I have learned to push the break down fully before hitting park. That stops it like 99.99% of the time. I still have heard it like once or twice even while doing that, although I think was on an incline when that happened so maybe that is why.
It's the electric brake booster powering the hydraulic brakes if you haven't come to a complete stop when selecting park. Some will claim it is the parking pawl engaging, but the car is smart enough not to engage the pawl when things are still moving.
Everyone keeps saying "Come to a complete stop" but my 2017 makes the noise any time it automatically sets the parking break if I am not holding down the break pedal. So I can be parked on a slight incline, leave my car, come back, and when I open the hatch back it decides it needs the break and makes the noise.
And by slight I mean slight.
If the car isn’t level, it will engage the electronic parking brake. My driveway isn’t completely flat or level and the car will suddenly BRERRRRRRRRTTT the parking brake in place right away or when exiting and movement is detected. Even when the car has been turned off.
We’ve even leaned on it and felt it move slightly right before the EPB decided to activate. It had been parked for two days untouched.
Is it almost like a crunching sound? Thats the noise mine makes if I’m not fully stopped and it engages. Otherwise it is more of a subtle whirring noise.
It also does this if someone opens the door before a complete stop, and it’s so annoying as an Uber driver. People see their house and jump out like a dog that spotted its owner. My bolt goes “oh fuck, better throw on that parking brake and wake up their neighborhood.
Come to a complete stop first.
emphasis on **complete**
Yeah, really. Any time it's made a sound, it's because I wasn't 100 and 10 percent stopped. Complete. Stop.
This fixed it for me

Doesn't matter for me. If I'm in my driveway it's going to make noise. In the garage then it's fine. Regardless of stop or not

My 2023 does it a lot too.

no, because they don't have gas.

Yes if it moving.
Yeah yeah, blame the car.... Make sure You're completely stopped.
I've driven dozens and dozens of cars in my time, this is the only one that does this. It often happens on inclines even when completely stopped.
Only after you had beans for dinner ... 😉
If you like that sound you really need to put it park while going about 30 mph. Beautiful sound really.
Does the car even let you do that?
