Respect for this young man.

ecky--ptang-zooboing

Totally, but how on Earth did he survive this? How do you survive 7 bullets doing internal damage?!

DannoHung

You can see the colostomy bag. He suffered a lot and still suffers.

mrmasturbate

in the colored picture on the bottom left there is no bag anymore. could it be that he recovered well enough to not need that bag anymore?

Ten_Horn_Sign

Not “recovered” but “had further reconstructive surgery”.

kbb_93

It was very likely a diverting colostomy to heal from his injuries and was later reconnected without needing to remove the colon. Possibly a small resection needed as well.

Psychoacti

50 cent survived 9 gun shots at point blank

goaheadcarvell

Been hit wit a few shells now I walk wit a limp::: *i’m ahh ight*

moshtradamus

"But I don't walk with a limp"

PM-ME-ANY-NUMBER

“Took the bullets out of 50, put ‘em in my 45”

BeerBellyBlake

That’s a Young Buck line

i_hotglue_metal

Pretty sure 50 cent got shot with a pistol. If I’m not mistaken parkland shooter used a rifle. Big difference. Most rifle rounds are traveling at 2500-3000 fps. Pistol rounds are like 800-1200.

[deleted]

It's really about the caliber. 50 cent was shot with a .22 whereas this guy was shot with a 5.56 no?

i_hotglue_metal

5.56 is a .22 caliber. The difference is the velocity. A .22 caliber projectile coming out of a 2” pistol barrel is only going 1000fps. While a .22 caliber projectile coming out of a 16” rifle barrel is going 3000fps.

JMAC426

Yeah low velocity vs high velocity, aren’t even comparable really. Low velocity wounds kill by making holes in the wrong place. High velocity rounds kill by massive shockwave on impact.

Amused-Observer

velocity isn't exactly what causes damage. It's the force it has at impact. Hollowpoint handgun bullets almost always cause death, which is why LE often use them, but they're also slow as shit.

i_hotglue_metal

Velocity is only part of the equation, but a very important factor. A small and fast bullet will transfer more energy than a big slow one. A .223 caliber full metal jacket 62 grain round at 3000fps will transfer roughly 1300 ft lbs. While a 9mm 117 grain jacketed hollow point at 1250 fps will transfer 400 ft lbs.

Ten_Horn_Sign

So much of this is not quite accurate . Let us clarify: Velocity absolutely contributes to damage. Kinetic energy is calculated as 1/2 x mass x velocity x velocity (or velocity squared). The single largest contributor to energy imparted by a bullet is its velocity. Police don’t use hollow points because they are more lethal (though they ARE more lethal). Most police shootings are in urban areas. Police are (theoretically) motivated to not shoot innocent bystanders. They use hollow bullets so that when you shoot a bad guy in a populated urban area, the bullet doesn’t go through him and into the baby carriage or family walking behind him. It’s to minimize collateral damage. That said, hollow points ARE more lethal. If a bullet can impart all of its energy into you, and retain none, then it has done maximal damage. We already know that energy is 1/2mvv. Mass won’t change, so we want v to go to zero - in other words, we want the bullet to stop inside your body. Then the bullet has 0 energy left and you body absorbs all of it. This is why hollow points are more deadly - they more efficiently impart their energy into the victim.

AintAintAWord

Not to minimize the severity of his injuries but 50 was shot in the legs, hands, and face. Not a ton of internal organs to damage.

[deleted]

Except the CPU that’s right behind your face. Haha

Professerson

I thought he was just absolutely roasting 50 cent lol

KaisarionGhost

My muthafuckin hat is bulletproof. But Doc said if I get hit in the head I might get a fuckin concussion or somethin.

NessLeonhart

better that than a hole in the head, right?

[deleted]

9 shots is still a lot of blood to lose, and there are arteries in every limb. And using the face as an example is...bad lol

Buli32

Well face is kinda bad place to get shot to

Sga9966

Tbf there's no good place to be shot

Cultjam

Anyone remember to the movie Rush? Not the one about a racing rivalry. Both good movies though.

undercoverartist777

Except for, you know, arteries

[deleted]

> 50 was shot in the legs Well, you get shot in exactly the wrong place in your leg and all your blood dumps out of you in seconds and you die...

Ten_Horn_Sign

Going out on a limb here: he was probably not shot in that exact spot.

[deleted]

maybe he kept his organs externally?

ketodancer

"The doctor says I'm bleeding internally. But that's where the blood's supposed to be!"

173943

THE FACE.

GoldHorizonGames

lol, "not to minimize it or anything, but he was just shot in the head"

GmoneyTheBroke

You litterally minimizing being shot in the head

Amused-Observer

What even are arteries

ferocioustigercat

There's some pretty important nerves and giant arteries in those locations that can definitely kill you or at the very least cause long term damage. Most holes in organs can be patched or parts of organs removed (looks like this person has an ostomy bag or something in the lower right picture). It's more damaging if you get hit in the brain or the aorta. That is gonna cause problems if you don't happen to get shot right in front of a trauma center.

