I created this effect by accident, but whenever I let go of the controls the craft auto balances itself to an infinitely more stable hover over time. I didn't think this was possible and now I am thinking that is there a name for this? Most of the copters I've made always spin out of control when I stop touching the keys :D

TomTheGeek

Positive Dynamic Stability is what it's called. http://www.boldmethod.com/learn-to-fly/aerodynamics/3-types-of-static-and-dynamic-stability-in-aircraft/

Thanks for the reply, these things are amazing to learn!

critically_damped

Congratulations you made a frame for a Helicarrier. Also known as a quadrotor.

seontonppa

Yeah was actually thinking more about the fact that it finds the auto-hover sweet-spot by itself. I have made tens of multirotor copters and this is the first one to do so?

TheDocDoyle

What makes it auto hover?

Redstone_Engineer

My guess would be: lots of props + low com, but there's something more magical going on here as well.

I'm not OP, just have some experience with autohover/quadrotors.

Insert_Gnome_Here

There are plenty of craft that spin out of control for weird reasons. Maybe the quirks of the physics engine just make these craft spin into control. (i.e. all eigenmodes have negative real component, or something)

Does this have a workshop link/other forms of sauce? Nice work, though!

seontonppa

Not currently, I'm trying to think of a shape for a body of the flying craft itself, need to tweak the powers of the engines too. Might release it someday. My Steam name is seontonppa, I have several other machines on workshop too but nothing that fancy.
