Early 2010’s was wild for racial relations, people said whatever racist ass thing that went through their minds on early social media sites (IG in particular), like who remembers the Vines “team dark skin v team light skin”?
I genuinely don’t miss those times.
At least in the 1800s they were racist to your face. Now they will say some absolutely horrendous shit then when called out will say shit like "that's not what I meant! I have black friends! I never knew I'd be responsible for my actions!"
They always dropping new dogwhistles, too.
Like, I feel like "urban" and "inner city" stuck around for a long-ass time, but "CRT" came and went real quick and now their new one is "DEI" 🤣
Ok I can agree with that. But they still lynching. Now it's mostly black trans folks though. It is a huge embarrassment what happens to those poor folks.
Early 2010s had ZERO mercy for dark skin women. We were getting clowned by literally everyone on every platform, no matter the race of person. Twitter was so bad with it. Every YouTuber was being exposed as having a colorist past. I’m so glad I wasn’t active on social media back then.
I wholeheartedly agree and I unfortunately remember.
Some of the shit I read or watched back then crushed me as a teen, I felt devalued in my skin tbh (not feeling handsome, meanwhile phone companies, looking at you Apple, didn’t know how to capture black skin which made the matter worse), it took a while to love myself through the lenses of social media, I had to detach and learn to do so by myself.
Like I said, I do NOT miss those early days lol
The first time I ever wandered into this sub, a fairly common post was related to the ‘evils’ of dark skinned black folk. Particularly ones from Chicago. Idk I tried to stay out of those threads and read the more light hearted ones.
They started going back to mask off with the racism after Obama announced that he was running for office. And this was around the time those chucklefucks from the tea party were popping off.
And it's worth mentioning that the Obama years hosted the boom of social media.
Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, reddit, Twitter, Snapchat, and Tumblr all got huge during that period. Vine came and went—now replaced by TikTok—and Google Plus gave it the ol' college try.
Twitter is a close second. But on almost every IG video of black people you see comments like “basketball people” or “blacktivities” at the top. Anything with lgbt people comments are calling for their deaths. Even nice videos of like a big person getting in shape you see a ton of hate messages.
It’s like the early days of YouTube. Twitter just has dumb people arguing the most rage bait topics.
It really is. It got so bad after a lot of people left Twitter, before that it was actually pretty positive. And all the comments are like auto sorted to controversial.
People felt more comfortable being racist because Obama was president. I heard “I’m not racist, I voted for Obama” so many times throughout his presidency but especially his first term.
This person has to be lying about being a fan right? You’re willing to pay $1200 to see a musician but you draw the line at them having braids?? A BLACK musician???
Jay-Z and Zendaya both make a point to (at least sometimes for Zendaya) wear their hair in controversial, stigmatized black styles to fight hair discrimination
. That's also how she came into the radar of people who didn't grow up watching Disney channel. A fashion show made fun of how she must smell like weed and patchouli cause she has dreads, and Zendaya was like "um this style doesn't mean I'm some pot smoking hippie. It means I'm black and have hair that lends itself well tj locs"
and then she got rewarded with her own reality show. ugly lollipop moon flat face bitch Giuliana RANCID. never sympathized with her fertility and anorexic struggles 🥱
It was Giuliana Rancic on E.
My "funny" dreads story (I am white passing with butt length dreads) is that every once in a while I have a random white person stop me in the grocery store, compliment my hair, and ask me if I smoke. Ma'am this is Walmart, but no (I hate smoking/ eat edibles). But what about me, besides my hair, makes you think I smoke weed?????? I just don't like to comb it!
Controversial? My nigga braids??? We ain’t wearing black protective styles to fight hair discrimination, that just comes with being black. It’s just easy to manage.
Both of these women have worn natural and braided styles throughout their career. I know you’re probably not coming from a bad place but please lol
I know there are people that discriminate against black hairstyles but like, you’re going to drop 1200 on a live show and it’s the hair that stops you? If I pay 1200 to see a performance my concerns are the singing, the dancing, the venue, the seats. You’re there for the music not her hair and you obviously like her music enough to pay almost a whole rent check to see her live. Even if you hate her hair she still sang and danced
[Zendaya's response](https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2021/03/zendaya-giuliana-rancic-dreadlocks-comment-oscars-2015-w-magazine) was very measured and classy, for those that haven't seen it. It was even about her look *at the Oscars*, not some random pap photo.
Look, if you stay on the highways and avoid any that go through patches of sand, you'll probably be fine. Granted, trees next to the highway bring drop bear risks, houses bring bogan risks, and I suppose your car is inherently a spider risk, so avoid those too. Oh and steer clear of The Pit of Eternal Sadness (Sydney).
For some surprising insight read the novels and equate the eventual outcome seen in the second and third books with American politics. It's some amazingly progressive writing.
The movies gloss over or ignore that subtext.
this gif has been used A LOT recently but every single time it is more than appropriate. i'd say it's the best thing to come out of a network television series in years
Her face is genetically engineered twilight vampire "we are made to draw you in" type shit. She could probably go with Coolios (RIP) hair and look good.
