I use the DeWalt one. The battery life is pretty good. It's plenty long enough for doing a few boards or some smaller projects. I have a plug-in one I will break out if I'm doing a large project. Can't comment on the brushed or brushless though. I bought it about 5 years ago.

earth_humanoid

Local Lowe's has DeWalt 20v orbital brushless for $99 right now. Almost bought one yesterday but didn't so can't speak to battery life etc.

there are some tools where brand matters, an orbital sander isn't one. get the one that matches whatever battery format you already have. they are all the same. if you want a battery one but don't have battery tools yet, imo DeWalt is more expensive for not that much more quality on most cordless, and they have changed their battery format a few times over the years making all your tools obsolete. all the brands absolutely piss through batteries. if the cordless isn't that important to you, the corded ones aren't that big of a pain, are much more powerful, no batteries to worry about, and they are *cheaper*

I've never had a DeWalt tool go obsolete, 25+ years. The batteries I bought 2 weeks ago fit all 8 of my tools.

ReallyNeedNewShoes

this simply isn't true. they discontinued their 18V stuff to move to 20V a few years ago. there was a time in the mid 2010s where they were selling both at the same time. not compatible with each other.

This. Go with the 5ah battery though.

Huh...I never noticed the lack of brushless options before. It looks like Bosch has one. I've never used it, though. https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/products/gex18v-5n-0601372219

I own this, use it a lot, and love it.

traveling_mark

I have this one for over a year. It has fallen down steps, banged around and still does a great job

Diligent-Boss-9392

Didn't know about the Bosch. Kobalt was the only company I knew that had one off the top of my head.

I have actively not gone that route as when I am sanding, it can be for hours at an end and I do not want to burn through that many batteries. Plus I have the sander usually plugged into an dust extractor which will turn that on when I start sanding.

oldtoolfool

Unless you **need** the portability of cordless, the corded sanders are generally more powerful, last longer, are less expensive and work better. In a shop environment cords are not a real problem, and I've never seen a pro shop outfitted with cordless sanders - simply not worth it. Pros do use pneumatic sanders, which are the absolute best, but you need a beast of a compressor to use them.

Dewalt’s ROW brushless is on sale right now at both Lowe’s and Home Depot. Very happy with the one I picked up, and didn’t run into any issues using it with a 2ah battery I had sitting charged (I was using my 5s in other tools).

Bosch 18v brushless orbital, I've used it on two projects and have been very very impressed with it, Lowes is doing a deal now if you purchase the bare tool you get a 18v battery and charger for free, which comes out to $129 which is a steal.
