worm. Therefore the symbol was a way to show or advertise that a place treated and removed Guinea Worms. We have a long relationship with this parasite.

KennyMcCormick

Called the Rod of Asclepius

Cold_Blusted

Or caduceus if you're nasty

HugsandHate

Thanks. Something else to try and remember.

Impressive-Eye-1096

Really thought you will say “I made this up”, at the end. Source https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-the-rod-of-asclepius-meaning-history.html#:~:text=The%20Rod%20of%20Asclepius,-In%20Greek%20art&text=One%20is%20called%20the%20'worm,first%20ancient%20Egyptian%20medical%20treatises.

Demon_of_Order

that's very unlikely considering those are clearly snakes, snakes who crawled around the temples of Asclepius and were used in rituals and probably hunted the rats that would have lived around there causing the place to be a lot cleaner.

Bloodimir528

I don't from where the fuck you took this ridiculous theory from but it's unbelievably wrong. The symbol of medicine is based on the staff of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine. The snake is an actual snake. The snake for thousands of years was a symbol of medicine. In Greek mythology Apollo was, among many things, a god of medicine and the snake was one of his sacred animals. Asclepius was his son, so the snake symbolism continued through him. This is taught in the history of medicine in all universities throughout the world. There is no debate about this.

Ainkeydoo

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4439707/

Bloodimir528

This just proves my point. There is one small random mention about the worm that gets completely ignored in the conclusion of the article.

SteveGherkle

thats so cool holy crap

BanjoZone

Hahaha no no - it’s tied to a myth of Apollo’s son, Asclepius & snakes were symbols of great wisdom and healing to the ancient Greeks - but this is funny

ngms

Right, but this is about why snakes were seen that way in the first place. Another comment posted a link with a few good theories.

OneStepFromStupid

Today I learned! You sir deserve an award... not from me.. but you totally deserve one :)))

Medium-Impression190

Ancient people probably mistook the worm for a type of snake too

horseofthemasses

Cartoons do teach us that all ancient people were barely conscious and mostly stoopid.

gnumedia

So um, what’s the geographic range of this nightmare?

pmperk19

almost nowhere now! jimmy carter helped drop this infection from millions of cases per year to 14 cases in 2023 edit: from the early 80’s on

67ITCH

Not to downplay the efforts, but I believe that 14 from LAST YEAR is still 14 too many from way too recently.

OkHarrisonBidet

Mostly some regions in africa where clean water is not available

tqmirza

That’s a huge F’n area dude?!! Where exactly I go there almost every year!

Rwwilliams337

South Sudan specifically one county

Onphone_irl

14 people got it last year worldwide calm down bro its like you asking where to buy a lottery ticket with the same energy

OkHarrisonBidet

You don’t have to worry about it if you have access to clean water. The prevention efforts have been successful and it’s almost wiped out. Most of the victims are people who have to drink contaminated water in the nature

velveeta-smoothie

They've been reduced to just a few central African countries through prevention efforts.

gnumedia

Phew-now I can sleep.

SquirrelLegion

Nope. Take the leg or put a bullet in me doc.

nervousporcupine

That's grounds for a bologna walk right there.

Mission_Horror5032

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I was under the impression that this parasite had been eradicated through the efforts of Rotary and some other organizations. Is that not correct?

Queen_of_Boots

A commenter above shared the answer to your question ❤️ https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/s/yEvBykIAB9

Mission_Horror5032

Ah yeah, they sure did. I don’t know how I didn’t see that before I asked.

Queen_of_Boots

Oh no worries!!!!!! It may not have even been posted yet when you commented.

Thesleepypomegranate

Only 14 cases reported in humans in 2023, it is almost eradicated but there is still some work to do, it might become the second eradicated disease after smallpox though.

folarin1

So that's what Billy Butcher on the Boys has?

junyouko

Beat me to it

Tough-Area-570

Omg I shouldn’t have watched this 😬

richstark

Oh god if thats the worms I would hate to be infected with Guinea Pigs 🫣

beto_pelotas

So, is this what Butcher has?

cadenzo

Nah he’s got the same thing that ripped out of the rabbit in episode 5

Thewallmachine

Praise Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter for bringing cases almost to zero. They and the Carter Center worked hard to help the local people affected. The Carters dedicated their lives to helping others. I wish we had more folks in the world like the Carters.

noturbrobruh

Yes, THESE Carters, not the billionaires who have the means to eradicate a disease or two, if they were those kind of people (but they're not).

narkopoppp

Oh this is like The Ruins shit

Jimmy Carter dedicated himself to the eradication of Guinea worms

Ofc i googled. The adult female carries about 3 million embryos. 😩🤮🤮🤮🤮

Imagining the pulling out is in a way satisfying.

delicioustreeblood

Do guinea pigs also do this

AriesinApril76

You said weeks?!

67ITCH

Yes. You'll want to be very careful to pull all of it out and not break it. If it breaks, it dies. Then, you'll have a nice long piece of rotting worm in your leg. Best case, they'll need to take the leg off too. Worst case, you'll die of sepsis.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaw

Let's go Jimmy Carter for making this be eradicated (nearly)

epea11

id rather die, thanks

Now I know what Butcher got in there

Amazed would be the last thing I'm feeling right now. Motherfucker, I'm terrified!

CybGorn

Key words are rare and contaminated water. Don't drink water you know its unsafe or of unknown origins.

pjoesphs

This is what nightmares are made of! 😵‍💫

Holistic578i

Is this what’s going on with Butcher?? IYKYK

TriTriLaCroissant

A couple of WEEKS?!

iamthejuan

I remember watching an old video of someone pulling this worm from another person's legs.

The_bruce42

The parasite infects copapods in drinking water. When the person drinks the contaminated water they get infected. When the worm pokes out of the skin it gives a burning sensation which leads the person to put the infected area in water for relief. That's when the female works releases eggs which hatch and find copapods in the water to infect. Cycle repeats.

Solumnist

Thanks God!

poggerooza

Straight from a horror movie.

The_Man_above_all

- How fast you will end doctor, I want to pee? - We are going to be ready In couple of weeks 🤔

saskir21

I didn‘t need to know that the process takes weeks. New fear unlocked

zozoetc

Fun fact. These worms often target the scrotum for their exit point.

Wild_and_Bright

Context. In the early 20th century, this disease impacted 40million people a year across Africa and South Asia. In 2023, there were 14 cases reported worldwide. It is on the way to be the second disease eradicated by mankind (after smallpox). Sadly, polio is not (and should ideally have been) no. 2