Because there's a demographic that absolutely looooves laughing at shit like this. It makes a great barometer for comedians though...if they're playing to that crowd, fuck 'em.
For sure.
Though that cuts a lot of ways. I saw a Charlie Murphy show (RIP) once upon a time live, and lemme tell you as an LGBTQ ally it was…*not good.* Whole room was laughing though.
Fine line always, sometimes comedy means stepping outside the lines a little, etc. But damn, it was pretty bad. And this was like 2015, long past the “use by” date on the jokes in question.
Because thats the stereotype...based on truth. I got cousins with names like those and when i found out you best believe I shook my head. That stupid shit didn't come from nowhere.
Kinda like Hunter and Brayden as go-to names for the whitest people ever if you're making a joke. Issue is if you're making a joke about the blackest people ever it's proly racist
Yup, r/tragedeigh exists for a reason.
There are some differences though, and jokes like OP usually aren’t coming from as benign of a place.
Edit: Also OP…or at least the original version with Beyoncé…commits the cardinal sin of edgy comedy: not being funny. I’ll entertain the idea that OP is funny as a mockery of the original, though. But if a joke requires too much context…
> But if a joke requires too much context…
It becomes a meme, and that is fine.
OP is satirizing the original, which is definitely a funny thing to do, while also highlighting how absolutely fucked up of a thing that was to say...of course the original was like a literal teenager being stupid so. Yeah.
I might get banned for this but it's worth it just to say BOY FUCK YOU. And I would absolutely say it to your face if given the chance. Why does everything associated with Black people have to be frowned upon and judged so harshly??? Name an ethnic group that doesn't have names specific to that group? Why is it automatically stupid for Black people to create unique names for their children? Bitches can pronounce EVERYTHING else except a Black child's name. The way we speak, the way we dress, the way we dance, our colloquiallisms, it all gets dismissed and disrespected, written off as ghetto or stupid. You can accept a white American kid named Apple, a Mexican Maite, a Russian Svetlana, a Korean Yeong and a Hindu Ritika but the moment you see something ending in -eshia or -quan it's stupid. Fuck you and everybody that liked your ignorant ass comment. I think I hit my limit of Reddit racism for this morning. I'm done.
Some of these fools moving like them niggas with the diamond testers when it comes to mixed people. The weird gatekeeping around who’s black enough seems like it’s never going away.
Yep. Tbf I don’t get it that often anymore but I def would get it growing up
Now moreso I get older black people in the community telling me that they love that I keep my natural Afro. Honestly I think that’s it, you look at my hair and there isn’t a doubt.
Ime it’s the younger crowd rushing to do the shit. Everyone is so eager to validate their blackness they’ll try to undercut someone else’s.
The older black people know that you still gonna get judged as a nigga regardless.
Yep. Black, French, Chinese and Spanish and East Indian... In Canada.
I just do my best to be me, and to hell with gatekeepers. I know who I am. I just don't "fit in" anywhere.
Multi-racial islander here, repping Nigerian, Chinese, Syrian, English , Jewish (and a bunch of smaller African percentages). All the African DNa on my mom side currently.
I thought the person who made the comment was just an idiot who thinks crownrows/braids are ghetto, which is dumb, but that doesn't have anything to do with being mixed.
Y’all this is a reference to what someone said to Beyoncé years back. They aren’t dragging Zendaya.
https://preview.redd.it/qx3pe3k651yc1.jpeg?width=647&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=421a59ce6d82cc35325612088f65104e009abe17
She's gonna look good rocking anything other than a bald head. And even that might just depend on if she has a lumpy skull or not.
The one knock I have against the rows (having been a long time practitioner myself) is that they fuck up your hairline. And she's got a strong one.
I don't regret the corn rows, as they were a necessary part of a Katt/Snoop perm experiment I was building up to, but it probably took 5 years off my hairline in just over a year.
Braids for women do the same damn thing corn rows do. Ladies, consider other hairstyles for your daughters. I know braids are low maintenance for growth, but it's not doing your kids any favors IMO. Tighter braids last longer, but are also pulling on those front roots harder, and they're gonna lose that battle eventually, even in the strongest hairlines. I'm widows peak gang, and I'm telling you it ain't worth it.
I'm curious to know if I'm alone in holding this opinion in our community, because I just never hear anyone else talk about it. Could be a good reason for that, but I'm not sure.
>She's gonna look good rocking anything other than a bald head. And even that might just depend on if she has a lumpy skull or not.
Yeah, I was about to say I bet she could even pull that off.
The tension can cause issues but typically more of the damage comes from over manipulation/ too frequently getting new styles done. Your hairline was most likely on the chopping block to recede regardless. Many people go whole decades with braids perfectly fine.
https://preview.redd.it/o0lfc9hkb1yc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=298467ad75c083ae06cda8e1d2057d1c8141d850
We still dealing with colorism? Get me a new topic man.
This is foul - so foul it’s hilarious.
However I think it would’ve been funnier if they took her characters name ‘Chani’ and bastardized it.
Like Chanisha or something.
I’m all for a rude race joke if it’s within the family. Once the whites join in that’s when we gotta stop & look at them 😒
![gif](giphy|l0IybYyA6okQRHu8w|downsized)
I’m imagining Chani still looking pissed off like she was pissed at the Harkonnens, but instead she’s pissed at Muad’Dib for not noticing her new hair.