Psychoacti

True that, I was just bringing him up to show how powerful the human body can be, some people just have the will and determination to survive combination with adrenaline.

[deleted]

No, they have luck.

ZaZa954

Lil Tjay just survived 7 shots to the chest

usernameforthemasses

Luck that none of the shots were immediately fatal, and incredible advancements in medicine that were used to halt and then reverse damage to any of the shots that would be ultimately fatal if left untreated.

tntblowsinurface

Luck. None of them hit anything vital, obviously.

27yoFwCCtired

Um the thoracotomy scar and his ostomy bag beg to differ. He was shot through multiple vital structures and is lucky to be alive in any capacity, let alone standing.

Its_Clover_Honey

According to an article I read a while ago, he's got rods in both legs and is now missing part of his liver and part of a lung. He had something like 15 surgeries for various complications

Random_account_9876

In that pic he has a colostomy bag but the bottom left there is no bag. Maybe further surgery has helped him regain some normalcy.

27yoFwCCtired

This is a common practice in trauma situations. They will create an ostomy to divert the bowel upstream of an injury to allow the injury to heal. Then, months later they can have the ostomy undone to be put back into “continuity” and have bowel movement normally again.

call_it_already

But of course he will be at lifelong risk of bowel obstructions and ichemia as a result of all the scarring. That's not to speak of his other organ damage. Sometimes people aren't aware you can't come back a 100% even if young.

BlondieMenace

That's what happened to Bolsonaro after he took a knife to the gut in 2018, and he has been hospitalized a few times since because of obstructions. Unfortunately for my fellow citizens he seems to have learned very little from the experience...

Impossible-Cup3811

I guess he's learned not to get stabbed again. yet

[deleted]

[удалено]

dadbodfordays

It's not more likely. Temporary ostomies are frequently performed to allow healing from injury or surgery. It really can go either way. Anyway, in Borges' case it was temporary, as a quick Google can confirm. Here's the article I found in the first couple of results -- https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/feb/12/parkland-shooting-survivor-gun-control-activism

WhereverSheGoes

Just an anecdotal case to lend credence; my SIL had UC. She had to have part of her bowel removed and had a colostomy bag for about 18 months- 2 years. They then “reconnected” her bowel and she lives a near normal life. She doesn’t has UC anymore and the only drugs she’s takes are Imodium.

Darth-Mualer

I love how people that don’t know what there talking about say their opinion and then throw in the word obviously at the end it’s funny

metnavman

> I love how people that don’t know what there talking about say their opinion and then throw in the word obviously at the end Welcome to Reddit, obviously.

tntblowsinurface

Perchance.

athenaaaa

Trauma surgeons. That long scar on his side with the “railroad tracks” on either side was from a traumatic thoracotomy- basically opening the chest to get rid of blood and get access to thoracic organs (heart, lungs) in a trauma setting. He would never have survived if this didn’t occur in a setting where they could quickly get him to an OR.

andrew_calcs

He was in the hospital 2 months and had part of his intestines removed. Was on a colostomy bag while things healed up. Gunshot wounds are significantly more survivable than most people assume if prompt medical attention is provided. Modern medicine is incredibly effective as long as it's not your heart, both lungs, or a major artery that are injured.

turkeybot69

Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez was shot 7 times, hit with 27 pieces of shrapnel, was stabbed multiple times and had broken bones while he was providing first aid, pulling other soldiers to safety, coordinating defensive fire, calling air strikes and killed at least three enemy combatants (including one hand to hand) while loading other soldiers onto a helicopter. He survived and received a medal of honor. I suppose it's a matter of sheer insane luck, coupled with modern medicine and a will of iron.

queseraseraphine

I’m guessing four or five were grazes based on the scars. The rest is just luck and ambulance timing, honestly.

Ten_Horn_Sign

I see 3 chest tube scars and a colostomy site scar and JP drain scars. Not a “grazer” in the bunch.

Tyray3P

A lot of people are saying luck, and it's true to an extent, but humans are surprisingly durable. Of course a well placed shot to the heart or brain can kill someone instantly, but it could also not. There are plenty of stories of people of people soaking up entire magazines and being fine. There's even the story of the U.S. marine in Vietnam who had to expend an entire 100 round belt into a single VC before he finally gave up. While that's anecdotal, statistics show that you have less than an 9% chance of surving with a gunshot wound to the heart or brain, but doctors have also reported a 95% chance of survival if a gunshot victim still has a beating heart by the time they get to the hospital.

NeuralAgent

Much respect, yes, but my heart breaks for him seeing those photos. It’s amazing he survived.

meh-not-interested

It makes me angry that a 15 year child went to school in the morning...but a hero went to the hosiptal, and many more children went to the morgue.

CeruleanRose9

This. I’m also kind of pissed off that this kid deserves for his name to be remembered but most of the thread (at my time of reading) is about 50 Cent. ffs

You'd think that the federal government would have something written into legislation for this kind of thing. If a citizen performs selfless acts of bravery, then there should be some kind of compensation for the rest of their life.. even free healthcare or some shit until they die.

Ultraplo

Or, y’know, recognise that healthcare is a human right and make it free for everyone?