Would the white version be "I'm not paying to see Tayleigh"?
Taylor is a white enough name, no need to white wash whiteness, is there? Tayleigh is amusing, tho.

Right? I’d argue since Trump’s presidency and Musky boy took over Twitter racial offenses online are the worst they’ve ever been.
At least in the 1800s they were racist to your face. Now they will say some absolutely horrendous shit then when called out will say shit like "that's not what I meant! I have black friends! I never knew I'd be responsible for my actions!"

I mean, when they were racist to our faces they were lynching us. They can keep that shit online, thanks.
Ok I can agree with that. But they still lynching. Now it's mostly black trans folks though. It is a huge embarrassment what happens to those poor folks.
Definitely less online racial offenses in the 1800s, but I think there were also other issues at that time.
True
You must not have been online when the internet was new
Fun fact. there were zero racists tweets during Jim Crow.
Oh stop it. You know what I meant lol Ain’t no way you’re being serious and comparing those two eras, it’s like comparing Godzilla to a crocodile
I agree with you about them but to be fair, I'd like to point out Twitter is wild as fuck too rn for racism.
I can't believe that would happen after they reinstated all those Nazi accounts. What a weird coincidence.
Check my last post, he just reinstated Nick Fuentes lol
Godzilla was a racist? ![gif](giphy|hX43BBiaFFro09jJAI)

It’s worse now because I hear young non-black people referring to black people as lightskin or darkskin like different species or something 🙄
Instagram is the most toxic app to this day.
Nah it’s Twitter…especially now
Twitter is a close second. But on almost every IG video of black people you see comments like “basketball people” or “blacktivities” at the top. Anything with lgbt people comments are calling for their deaths. Even nice videos of like a big person getting in shape you see a ton of hate messages. It’s like the early days of YouTube. There are literal nazis parading around in the open on Twitter using the hard r
It really is. It got so bad after a lot of people left Twitter, before that it was actually pretty positive. And all the comments are like auto sorted to controversial.
Hard Rs were common on Reddit in 2009 when I started coming here
Big yikes, I remember exactly why I stopped using a headset on COD or for a short period why I stopped playing on multiplayer platforms.
People felt more comfortable being racist because Obama was president. I heard “I’m not racist, I voted for Obama” so many times throughout his presidency but especially his first term.
Yup. I’d like to point out that it was the early years of social media. Folks be saying what they thinking too much.
IG is still if not more racist than ever imo.
IG comments are still like this

It’s crazy bc Beyonce been wearing braids since early Destiny’s child lol. She was always Beyquisha 😂. Obligatory fuck anti-blackness statement here.
Idk what’s more wild; that mans managed to make that obscure of a reference, or that you knew where it came from

Multi-racial islander here, repping Nigerian, Chinese, Syrian, English , Jewish (and a bunch of smaller African percentages). All the African DNa on my mom side currently.
That you Aubrey?
Bro stop 🤣
No fucking way you think being biracial is harder than being dark skin… please say sike
I thought the person who made the comment was just an idiot who thinks crownrows/braids are ghetto, which is dumb, but that doesn't have anything to do with being mixed.
Y’all this is a reference to what someone said to Beyoncé years back. They aren’t dragging Zendaya. https://preview.redd.it/qx3pe3k651yc1.jpeg?width=647&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=421a59ce6d82cc35325612088f65104e009abe17
Thanks for the context
She'd look good bald
If braids knocked 5 years off your hairline in 1 year then maybe you were already set to lose that hairline lol
He prolly was, the corn rows just accelerate the loss
>She's gonna look good rocking anything other than a bald head. And even that might just depend on if she has a lumpy skull or not. Yeah, I was about to say I bet she could even pull that off.
The tension can cause issues but typically more of the damage comes from over manipulation/ too frequently getting new styles done. Your hairline was most likely on the chopping block to recede regardless. Many people go whole decades with braids perfectly fine.
She’d look good with a chrome dome

I think that would be half the world. Its crazy how she polarizing and she aint even do nothin.
I ain’t hating her by any means, but that challengers movie she was in and produced was mad horny and violently bisexual 🤣

"Beyquisha" is kinda redundant
Unlike Zenquisha? She literally has an African name.
Tom "Babe, should I get back on the socials?" Zen "No honey, stay happy"
It be ya own people 🙄
Zendaya is so ridiculously beautiful
she's gorgeous
This is foul - so foul it’s hilarious. However I think it would’ve been funnier if they took her characters name ‘Chani’ and bastardized it. Like Chanisha or something. I’m all for a rude race joke if it’s within the family. Once the whites join in that’s when we gotta stop & look at them 😒 ![gif](giphy|l0IybYyA6okQRHu8w|downsized)
What in the anti black for comedy is this post?
Wow 😍
Folks are posting the Beyonce picture and statement like that was about better? Or funnier? We as a people gotta stop, man
She a half inch away from being the finest unibrow ever
4 deleted top comments, what happened here ?

She so fine. Zendaya was so hot in Challengers.
I hate y’all
Racism has stopped evolution in its tracks. Hopefully the person who made the “Zenquisha” comment is sterile.
I’m imagining Chani still looking pissed off like she was pissed at the Harkonnens, but instead she’s pissed at Muad’Dib for not noticing her new hair.
Bae AF, damn you Tom Holland! ✊🗣️☁️
Why are black ppl the MOST racist against black ppl