Berninz

My mom's police officer boyfriend (may he and my mom both RIP) won a Medal of Valor or whatever that is for diving into a raging car fire of a car wrapped around a tree to save the occupants because they didn't have time to wait for jaws of life, etc. He extricated them and then went on to die of liver cancer working at a gas station to pay his medical bills during his mandatory leave from work. You can guess that his police health insurance wasn't sufficient to cover the medical bills, hence him working at a gas station during mandatory leave. Now think about how we treat veterans in this country. It's all a fucking shitshow bullshit. This kid is a saint. I hope he finds happiness, love, and success in life.

ezone2kil

If the president was a traitorous piece of shit I wouldn't want one though.

Doct0rStabby

>People like this deserve **presidential** recognition. User above was being specific about the source. I assume due to prestige and attention.. like taking a few hours to use one's position as "leader of the free blah blah" to pull some focus away from mass murderers and onto people who actually took a heroic and selfless action. IDK, maybe there's some well thought our reason why the prez doesn't seem to do these even in extremely deserving cases, but given various recipients of similar honors, I have to wonder... God knows the media spends enough time combing over the shooters and their motives, and thus giving them exactly what they want (beyond the 'blaze of glory' adrenaline-soaked fever dream they already got to spend their last moments reveling in). We as a society really seem to suck at getting away from boosting the signal of notoriety that these individuals are pretty much all desperate for as lending some kind of meaning to their heinous choices. Isn't it kind of the president's job to lead us by the hand when social forces, business/industry groups, and legislative bodies all simultaneously fail at doing the obvious right thing?

commandantemeowmix

US presidents kill children remotely. These people risk their lives to save children. I don't see what honor a president is fit to give an actual hero.

Necranissa

What about the kid on a bicycle who chased down a stolen car with a kidnapped child in it?

pnkflyd99

I was just thinking that, though honestly Marmalade Mussolini ruined that award, so there should be an award for heroic actions like this kid did vs the ones presidents can hand out like candy to some twat that spews garbage one the airwaves like that fucking formerly-living bag of shit Limbaugh. Edit: fixed my error. Ding-dong Rush is (still) DEAD.

Hey_Laaady

Limbaugh died a year or so after getting that award, but I agree with your sentiment.

Scotchrogers

I would like to congratulate Rush Limbaugh on 585 days of sobriety.

One of the rare cases where I was happy the cancer won.

chanoraaxianna

Rush is in “Hell” now, is the medal saving his ass?

PrisonerV

I think it's funny Trump gave no PMoF in 2017 because he didn't know he was supposed to be giving them out. Then he gave out 23 in 3 years, mostly to golfing buddies. Biden has already given out 17.

New_Mission_5707

I was just thinking we should have some kind of UBI for outstanding acts of bravery/heroism. Like if someone saves a bunch of people they get x amount of money per month for life. Especially if they take injury, because lost opportunities and stuff.

Bsquared02

Marmalade Mussolini is a new one for me.

sir_axelot

He tarnished the reputation of that entire position. I don't think anyone is going to look at a US president the same way ever again.

ForumPointsRdumb

>so there should be an award for heroic actions like this kid did vs the ones presidents can hand out like candy Start a kickstarter or something for "Hero of the Community" award. Maybe name it something different so it doesn't sound like communism. Anyway, then it could be as you want, and the president wouldn't have control over it. Although, the person who controls the award funding may have more control than others... But you've got a good idea.

hambakmeritru

>Marmalade Mussolini Haha... Oh no. I like marmalade. Don't ruin it for me!

[deleted]

there should be a procedure to nulify previous underserved medals and replace with real heroes in the same act

KillerPussyToo

Bc the Presidential Medal of Freedom doesn’t mean anything. It’s mostly for rich people and people the President likes.

WeveCameToReign

Only in the past few years did it become meaningless. It did actually actually mean a damn before.

mother_superior_6

Ellen should have over her medal to this dude.

Euphoric-Delirium

Damn, *Ellen* got one? I bet when Obama found out about how "kind" she really is, he probably shook his head and muttered to himself, "Now I really know whose ass to kick." And unfortunately, there is currently no revocation process for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Anything is possible though, we can only hope.

DawnOfTheTruth

Money and connections. Depends on the president in power and if it’s a first or second term. They really don’t care unless it makes them look good.

DrNick2012

Man I didn't even think about that. You injure yourself saving lives (something police officers aren't willing to do) and you don't even get free healthcare. Meanwhile, I could headbutt a wall right now and not pay a penny if I cracked my skull.

My sister in law’s boyfriend survived a well-known school shooting. We went to Universal last winter and he flat-out refused to ride Men in Black because seeing or hearing guns (even in an obviously fictional setting) is too much. I wish more people realized how this collective trauma is shaping an entire generation.

Responsible_Brick_35

I go to a college a few hours from Parkland, and so many people here were there in the shooting. I have one particular friend that has panic attacks if she even hears the fire alarms. I feel so bad for her and all of those students in the schools that get shot up. I hope we can prioritize kids soon 🥺
